Scott Stapp has become one of the most recognizable voices in rock and dare I say a good friend. He and I will be hosting an event for Operation Song in Green Bay, WI on October 6th where we'll pair veterans up with songwriters, including Scott and tell their amazing stories through song.In the '90s and early 2000s, his band Creed became one of the biggest rock bands in the world, selling millions of albums and selling out packed stadiums around the world. Around 2005 the band went their separate ways with part of the band forming Alter Bridge and Scott starting a successful solo career. After one more album a few years later, there's been no news about Creed in over a decade. That has changed as they are back together for a cruise in 2024. On top of that Scott has a heavy new solo song out and a new solo album scheduled for next year.
Scott Stapp and Cutter will be hosting an event for Operation Song on October 6th at The Epic Event Center. More details at wapl.com. A much longer conversation including stuff about his new solo album, the Creed reunion and more will be available on the podcast Cutter's Rockcast on Sept. 8th.

STORIES OF SERVICE IN MUSIC AND PROSE – ARMY AND COAST GUARD Dale Throneberry hosts our guests: George Meldrum – Vietnam Infantryman, 1968-1972Chuck Jones – Nashville Songwriter and PerformerCapt. Steven J. Craig (ret) – Coast Guard Reserves, author I was playing drums and doing vocals in a blues band when I was drafted in May of 1968. That was before the lottery and I was surprised one day at the mailbox with the letter ordering me to report to the induction center. I have no pictures of me or James O'Banion, the “buddy” for which this song was inspired. There was a very low point in my life where I didn't want to think about the war and I got rid of everything; including every picture I had. After serving a little less than 4 years I briefly returned to performing music. However, that ended when I had to sell my drums to support a move to Salem, Oregon. 50 years later I started playing and performing again and currently perform locally doing a wide variety of music. “ALL PRESENT AND ACCOUNTED FOR” It was late November—one of the coldest periods to be on a ship near Alaska. The Coast Guard Cutter Jarvis had run aground during a severe storm and was taking on water. The engine room flooded, disabling the engines. Mountainous seas and gale force winds pounded the Jarvis, and to make matters worse, the ship was floating toward a rocky coastline that would surely destroy it and probably kill most, if not all, of the men. The ship's captain ordered an emergency message be sent to the Seventeenth Coast Guard District Office in Juneau requesting Coast Guard assistance. But there were no Coast Guard assets near enough to provide immediate help. At 7:04 p.m., for one of the few times in Coast Guard history, a MAYDAY call for help would come from a Coast Guard vessel.
What happens when veterans pair up with legendary Nashville songwriters? They produce songs more powerful than prescription drugs or therapy. We learned about Operation Song from Executive Director and Army combat veteran Mike Byer.Byer shares how he went from program participant to Executive Director, and shares a powerful story about how the songwriting process helped save his life. We go behind the music and examine the songs like “Good Co-Pilot.” Created by a WWII veteran who recalls landing a jet on a carrier during a Hurricane, it's a powerful testimony of his faith. And we unpack the story behind “Machine Gunner” which is an anthem about a Marine Corps veteran's memories of being on patrol in Afghanistan. Tonight begins my three part series on U.S. Paralympics Cycling participants who competed in Huntsville, Alabama, over the weekend. I wanted to hear the stories from these Paralympian warriors, so I did interview after interview to get the message across, there is life after limb loss and spinal cord issues/injuries! Tonight, I'll begin with Army veteran and Operation Rebound: CAF beneficiary JW Moreno. I was introduced to JW by my friend, Van Booth. As many of you know, Van walked coast to coast, from California to South Carolina, in 2019 to bring awareness to veteran PTS/PTSD suicide and to support Freedom Sings USA and Operation Song. In a continuation of his mission, Van suggested that I talk with JW and I did. That first conversation led us to this past Saturday as I interviewed JW and many others. Having just finished his amputation surgery today, I especially hope the encouraging and inspiring messages from these elite athletes will be an encouragement to my 15-year-old friend, Walker Bilyou of Walker's Journey, as he recovers. We wish you a speedy recovery, Walker! Any of the guys who joined me on the show will be happy to connect with you!
OVER 1,000 SONGS TO DATE The program started with weekly sessions at the VA Medical Center in Murfreesboro, TN under the supervision of a music therapist. Groups of as many as 8 veterans would tell stories about their military service and professional songwriters would transform them into song. The format gradually evolved from writing group songs to focusing on the individual veterans or service members and their experiences. Operation Song soon began sponsoring weekend retreats around the Southeast in Ft. Benning, GA, Chattanooga, TN, Little Rock, AR, Pensacola, FL, and as far away as New York City, NY. To date, Operation Song has written over 1,000 songs with veterans of WWII to those currently serving. There has never been, nor will there ever be, a charge to any veteran or family member for our services. It is our honor to serve those who have served. For More Information: www.OperationSong.org

