How did we get from Saturday night to Thursday night?The arc of this past week, the dizzying emotional trajectory, is hard to explain, a genuine mystery. Saturday night, December 13, was Bondi Beach and Brown. The Hanukkah celebration by the Sea that became the Hanukkah massacre by the Sea. The school shooting at Brown, an hour from here, where we have students, parents of students, and long-time faculty at Brown who are members of Temple Emanuel.Just five nights later, Thursday night, December 18, was our Hanukkah celebration. Now we do a Hanukkah celebration every year, but it was never better than this year. It was never more robustly attended, and never more robust in joy, in spirit. Hundreds of us were celebrating Hanukkah, parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren, singing, clapping, smiling, shmoozing, catching up with each other happily, eating latkas and sufganiyot, our youngest learners making sugar cookies shmeared with way too much blue frosting, but eating it all with a messy smile. The choirs sang, the musicians played, the parents shepped nachus. We also skewed young, very young that night: preschool children, elementary school children, teens and their parents and grandparents. We sometimes hear the question: where are the young people? The answer is: The young people were at our Hanukkah celebration in droves. It was the world as it should be, utter loveliness.And we were not alone.The Jews of Greater Boston celebrated Hanukkah this week with intensity and joy. We knew exactly what happened when there was a public celebration at Bondi Beach. Did that cause us to cower? Did that cause us to cancel our public Hanukkah celebrations? Just the opposite. We had a profusion of joyful, public Hanukkah celebrations in the week of Bondi Beach and Brown, inspired by a resolve not to succumb to terrorism and darkness.We had joyful, public candle lightings in Newton, Chestnut Hill, Brookline, Needham, Cambridge, Somerville, Watertown, Everett, Quincy, the Boston Common. The MFA. How do we understand this arc from the darkness of Saturday night to the light of Thursday night? The darkness of Saturday night was real and deserved. The stories that came out—the 87-year-old Holocaust survivor, Alex Kleytman, who survived Hitler, Naziism, and lethal European Jew hatred, only to die on a beach in Australia in 2025, every story its own infinite tragedy—all these stories are completely heart-breaking. If this infinite tragedy had curtailed our Hanukkah joy, that would have been understandable, but the opposite happened—a joy that flowed from a resolute place. Our members who thoroughly enjoyed our Hanukkah celebration were not faking it. We were not acting. We were not Meryl Streep. We were genuinely happy in the same week as this deep tragedy that befell our people. What is that?

The holiday season is in full swing. The Grinders are ready to stuff their faces for Thanksgiving. The sales and the shopping are just beginning. Once the food is done, the last thing most people want to do is talk to their family members. So instead of gouging out ears, why not try to relax with a good movie or tv show. The Grinders have some recommendations and some warnings. Are Kpop Demon Hunter or Spin the Bottle going to leave Frank with more indigestion than eating an entire pecan pie? Are Predator Killer of Killers and the Super Mario Bros Movie so bad that they would make Eric prefer to watch football? Are Gen V and Alien Earth filled with enough nudity and gore to make Break enjoy them even more than the sweet potatoes?  If the dinner table political fight with the drunk uncle wasn't enough to get one's blood boiling, then maybe these Stinkos will get the heart rate up. Our overly stuffed president continues his war on the American people. Between his appointees, our failure of a Congress, and corrupted judges across the country there is a lot of anger. They embrace NAZIism while rejecting science. Despite their hateful claims, people do not become autistic because of vaccines. Also, they need to stop trying to "fix" autistic people. They are not broken! We can all agree that the stuffing is the best part of the meal. At least, no one can disagree because I have no editor. Just like the stuffing the Sweetos are here to counteract the bitter taste of Stinkos. In the surprise of all surprises the American government is finally releasing the Epstein files. From here, we can only hope it leads to punishment for everyone involved in the abuse and coverup. More than anything, we all should want justice for the victims. With only one segment left, it's time to loosen those pants for dessert. Almost as good as pumpkin pie but not even close to apple pie is the delicious Driver's Seat. Although the Grinders don't talk much about sports the final segment is dedicated to their favorite and most influential athletes. Football players, Olympians, baseball players, and competitors from numerous other sports get the respect they deserve. With so many delicious food options, don't be the guest who brings green bean casserole or fruitcakes. That is a good way to not get invited back. But it's not all bad, anyone kicked out of family events has more free time to listen to RPGrinders!                 I know I usually use this space for my sarcasm, but now I'm just thinking about Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey light meat. Turkey dark meat, stuffing, rolls, cranberries, mash potatoes, corn, sweet potatoes, and a variety of pies... And now I have to try not to drool for a week, no promises and no apologies for drooling in my sleep.

