If you want the best for your child's future AND want to also maintain a strong relationship along the way without being the nag, you're not alone. Monica is a high performing, very savvy parent from Northern California. She is the epitome of the over achiever and super organized mom!! Monica was looking for a partner, someone to meet her where she is, value the knowledge she has in college admissions, and become the go-to to advise her daughter. Boom: Enter College Coach. Me. Dr. C. They say it takes a village, and when it comes to college admissions this could not be more true. When I first meet with a family, it's all about how everyone can contribute and how parents can be helpful without being invasive. For me, as a Coach, my job is to remind each student how cool they are. It sounds simple, but Monica's daughter was actually VERY cool. I don't know if she knew how very cool she is, but with every opportunity I reminded her. For Mira, the challenge was this: what is the story she needed to tell to overcome her slightly less than “perfect” transcript. My role is to help a student (and family) take a look at the transcript, the resume, any accomplishments or accolades and help to MAXIMIZE the choices and opportunities for each individual student. I'm so proud of Mira and Mom and Dad are super happy with the results!! Best Selling Author. TEDx Speaker. College Admission Expert. Football Enthusiast. Only a few weeks left of the semester to go, so it's fitting time to wrap up Season 3!In Reflections on Junior Year, I share a part of my Statement of Goals that I have been working on over the last several weeks as a part of my PhD application. Taking a PhD level course has been great, but the work I'm having to do to get in is HARD! One of the things I'm trying to better articulate is my WHY. It was so easy as an entrepreneur, but trying to get that elevator pitch version of “why a PhD in Education” has been a work in progress.Thank you to all of my guests this past season! You all received a personalized thank you in this reflection! Thank you to my students - every single one of you I've taught since I was a TA for the freshman business class at Drexel! And of course, I am so grateful to every single person who has taken the time to listen to this podcast. Since I'll be taking Quantitative Research next year, here are a few stats on the podcast:1,606 total downloads as of November 18, 2022 at 4:12 pm while I'm on a train to BWI - VACATION!!Industry Shifts with Brandon Thrash, my very first episode, continues to be the most downloaded at 99, followed by Reflections on Sophomore Year with yours truly at 83!PhD applications are due December 1st, and I'm supposed to hear back in March. I will be teaching again this coming Spring, but instead of Leadership, I'll be teaching Organizational Processes. And Team Processes is going back to 100% in person! So next semester will be yet another rollercoaster, but you know me, I'm along for the ride!Follow @beyondthevenuepodcast on IG for updates!
In today's show, Steve interviews Cate Latting, Executive Regional Manager at Young Entrepreneurs Across America. This show starts with Cate sharing how she got involved with YEAA in the first place. Outgoing and athletic, Cate got a chance to co-op in her sophomore year. In this segment of the show, Cate talks a bit about the mental hurdles that she had to overcome when she first got involved in the painting business. Was it worth taking up all the challenges? Next, Cate gives us some interesting insights into her summer stint where she ended up making an $18,000 profit from her painting job. Home-owners, Cate reveals, like to buy from young and excited students who are heavily invested in making a better future for themselves. Further, you will also learn how having an accountability partner inspired Cate on to put in her best. One theme that we discuss quite a bit is the importance of communication and follow-up. As is common with many folks who are managing their first business venture, Cate was afraid that incessant follow-up would kill her sale. She talks about her struggle with overcoming this mental hurdle. Cate also shares how, given the chance she will handle her employees differently. Having gone through 25 painters throughout summer made her realize that she needs to better incentivize her employees. In her second year at YEAA, Cate is managing a team of 7 first-year interns. How does she plan on mentoring these interns to have a more successful second year? We wrap with this show with Cate sharing some great advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. Tune in for some excellent insights! What You Will Learn in This Show: How to communicate with prospects and convince them to hire you How to deal with your employees and build a dream team for your business How an accountability partner can inspire you to put in your best And so much more... My sophomore year was full of ups and downs. I went into the year not knowing where to sit at lunch, and unsure of myself. I ended up going to Germany, quitting gymnastics, joining the cheer team, and becoming a track star. As all these amazing things happened, I spent more time with my teacher, science guy, which quickly became something more. Key Takeaways: [8:30] Going to gymnastics camp again and feeling harassed [11:03] Gymnastics camp giving me a social life [12:36] My eventful first day of 10th grade as a cheerleader [13:58] Mr. Smith made such an impact on my life [17:07] Going to science guy's class and being humiliated [19:34] Enjoying cheerleading, dances, getting drunk and in trouble [24:35] Quitting gymnastics and struggling with my asthma [26:25] Keeping myself insanely busy and trying to find a new social group [28:39] Starting to spend time with science guy in his apartment [30:28] I struggle with boundaries and where lines can blur with teachers [34:01] Making excuses to spend more and more time with science guy [36:30] Going out for track because of science guy, but struggling with asthma [41:24] Feeling like I fit in, becoming a track star, and getting popular [45:57] Having sex for the first time at 15 and the trauma repeating in my life [50:53] I recreated the abuse and trauma from when I was younger Resources: The Silence of Great Distance The Body Keeps the Score Connect with Barb: Website Facebook Instagram YouTube The Molly B Foundation

McDonald's taking an hour to deliver an order, getting caught by campus security for weed, and how bad the bars are in Syracuse. College is a very strange place. This is the finale of my sophomore year and it was a good year of college even though covid-19 was full-blown destroying people at that time. This is an episode that was recorded during my sophomore year of college and was totally forgotten about. PerI Abrams just got back to campus to start her sophomore year at Hamilton College in upstate New York. Her freshman year was amazing...sort of. She had a great first semester (you can hear all about that in Episode 12). But second semester was rougher. She says little things derailed her and she wound up sleeping in some, skipping a few classes, avoiding social situations, and worrying about disappointing her parents, and herself. And then...she got covid. The forced break helped her reboot, though, and have some epiphanies about what she needs to do differently this year. One strategy Peri talks about is making sure there's a support network in place *in case she needs it. She might, she might not, but knowing you have relationships with people on campus who can help makes a difference, Peri says. Hear more of Peri's story and insights, plus, how the chocolate milk supply is flowing.
