Justin Wren, CEO and Founder of Fight for the Forgotten, Keynote Speaker, Author, and Former MMA Heavyweight Fighter (UFC, Bellator), and…my soon to be husband!, joins us for a powerful conversation on how we can all create impact—both big and small. As a former MMA fighter turned humanitarian, Justin has spent over a decade serving the Batwa Pygmy people in Uganda and surrounding areas, building sustainable solutions for clean water, land, healthcare, and education. But impact isn't just about grand gestures—it's about showing up, listening, and making a difference in ways that truly last. In this episode, we explore what it means to create meaningful change, why impact starts with personal transformation, and how small actions—like a simple hug—can ripple into something bigger than we ever imagined. Key Takeaways: - Impact is a mindset, not just an action. Every moment is an opportunity to make a difference, whether through small daily acts of kindness or large-scale initiatives. - The difference between giving and empowering. Justin shares why sustainability matters in philanthropy and how Fight for the Forgotten focuses on long-term solutions rather than short-term handouts. - The paradox of contribution. True impact starts with deep listening and allowing communities to lead their own solutions. - The link between self-care and impact. How Justin's journey through recovery taught him that taking care of himself was the key to making a greater impact on others. - Managing expectations in service work. The importance of patience and letting go of control when it comes to making a difference. - The unexpected sources of support. Why the people who show up for your mission may not always be the ones you expect—and how to stay open to receiving help in surprising ways. Despite his success, he questioned the significance of his athletic accomplishments. Each victory brought the thought, “Is this it?” Battling injuries, he slid into painkiller addiction, battled depression, and attempted suicide. He was a champion on the outside but broken within. It wasn't until a series of circumstances led him to live among the Pygmy people—some of the most marginalized on earth—that he found true purpose: helping others. “My career was to fight against people, but my calling was to fight for people." Now, he helps others generate impact through their work and community. ‘The Big Pygmy' returned to the ring with purpose, founding Fight for the Forgotten (FFTF). FFTF has provided >52,000 indigenous people with access to clean drinking water, replanted thousands of trees, acquired >3,000 acres of land in the name of the tribe and helped 1,800 people out of slavery and into freedom. Current projects include housing, education, healthcare and sustainable livelihoods through community empowerment.

The Soulful Giant (ft. Justin Wren)Fighter-turned-lover Justin Wren on what it means to fight for a greater purposeOPENING QUOTE:“And so now, whenever I've gotten into a fight and the cage door locks, I'm looking this guy in the eyes and I know that I know, but I also believe that I know he knows, that I have stronger reasons than he does, so I can take him to deeper waters.”-Justin WrenGUEST BIO:Justin Wren knows what it's like to feel like the world is against you. Fueled by anger resulting from persistent bullying, Justin pursued wrestling in high school, where he became a 10x state champion, 5x all-American, and 2x national champion. This propelled his dream of becoming a UFC fighter into reality, becoming a champion and an elite athlete. But the pain from his childhood didn't dissipate, and Justin fell into a spiral of depression and addiction that led him on a path toward destruction. In trying to escape this spiral, Justin visited the rainforest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where he came across the Mbuti Pygmies, a group of people persecuted by neighboring tribes and forced into slavery. On one of his trips, he stayed for a year, living among them and sharing the culture of what he calls "the most bullied people on earth." His encounter with the pygmies left him wondering who was there to help them. And in that moment, Justin stepped out of the cage and founded the nonprofit organization Fight for the Forgotten. He's become a celebrated keynote speaker, ascending this new mountain with the same discipline and passion that got him to the top of professional sports. Links:WebsiteInstagramTwitterCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[4:36] - Discover Others to Discover YourselfSelflessness heals our own woundsAfter a long period of depression and hopelessness, how did Justin pull himself out of it? Not by working on himself — but by discovering the service of others. It was when he lost himself in the trials of the Mbuti people that he discovered his own purpose, passion, and personal joy. The lesson for us: if you feel lost, sometimes you're better off looking for the needs of others than looking for yourself.