In this deeply moving episode, Theo Boyd shares her personal journey through multiple layers of grief, beginning with the tragic loss of her mother in a farm accident, followed by the death of her counselor, the betrayal of her husband and ultimately, the loss of her father to suicide. These experiences shaped her bestselling book "My Grief Is Not Like Yours."Theo emphasizes that everyone's grief is unique. Comparing grief can invalidate deeply personal experiences, which is why her book is focused on calling our unique journey's to attention. She also shares the importance of finding therapeutic outlets such as writing, yoga, walking, cooking, and creating a “100 Things” list to honor loved ones or release difficult emotions.Theo shares her journey with writing and how this was a major healing tool for her. And encourages others to journal or write books - even if just for themselves - as a way to process trauma and feel heard.A recurring message you'll hear throughout our discussion is to “give yourself grace in grief.” Whether it's canceling plans, feeling sad without reason, or not being productive - it's all okay. I know the prep and the lead up to the holiday season and the last two weeks of the year can feel like a marathon. And it's interesting - because I actually asked my therapist about this concept earlier this month. What does all the chaos come from and why do we put this "pressure" on ourselves? I think it's expectations. And inevitably - the incredible love we carry for our families and our children and the desire to make memories while we can. All of these things are beautiful. But they also call for intentionality and some recalibrating to ensure we're pouring back into ourselves and filling our cups too. Lean into these 5 things and use them as a way to reflect through how you can recharge and refocus during the last week of the year. Remember - nurturing our needs is an imperative. Hold on tight to that as we round out 2024. Watch Full Episode on YOUTUBE HERE: https://youtu.be/uzQAkwuvT-U Thank you so much for tuning in and for joining the conversation! Her talks on seeing the big picture, reflecting on your food past, aligning eating habits with personal values, and acknowledging small wins, have helped parents navigate the overwhelming sea of nutritional advice and given them actionable steps to achieve their family's mealtime goals. As a mom of three Kiyah understands the challenges mothers face – especially when it comes to mealtime. And I loved her practical advice and proven strategies that help moms regain confidence and self-trust in order to change the overarching relationship with food and cultivate happier, healthier mealtimes. So much of what's been shared inside the women's health space has been focused on how to make ourselves smaller. How to shrink. How to lose weight. How to meet aesthetic goals and take up less space. I've been inside the wellness space for most of my life - from an athlete to a young mom who wanted to lose the baby weight to now midlife where I've been managing an entirely new world with hormone fluctuations. I talk to women all the time that want to lose weight or meet a goal weight. And while I understand this completely because I've lived in the same headspace for years - I'm wondering if we're still thinking about health in the wrong context? Are we still overly focused on diet culture messaging and the idea that meeting a goal weight is the true definition of health? Let's work together to ask the tough questions and change the narrative. On today's episode, we are diving into a few of the key things I work through with my clients when it comes to our nutritional habits. This can be one of the hardest components to wellness. I know for me personally, after trying every single method out there - I finally came to terms with the realization that simple methods and micro steps/goals was the name of the game to feeling equipped with nutrition. From thinking about foods in foods groups, to consistently eating and prepping ahead for success - the key to making progress towards your nutritional goals is to come up with a personalized plan that allows you to take micro steps along the way. I've loved having the opportunity to help my clients implement things like this because it eliminated the "all or nothing" mindset and helps us set ourselves up for success. On Part 2 - Jenny Swisher and I dive in more to our personal stories related to our evolving health and our evolving businesses. I personally share my perspective, the debilitating mental health burn out I started to experience in the last model I worked in and how hard I've had to work to unlearn, rebuild and align in a place that I know I can thrive. As we've said repeatedly - women deserve better. And being vulnerable in the service of other women not only includes speaking about our health, it includes speaking about our health in business. We deserve the best when it comes to our health care and being led into knowledge, education, tools, resources and programs/products that will truly meet our inside out wellness needs for the long haul. Today's conversation is one of those hard ones. Jenny Swisher and I go deeper into her story and talk very candidly about our experience inside the health space, some of the hard lessons we've learned being inside direct sales and how it felt to grow and evolve and move into misalignment. We've had to get super honest about how we feel and ask ourselves the hard questions about serving women well and leading women well. While it hasn't been an easy road to unpack, it's been incredibly worth it. Why? Because women deserve better. We deserve the best when it comes to our health care and being led into knowledge, education, tools, resources and programs/products that will truly meet our inside out wellness needs for the long haul. It's pretty hard, isn't it? Trying to figure out a way to take care of your personal wellness alongside the health of your children. Especially when there are added dynamics like neurodiversity and differences in personalities, needs, interests and more. Over the years, Dave and I have had to learn some fairly hard lessons when it comes to what we truly need in order to show up for our family. From setting boundaries, asking for help, to pouring into our own health and the COMMUNICATING with our entire family about the importance of health and wellness... We are working at it, a little bit more every day. In the end, as the saying goes - we cannot pour from an empty cup or show up well from a place of depletion - so learning some of these key practices can make a world of difference when trying to manage our personal health and our children/family health too. I'd love to know - what have you been working through at your house in order to best take care of yourself and the needs of your entire family? Mental Health is Health. And when it comes to important seasons like midlife and perimenopause, we have to keep normalizing the discussion around mental health and how our bodies change right alongside our brains. For me personally, my mental health was the first piece to the puzzle that felt impossible to manage after 40. While I have experience all kinds of changes and symptoms, mental well-being was the most significant. I know this is the reality for so many women, which