This episode is part of my Folklore Friday series where I am sharing a folklore story every Friday in 2024. What Makes a Nykur Different than a Normal Icelandic Horse? Nykur is a water horse that is a gray color but it can shape shift into other things, living or dead. However, it's said that it can't take the shape of lambswool or peeled barley. In most stories, when the Nykur shows up it is normally around water. It lures people in to ride it. The Nykur specifically hangs out around rivers or lakes that are difficult to cross so that you do want to mount it. When you approach it, the Nykur acts super docile and calm. You first think it is a wild horse that is just out and about minding its own business. The Nykur is hoping that when you see that the river or lake is hard to cross that you jump on it to get a ride across. However, as soon as you mount the horse it immediately starts to gallop into the water. In the water, it turns on its side in the deep area, which catches you off guard. The Nykur uses its body weight to sink you deeper into the water and holds you down there until you drown. Definitely not a fun experience. How to Avoid Being a Victim of a Nykur One very obvious difference between a Nykur and a regular horse is that it has inverted hoofs. Yes, their hoofs are literally backwardIf you have already mounted the Nykur and it starts to gallop towards the water, saying its name “Nykur” will immediately make it throw you off of its back because it hates the sound of its name. It will then head into the water without you.One story of a child that was able to survive a Nykur is that a young girl was sleeping out in the Icelandic wilderness near some water. A Nykur saw her and started to drag her into the water. She woke up and realized what was happening. Luckily, she was able to say “Leave me alone, Nykur”. Once it heard its name, the creature released her and raced back into the water.Another way is to make the sign of a cross on the backside of the Nykur is another way to protect yourself. Random Fact of the Episode A Nykur can mate with another horse that is not one of them and create offspring. The offspring look like a regular horse. A big difference is said to be that when water is poured on that horse, it will lay on it side and let the water be poured all over it. Also, if it is going to a river or a lake, it will want to roll over on its side. Icelandic Word of the Episode Nykur can mean neck in Icelandic but in this context it is a water demon. We're kicking things off with our top 5 Scottish characters, actors, or themes that have made a significant impact on film. Following that, we'll delve into the gritty, beat-driven world of "Beats" (2019), and end on a lighter note with the whimsical adventures of "The Family Ness."Top 5 Scottish Characters, Actors, or Themes in Film:Sean Connery as James Bond - Arguably the most iconic Scottish actor, Connery's portrayal of James Bond brought a suave, charismatic presence that has become synonymous with the character. His Scottish heritage brought a distinct flair to Bond's otherwise English persona.Ewan McGregor as Renton in "Trainspotting" - McGregor's portrayal of the heroin-addicted Mark Renton is a landmark in Scottish cinema, capturing the dark humour and struggles of Edinburgh's underbelly. The Scottish Highlands in "Braveheart" (1995) - The breathtaking landscapes of the Scottish Highlands are as much a character in this film as Mel Gibson's William Wallace. The rugged beauty of Scotland serves as the backdrop for this epic tale of freedom and resistance.Billy Connolly in "Mrs. Brown" (1997) - Known as "The Big Yin," Connolly brings his quintessential Scottish humour and warmth to the role of John Brown, Queen Victoria's attendant, showcasing a deeply moving performance that resonates with authenticity. The Kelpie in "The Water Horse" (2007) - This mythical Scottish creature embodies the enchanting and mystical themes often associated with Scottish folklore, bringing to life the legend of the water kelpie in a family-friendly adventure.Main Feature - Beats (2019):"Beats" is a compelling dive into the '90s rave scene in Scotland, exploring the lives of two best friends who find solace and freedom in the underground music scene. The film is a pulsating journey that captures the spirit of rebellion and the cultural shift of the era, set against the backdrop of Scottish social dynamics. It offers a gritty, authentic look at youth culture, friendship, and the power of music.Kids TV - The Family Ness:Switching gears to a much lighter Scottish export, "The Family Ness" is an animated series that delights with its tales of the Loch Ness Monster and his quirky family. Each episode offers a humorous glimpse into the lives of these mythical creatures, blending Scottish lore with whimsical storytelling suitable for younger viewers.Whether you're in the mood for a nostalgic look at Scotland's cinematic heritage, a rhythmic journey through its contemporary culture, or a dive into mythical lochs with Nessie, today's episode is here to deliver. So pour yourself a wee dram, settle in, and join us on this Scottish cinematic adventure, where we explore everything from heroic battles to electronic beats.