[12:58] - The Winner is the One with the Most Reasons to FightWhat Justin's mindset in the ring teaches us about living outside the ringMany people think that the stronger, better trained fighter is the one who wins. What Justin knows from being in the ring himself is that this isn't always the case. The person who wins is often the one who is less willing to lose. Or, to put it another way, it's the person with the deepest reason to win. When you discover a reason to fight that's deeper than the opponent — and in life, often the opponent isn't a someone but a something — then you'll discover a depth of fortitude you didn't know you had, and a will to win that will help you conquer anything.[16:03] - Change the Fight but Keep FightingWhat we can learn from the world's most loving fighterJustin describes how he went from fighting against people to fighting for people when he discovered his passion for serving the people of the Mbuti culture. But what's worth noting is that Justin didn't change his fighter's spirit. He didn't suddenly become a kumbaya, zen-loving individual who let the world wash over him in peace. Hell no. He kept his fighter's spirit, remained who he was, but applied everything that made him a great fighter to this new fight — the fight for humanity. We can all change our own personal fights without changing what makes us great fighters.[30:46] - Justin's Parting AdviceFor the new, nervous, and unsureJustin acknowledges that taking on big challenges often feels like trying to drain the ocean with an eyedropper. Does it even matter? Will anyon even notice? But Justin reminds us that every drop represents a human heart, a human life, some level of impact that may be small in the grand scale but enormous on the personal scale. Every single positive impact we make, whether it's on a massive keynote stage or in a room of ten people, can transform lives.RESOURCES:[2:10] About the Mbuti People[2:49] Fight for the ForgottenFollow Justin Wren:WebsiteInstagramTwitterFollow Josh Linkner:FacebookLinkedInInstagramTwitterYouTubeABOUT MIC DROP:Hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success. Justin Wren knows what it's like to feel like the world is against you.  Like many kids, Justin was bullied as a teenager, but he had a dream that kept him going. Fueled by the anger he felt toward his tormentors, Justin pursued wrestling in high school where he became 10 time State Champion, 5 time All American, and 2 time National Champion.  Justin trained hard and this propelled his dream of becoming a UFC fighter into reality.  But the pain from his childhood didn't dissipate, and Justin fell into a spiral of depression and addiction that led him on a path toward destruction.  After he was kicked out of his training community, his career was in shambles and he had nowhere else to go so Justin attended a men's retreat.  It was there he found his faith and purpose for living. As Justin began piecing his life back together, he took several international trips. This led him to the Ituri rain forest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where he came across the Mbuti Pygmies, a group of people persecuted by neighboring tribes and forced into slavery. On one of his trips he stayed for a year living among them and sharing the culture of what he calls "the most bullied people on earth." They gave him two names Efeosa which  means "the man who loves us" and Mbuti MangBO "The Big Pygmy." His encounter with the pygmies left him wondering who was there to help them, and in that moment Justin stepped out of the cage and into a Fight For The Forgotten. In 2015, after a five year hiatus from professional sports, Justin returned to his winning ways in MMA fighting, but now he is fighting for someone besides himself. Since returning to fighting, Justin is undefeated in three fights. His current record is 15-2.Justin is not only giving a voice to the pygmies through land, food and water  initiatives but, state-side, he is addressing the escalating problem of  bulling through an anti-bullying character development curriculum titled "Heroes in Waiting." He says, "Everyone can be a hero. To be a hero all that's required is to see a need and do what's right." This will be the best thing for the podcast as we are now entirely independent which is what we were being led towards! It's an exciting time!  Over the next few weeks I will be lining out some great new guests with powerful and profound stories to stay tuned for. This week we are airing an episode I did as a guest on my good friend Aaron Alexander's Align Podcast, when we both first came to Austin.  This is my story, and, I'm really excited to share it with you from the perspective and deep questions Aaron came up to ask me right on the spot. I had a realization during this talk that I've never had asked in 100+ therapy sessions from 3-4 incredible counselors, therapists, and psychiatrists. It has to do with sticky hands, but I'll let you listen to find out why that matters.  