Ep 272 | Aired 11/26/2021 Happy Turkey Week! For some, it's a lot of work to get the house ready, grocery shop and cook. But when the day arrives and everyone is together in a spirit of gratitude, if for nothing else, being born in the safety and security of the good ole USA makes it all seem worth it. Working hard in the spirit of gratitude is exactly what today's guests on Up in Your Business are all about. They're two of Nashville's most famous songwriters: Steve Dean and Don Goodman. You may not know their names, but you know their songs. Steve Dean has co-written 6 number one country hits, including "Watching You" for Rodney Atkins, "It Takes A Little Rain" for The Oak Ridge Boys, "Southern Star" for Alabama, "Round About Way" for George Strait, "Hearts Aren't Made To Break" for Lee Greenwood, "Walk On" for Reba McEntire, and more. Don Goodman has an extensive list of hits too, including, “Ol Red” sung by Blake Shelton. In this interview, the songwriters talk about their more recent selfless, hardworking and most fulfilling collaboration ever, simply called Operation Song. Be forewarned: you may need a tissue for this show. Based out of Nashville, this non-profit's mission is to help heal and empower veterans, active-duty military, and their families from service-related health and mental issues. Through a collaborative song writing session, the service men and women open up and share their deepest thoughts and experiences. Since 2012, the organization has written 100's of songs with veterans and their families, many you can hear at OperationSong.org.

High military aptitude test scores and high school curiosity earned Jonathan Kingham a place in the Navy that started him on the path toward a career as a singer-songwriter. On this episode of Borne the Battle, Kingham discusses how the Navy helped him enter the Seattle music scene, the evolution and future of the music industry, and how singers and songwriters make a living from music.A high school friend convinced Kingham to skip class and take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test, starting him on a search for the right branch of the military. He entered basic training on Christmas Eve and progressed to machinist and nuclear power schools before being assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln. As a trained pianist, Kingham had to find a more portable alternative to bring on the ship, so he bought himself the guitar that would eventually accompany him to his first performances at open mic nights in San Francisco. After San Francisco, the Navy took Kingham to Seattle, where he started performing regularly and landed his first paid gigs. He inquired about performing as an opening act for David Wilcox at a music club, The Backstage. His curiosity paid off, and he began to open for a mix of acts after his successful performance with Wilcox. In 2010, Toad the Wet Sprocketasked him to join as a touring member, leading to Kingham playing over 700 live shows with the band.Kingham is also a writer for Operation Song, a Nashville-based nonprofit that helps Veterans, soldiers and their families process and transform their experiences into music. Operation Song pairs Veterans with songwriters who help put their stories into words and music. In this episode, Kingham also discusses COVID's impact on the music industry, the benefits and downfalls of streaming music, and how musical success doesn't have to mean being a superstar.Borne the Battle Veteran of the Week:Navy Veteran Harvey Milk Mentioned in this episode: Borne the Battle #199: Army Veteran Josh Strickland, Lead Singer of the Bayou Bandits Borne the Battle #153: Perry Firoz – Air Force Veteran, CEO Epic Music LA, Analytical Scientist Why we stop discovering music around age 30 – Business Insider Operation Song Archives – VAntage Point Blogs Breathe by Clifton Pierce and Jonathan Kingham – Operation Song Mobius delivers first of 50 IBots to VA to determine how machines may help Veterans VA's Rapid Naloxone Initiative provides free Opioid Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution to Veteran patients