Alright, so we've been covering a lot of depressing topics lately. Serial killers, true crime, and all that real life stuff can get to ya after a while, so today I thought we'd get back to our roots and take a look at some folklore, something nice and light hearted; so let's talk about the women and child luring shapeshifting water horse who used his magical voice to kill. Yup, super light and fun. So, the Nixie, which is also known by about a dozen other names (Nixy, Nix, Näcken, Nicor, Nokk, or Nokken, to name a few) is just as I mentioned above. He's an alluring figure in Scandinavian and German folklore, and much like the siren or mermaid, they would lure people to the water's edge via their voice or song in order to drown their victim. At least, that's how some stories go. Other's say that they would cut deals with people down on their luck in order to get children in exchange for fish, or other resources.  There's also stories involving trickery and wit, as well as ways to defeat this mischievous creature. As with many of these older tales, they come with morals and meanings, and much of it has been bastardized by the church and Christianity as a whole, which of course is a shame. Nevertheless, the stories of the Nixie are quite fascinating. There are worlds and creatures unknown to us, lurking in the deep waters of sea, river and lake. In this episode we explore one of the Good Folk who is known to dwell on both land, and in the dark, deep lakes of Ireland: The Water Horse, also known as the Lake Horse. Many of our Ancestors have witnessed a Water Horse lurking far out in the middle of a lake, often silently watching the activities of nearby Humans or stealthily stalking them. Others still have seen Water Horses graze peacefully on grass bordering the Lake. We share a tale of one such Water Horse who did not appreciate being disturbed by nearby fishermen and angrily chasing them before returning its their watery home. Some particularly courageous/reckless/desperate people have even captured a Water Horse and made use of its immense size and strength to help with manual labour tasks. Through true accounts we discover that this usually doesn’t end well… On this week’s episode we share several tales of the Water Horse, or Lake Horse, and ponder if they are dangerously territorial of their Lake home, or if they are simply caring guardians who take their duty most seriously. * Fancy buying me a coffee? Braydon and Belinda take a turn down a different path tonight, and giggle their way through a discussion about fairies! They are beings who can be found in many European cultures, and are often described as being nature spirits who play pranks upon humans. Fairies or Fae, usually belong to two "courts", the Seelie Court (or Summer Court) and the Unseelie Court (or Winter Court). These classifications discern a fairy's temperament, and how vicious they are with their pranks.Belinda starts the episode off with a very giggly explanation of the Donas De Fuera in Sicily, Italy. She discusses different encounters with the fairy spirits and "elves", and talks about the fairy witch trials which occurred when the Spanish Inquisition believed that the local fairy beliefs were evidence of a witches sabbath!Braydon goes on to chat about the Water Horse or Kelpie, an unseelie fae known to lure children to locations of water and drag them to their deaths. The creature is a renowned shapeshifter of Scotland and is said to inhabit any of the streams, rivers, lochs, ponds, and places with water in and around the nation. In fact, most bodies of water in Scotland have kelpie tales behind them. The kelpie can change from a wet horse to a gorgeous human, using its innocent appearance to bring people close before ultimately murdering them.If you wanted to follow us on social media, we can be found on: Facebook, and on Instagram You, Me, and a Poltergeist, Braydon, BelindaCHECK OUT ALL THE OTHER PODCAST ON TNC: THATSNOTCANON.COM See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

George seems to be the quintessential Canadian author; he worked as a Park Warden for Canada's national parks system and now he writes about the fictional mysteries that take place in those parks. George and I live on the same island off British Columbia's coast and it was great to chat with him about his career, his books, and his inspiration for more stories about the wild, sometimes forgotten places, in Canada's wilderness. In the introduction I mention that this is the final episode of It's a Mystery Podcast for a while. I have enjoyed myself enormously in the last two years interviewing nearly 70 authors from around the globe. When I had the idea for show in late 2015 it seemed like it would be a win for everyone: for you, the listeners, who would learn about new books and authors; for the authors themselves who would have an opportunity to shine a light on their books; and not least of all for me. My intention was to meet other authors and create a community of people I knew who are as passionate about writing as I am. I'm happy to say, that's what happened. I keep in touch with many of the authors I've interviewed over these last two years. It has been a joy getting to know a bit about all of them through our interview together. There is a wealth of creative talent and energy in the world, and I'm so grateful, as I'm sure you are, that these writers take the time, effort and energy to bring us stories that touch our lives. Thank you for being a part of this adventure for the past couple of years. It has been tremendous fun for me. I hope you enjoyed the interviews as much as I did. ;-) All the episodes from It's a Mystery Podcast will remain available from the podcast page, and also on iTunes and YouTube, so if you happen to find