In fall 1938, the Sudetenland, a region of Czechoslovakia, was incorporated into the Nazi Reich, and the following March, German troops marched into Prague. Shortly thereafter, Pete's family left for Italy, where they settled in the Genoa suburbs. There, they were attacked by local antisemitic fascists. Soon after Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, the Philippses immigrated to Ecuador.1940–45: In Quito, the Philippses joined the growing colony of refugees from Germany. Pete attended a private boys' school. His father set up business making margarine, while his mother did clothing alterations and knitting. In May 1941, just six months before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Philippses arrived in the United States. Pete's father returned to his former company.After the war, Pete learned that his paternal grandmother, who had fled earlier to the Netherlands, had been deported to Auschwitz, where she perished. The Aryan Jesus: Christian Theologians and the Bible in Nazi Germany (Princeton UP, 2010) documents the process, and relative ease, with which institutions of higher learning and the religious establishment, can be corrupted by political ideology and power. In Germany of the 1930's the thin cloak of religion covered and sanitized the murderous evil of Naziism. Was Jesus a Nazi? During the Third Reich, German Protestant theologians, motivated by racism and tapping into traditional Christian anti-Semitism, redefined Jesus as an Aryan and Christianity as a religion at war with Judaism. In 1939, these theologians established the Institute for the Study and Eradication of Jewish Influence on German Religious Life. In The Aryan Jesus, Susannah Heschel shows that during the Third Reich, the Institute became the most important propaganda organ of German Protestantism, exerting a widespread influence and producing a nazified Christianity that placed anti-Semitism at its theological center. Based on years of archival research, The Aryan Jesus examines the membership and activities of this controversial theological organization. With headquarters in Eisenach, the Institute sponsored propaganda conferences throughout the Nazi Reich and published books defaming Judaism, including a dejudaized version of the New Testament and a catechism proclaiming Jesus as the savior of the Aryans. Institute members--professors of theology, bishops, and pastors--viewed their efforts as a vital support for Hitler's war against the Jews. Heschel looks in particular at Walter Grundmann, the Institute's director and a professor of the New Testament at the University of Jena. Grundmann and his colleagues formed a community of like-minded Nazi Christians who remained active and continued to support each other in Germany's postwar years. In Bali yesterday, President Biden met with the first Communist Chinese emperor, Xi Jinping. It may prove to be as ominously momentous a meeting as British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's with Nazi Germany's Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler, in September 1938. We're told the U.S. president insisted that the U.S.-Chinese relationship is one of “competition” and that he's determined to avoid conflict. For his part, Xi reportedly baldly lied that China has “no intention to challenge or displace the United States.” The truth is the Chinese Communist Party is at war with America. Under Xi, it is determined not only to displace, but destroy this country. If the U.S. government persists in believing otherwise, we will not have “peace in our time,” but be decisively defeated by a Chinese empire that makes the threat posed by the Nazi Reich pale into insignificance. Z is for… well that's what everybody's trying to figure out. The Latin letter has been placed on the sides of tanks, communication trucks, and the rocket launchers of Russian forces in Ukraine. It was also worn by the Russian gymnast Ivan Kuliak who is facing disciplinary proceedings by the International Gymnastics Federation for displaying the letter on a podium next to his Ukrainian rival. The symbol is likely not to be a ‘letter' in the traditional sense, due to Zed in the Russian Cyrillic alphabet being written more like a 3. Instead, it is a symbol meant to convey an idea more so than an alphabetic sound or expression. The letter may be used to help identify friendly forces, make sure that troops are in the right positions, or indicate different task forces. These seem most logical but there are other takes that go off the ledge. Aric Toler, a researcher at Bellingcat, an open-source investigation operation monitoring Russian military operations, said since we don't know what the letter means, “assume the worse, I guess/fear.” According to CNN and mysterious analysts, it is the “unfurling of a chilling new nationalist movement.” These are some pretty big assumptions for admittedly not knowing. Aglaya Snetkov from University College London says essentially the opposite - the symbol should not be seen as fascist because, “There are lots of memes transforming the ‘Z' into a swastika, but that's done by people who want to push back against the regime.” The irony in this is that Vladimir Putin has explicitly said he was attempting to get rid of leftover Nazi networks in Ukraine. And this really is the important thing about symbols, they always have more than one meaning and can be interpreted endlessly by any number of people. Some initially thought that the letters were actually a number two, symbolizing February 22, 2022, the day Russia ratified an agreement on “friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance“ with breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine - Donetsk (do net sik) and Luhansk (la hunsk). Putin has asked for these two areas that have been under constant assault by Ukrainian forces to be recognized as independent. War has waged in this region for seven years since the installation of the Zelenskyy government after an overthrow of the previous regime. 