Today, Debbie talks with Rona Maynard, an author, writer, and former VIP, as she puts it. When she left Canada's leading magazine for women as editor-in-chief, she began looking for her next big project. Around this time, her husband suggested getting a dog. She resisted for several years, then relented. When she was 65, they adopted Casey, a two-year-old rescue mutt with an appealing personality. He left dog hairs everywhere and peed on her favorite chair the day they brought him home. But the result was an unexpected next new thing, a gradual transformation  of how she is approaching life, and a lovely new book, a memoir, titled Starter Dog.//////////Don't miss Behind The Scenes for every new episode in Debbie's [B]OLD AGE newsletter. Leave a comment on Substack and she will respond.//////////Of course, the book is not just about her dog. Rona is an extraordinary writer so it is  the woven story of her life as a young woman and a young wife, her ambitions, her relationship to food (and Casey's), getting older, and how - with Casey leading the way through her Toronto neighborhood - she began to soften and notice more. In the book she illuminates how taking Casey for daily walks ultimately made her a better person. She pulls the past and present together, and, engagingly, includes quotations from two of Debbie's favorite poets: Emily Dickinson and Gerard Manley Hopkins.Rona learns how to be kind (kindness was not stressed when she was growing up in a household full of ambition), how to befriend strangers and the homeless, how to appreciate the details of changing seasons and the outdoors (after working at a desk for so many years), how to be more patient, and how to live in the moment.Because of course while she was growing old - eight years pass - her dog was growing older. Casey is now 10, while Rona's in her mid-70s, and he's teaching her how to embrace old age. Just take it one walk, one squirrel, one bowl of dog food (two if you're lucky), and one day at a time.Mentioned in this episode or useful:Starter Dog: My Path to Joy, Belonging and Loving This World by Rona Maynard (ECW Press, 2023)My Mother's Daughter: a Memoir  by Rona Maynard (McClelland & Stewart, 2009)RonaMaynard.comRona's new Substack newsletter: Amazement SeekerPoet Emily DickinsonPoet Gerard Manley Hopkins Connect with Debbie:debbieweil.com[B]OLD AGE podcast[B]OLD AGE newsletter on SubstackEmail: thebolderpodcast@gmail.comDebbie and Sam's blog: Gap Year After SixtyLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/debbieweil Our Media Partners:CoGenerate (formerly Encore.org)MEA and with thanks to Chip ConleyNext For Me (former media partner and in memory of Jeff Tidwell) How to Support this podcast:Leave a review on Apple PodcastsSubscribe via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher or Spotify Credits:Host: Debbie WeilProducer: Far Out MediaMusic: Lakeside Path by Duck Lake

From Kitchen to Bowl: Why Home Cooking is Best for Your Older Dog & How to Do it Correctly

Home cooking for dogs is a growing trend among dog parents who want to ensure their older fur friends are getting the best possible nutrition. While commercial dog food can be convenient and cost-effective, it is often loaded with preservatives, additives, and fillers that may not be good for your dog's health in the long run. When a dog gets sick, most medical professionals will suggest a human-grade, whole-food diet. Well, why are we waiting until our dogs get sick to give them what they really need for their bodies to run at an optimum level?By preparing your dog's meals at home, you have complete control over what goes into their food bowl. One of the biggest benefits of home cooking for older dogs is improved nutrition. Commercial dog foods are often made with low-quality ingredients that do not provide the right balance of nutrients needed by dogs to thrive. By home cooking for your older dog, you can choose high-quality meats, vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats that are rich in essential vitamins and minerals. And don't forget, by making your older dog's meals at home, you offer them a great deal of variety in the food they eat, which they enjoy eating just as much as we do.Want to watch this podcast? If you are a dog parent, you want to make sure that your furry friend is healthy and happy. One way to achieve this is by feeding your dog real food alongside their kibble. Trust me; I get it. Sometimes it's hard to cook a decent meal for ourselves, let alone our dog, but cooking for your dog is not as hard as it seems. In fact, it can be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your pup.Firstly, cooking real food for your dog allows you to control what goes into their diet. Many commercial pet foods contain fillers and preservatives that can harm your dog's health in the long run. By incorporating fresh ingredients like lean meats, vegetables, and fruits into their meals, you are providing them with essential nutrients that promote overall well-being.Additionally, adding real food to your dog's diet can make mealtimes more enjoyable for them. For this episode, I put together an 8-page ebook on Kibble with a Kick: Adding Whole Foods to Your Older Dog's Diet and included three recipes I actually use here at the sanctuary. Saying goodbye to a beloved older dog is never easy, and it can be difficult to know when the time has come to make that heartbreaking decision. When a dog declines, pet parents must be able to determine whether or not it is time to help their fur friend across the rainbow bridge, but it's not always so "cut and dry" making that determination. In this video and #lifewitholddogs podcast, I cover three markers we use here at Woody's Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary to help decide when the time has come for us to say our final goodbyes. I heard a dog "behaviorist" say that it is perfectly normal to let an older dog correct a puppy. A correction would look like a growl, an air snap, a lip curl, etc to tell the puppy that he's crossed a boundary. She said that those behaviors are normal, but should you let your older dog correct your puppy? Could that cause aggression or reactivity? In this episode, you're going to learn what will happen if you let your older dog correct your new puppy and what the research says about this.   P.S. He had previous instability in his hind end and also lives in a household with tile floors. One morning he was not able to get up from sleeping all night. In a panic he was rushed to the emergency vet and they recommended due to his age and immobility he should be put down. The owner knew he wasn't ready and called Equalign.

