Horse-like demon from Orcadian mythology

I found some more weird creatures to go along with last week's show. Things like the Blemmyae, who have their faces on their chest. The Adlet, a human with the body of a dog. The Nuckelavee is a demon from Northern Scotland. More creatures to keep an eye out for.
In this week's episode, we take a look at the Nuckelavee and other Scottish folklore, including the Bogle.OBSCURATA - Apple Spotify AmazonThe BOOKBY US A COFFEEJoin Sarah's new FACEBOOK GROUPSubscribe to our PATREONEMAIL us your storiesJoin us on INSTAGRAMJoin us on TWITTERJoin us on FACEBOOKVisit our WEBSITEResearch Links:Orkneyjar – The Folklore of the Orkney Islands (sea myths and the Nuckelavee) – http://www.orkneyjar.comDennison, Walter Traill (1891). From nuggles to brags, the Ceffyl Dŵr to nixies, there's plenty of reasons to be nervous about horse-shaped monsters on the shoreline - but fear not, as Martin is here to demystify Kelpies and mythical water horses in general!Part of the "Three Ravens Bestiary" series, we start by discussing the links between seaweed and kelpies, the first appearances of mythical Kelpies in the poetry of William Collins, Robert Burns and Walter Scott, and how the history of horse riding is inextricably linked with tales of monstrous horses in folklore. It's a galloping ride that takes us from the Highlands to Ancient Scythia and back again, and along the way we're venturing through early French ballads, talking broomsticks, Roman myths, and Dark Age stone monuments, while discussing the Pictish Beast, the Nuckelavee, shelleycoats, and much more!Along the way, we'll have advice on how to spot a Kelpie in the wild, what to do to tame one, and how to kill these naughty beasts if such a thing proves necessary - although, as usual, there's some pretty weird stuff to uncover as we venture down to the water's edge, from Fairy Locks to backwards hooves, the Kelpie's links to Virgin Mary, and a possible battle between an early saint and the Loch Ness Monster... The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. If you're looking to get your creep on, you've come to the right place: the eighteenth installment of Do Be A Monster. We'll be setting sail for the Orkney Islands in today's episode and you may want to watch what you eat, because if you catch sight of the Nuckelavee, you're probably going to upchuck. We suggest a nice hot plate of haggis, neeps, and tatties (and be sure to stay close to fresh water). Later, we'll be heating things up with the charming Mongolian Death Worm who has been known to slither around the Gobi Desert. Hold onto your butt if you've got a desert cruise planned for the summer! Get them ears pointy, them fangs sharpened up, those eyes yellow and glowing, and throw in your headphones; it's monster huntin' time.
Welcome to Campfire Tales! Every two weeks you can enjoy a short story read by one of our contributors. This week we have The Nuckelavee, written by Graeme Johncock and read by Rebecca Brown
We journey to the cold waters of the North Sea for Jenny to tell the famed story of the Nuckelavee as captured by farmer and folklorist Walter Trail Dennison. The nuckelavee is a skinless horse who haunts Orkney's coasts, terrifying travelers. He also brings blight and plague to crops, livestock and even humans with his terrible toxic breath. Meanwhile, Annie will do anything to avoid the nuckelavee, including summoning the ancient Sea Mither to ensure the nuckelavee is trapped for summer.Independently made in the Highlands, Stories of Scotland is gratefully funded through listener support on Patreon.www.patreon.com/storiesofscotlandCome and see Annie's play! The Wound, the Rag and the In-Between follows a Highland journalist as she unravels a Victorian death. She exposes secrets that had been buried for generations. Phoenix is an inferno and Ivy has mended her ways so she won't go to Hell. Which includes visiting Terri in Phoenix prior to November.Whiskey picks (yes, we're back on the whiskey):Ivy - Hidden Barn. Has a kick. Taste it neat, but then cut it with some ice. 112 proof. Turns out Ivy witnessed or maybe influenced some creative tasting notes that Graham McTavish came up with on Bourbon With Friends.Terri - Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof Rye. 112 proof for 112 degrees outside. But Terri mixed with ginger ale.Megan - water. But she did sample a 1968 Crown Royal bottle that she describes as GOLD.Terri might send some Sassenachs in search of Gregarious Goat down in Texas. We know they'll all be in Total Wine stores anyway. Was Mrs. Raven's storyline just an excuse for Claire to wander off and get captured? That animal pen really wasn't doing any sort of confinement work at all. Claire had the whole run of the fort. Terri wants Jamie's hair to be loose for once. Ivy praises the wigs this year. Why is the show including storylines that are just going to end within one episode anyway? Walter Woodcock's story could have been skipped and it probably wouldn't make any difference. The ax murdering couple, same thing.A brief review of Richardson and his motives.Ivy is backing Rob Cameron's chutzpah inviting himself to dinner at Roger & Bri's house.Megan saw the best chemistry in the episode: it was between Roger & Rob.It definitely wasn't there between Ian & Rachel this week.Jamie & Claire were glamping in that humongous tent. Jamie's wig and monologue were both amazing.Ivy wants an apology for Jemmy, because he was right all along about the Nuckelavee.Predictions for the mid-season cliffhanger. Please rate us on your podcast platform! We swerved around all over the place, chatting about how he was inspired to bring together the Homebrew Havoc community; how he finds time to DM, and we even took some time to check out the arse end of Norse Mythology as we discovered the horror that is a Nuckelavee. (Google it, I dare you). Matt Durrant (the voice of Belciar Myialtheshtealliac) stepped up and was on co-host duties this week as well. So come join us, pull up a chair and enjoy! As promised here are some the content creators details Paul references in this episode.Tavern stories - @StoriesTavern Bogus cheesecake - @Bogus_Cheese Aely - @AelyryaPayne Callum - @CLeeDandD Shiv - @IoShiv Toni - @ShawFireDesigns Callum - @DMDMStudios Abyssal Brews (Matthew and Fernando) - @AbyssalBrews The Fluffy Folio - @fluffy_folioDungeon Dudes - @dungeon_dudesHomebrew Havoc Discord link https://discord.gg/ekpW2u7rUWMusic by Air Drawn Dagger. This week we take a look at the tale of the Nuckelavee, a demonic entity from Scottish folklore. The most notable aspect of this creature is its obscene appearance, beyond that, it is said to blight crops and bring pestilence to livestock and people. Welcome back, Creeps and Freaks! This week we talk about the truly terrifying Nuckelavee.Join along with us as we discuss this disturbing Scottish cryptid!
This one is super creepy, the description alone of this character is terrifying! This episode comes with a great cocktail, the Penicillin. Donna continues her tradition of horrifying stories, will she EVER do a happy story? I'm definitely gonna have nightmares. We chat new years resolutions, do you have any?
We are somewhere in between moist skeleton and meaty, fleshy bits. Plus, remember kids, if you're going to commit cannibalism, don't eat the brains.

Someone killed my dog, and I've got a rifle and anger to deal with it. Then, I find who's to blame, and things get ugly.. In this episode, I dive into the Scottish mythology of the Nuckelavee, a terrifying horse-human hybrid from your nightmares. We'll look at this frightful spirit as well as its weakness, which brings me to the topic of boundaries. I'll share how my lack of boundaries has hampered my life, and why boundaries can be such gifts - even when you're telling people no. We'll look at the importance of boundaries in our lives, and I'll share a framework about how to think about boundaries with those you're seeking to serve.
