Each week BusinessDesk and the NZ Herald's Cooking the Books podcast tackles a different money problem. Today, it's why scammers are on the rise, and how to stay ahead of them. Hosted by Frances Cook. If you pride yourself on being great with money, and able to spot tricksters coming a mile off, I have bad news for you: you're one of the people most at risk. Scams, fraudsters, and rip-off artists are everywhere right now, and it's horrifying the number of people who are losing their hard-earned money to them. One of the biggest dangers to being sucked in, though, is thinking that you know all the tricks. People with some money knowledge are actually more likely to get taken in. That's exactly what Nigel Latta learned when he started researching for his new TV show about scammers. And he had some first hand knowledge of the damage that scammers can do, after his mother-in-law lost thousands to them. If you have a question about this podcast, or a question you'd like answered in the next one, come and talk to me about it. Scam stories aren't new. We hear about scams constantly, but recently there has been an increase of scamming stories in the news. The cautionary twist seems to be that the people who've been  scammed are tech savvy people who are surprised they've been successfully tricked.    We know scams are increasing. Latest statistics from Cert NZ show cyber crime reports increased 12 percent in the first three months of 2023 compared to the previous three months. Financial losses from cyber crimes were up 66 percent to almost $6 million.   We're aware of it and we're constantly reminded to be careful - but it just keeps getting worse.   At the end of June the Ministry of Justice released the Crime and Victim Survey, based on data collected in the 12 months between November 2021 and November 2022.  Fraud and deception crimes increased from 288,000 in the previous year to 510,000. Around 10 percent of adults were victims of fraud and deception crimes, that's about 423,000 people.  I'm one of those who thinks they know enough not to fall victim. I'm aware of the latest text and email scams circulating - recently pretending to be the NZ Police, Waka Kotahi – New Zealand Transport Agency, NZ Post, Inland Revenue, and the banks.  Last week I received a message from Waka Kotahi asking me to click a link to update my car's registration. A quick trip to the car in the driveway confirmed this wasn't legit.   I know to never disclose my PIN, passwords or personal information to anyone over the phone - even if they claim to be the police, or my bank.   So you know, I feel confident I won't be tricked. This was until I watched the first episode of Nigel Latta's new show You've Been Scammed. In this new series, Latta explains why we are susceptible to scams, the tricks used and the different types in circulation.   He starts by saying: “9 out of 10 of us think we can spot a scam”.   We're badly mistaken. Scams are getting much more sophisticated and by the end of the first episode my confidence was shaken. That's what Latta wants - confidence and complacency are what make us vulnerable.   NZ banks and the Banking Ombudsman are working together to try and keep consumers safe. The Banking Ombudsman said in 2022 that bank data estimated New Zealanders were losing about $200 million each year to fraudsters. It is important banks keep working to prevent scams and fast-track resolution of scan related complaints. It's better for both banks and their customers.   But equally, we need to take more individual responsibility. It's time to shake off our complacency - sort out our passwords, get two-factor authentication in place, and acknowledge how much information is exposed by our social media activity.   But most of all, the message I'm getting is that if you get a message that's in any way out of the blue, unexpected or new, don't do anything - don't click, don't respond, don't continue the conversation.  For an introvert like me this feels like something I can happily do.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We've heard a lot over recent years about jobs and professions where people could be replaced by machines and other forms of technology. Accounting features prominently in this.In the 2017 television programme What Next?, psychologist Nigel Latta suggested that over 20 years the number of accountants in New Zealand would plummet from 17,669 to just 19, with humans being replaced by robots and algorithms.Rick Jones, the New Zealand Country Head for accounting industry body CPA Australia, experienced a prompt response to the Latta programme from CPA members."It feels like yesterday that that show was on," Jones told interest.co.nz in the latest episode of our Of Interest Podcast. "I remember watching it on a Sunday evening. And then I got to work on Monday morning and had a couple of phone calls, quite early from new members who had just joined CPA Australia as an accounting professional body member. They referenced that programme, and they said, 'look, I'm not sure this is the right path for me' [as] a direct result of the Nigel Latta shows. So it was really interesting that immediately there was a short-term response," said Jones.Jones fielded additional enquiries that week from people "genuinely worried about accounting as a viable profession," wondering whether they were on the right path, and whether automation would take over their role. The TV programme certainly created a stir in the accounting industry. Some hit back at Latta, including Xero Chief Product Officer Anna Curzon via this Linkedin post. But in the time since concerns about automation haven't gone away."It still gets talked about on a daily basis with employers and with the profession. There are some roles that automation and software have taken over, but what we have seen is a whole lot of new roles have been created. So the demand for accountants and accounting roles has never been greater, but the role of the accountant is evolving and technology is actually an enabler," Jones said.He speaks about this at length in the podcast, as well as about the challenges of attracting young people to the accounting profession in a dynamic, and changing world.