Darrell Castle talks about the state of our society and the politics that drive and govern it. Transcription / Notes ASLEEP AT ARLINGTON Hello, this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report. This is Friday the 31st Day of May in the year of our Lord 2024.I will be talking about the state of our society and the politics that drive and govern it. I argue that politics and demonic Hollywood are moving ever closer to one and the same. Politicians are worried right now because they can't seem to figure out why more of the American people are becoming wise to their game of weaponization of the law and have stopped believing their propaganda. Please bear in mind that this Report was prepared before the verdict in the Stalinist Show Trial came in so I will have to discuss that at a later date. The reason I chose the title, “Asleep at Arlington” was in reference to the president visibly falling asleep on the podium while the secretary of defense was speaking at the annual memorial ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day. There are many things the president could have told the nation during that moment but he chose to make it about himself as usual. Donald Trump is often accused of making every speech about himself and I guess that criticism is valid, but when Trump talks about himself he normally tells stories that he believes to be true unlike the president. I've never heard Mr. Trump tell how his son was killed in Iraq when he wasn't, but that is the same story President Biden tells each time he speaks to veterans, their families, or to the nation in general about the military as he did at Arlington. What could he have said instead, but I understand that he gets a pass to some degree, because he obviously has dementia and can't remember which story he told the last time. I thought the president had a staff of speech writers but I guess he has trouble staying on script. He could have said for example, that next week, the 6th of June is the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings on the coast of France. He could have said that hundreds of thousands of young men were sent to the beaches to liberate Europe and save civilization from Naziism and that tens of thousands died that day. It was a good opportunity to remember them for as General Eisenhower said, we may never see their like again. He was speaking at Arlington National Cemetery so he could have used the memorial ceremony to mention that he, as Commander in Chief, is aware that the suicide rate among active-duty military personnel is 2.5 times the national average. Why is that, would be a good question and what we can do about it would be the answer. Does that figure say anything about foreign policy and how it is being conducted now? He and his friends in the media and especially in Hollywood, have other things to worry about than military personnel taking their own lives. He must think about reelection at a time when it's hard to think about anything. A nagging, persistent question that he must be struggling with is why have my personally orchestrated lawfare attacks against Donald Trump not turned the American people against him. Maybe they are not as stupid and naive as I assumed they were. The concern about the chances that Biden could lose the election is growing ever closer to panic as is reflected in the growing number of media stories advising the president on how to conduct his campaign. Is advising the president a media responsibility, no but its just something the are expected to do for Democrats. He is advised from time to time to show some empathy on the economy. The media can at least sense that people are sick and tired of hearing how great Bidenomics is when they must pay 10% more for food this year than last year. Very few people can enjoy a 10% raise in pay each year so the real effect is that they are losing their standard of living more and more each year.  If the president could just show some concern,

The Aryan Jesus: Christian Theologians and the Bible in Nazi Germany (Princeton UP, 2010) documents the process, and relative ease, with which institutions of higher learning and the religious establishment, can be corrupted by political ideology and power. In Germany of the 1930's the thin cloak of religion covered and sanitized the murderous evil of Naziism. Was Jesus a Nazi? During the Third Reich, German Protestant theologians, motivated by racism and tapping into traditional Christian anti-Semitism, redefined Jesus as an Aryan and Christianity as a religion at war with Judaism. In 1939, these theologians established the Institute for the Study and Eradication of Jewish Influence on German Religious Life. In The Aryan Jesus, Susannah Heschel shows that during the Third Reich, the Institute became the most important propaganda organ of German Protestantism, exerting a widespread influence and producing a nazified Christianity that placed anti-Semitism at its theological center. Based on years of archival research, The Aryan Jesus examines the membership and activities of this controversial theological organization. With headquarters in Eisenach, the Institute sponsored propaganda conferences throughout the Nazi Reich and published books defaming Judaism, including a dejudaized version of the New Testament and a catechism proclaiming Jesus as the savior of the Aryans. Institute members--professors of theology, bishops, and pastors--viewed their efforts as a vital support for Hitler's war against the Jews. Heschel looks in particular at Walter Grundmann, the Institute's director and a professor