If you want the best for your child's future AND want to also maintain a strong relationship along the way without being the nag, you're not alone. Monica is a high performing, very savvy parent from Northern California. She is the epitome of the over achiever and super organized mom!!  Monica was looking for a partner, someone to meet her where she is, value the knowledge she has in college admissions, and become the go-to to advise her daughter. Boom: Enter College Coach. Me. Dr. C. They say it takes a village, and when it comes to college admissions this could not be more true. When I first meet with a family, it's all about how everyone can contribute and how parents can be helpful without being invasive.  For me, as a Coach, my job is to remind each student how cool they are. It sounds simple, but Monica's daughter was actually VERY cool. I don't know if she knew how very cool she is, but with every opportunity I reminded her.  For Mira, the challenge was this: what is the story she needed to tell to overcome her slightly less than “perfect” transcript. My role is to help a student (and family) take a look at the transcript, the resume, any accomplishments or accolades and help to MAXIMIZE the choices and opportunities for each individual student. I'm so proud of Mira and Mom and Dad are super happy with the results!! Best Selling Author. TEDx Speaker. College Admission Expert. Football Enthusiast. Only a few weeks left of the semester to go, so it's fitting time to wrap up Season 3!In Reflections on Junior Year, I share a part of my Statement of Goals that I have been working on over the last several weeks as a part of my PhD application. Taking a PhD level course has been great, but the work I'm having to do to get in is HARD! One of the things I'm trying to better articulate is my WHY. It was so easy as an entrepreneur, but trying to get that elevator pitch version of “why a PhD in Education” has been a work in progress.Thank you to all of my guests this past season! You all received a personalized thank you in this reflection! Thank you to my students - every single one of you I've taught since I was a TA for the freshman business class at Drexel! And of course, I am so grateful to every single person who has taken the time to listen to this podcast. Since I'll be taking Quantitative Research next year, here are a few stats on the podcast:1,606 total downloads as of November 18, 2022 at 4:12 pm while I'm on a train to BWI - VACATION!!Industry Shifts with Brandon Thrash, my very first episode, continues to be the most downloaded at 99, followed by Reflections on Sophomore Year with yours truly at 83!PhD applications are due December 1st, and I'm supposed to hear back in March. I will be teaching again this coming Spring, but instead of Leadership, I'll be teaching Organizational Processes. And Team Processes is going back to 100% in person! So next semester will be yet another rollercoaster, but you know me, I'm along for the ride!Follow @beyondthevenuepodcast on IG for updates!

In today's show, Steve interviews Cate Latting, Executive Regional Manager at Young Entrepreneurs Across America.   This show starts with Cate sharing how she got involved with YEAA in the first place. Outgoing and athletic, Cate got a chance to co-op in her sophomore year. In this segment of the show, Cate talks a bit about the mental hurdles that she had to overcome when she first got involved in the painting business. Was it worth taking up all the challenges?   Next, Cate gives us some interesting insights into her summer stint where she ended up making an $18,000 profit from her painting job. Home-owners, Cate reveals, like to buy from young and excited students who are heavily invested in making a better future for themselves. Further, you will also learn how having an accountability partner inspired  Cate on to put in her best.   One theme that we discuss quite a bit is the importance of communication and follow-up. As is common with many folks who are managing their first business venture, Cate was afraid that incessant follow-up would kill her sale. She talks about her struggle with overcoming this mental hurdle.     Cate also shares how, given the chance she will handle her employees differently. Having gone through 25 painters throughout summer made her realize that she needs to better incentivize her employees. In her second year at YEAA, Cate is managing a team of 7 first-year interns. How does she plan on mentoring these interns to have a more successful second year?   We wrap with this show with Cate sharing some great advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. Tune in for some excellent insights!   What You Will Learn in This Show: How to communicate with prospects and convince them to hire you How to deal with your employees and build a dream team for your business How an accountability partner can inspire you to put in your best And so much more...   Resources: Young Entrepreneurs Across America

