This episode of the Anchors Aweigh podcast is dedicated entirely to the memory of Pete Medhurst, the longtime Voice of Navy Athletics who died last week after a three-month bout with brain cancer. Navy Athletics administrators, varsity coaches and colleagues pay tribute to the life and legacy of Medhurst.
We put the spotlight on Navy gymnastics, which opens the season this weekend at the West Point Open, an important meet featuring many top programs. The Navy Classic will be held at Halsey Field House the following weekend. We interview Navy gymnastics coach Kip Simons to preview the season. We also talk Navy basketball with play-by-play announcer Matt Sabados, who has been filling in for Pete Medhurst on Navy Athletics broadcast. Lastly, we present a great discussion between Navy quarterback Blake Horvath and former Navy football legend John Sai. Horvath's 95-yard touchdown run in the Armed Forces Bowl broke Sai's long-standing record, which was set way back in 1963.

Navy men's lacrosse took a major step forward this week by beating Loyola Maryland, 12-10, in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament. It marked the first time since 2010 the Midshipmen won a game in the postseason tourney. During the interview segment, we put the spotlight on Navy women's golf, which is headed to the Bermuda Run Regional of the NCAA Tournament. We talk to head coach Kylee Sullivan and top play Stephanie Lee. Navy Athletics insiders Bill Wagner and Pete Medhurst also discuss the Navy football banquet and the Star Series for baseball.
It was a monumental weekend for Navy Athletics, which had two programs capture Patriot League Championships and another advance to a national championship game. Navy women's tennis and women's golf both secured Patriot League Tournament titles to earn automatic berths in the NCAA Tournament. Navy men's rugby advanced to the Division I-A national championship for the second straight season. Lastly, Navy men's tennis won the Star match with archrival Army. During the interview segment we talk to Navy baseball coach Chuck Ristano, whose club will play the Star Series this weekend at West Point.
Two stars were on the line last Saturday as Army and Navy met on lacrosse fields located more than 200 miles apart. The big day got off to a disappointing start as Navy men's lacrosse lost a tough battle with Army at Michie Stadium in West Point. However, Navy women's lacrosse followed with an impressive 17-11 victory over Army. That win enabled Navy Athletics to clinch the annual Star Series, presented by USAA. Navy is now an incredible 40-4-2 in the 46 years the Star Series has been contested. The interview segment features former Navy basketball coach Don DeVoe, who is being inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend.
