Welcome to a special edition of NJ Spotlight News…Memorial Day officially kicks off the summer season and tonight we're using the broadcast to examine New Jersey's Shrinking Shoreline. We look at the significance this has on tourism and its impact on the state's economy. As well as the billions of federal and state dollars being spent to maintain New Jersey's beaches each year. To put it in context … New Jersey ranks number one in the country for spending on beach replenishment.  You can see it best from the air…. How climate change and sea level rise is impacting the coastline. In some sections beaches are now less than a football field wide.  And places like North Wildwood and Atlantic City are desperate for emergency repairs before the summer tourism season kicks into high gear…

Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom continues the Dom Giordano Program by welcoming in Robin Schaffer of Protect Our Coast New Jersey after another whale washed ashore near Long Beach Island. Immediately after the beaching, many on social media rushed to argue that again, this has nothing to do with the work of offshore wind companies. Robin explains the immediate connection between an increase in deaths of marine life with the push by Democrats and the Murphy administration to rush toward a ‘green energy' solution in windmills. Then, Dom welcomes in North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello onto the Dom Giordano Program after he and other City officials have faced criticism for considering a ban on tents and cabanas on their North Wildwood beaches. First, Dom, who ‘summers' in North Wildwood tells of all the things he loves about the little shore destination, with the Mayor explaining why what he loves draws people every summer to his town. Then, Dom asks Rosenello about the controversy over tents and cabanas, with the Mayor explaining that due to the small size of their beaches, they take up too much room and the opportunity for more to enjoy their great beaches. Then, Dom welcomes back critic Scott Cronick, who tells us what's worth watching over the weekend. First, Scott offers his thoughts on the final season and series finale of Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm, telling why he highly recommends the show albeit the political undertones. Then, Cronick recommends the most-watched FX series of all-time, Shogun, which he thinks may be remembered as one of the best miniseries of all time. Finally, Cronick tells why he's not as big of a fan of Resident Alien as many others are, telling why he found the plotlines redundant after a few episodes. (Photo by Getty Images)

Hereford Inlet Lighthouse (courtesy photo) Hereford Inlet, a break in the barrier islands along the east side of Cape May, New Jersey, was used by whalers as far back as the 17th century. Shifting sands and a strong current made the inlet dangerous for mariners. As coastal shipping and the use of the inlet increased, funds for a lighthouse were appropriated in 1872. A wood frame combined keeper's house and lighthouse began service in 1874. The beautiful Victorian design was the work of the Lighthouse Board's chief draftsman, architect Paul J. Pelz. W, Scott Jett and USCG Lt. PA Felipe DeFreitas, guest speaker at a National Lighthouse Day event in 2019. After automation, the building was neglected and boarded up for nearly 20 years. Then, in 1982, the lighthouse property was leased to the City of North Wildwood, and it was restored in the years that followed. Today the lighthouse is managed by the City of North Wildwood's Historical Commission. Our guest today, W. Scott Jett, is the city historian and the city clerk for the city of North Wildwood, and he's the chairman of the Historical Commission.

Meet Kevin Reardon, founder of The Shore House Hotel — a beachside lifestyle retreat built from a mid-century motel in North Wildwood, NJ. Kevin grew up in a blue collar family.  His idea of “success” looked like working on Wall Street, become a doctor, or becoming a lawyer, so after graduating from undergrad, he decided to pursue law and wound up getting his JD from the University of Pennsylvania. After a couple of years working at a very prestigious firm, Kevin decided that what he really wanted to do was get into hospitality…becoming a hotelier was what he'd dream about on nights and weekends in-between very late nights at his firm's office.  And then an opportunity to buy a fairly rundown motel on the Jersey shore presented itself.  And there was something about this particular motel that seemed to speak to Kevin…so, he raised a little bit of money from friends and family and decided to take the plunge. Tune in to hear the story of how Kevin build The Shore House Hotel, why he thinks STR owners and operators can make great hoteliers, and what his hot takes on the future of travel and hospitality look like. Marianna Papazoglou is a young woman on a mission. She has played at high level at Wildwood Catholic from the minute she stepped on the floor. Coach Steve DiPatri trusted her as a leader. She was called upon as a Freshman to help lead a young team and was named captain that year. Her drive and determination allowed her to score her 1,000th point in the playoffs vs Gil St. Bernard in the playoffs her Sophomore Year. She knew she was close before the game and when she hit that milestone she was bombarded by her teammates but Marianna was all business. It wasn't until the ball went out of bounds and play was stopped that she took a moment to celebrate but all she could think about was securing the win. Marianna is a total team player. She respects her coach and loves her teammates. She grew up and lives in North Wildwood, NJ. Her family owns the Original Hot Spot on the Wildwood Boardwalk where she works during the summer months. I'm told that the tourists favorite dish is the Gyro but she loves the Chicken Parm. Marianna recently decided to continue her basketball career by committing to the University of Pennsylvania. She looks forward to the change of scenery but is happy to be close enough to home so her family and friends can watch her play. Marianna is looking forward to playing for Coach Mike McLaughlin. Marianna is taking the down time during the quarantine to improve her ball handling and is getting ready for her last hurrah at Wildwood Catholic. 2,000 career points is within reach. She is following in her mom's footsteps but creating her own legacy. Here are some of her achievements to date: Basketball: Al Carino Second Team All-South Jersey Al Carino All-Non Public Team NJ.com Top Junior and Sophomore Cape Atlantic League First Team United Division Academic: Principal's List Student of the Month (2018) National Honor Society National Spanish Honor Society Top 10% of my class Ranked 12/449 in class Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish National Merit Commended Student The Theresa McGlade Memorial Award via The Al Carino Girls Basketball Club Check out her profile on Hudl. https://www.hudl.com/profile/14082928/Marianna-Papazoglou Check out her profile on Twitter. https://twitter.com/marianna_2219 *Video courtesy of Hudl. *Video courtesy of Jersey Sports Zone. *Video courtesy of Brian Cunniff-Coast Sports Today. *Gatorade and its logo are in no way involved in this podcast.