Aaron is a dear friend of mine and has 16 years of experience as a movement coach and has clients ranging from A-list celebrities, pro athletes, and everyone in between. We workout together, hike, paddle board, box, do Jiujitsu, and bike around Austin often. He has a new book out: The Align Method: A Modern Movement Guide for a Stronger Body, Sharper Mind, and Stress-Proof Life. Endorsements on the book are from Laird Hamilton, Gabby Reece, Aubrey Marcus, and more.  To help us continue to grow this podcast please leave a rating or review for the show. “Live to Love and Fight for People” – Justin WrenMy guest this episode is Justin “The Big Pygmy” Wren, a humanitarian, author, speaker, and a professional mixed martial arts fighter who has inspired millions.  He is the founder of “Fight for the Forgotten” a non-profit organization dedicated to defending the weak, loving the unloved, and empowering the voiceless around the world and in our own neighborhoods and schools. In this deep and highly personal episode Justin Wren shares how he used the martial arts to bravely overcome depression and addiction and how he has dedicated his life to fighting for other people.  My key takeaway, to quote Justin is that we can “defeat hate with love”.  We are all fighting a war within, and we need a support system and a higher purpose to overcome our obstacles and challenges.  We can then use the lessons we learned to “live to love and fight for people”.  I was honored to interview Justin a true example of the Martial Spirit.Show Notes  #4 : Justin Wren – Be resilient, Never Quit and Overcome all Obstacles00:00:27 – Justin Wren (@thebigpygmy) Introduction and Key Takeaway00:02:52 – Where does “Live to Love and Fight for People Come From?”00:05:11 – “I was a depressed drunk drug addict because I was only fighting for myself”. - Justin00:06:27 – 2 Things that will awaken the Martial Spirit = A Battle to Fight + An Adventure to Live00:08:35 – Rafael Lavato Jr(@lovatojrbjj) “You are a Martial Artist First and a Fighter Second.”00:10:21 – The Path of the Martial Artist is Warrior, Healer, Scholar, and Mystic00:12:00 – “Work on Yourself till you are of Service to the World” - @sifusingh00:14:35 – “No act of kindness, no matter how small, ever gets wasted.”- Aesop00:14:50 – “I was a missing person for 8 weeks during a relapse” – Justin Wren00:18:10 – Asked the Divine what do you want me to do with my Life?00:19:36 – Saw a Vision of a rainforest and a tribe in Africa, and came out with the word “Forgotten”00:23:28 – My encounter with a Mystic named Caleb who pointed me to the Pygmy People in the Congo Basin from my Vision00:29:50 – The traumatic path of depression and the way back out of it 00:30:50 – “We are programmed to succeed; we learn to fail.” – Sifu Singh00:34:30 – “We get so comfortable being comfortable that we don't want to trade our comfort for discomfort ever.” Jiu-Jitsu teaches us to be resilient. 00:37:48 – Chaos is Nature's Way and Peace is a Choice inside of Chaos – Sifu Singh00:41:31 – “Comparison is the thief of Joy” and that's the society we live in today00:44:28 – Getting the Name Efeosa = “The Man Who Loves Us”00:46:18 – Witnessing firsthand death due to water born diseases, due to lack of clean drinking water and mobilizing a yearlong effort to provide clean drinking water in Africa.00:47:00 – Malaria almost Killed Justin and he was almost in an irreversible coma.00:48:30 – “I learned from martial arts to follow my instinct and intuition.” – Justin Wren00:51:11 – The Warrior's Way is to dig deep and overcome on and off the mats.00:53:55 – How do you teach Resilience and Self Respect to People?00:55:20 – “A good leader knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way” – John Maxwell00:55:38 – Rayden's Story and Heroes in Waiting (Anti Bullying Program).01:06:00 – You have to work on yourself first before you can create a healing space for others.01:07:00 – This last year was the worst and best year of my life.01:10:30 – Depression is a silent killer.01:14:00 – “Rehab is not a punishment, it's a gift.” – Justin Wren01:15:15 – We need to be tough and vulnerable enough to allow people around us to help us.01:18:30 – Mr. Miyagi says it's not about winning the fight, it's about how we fight.01:19:11 – The Warriors Creed by Robert L. My guest today, Justin Wren, is no exception as he has found his life's working in serving the Pygmy People in Africa. To be a hero all that's required is to see a need and do what's right." The program aims to inspire students to take action at a moment of choice through empathy, kindness, compassion, courage and integrity.  https://fightfortheforgotten.org/