the show after we've gone off the air, never fear! You can still learn more about the authors I've interviewed, and about their books of course. Author Sean Cameron has coined the term 'Daft Noir' to describe his books. How great is that?! I love it. Sean is a UK transplant, now living in Los Angeles with his wife and wee daughter. As you'll hear in our interview, he grabs writing time whenever he can, given that parenting comes first - and with a toddler that can be complicated! He's got plans for several more books in the Rex and Eddie series. You'll hear him talk about the particular challenges of his hapless detectives, and why solving mysteries without a license is kind of like being Batman. ;-) This episode of It's a Mystery Podcast is sponsored by the brand new Town Called Horse short mystery, Water Horse. Transcription of Interview with Sean Cameron Alexandra: Hi mystery readers, I'm Alexandra Amor, this is "It's a Mystery" podcast and I'm here today with Sean Cameron. Hi Sean. Sean: Hello. Alexandra: How are you today? Sean: I'm good, how are you? Alexandra: I'm good, thanks. So let me let our listeners know a little bit about you. Sean Cameron is a writer who has previously worked as an online content producer, music journalist and a video game writer. He's the author of the British comedy series Rex and Eddie's Mysteries. The books follow Rex and Eddie, a pair of inept private detectives who bumble their way through cases in the drowsy town of Cloisterham. Filled with witty dialogue, silly hi-jinks and clever twists, this daft noir series is equal parts a British comedy and gripping thriller. Born and raised in Rochester, England, Sean lives in Los Angeles with his American wife and toddler. First off Sean, I love the phrase 'daft noir'. Did you make that up? Sean: Yes. Alexandra: Oh you did. It's awesome, it's incredible. Following on from that, when you thought about writing books, had you thought they would be in this tone, or did this surprise you? Sean: I've always written things in that sort of silly tone. And originally I just wanted to make something about two guys that wanted to be detectives but could never find a legitimate like exciting case and it would be about their frustrations. But then I realized that that wouldn't be as interesting, so to just throw them in the deep end instead and watch all that stuff happen made it like a solid noir and also very daft. Alexandra: Yes, fantastic. Tell us then a little bit about Rex and Eddie. Eddie is a security guard but it's Rex that has the idea to go into the private detective business. Sean: The first book starts they're both security guards in a rundown shopping mall. Eddie is quite satisfied just keeping the peace, not doing anything but Rex is always looking for the criminal element so he's always eyeballing the customers going around being like that, customer is doing this and that person...so he's always trying to get involved and that sort of leads to them getting fired and they're like in need of a new job and they basically...

Library Journal has named DM Quincy's mystery, Murder in Mayfair, one of the best mysteries of 2017! What an honour for me to have the Emmy Award-winning journalist and celebrated author on the show. You'll hear us chat about her love of traveling, the intriguing 'auctions' that went on in the Regency period that DM writes about, and her plans to travel to London in May 2018 to visit some of the places she's been writing about. DM Quincy's next book in this series, Murder in Bloomsbury, was released last week, so it is hot off the presses. This episode of It's a Mystery Podcast is sponsored by the brand new Town Called Horse short mystery, Water Horse. This is "It's a Mystery Podcast," and I'm here today with D.M. Quincy. Hi, Diana. Diana: How are you? Alexandra: Very well. How are you? Diana: I'm good. Thank you. Alexandra: Good. Well, let me give our listeners a little bit of an introduction to you. D.M. Quincy is an award-winning former television journalist who, after covering dozens of unsolved crimes, decided to conceive her own stories in which a brilliant amateur detective always gets the bad guy or girl. D.M. was bitten by the travel bug practically at birth since she's a U.S. Foreign Service brat, and, like Atlas, her main character, tries to visit far-flung places as often as she can. When she isn't hunched over her laptop researching ways for her villains to kill people, D.M. reads, spends time with her family, devours foreign language mystery series on Netflix, and plots her next travel adventure. And so the two books that we're going to talk about today are the Atlas Catesby books, and you just mentioned to me that the first one, Murder in Mayfair, was made a Library Journal best book of 2017, so congratulations on that. Diana: Thank you. I'm very excited, especially since it was my debut mystery, so that was very exciting. Alexandra: Exactly. There are two books in this series, and we're going to talk about them both. And the second one, Murder in Bloomsbury, will just be out for a couple of weeks when this podcast episode goes live, so we'll touch on that in a little bit. The books are set in the early 1800s, 1814 is when the first one starts. Tell us a little bit about Atlas and his background. Diana: Well, the setting is Regency, England. Atlas is the youngest son of a baron. It's a good family, but the father was awarded the title, so they're sort of marginally part of the peerage. And when he is about 11 or 12, a tragedy befalls the family that affects him greatly, and it's part of the reason after he finishes at the Cambridge he becomes a world traveler. So he's a very well-traveled gentleman, he speaks a few different languages, and he never really stays in one place for long.