Jersey Shore Towns Take Hit on Property Values Research indicates that the increase in property values at some Jersey Shore towns is being stunted by rising sea levels. Towns including Brigantine, Atlantic City, Sea Isle City, and North Wildwood are among the top 20 locations impacted, with the burgeoning retirement town of  Ocean City being the hardest hit.  I'm a resident of the Jersey Shore and skeptical of these findings, but wanted further detail. I’m joined by Columbia University researcher Jeremy Porter to explain his perspective on the data.  Program Length: 24 minutes

Sunny with high temperatures in the low 50s. REMNANTS OF MORRIS CANAL BEING REBORN AS HIKING, BIKING TRAILS North Jersey’s Morris Canal was once the main mode of transportation for goods headed to New York. But time, transportation advances and development turned it into a relic, with only pieces of the original 102-mile footprint remaining, James M. O’Neill writes for The Record. Now the disjointed sections are being reclaimed as the Morris Canal Greenway, with a goal of creating hiking and biking parks stretching across six New Jersey counties. SCIENTISTS URGING STATE TO LIMIT CHEMICAL IN DRINKING WATER New Jersey scientists are urging the state to strictly limit a chemical that has been linked to cancer, developmental problems, and changes to the human immune system in the drinking water supply, Jon Hurdle reports in NJ Spotlight. This week the Drinking Water Quality Institute is considering a recommendation to set a limit of 13 parts per trillion for perfluorooctane sulfonate, or PFOS, as the level at which human health would be protected over a lifetime of exposure. The limit would be the strictest set by any state. HELP WANTED: GOV.-ELECT PHIL MURPHY HAS JOB OPPORTUNITIES Looking for a job in state government? The transition team for Gov.-elect Phil Murphy would like to see your résumé, Dustin Racioppi reports for The Record. Murphy said in a statement: “New Jersey’s greatest asset is its people. I call for all those interested in serving our administration to visit the Transition2018 website and submit their résumé for consideration. We will put an administration together that reflects New Jersey’s rich diversity of backgrounds and experiences, and we are committed to making those opportunities open to all.” LIGHTHOUSE IN NORTH WILDWOOD CAUGHT IN SQUABBLE A dispute between the city of North Wildwood and a nonprofit organization has left the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in a state of flux, John DeRosier reports for the Press of Atlantic City. The city is set to take over operation of the 143-year-old lighthouse on Jan. 1, contending that the nonprofit Friends of Hereford Inlet Lighthouse has failed to provide annual reports and that mistakes in a grant application cost the city $17,000. Mayor Patrick Rosenello also says that the nonprofit’s chairman, Steve Murray, has been rude to city employees. Murray disputes the city’s claims. UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE BACKING OUT OF DEAL WITH SCHIANO Former Rutgers head football coach Greg Schiano and the University of Tennessee signed on Sunday a memorandum of understanding for the Wyckoff native to take the helm of the Volunteers’ football program, Pete Thamel of Yahoo! reports. But Tennessee backed out of the deal later in the day after backlash from fans. Even White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders criticized the choice of Schiano, Keith Sargeant of NJ.com reports. Much of the criticism centers on allegations that when Schiano was an assistant at Penn State he kept quiet about Jerry Sandusky’s sex abuse of children. Schiano has vehemently denied those allegations. ‘STRANGER THINGS’ STAR TO APPEAR IN PROSECUTOR’S VIDEOS “Stranger Things” star Gaten Matarazzo will appear in two installments of public safety videos aimed at teenagers, Amanda Oglesby writes for the Asbury Park Press. The “Right Turns” series, produced by the Ocean County prosecutor’s office, are shown at high schools throughout the county. The videos featuring Matarazzo, 15, of Little Egg Harbor, will address distracted driving and what to do when pulled over by the police.