My sophomore year was full of ups and downs. I went into the year not knowing where to sit at lunch, and unsure of myself. I ended up going to Germany, quitting gymnastics, joining the cheer team, and becoming a track star. As all these amazing things happened, I spent more time with my teacher, science guy, which quickly became something more.    Key Takeaways:    [8:30] Going to gymnastics camp again and feeling harassed  [11:03] Gymnastics camp giving me a social life [12:36] My eventful first day of 10th grade as a cheerleader [13:58] Mr. Smith made such an impact on my life [17:07] Going to science guy's class and being humiliated  [19:34] Enjoying cheerleading, dances, getting drunk and in trouble [24:35] Quitting gymnastics and struggling with my asthma  [26:25] Keeping myself insanely busy and trying to find a new social group [28:39] Starting to spend time with science guy in his apartment [30:28] I struggle with boundaries and where lines can blur with teachers  [34:01] Making excuses to spend more and more time with science guy  [36:30] Going out for track because of science guy, but struggling with asthma  [41:24] Feeling like I fit in, becoming a track star, and getting popular  [45:57] Having sex for the first time at 15 and the trauma repeating in my life  [50:53] I recreated the abuse and trauma from when I was younger  Resources:   The Silence of Great Distance  The Body Keeps the Score Connect with Barb:   Website   Facebook    Instagram   YouTube   The Molly B Foundation

PerI Abrams just got back to campus to start her sophomore year at Hamilton College in upstate New York. Her freshman year was amazing...sort of. She had a great first semester (you can hear all about that in Episode 12).  But second semester was rougher. She says little things derailed her and she wound up sleeping in some, skipping a few classes, avoiding social situations, and worrying about disappointing her parents, and herself. And then...she got covid. The forced break helped her reboot, though, and have some epiphanies about what she needs to do differently this year. One strategy Peri talks about is making sure there's a support network in place *in case she needs it. She might, she might not, but knowing you have relationships with people on campus who can help makes a difference, Peri says. Hear more of Peri's story and insights, plus, how the chocolate milk supply is flowing.