I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. Justin Wren was bullied relentlessly. He fought back to claim his place as a UFC Fighter, but the demons still haunted him. Self hatred, exclusion, self-sabotage. He made several attempts to end his life, but through a series of coincidences that can only be described as divinely orchestrated, his time was not done. As the founder of Fight For The Forgotten, he has dedicated much of his life to serving clean water to the Pygmy people in the Congo. And over this past year, he has become a pillar of the Fit For Service Fellowship. Justin Wren is a former UFC, mixed martial arts fighter from the Dallas, Texas. He has one of the most interesting stories you will ever hear. It's one of those stories that you could very easily see being turned into a movie in the near future. Justin Wren's story is about being bullied as a kid, climbing the ladder to become a UFC fighter, fighting depression and addiction, being classed as a missing person as he was moving through drug dens across Colorado and being kicked out is fighting gym. Justin was then able to turn his life around and began fighting for people instead of against them. Justin created the Fight For The Forgotten charity to free a Pigmies tribe in the Congo, a tribe which were being enslaved and even eaten by another tribe. This tribe were being forced to work for food and their masters had this belief that if they drank blood from the Pigmes' skulls then it would make them invincible going into battle and that bullets would fly through them. This interview looks at Justin's story, modern slavery, how his charity has freed tribes across the Congo, providing them with clean drinking water, land and taught them agriculture skills too. Today's episode also looks at Justin's ambitions plan to combat bullying in schools across America. Brought to you by 99 Percent Lifestyle magazine. Almost a decade ago the world got to know Justin Wren through his successful mixed martial arts career. Today he finds his greatest fulfillment through his foundation The Justin Wren Foundation dba Fight For The Forgotten. His purpose and passion is for the most bullied people group, the pygmies. Through his Fight For The Forgotten initiative, 1,500 members of a formerly enslaved people group in the DRC “Congo” are now free and flourishing on 3,000 acres of their own land with access to clean water and their own farms. Currently, he is focused on the Batwa pygmies in Uganda where he is working to bring hope to the Batwa’s desperate plight. These people are going extinct because of their deplorable living conditions and treatment by other countrymen. Through Fight For The Forgotten, he has been able to recently purchase farmland for them, farming tools and seed for crops along with providing water wells and building a latrine. A new deep solar pump water well has been dug at a school and orphanage where Batwa children now attend and some live. He admits there is much work to still be done but where there was once hopelessness, he is now seeing hope for the Batwa pygmies. Today, Justin “The Big Pygmy” Wren has expanded his Fight For the Forgotten non-profit to empower others who don’t have a voice. He regularly speaks to raise awareness for those affected by the water crisis, as well as those who are bullied, and those suffering from depression and addiction. He is developing a bully prevention/character development curriculum that is being implemented nation-wide in martial arts academies with a vision to grow it into schools. Justin is passionate about sharing with organizations, schools, academies and youth events in order to break the lifelong chains of bullying and encourage our youth to put kindness and compassion into action. Jeremy shares some incredible stories from his first half of the walk, from falling off a cliff, being chased by coyotes, sleeping on the side of the road and of course meeting amazing people. I was fortunate enough to spend sometime with these guys while Jeremy takes a well earned week off here in OKC. Jeremy is an amazing human being and will definitely change lives with his story in the future. Justin Wren (@TheBigPygmy) is an MMA juggernaut with the body of a Viking and the heart of a Pygmy. He's also the author of Fight for the Forgotten: How a Mixed Martial Artist Stopped Fighting for Himself and Started Fighting for Others. "Charity can be great. But opportunity is always better." -Justin Wren The Cheat Sheet: Slavery may have ended just over a hundred and fifty years ago in the United States, but Pygmy tribes in the Congo are among populations still enslaved today -- in fact, there are more slaves worldwide in 2017 than at any other time in history. With land they've inhabited for generations stolen from under them, Pygmies are considered animals by the landowners and forced into a self-perpetuating cycle of slavery. Now, MMA master Justin Wren fights for the rights of these forgotten people by helping them buy their own land, source their own clean water, and become self-sufficient. How does a clinically depressed, bullied kid become a successful mixed martial artist who raises money and awareness to free the oppressed? Does fighting for a cause since his return from retirement motivate or distract Justin when he's in the cage? And so much more...
