As we discussed on the mailing list most of the time was taken by the migration to Mastodon, and the implementation of the mirrors on the Community Content Delivery Network. Some daily stats are been updated on https://hub.hackerpublicradio.org/hpr_ccdn_stats.tsv Summary of the changes to the repo https://repo.anhonesthost.net/HPR Dave updated his tooling for processing shows and they are now available on the Gitea repo. We finally got around to creating the HPR Documentation wiki. Community Content Delivery Network (CCDN) A location to track the deployment of the HPR Community Content Delivery Network, that provides a mirror network for our content. HPR Website Design This is literally in the whiteboard phase of the HPR website redesign. Where we can track Compatibility of the clients subscribed to our feeds. Useful Resources Where we can link to other free culture sites that provide useful services. Requested Topics Where we can track topics that have been requested, and link to shows that addressed them. There is also a list with information about Podcatcher and Podcasting Platform Compatibility. If anyone wants to adopt a player then please do so. The section on Workflow will be changing shortly due to Dave stepping aside, and also the need to distribute to multiple end points. All the processing will happen first, and then all the checks will be done at the same stage just prior to posting. For this to work we need help finding a simple manageable WYSIWYG editor that can produce sane HTML when the host uploads the show. We also need a new system to distribute the files from an origin to all the mirrors. Other changes and fixes. The day of the week is now available on the website. Fixed the RSS feed to show explicit status. Fixed a bug that limited the future feed to just 10 shows. Fixed a typo in the status page. Following feedback, added emphasis about the upcoming two weeks, to the scheduling guidelines. Notable shout out to the people who are promoting HPR and are helping people out with audio issues. Provide feedback on this episode.

With the rough, rolling, cold, wet ferry ride behind us, we disembarked gratefully at the Windigo dock on the southwest corner of Isle Royale National Park. Isle Royale, a 45 mile long and 9 mile wide bedrock island, is teeming with life that somehow made the treacherous journey. We hoisted our packs and started off down the trail. Before long, we met several pairs of hikers just ending their trips. We asked about their route on the island, their hometown, and which ferry they took. In essence, we asked “How did you get here?” Mostly they used the water route, but one couple arrived by air in a float plane. Historically, making winter crossings by dogsled was also common. Isle Royale is not an easy place to get to, or to get around, and yet life surrounded us on all sides. Soon I started asking “How did you get here?” to everything we saw.

Any other business Developing new static feeds RSS feeds are currently being created in real time on hub.hackerpublicradio.org. The plan has always been to make all feeds static, generated by the site-generator script in the hpr_generator repository. Changing RSS feeds is a dangerous process in that feed readers, podcatchers and so on can be triggered by what appear like insignificant changes, making them download files that have already been downloaded, even though they are the not different. Work is ongoing to produce new (static) feeds, but they will need extensive testing before they can be released to the world at large. To do this we will need testers, so it would be appreciated if we could call upon volunteers to assist with this process.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 15, 2024 is: wane WAYN verb To wane is to become smaller or less, or in other words, to decrease in size, extent, or degree. // The national scandal caused her popularity to wane. See the entry > Examples: “In 2023, Royal Caribbean's bookings hit an all-time high ahead of the launch of its newest ship, the Icon of the Seas. Interest has yet to wane: The three strongest booking weeks in the company's history were at the start of 2024 and ‘wave season,' when cruise lines typically roll out flashy discounts to incentivize reservations.” — Brittany Chang, Business Insider, 20 Mar. 2024 Did you know? In her book Braiding Sweetgrass, scientist Robin Wall Kimmerer, an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, recounts some of the stories of her people surrounding Windigos, fearsome, shrieking monsters that prey on human flesh: “The Windigo is most powerful in the Hungry Times. With the warm breezes his power wanes.” Wane is a verb used when something—such as strength, power, or influence—decreases or diminishes, usually with the implication that the lessening is gradual, natural, or—as in the case of the Windigo—seasonal. Daylight wanes, as does summer. In a classroom, one's attention may be said to wane if, minute by minute, one becomes more interested in watching birds through the window than following the points of the professor's lecture. For centuries, wane has also been called upon to describe the seeming decrease in the size of the moon in the later phases of the lunar cycle. The traditional opposite of wane is wax, a once common but now rare synonym of grow. Wane and wax have been partnered in references to the moon since the Middle Ages.