Guest BioAfter competing both indoor and on the beach for UCLA, Savvy made a huge impression in her first year as a professional in 2021.  Even though her athleticism is incredible to watch, her blend of tenacity as an athlete and sensitivity as a human has made her a joy to get to know.  Her willingness to be transparent and share her story, which includes an understanding of what it means to live with anxiety, makes her an even more compelling and relatable athlete to watch in the years to come.Key Points, Top Takeaways and Memorable Quotes“I think that their parenting styles are based off how they were raised.” 3:03“I want to be the most flexible partner, not only physically in playing left or right, as a teammate as a partner, emotionally and mentally I want to be able to communicate with them.” 3:53“I play my best when I play with someone that I have good chemistry with, someone that I get along with.” 4:33“If I have good chemistry with someone or the same qualities, and we can have fun off the court, I think that's really huge.” 5:36“You graduate high school and you're like the best on your team or the top whatever on your team.  Then you go somewhere like UCLA and you're like I'm gonna go play all the time and I'm gonna dominate, and that's not always the case.” 6:06“I'm a big believer that everything happens for a reason.  I made a stupid mistake that I learned from, but if I didn't have those 5 weeks to just go be a freshman and go party and go be dumb and do my thing, I don't know if  I would be where I am today.” 7:58“When I'm on the B side my goal was to fire them up and take down the A side.” 9:36“A lot of what I learned at UCLA was it's not always how you imagine it to be, but I wouldn't trade my experience one bit.” 9:54“I learned so much more through those seasons that the team wasn't that great or I had a slump in my game.  It was really challenging for me trying to lead a team feeling alone or not feeling like I could be the true full leader that I wanted to be.” 13:00“I think that when people imagine a leader, they imagine the captain of the team and the person who plays all the time, but you can lead by example in the weight room even if you're not playing, you can lead when you're on the bench, you can cheer super loud, you can be supportive.” 14:28“You can still be a leader whether you're a freshman or a fifth year.  You can be a leader whether you play or you don't.  As long as you're working hard, as long as you can get respect by working hard, showing up on time everyday, and you are being a good person, people will respect you and listen to you no matter what age you are, no matter how talented you are, and I think that people forget that.” 14:50“Don't push your body past it's limits because then you'll be out longer!” 19:16“If I'm watching tv, why am I not on the floor stretching?  And that's what I'm continuing to learn.” 22:45“My athleticism will only take me so far.  I have to get smarter on and off the court, take care of my body, make sure, do I really need that glass of wine tonight with dinner? No, probably not.” 23:37“When I have a couple beers, I sleep terrible!” 24:03“As long as I surround myself with people who are doing the same thing, which a lot of us are, it's really helpful.” 29:33“If I go to a competition and I'm like this is my job and I need to make money, and I play like that, then I'm not gonna perform.  I need to play because I love it.” 30:13“There is more to life than sports and if you're not feeling it, you have to take time to heal.  Just as you would take time to heal an injury, you have to take time to heal your mind.” 33:09“Everyone's process is so different.  Where I am at 23, hopefully I'm still playing in 10 years or more.  I might not be the same person when I'm 33, but at least where I'm at right now, I love the game and I'm doing it because I love it.” 34:47“My favorite thing to hear is ‘I just love how much fun you're having.  I loved seeing you smile.'” 36:19“What other sports are there where the pros are on vacation with these random guests?” 39:38“I feel people are going to follow me and support me and like what I'm doing if it's authentic.” 42:45“As long as I have a good attitude and I don't let that get to me and I continue to play because I love it, not because of the certain partner that I want, then it's all going to work out the way it is supposed to.”  44:40“There are days where I get asked to go play with people who are better than me and I'm like I have to go prove myself.  But if I wanna actually improve and  get better, working on vision stuff, holding on defense, and all these things that I need to do to get better.  If I'm working on that stuff, I'm not going to be at my best because I'm going to get worse before I can actually improve at that.”  50:08“It's all finding the balance.” 53:53“You never know who you're going to meet that might help you.” 55:13“If you don't love soccer the way I love volleyball, you shouldn't play in college.” 57:55“Enjoy the process.” 1:06:09“Continuing to remember, you're playing a sport and it's meant to be fun and just keep enjoying the process, keep having fun, and keep being grateful for the opportunities you have.  You're healthy.  You're able to play beach volleyball, and not many people can say that.”  1:06:25“I am physically and mentally able to go play a sport that I love.  I have a healthy family and healthy friends, and I'm living in an amazing place.” 1:06:55“Have fun, enjoy life, it goes by quick.” 1:08:00 Show Notes1:11 - Where do you come from? 3:03 - Parenting Styles3:52 - Being a Positive Partner6:02 - College Career and Highlights6:48 - Freshman Year Suspension Obstacle9:03 - Sophomore Year and My Role9:54 - What I Learned at UCLA10:26 - Senior Year and COVID13:45 - Learning to Lead  15:36 - Pac-12 Pair of the Week Clips17:38 - Back Injury Rehab22:05 - Discipline to be a Good Patient/Next Level Athlete24:00 - Oura Ring and Sleep26:09 - Diet27:04 - Article on Why You Shouldn't Look at Your Phone Before Bed28:30 - How diet is affected by sleep28:55 - How there is a time and a place for things - moderation30:10 - Finding the balance of being 23 and having super high hard goals30:57 - Netflix Tennis Documentary by Marty Fish31:58 - Savvy's struggle with anxiety33:33 - Lifelong Love for the Game37:43 - SOB Volleyball Vacations 39:54 - Volleyball Community in Hermosa Beach, CA41:11 - The Struggle with Social Media43:40 - Points and Partnerships46:35 - AVP Manhattan Open with Zana Muno 48:40 - Expect to Learn50:08 - Invitation to Play Up51:16 - First Generation from NCAA52:58 - Financial Priorities and Balance54:37 - Finding Sponsors and Support57:40 - Siblings 1:01:14 - Rally Highlight in Atlanta1:03:55 - Karaoke nights - Jeff Samuels and Good Directions by Billy Currington1:05:04 - Wrap Up and Thanks1:05:50 - Takeaway for the Younger Generations Links & Where to Find SavvyIG - @savvysimoSouth of the Border Vacations - sobvolleyballvacations.comFeatured Athlete - https://bebetterwithwendyjones.com/featured-athletes/

In 2019 Singer-Songwriter Phillip Vo released his debut EP, Sophomore Year, sharing some of his life experiences as a 21-year-old college student studying at the University of Mobile, Alabama. This year Phillip is not only a senior, graduating with a degree in music business, but he is also writing for a new project, a four song EP he plans to release soon.Sharing incredible music and unpacking creative processing are two of my favorite subjects to chat about on the podcast. This conversation with Phillip not only hints at his upcoming EP project, but also offers dialogue about his ideas of how art is designed to be shared and music is made to serve. Friends, you are going to adore Phillip's brilliancy and his genuine heart for God. If you like to talk songwriter's shop or are a creative at heart, this episode is for you!Official show notes available at www.kohliebrowning.comMusic, "Young Love" by Phillip Vowww.instagram.com/phillipvomusic/