Glenn Compain is a former Auckland NZ frontline policeman and current QPS officer - working largely with troubled youth, and he's seen things that would haunt your nightmares. Violent gangs, rampant drug and alcohol abuse, soul-destroying promiscuity, parents unwilling or unable to tackle the mess their kids are making of their young lives.     At 19 he led a team of voluntary aid workers to Uganda, where they worked with orphans and child soldiers during the civil war. In 2004 he co-founded the Village Community Services trust with ex All Black Michael Jones, which continues to deliver mentoring to over 500 young people at risk in schools across Auckland.  A compelling and charismatic speaker, Glenn Compain is a powerful new addition to the HarperCollins social and parenting list and follows in the footsteps of Celia Lashlie and Nigel Latta.    Glenn's experience has taught him that every child is at risk at some stage during their formative years; that there are many influences in their lives that their parents can't hope to control. His message is that it is the parents' job to give their children the skills to make good decisions when times are tough. By sharing his own story and experiences from the frontline Glenn gives concerned parents the tools they need to spot the danger signs for their children themselves. While he doesn't claim to have all the answers, his common-sense approach and experience with troubled youth make his insight and ideas valuable tools to empower parents. COMMENTWell, what a week it has been. One none of us could have expected. This time last week I was talking to you about the climate change protest taking place. and the thousands of students expected on the streets protesting with placards.Isn't that a distant memory?Today, thousands again will be back on the streets and in squares and public places, but for a very different reason and in a country forever changed by the events of 7 days ago.So how much have we learned in a week?I'd like to think we now know more about Islamic culture and practices than we may have before. That we now know where the Mosques in our communities are. That we know the real pervasiveness of discrimination against Muslims. That we have a heightened awareness of how much words matter. That we can quickly and efficiently change our gun laws by way of response. And that hopefully attitudes will change too.I spoke with Nigel Latta yesterday about how we return to some semblance of normality in the wake of all this. Not without profound sadness or heartache at what's gone on, but just in the sense of picking back up our daily routines and lives.I think he misconstrued my question. He replied that we shouldn't return to normal, or our normal routines and that he hopes we never do.He said our normal routine is racism and Islamaphobia that it was rampant, and we let it happen, and that we should never go back to it.What I meant was, picking ourselves back up and moving forward. In the same sense the Prime Minister referred to when she talked about the Imam from the Mosque and said if even he can pick himself up and keep going, so must we all.I think if we've learned anything this week, it's about the power of inclusivity.I think New Zealand has woken up to the fact we can do betterAnd I have faith in our country and the people, who I believe are, in the main, kind. But then I don't wear a hijab - I can't profess to know what it's like to walk in others shoes. But what I do see, is a country united in grief, united in compassion, deeply sad about what happened in Christchurch and pouring their hearts, wallets, time and words, into restoring faith in humanity.Yes we can do better, but look at the kindness you've already seen this past week. Look at depth of feeling and outpouring of support. Our greatest test now of course, is that we can keep it going, and move forward carrying with us, the lessons of this past week.

COMMENTI find myself disagreeing with my husband – again. Surely that's part of any healthy marriage?Anyway, Mr Hosking said yesterday that it was "madness" to think we could just upend the justice system and remove the right to a fair trial following Friday's horrific events. That the accused is entitled to a trial just like everyone else, because that is how the law works.I disagree of course, I find it immensely frustrating that families will be put through more grief, agony and heartache - with potentially a long, drawn-out court trial. They've already been put through so much, not only with the events of last Friday, but with having to wait so long for the bodies of their loved ones to be returned so that evidence can be gathered. Why does anyone who rejects fairness so completely, still get to be part of a 'fair' system? The accused is apparently being kept in an isolated part of the maximum security jail at Paremoremo, north of Auckland, which by all accounts is a dark and miserable place. He's in isolation, he's banned from all media, visitors and any kind of contact or communication with the outside world – good. It's upsetting we can't be trail blazers here and rewrite the way justice is served in this instance. After all, we are facing a new normal. This is unprecedented for us as a country. It's hard not to feel it, even though as psychologist Nigel Latta points out, "we weren't all attacked, only some of us were".He says "it feels like we were... but this simply isn't true". At a symbolic level it might be, but "at that dreadfully real level we were not all attacked. This was an attack against the Muslim community".Latta says the hard work lies ahead of us in terms of tackling casual racism, not being bystanders to barbs and passing comments, standing up, not standing back. The other challenge for us right now is being able to get on with our lives. Everything sort of got put on hold after last Friday afternoon didn't it?We are collectively shell shocked. It's hard to get past. But I heard another expert saying yesterday that we must get back to some semblance of normality, we must go back to our exercising and our daily rituals, get proper sleep, we must ensure life goes on.That's tough when we can't get past how it just won't feel the same again.