is why I'm sharing my story. My hope and prayer is that this message helps you feel encouraged, empowered, seen, heard, and validated in some way. Please remember, the changes you've experienced on your health journey are real. Just for fun, I went over to google and asked "what are the 3 most common questions currently inside women's health?" I thought all 3 were on point and quite honestly, questions I've come across often in my own health journey and as I talk to more women who are working on their wellness. Topics like how to manage symptoms, how to balance hormones naturally and how to effectively work through the mental and emotional weight are KEY topics we need to continue to speak up about for all women. Tune into today's conversation - and I'd love to hear your thoughts. Health is highly individual. I've said this before as a women's health coach and I think it's important to share it again - when it comes to deeply personalized topics like our female physiology, hormone health and gut health, we are doing women a massive disservice if we don't speak up enough about how bio-individual these topics are. Meaning - diving into these things for our wellness is UNIQUE to each of us! Sustainable health isn't a cookie cutter concept. And it's not a cookie cutter topic. Women deserve better and as someone who is incredibly passionate about serving women well, we are talking about the importance of understanding bio-individuality today. What is it? And why does it matter? Overall, it matters because our physiology changes every single day as women and the more we know, the more we connect to knowledgeable practitioners, the more we work strategically with health coaches like me, the more we learn about the science studied on women, the more we understand how to uniquely serve our body, brain, lifestyle and more - the more we can lean into the best and most powerful practices for our personalized longevity wellness. I've been a Mom for almost 13 years. And next week - all 4 of our kids will be in full-time school for the first time. While I know this season is going to be an amazing experience and transition for all of us - it doesn't always feel that way. The truth is - the emotions inside CHANGE are big. They can feel so overwhelming and challenging, which is why it's incredibly important to normalize and share and reflect - together. If you're a mom inside an impending BIG transition - please know you're not alone. As I share on today's episode from my most recent therapy session - "the one thing we can count on in life is change." This week - I had a friend ask me about managing stress and key tools to help with things like low mood and depression. I loved this question for a few reasons. One - because there are so many things we can do/control and at the same time, this is a loaded question because it's truly an incredibly unique process for each and every one of us. Through sharing more about my personal health story and the story of our family, I've been able to connect with more and more women and families, navigating their own inside out health journeys. To learn more about our family's health story and my son's diagonsis - you can listen to the episode below: Episode 123: Mental Health & HOPE, No Matter How Complex: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/empowered-in-health/id1598678571?i=1000655836755 In the end - leaning into things like dedicated support, consistent therapy, evaluating lifestyle habits, targeted supplementation and working with knowledeagable practitioners to help with understanding your unique body/brain are some of the key tools I talk through leaning into on today's episode. Have you ever heard a quote or someone share something in a presentation, podcast or conversation that felt SO incredibly profound? Like the message was meant for you, at that exact moment and was inevitably something you were meant to hear? That happened to me last week at my business mentorship event, surrounded by dozens of amazing mission-driven entrepreneurs and led by the incredible AJ and Rory Vaden of Brand Builders Group. I learned so much about myself by stepping out of my comfort zone and doing hard things. Beyond that, I learned even more from the other business owners in the room, doing amazing things in the world, all at different stages of life and business. At one point in our meetings - AJ shared one of the most profound messages I've heard up to this point along my entrepreneurial journey...."When it comes to building a brand and sharing your mission with the world - it's NOT about being front and center. It's about being front and serving." A mantra I will hold on to for forever as I continue along the journey of how to best serve women and families on their path to wellness. Have you ever had to take a huge step out of your comfort zone and felt completely unsure of yourself? Like you had no idea what you were doing but you knew that the best next step was in the direction that you were headed? That's what I'm sharing about this week. At the beginning of this year, I invested in a business mentorship to help me start to formulate my ideas, vision and mission to serve in the health and wellness space. It has been an incredibly uncomfortable journey of growth and learning for the past 6 months, but one that I wouldn't trade for the world. That's one of the most powerful things we can remember about stepping out of our comfort zone. While YES! It can feel scary, uncertain and incredibly overwhelming - the growth that comes from it is something that translates into every other aspect of our lives. What a gift! On today's episode of Empowered in Health, I interview Dana Grinnell. I have been so excited to partner with her more and share her knowledge with all of you. Dana is a 40-something mother of 3 who lives & loves recreating in the mountains. She worked in healthcare for 17 years where she witnessed the rampant chronic illness in our country and became very passionate about uncovering the root causes and avoiding them to keep myself and my family safe. Turns out toxins are everywhere!!!! And can wreak havoc on our health if we aren't careful. Speaking of careful, Dana was incredibly diligent for over a decade and a half when she had an unfortunate (or fortunate depending on how you look at it) laundry detergent incident that prompted her to start her business, Free Living Co. She was returning from a routine trip to Costco when her laundry detergent leaked in the back of the car and turned a radioactive purple color. It dawned on her that it was a chemical reaction that caused that and sure enough the detergent was highly toxic. Here's the link where you can read more about the story on The Cooldown: https://www.thecooldown.com/green-home/spilled-laundry-detergent-car-trunk-color-change/ Dana shares that it's almost impossible to keep up with all the ingredients that cause harm, reading the labels is time intensive, and you simply can't trust natural or "healthy" stores or brand's marketing claims. Because of this - she decided to build a business to solve this problem and make homes healthier without the hassle. Tune in to today's episode to hear more of Dana's incredible perspective, key tips and simple, manageable steps you can take to start cleaning up the products in your home, for your health.