Any other business Craig Maloney, host of the Open Metal Cast We received the sad news that fellow podcaster and host of the Open Metal Cast, Craig Maloney passed away. Obituary Markdown issue in show notes Syntax highlighting for fenced code blocks. An issue was raised on the Gitea repository for the hpr_generator. Show notes using Markdown fenced blocks which specify a language (e.g. python) are not being syntax highlighted as expected. This was turned off because the highlighting is implemented as HTML ( and tags) which was stripped by software on archive.org when the notes were uploaded. In case this restriction has been lifted, we will try uploading an example to see if highlighting is now available.
Tonight we are joined by director Gabe Torres and actor Marco Fuller to peel the flesh from the bones of their new film, The Windigo(2024)! The Windigo: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_windigo#:~:text=Where%20to%20watch%20The%20Windigo&text=Rent%20The%20Windigo%20on%20Apple,TV%2C%20Prime%20Video%2C%20Vudu. Special Guests: Gabe Torres and Marco Fuller.
Welcome…to the graveyard. I am joined by Gabe Torres, the director of the film The Windigo, which is available on Amazon, Apple TV, and Vudu. The film will be playing in Los Angeles at the Cine Lounge on March 29th as well. We are going to discuss how Gabe got involved with the film, what it was like shooting in Michigan during the winter and at night, the importance of working with an experienced creature actor, if the cast really wanted to sage the set, and Gabe will also provide some advice to aspiring filmmakers. After the interview I will talk about my “fun with YouTube” when trying to upload my latest episode of Catacombs of Horror. You're definitely going to want to hear this one! The Graveyard Show Podcast is available everywhere podcasts exist as well as YouTube. And as you exit the graveyard I would like to remind you to please…lock the gate behind you…we wouldn't want anyone to get out. Until next time...

In our FIRST CHOP Tim finds out what's AFTER DEATH, then dives into some STREET TRASH, while Brian takes on the WINDIGO and DARK HARVEST! Then we'll take a spoiler-free look at LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL. (We warned about spoilers but ultimately didn't give anything away, so fear not).