14,000 people have died since then, many of them civilians. Putin has also requested Crimea be recognized as Russian, and Ukraine takes a neutrality stance and demilitarizes on the doorstep of Russia. Others say the letters relate to military slogans, as the V, along with Z, also appear on the official Instagram account of the Russian department of defense. Slogans like Za PatsanoV and Sila V Pravde, mean ‘for the lads' and ‘strength in truth'. It seems like every action or thought today if in opposition to the status quo, is seen as nationalistic and the result of some fascist ideology. The same is true with every dot or line, no matter how it curves, or breaks at a 90° angle, it also is identified as part of some fascist ideology. We even had some people compare the American Eagle to fascism, not even realizing the eagle was chosen as a symbol of resurrection from the ashes, a sign of rebirth and nobility, coming from that of the Phoenix. The same people who saw the eagle as a Nazi symbol, apparently don't recognize that both the Iranians and the Russians, for example, also use the eagle. Interestingly, if you pick up a book on runes, something Heinrich Himmler, not so much Adolf Hitler, was obsessed with you will find two symbols that are similar to a Z. Eihwaz relates to the world tree and as a symbol of protection. It looks more like an S with 90° hooks. It also indicates that you have placed your intentions on a reasonable target and if they are goals easily achievable. Any obstacle in your way can be cautiously dealt with and may even be beneficial to the final outcome. The symbol represents the overcoming of conflict and the arrival of a better state of existence. On the other hand, the Sigel, which looks more like a lightning bolt, or a Z, is a symbol of victory and great power. Any opposition to this energy can be quickly overcome. This is the classical symbol of the SS in the Nazi Reich. Much like the swastika, which can be made from the merging of these two runes, these Sigils represent protection, strength, and victory. The original swastika is only a bent armed cross, representing the sun wheel and the turning of the wheel of the year. It is a symbol of protection, health, strength, the sun, and even love. When we start to get this information, see these patterns, and attempt an understanding of what they mean, even on the subconscious level, we have to look in other places to see if we are missing important details. Take the colors of Ukraine and the Ukrainian flag. Overnight, social media profiles were plastered with these symbols. They are in every news feed, UNICEF has ads asking for donations, and it's all anybody seems to want to talk about. If you watched the state of the union, for the United States of America, you saw one US flag and the rest were Ukrainian. The blue shield with goldcrest is the Ukrainian coat of arms. In the center is a trident, a traditional symbol of power over water, particularly the seas, and a symbol meant to ward off evil and bring protection. In Ukrainian history, it relates to the first grand Prince of Kyiv. In other words, the symbols on those Russian tanks have the same purpose as the symbol on the Ukrainian coat of arms. Strength, power, defense, victory, protection, etc. The trident is connected to Zeus-Jupiter through his brother Neptune-Posiden. Zeus sends out lighting bolts and his brother is Pluto. Recently we heard about the Pluto Returns and the fall of empires. Pluto returned on February 22, 2022, the day Russia ratified an agreement on recognizing Donetsk and Luhansk. A week later, Putin was compared to Julius Caesar by Senator Lindsey Graham, the comparison made in Russia in 2015 by supporters of Putin, comparing him to the Roman emperor. The timing of all of this is more than peculiar because March is the month of Ides, the 15th when Julius Caesar was actually assassinated. The Russian Z is also written like a number three, the triune value of the trident. Some also say that it has a relationship to ancient Khazaria. Z is also the 26 letter of the English alphabet, the Omega, therefore connecting the symbol to God and the Greek Zeus or Roman Jupiter again. In the Hebrew alphabet Z relates to Zayin, the sword or armor with a numerical value of seven. Both the Z, or Sigel, and the trident, represent swords. The Z and Sigel also represent the serpent. The sword and serpent are the forces of nature interacting on the Tree of Life. The sword brings down divine energy to manifest the Universe, bringing spirit into form. The serpent is the counterbalancing of this force, a path of evolution back with Source. In other words, it is an alchemical transformation. The trident, furthermore, directs the currents of the ocean, which is influenced by the moon. The moon and waters represent turbulence and calm, both states of the human emotional state. In other words, those who wield the trident have power over the emotional state of man, and the currents are the currency or energy of man. Overnight Americans began waving the flag of a foreign nation claiming that their independence was being threatened and to preserve it Ukraine needed to join with NATO, and even the European Union. How that preserves sovereignty, nobody knows. The same people are oblivious about the overthrow of the Ukrainian government in 2014, the ongoing fighting in newly recognized Russian territories that has killed thousands over the years, the violence against Russians in Ukraine, or about the countless falsified stories being pumped out by Western media. The problem here with these symbols and this subconscious language Is how quickly the public can be pivoted from one disaster to another, from one role-play game to the next. This is worrisome because our energy is being siphoned off and dumped into these symbols that act like energetic reservoirs that can be poured out as libations. We talk about oil prices, energy, etc., and that is exactly what we are paying for at the pump and paying for in our energetic attention. Zeus and the colors blue and yellow were also prevalent at the 2022 Super Bowl. We are not entirely sure what the Z means, but it might stand for Zeus or YEAR ZERO, or even the 0 of a Great Reset.

John Connelly is a Professor of History at the University of California Berkley who works in the fields of modern Eastern European social and political history, the history of education, nationalism studies, and the history of Catholicism.