3 Vet-Recommended Supplements For Senior Dogs by Dina Fantegrossi Although dietary supplements can be beneficial at any stage of life, many people don’t start thinking about giving them to their pets until they reach their senior years. This is the time when we are reminded of their mortality as we notice signs of arthritis and that telltale gray muzzle. With so many products on the market making different promises, it’s hard to know which ones are safe, let alone helpful for your senior pooch. Dr. Marty Becker has been a practicing veterinarian for more than 20 years. He has contributed to Good Morning America and The Dr. Oz Show, written 25 books, and sits on the Board of Directors for The Grey Muzzle Organization, a non-profit group devoted to helping senior dogs. When it comes to his aging canine patients, there are three major supplements he recommends. 1. Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids are best known for doing wonders for a dog’s skin and coat. While a shiny pooch is certainly an added bonus, EFA’s are thought to aid in critical brain function, as well as boost the immune system – two very important benefits for senior dogs! For those experiencing arthritis or the general aches and pains of aging, EFA’s are also known to have anti-inflammatory properties. Learn More or Shop EFA Supplements   2. Glucosamine with Chondroitin Sulfate Glucosamine and chondroitin are compounds found in healthy cartilage. Aging dogs experience joint pain when cartilage naturally breaks down and joint fluid is lost. The anti-inflammatory properties in glucosamine help to reduce that pain and aid in cartilage regeneration, while the water-retaining properties of chondroitin sulfate aid in joint lubrication. This type of supplement works well when paired with essential fatty acids. Learn More or Shop Joint Supplements 3. Probiotics Probiotics are designed to replace the healthy bacteria in the gut that can be killed off due to illness, stress, medications, and a variety of other causes. When the healthy bacteria levels drop too low, the bad bacteria in the gut take over, wreaking havoc on the digestive system, which contains up to 80% of a dog’s immune defenses. Probiotics keep the flora levels balanced, providing important benefits for an aging dog beyond digestive health. There is evidence that probiotics boost the immune system, strengthening your senior dog’s defenses against infections and auto-immune diseases. Learn More or Shop Probiotics Remember that frequent exams, a high quality diet, and maintaining a healthy weight are important for all dogs, but especially seniors! Consult with your vet to determine an overall wellness strategy and which supplements are right for your pooch. The goal is to keep your best friend healthy, comfortable, and most importantly, by your side as long as possible!

If you've ever wanted to shift your life, breathe new energy into things, feel better about the world, and gain a whole new perspective on life, even a 4 legged perspective then do we have the show for you. Today I'm interviewing Laura Coffey, writer, editor and producer for Today.com, the website of NBC's Today show, and author of one of my favorite books ever, My Old Dog. Now I'm biased, I've had older dogs travel with us on book tour, and run with us, until they were seventeen, so I love older dogs. I love younger puppies too, but there's so much wisdom, patience, and love in an older dog. And I'm not alone, celebrities such as George Clooney, and the humans being the upscale Nordstrom, love their old dogs too. As does Grammy nominated singer-song writer Neko Case. So I can't wait to talk with Laura about Einstein and George Clooney, about older dogs and what they have to offer and why tongues hanging out, just might be a good thing. Topics Include: Why Adopt an Older Dog? George Clooney and Einstein Instagram's Marnie Bretagne – last surviving 911 Ground-Zero dog Movement for senior dogs Why “seniors” actually make the best pets Perfect Ready-To-Go Pets Resource guide with senior-specific rescue groups Gray muzzle organization Benefits of Senior Dogs Mady and Maddie Dogs for seniors Dogs at nursing homes Sunny – 16 year old dog 3 Nuns, Death Row, and Remy Such a meaningful, rewarding adoption Woofabago, 25 dogs and travelling x-country Stinky – AKA Marny – Internet Famous Dog (2 million Instagram followers) What about kids and senior dogs Doing something out of kindness and compassion, letting that love into your home, you can't go wrong.   My older dog has slowed down recently. The vet says nothing is physically wrong, “just old age.” He has always enjoyed the daily routine, walks, food play with the other younger dogs. Now it’s like he has no enthusiasm for life, doesn’t want to walk, is grouchy with the other dogs, and sleeps a lot. My dog seems “checked out”…what can I do? How can aging be an enjoyable experience for your dog? Join Suzy as she offers suggestions and clearings for your older dog to have ease and joy.