Ryan is a Cryptozoological researcher and folklorist. While his studies tend to focus more on the Wendigo, Yee Naaldlooshii and Dogman, He is well versed in the more obscure takes of Sasquatch. He is currently working on a duo of books: The first is detailing the rich and illustrious history of the Wendigo. The second, the follow up, will focus on the lore and oral traditions behind the Yee Naaldlooshii. While he may come off as a doubter or skeptic to some, he, like so many others, is an experiencer. Years ago, he encountered a Hyena-like creature that many categorize as a Dogman. He has had paranormal experiences as well. It's his belief that a healthy dose of skepticism is needed in the fields of Cryptozoology and the Paranormal. It may not be a popular method, but he approaches any and all topics with critical thinking. You can hear his takes and opinions on a wide variety of topics ranging from the Black-eyed children, to Devil Monkeys to Goatman on numerous shows. He is also a huge monster and Kaiju enthusiast.Click that play button, and let's unravel the mysteries of the UNTOLD! Join me for a retelling of Algernon Blackwood's Wendigo, his take on the truly terrifying Native American and First Nations folktale/modern day cryptid. They say the most treasured folktales are often the most spellbinding. The secret ones that are often not spoken of. Dark and pervasive legends that twist our thoughts down the deepest, shadow filled cordoors of our minds. The thrill of conceptualizing such tales that could potentially blur the lines of disbelief and truth, all while taunting us with everlasting scars on our memories. Why do we crave such stories that we are uprepared to hear? Is it like a drug? An addiction? If what we hear can leave a lasting impression on us, why do we continue to risk encountering evil with every turn of the page? Craving more episodes? The Wendigo Part Two of TwoAnother episode of wonderful, Wendigo stories! In the bleak, bitter winters of the East Coast of Canada and the Great Plains and Lakes of America, something waits in the forest. Is that a cry from a tortured animal you hear? This is no animal you recognise, as you strain your ears against the unforgiving, ice cold wind that whips through the trees. The cry becomes a shriek and it's getting louder, a cacophony of noise as your blood begins to curdle in your veins. Your heart skips a beat and then doubles in pace as you realise you are not alone in the forest, something is watching, stalking. With an insatiable hunger for human flesh, the Wendigo, Windigo Windigo, Witigo, Witiko, and Wee-Tee-Go (roughly translating as evil spirt of mankind) has been spoken of by the indigenous people for centuries. Learn more here; https://bit.ly/3JMizCX Campfire Conversation: The opening discussion reflected on Groundhog Day results, including Punxsutawney Phil vs Sun Prairie's Jimmy the Groundhog (the official one, according to Congress.) The groundhog is a legendary animal for Wisconsin to some extent because of that. Once the Campfire Conversation got underway, discussions started on real Wisconsin animals as Ramsay went over some of the state records for sizes of deer, bears, a variety of fish, and more. We discussed Boone & Crockett scores, which develops the standards for records and awards for animals. Eric, Ana, Josh, and Ramsay then ventured into animal lore: land, sea, and sky creatures that are and have been myths - but possibly real - in Wisconsin history. Sea serpents in Lake Mendota in Madison; Devil's Lake outside Baraboo; Pepi, the Lake Pepin Monster of the Mississippi River; a Lake Winnebago Monster; and the Tyranena legend in Lake Mills with the Rock Lake Monster. The word “Pleasiosaur” comes up a lot. We then moved to the sky as Ramsay discussed the legend of thunderbirds; and then hit terra ferma with stories about the Windigo, the Hodag, and more on land. Inside SponsorsJefferson County: Located along the Madwaukee Corridor between Milwaukee and Madison, Jefferson County boasts over 130 miles of paddle trails on 8 different rivers and streams, providing opportunities for paddlers of all levels. Take in lunch or dinner at one of the many restaurants and pubs along the way. The county is a hub of bicycle manufacturing and home of Trek Bicycle; Jefferson County's 60 miles of paved and gravel bike paths are a must see for a scenic tour of the rural landscapes, offering seamless connections to communities. For outdoor winter fun, check out the counties 225 miles of snowmobile Trails, 14 miles of groomed cross country ski trails, ice fishing tournaments, and the famous Knickerbacher Ice Festival. The regions lakes offer exceptional fishing and boating opportunities on over 13,000 acres of lakes. Turning Season: News & Conversations on Our Adventure Toward a Life-Sustaining Society
I guess I was believing some "bright green fairytales" myself - because the truths in Bright Green Lies burst a few bubbles in my mind. In a tiny nutshell: Solar, wind, hydro, and recycling do worse than not solve our problems. They continue the harms of industrial society, and divert the attention of people who want to address our ecological crisis away from what matters most. This book intensified some of my biggest personal questions, especially about relinquishment, and my ongoing participation in destructive ways of life.So I was prepared to feel the weight of all this when I spoke with Max Wilbert, one of the co-authors of Bright Green Lies.Instead, I felt lighter. I felt heartened. I felt grateful. Once again, I am reminded, there's nothing like connecting with someone who's bringing their whole mind, heart, and activist body to The Great Turning. Max is a community organizer, writer, photographer, and wilderness guide, living in rural Oregon with his family. He has been part of grassroots political work for 20 years. He dove right in with me to: what he loves about being alivewhat's breaking his hearthis take on the "Business as Usual" story, emphasizing the short-term advantages gained by those who are willing to desecrate the living Earth and oppress other peoplehis background in labor activism, and how we've come further now than simply wanting more just distribution of industrial measures of economic wealththe cautionary tale of the insatiable spirit of Wetiko, or Windigo (as described in the books Columbus and Other Cannibals, and Braiding Sweetgrass, among others), and the possibility of co-creating different culture by telling different storieshow it's not that easy or obvious to relinquish the ecocidal aspects of the lifestyles we currently enjoy - and how social change has always been messythe campaign to protect the Nevada area known in English as Thacker Pass, and in Paiute as Peehee Mu'huh, from becoming an open pit lithium minelooking around wherever you are to find something worth fighting forand a future we can't imagine yet, knowing we can be creative about how we transform.I have so much appreciation for the work Max is doing in the world, and deep gratitude for this wide-ranging conversation. Hit Play now, and after you listen, come to the show notes for links to the books we mention, more about protecting Thacker Pass / Peehee Mu'huh, and great resources from Max. Let's carry the weight together, and keep enacting our active hope.Show notes: turningseason.com/episode29

This week, Anna and Amber hunker down around the campfire to talk about things that go bump in the night, and encounter some common themes from around the world. Amber fangirls over a baby-snatching Mesopotamian demon and stumbles upon a familiar monster in Native American myth, while Anna offers some DIY advice for combating medieval witches. To learn more about these (and other!) boogeypeople, check out: The Epic of Atraḥasis (Livius)Heffron, Yağmur. “Revisiting ‘Noise' (rigmu) in Atra-ḫasīs in Light of Baby Incantations.” Journal of Near Eastern Studies, Vol. 73, No. 1 (April 2014), pp. 83-93.Michel, Cécile. “Une incantation paléo-assyrienne contre Lamaštum.” Orientalia, NOVA SERIES, Vol. 66, No. 1 (1997), pp. 58-64.Potts, D.T., D.L. The Wendigo is known by several names — Windigo, Witigo, Witiko, and Wee-Tee-Go — but each roughly translates to “the evil spirit that devours mankind.” “The Wendigo was gaunt to the point of emaciation, its desiccated skin pulled tightly over its bones. With its bones pushing out against its skin, its complexion the ash-gray of death, and its eyes pushed back deep into their sockets, the Wendigo looked like a gaunt skeleton recently disinterred from the grave. What lips it had were tattered and bloody ... Unclean and suffering from suppuration of the flesh, the Wendigo gave off a strange and eerie odor of decay and decomposition, of death and corruption” - Basil H. Johnston Stay safe out there.