of the New Testament at the University of Jena. Grundmann and his colleagues formed a community of like-minded Nazi Christians who remained active and continued to support each other in Germany's postwar years. The Aryan Jesus raises vital questions about Christianity's recent past and the ambivalent place of Judaism in Christian thought. President Biden is not only stupid by birth, but he is dangerous as well. He is the reason for increased gas, propane, crude oil prices, and an economy in crisis. Now Biden is draining America's strategic reserve by releasing a million barrels a day for the next several months to try and fix the mess he made. Yet the real answer here is to drill and produce more energy to create a surplus. There was more evidence to corroborate this story than there was for any of the accusations against Trump. While AG Merrick Garland brags about his work prosecuting people for parading or trespassing near the Capitol on January 6th, he's said nothing about the Hunter Biden laptop investigation which is ongoing. Republicans must call for recusal of Garland and demand a special counsel immediately. Later, why isn't George Soros the most wanted man in the world for helping elect pro-crime progressive prosecutors? The bad guys are his constituency and that becomes a problem for the rest of us law-abiding citizens. Now, Biden wants Trump, Fox News, and dissenting citizens silenced and treated like criminals. Meanwhile, the gender obsesses Democrats that won't even define a woman are about to put a Judge that is sympathetic to the absolute worst criminals ever - child rapists. A child rapist was free to assault again because of Judge Ketanji Brown-Jackson's weak sentencing. Afterward, Rep. Madison Cawthorn made a statement that he's since had to walk back, yet his Republican colleagues are destroying him for it instead of getting him a clearer direction.

I think the magic phrase at the time was: "Rationality for its own sake, for the sake of existential risk." I was against this move. I also had no idea how power works. I don't know how to translate this into LW language, so I'll just use mine: I was secret-to-me vastly more interested in being victimized at people/institutions/the world than I was in doing real things. But the reason I was against the move is solid. I still believe in it. I want to spell that part out a bit. Not to gripe about the past. The past makes sense to me. But because the idea still applies. I think it's a simple idea once it's not cloaked in bullshit. Maybe that's an illusion of transparency. But I'll try to keep this simple-to-me and correct toward more detail when asked and I feel like it, rather than spelling out all the details in a way that turns out to have been unneeded. Which is to say, this'll be kind of punchy and under-justified. The short version is this: We're already in AI takeoff. The "AI" is just running on human minds right now. Sorting out AI alignment in computers is focusing entirely on the endgame. That's not where the causal power is. Maybe that's enough for you. If so, cool. I'll say more to gesture at the flesh of this. What kind of thing is wokism? Or Communism? What kind of thing was Naziism in WWII? Or the flat Earth conspiracy movement? Q Anon? If you squint a bit, you might see there's a common type here. In a Facebook post I argued that it's fair to view these things as alive. Well, really, I just described them as living, which kind of is the argument. If your woo allergy keeps you from seeing that. well, good luck to you. But if you're willing to just assume I mean something non-woo, you just might see something real there. These hyperobject creatures are undergoing massive competitive evolution. Thanks Internet. They're competing for resources. Literal things like land, money, political power. and most importantly, human minds. I mean something loose here. Y'all are mostly better at details than I am. I'll let you flesh those out rather than pretending I can do it well. But I'm guessing you know this thing. We saw it in the pandemic, where friendships got torn apart because people got hooked by competing memes. Some "plandemic" conspiracy theorist anti-vax types, some blind belief in provably incoherent authorities, the whole anti-racism woke wave, etc. This is people getting possessed. And the. things. possessing them are highly optimizing for this. To borrow a bit from fiction: It's worth knowing that in their original vision for The Matrix, the Wachowski siblings wanted humans to be processors, not batteries. The Matrix was a way of harvesting human computing power. As I recall, they had to change it because someone argued that people wouldn't understand their idea. I think we're in a scenario like this. Not so much the "in a simulation" part. (I mean, maybe. But for what I'm saying here I don't care.) But yes with a functionally nonhuman intelligence hijacking our minds to do coordinated computations. (And no, I'm not positing a ghost in the machine, any more than I posit a ghost in the machine of "you" when I pretend that you are an intelligent agent. If we stop pretending that intelligence is ontologically separate from the structures it's implemented on, then the same thing that lets "superintelligent agent" mean anything at all says we already have several.) We're already witnessing orthogonality. The talk of "late-stage capitalism" points at this. The way greenwashing appears for instance is intelligently weaponized Goodhart. It's explicitly hacking people's signals in order to extract what the hypercreature in question...
