2 Samuel 18:1-33: The LORD Upholds His King

As David prepares to lead his army into battle, his men recognize how valuable his one life is compared to theirs. His three commanders go out in his stead with specific instructions to be gentle with Absalom. The LORD delivers the victory to David over Absalom, but Joab disobediently takes matters into his own hands and kills Absalom. When news reaches David of the death of his son, he is overwhelmed by grief and sorrow.  Rev. Chris Hull, pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church and Student Center in Macomb, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 2 Samuel 18:1-33.  "A Kingdom Unlike All the Nations” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through 1-2 Samuel. This time in Israel's history has its highs and lows, but the LORD's faithfulness never wavers. He provides His Word to be proclaimed faithfully through prophets like Samuel and Nathan. Even as princes like Saul and David sit on an earthly throne, the LORD remains King over His people, even as He does now and forever through the Lord Jesus Christ. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Partnering with G5 Parking Solutions, the service began on March 14, with over 50 cars using it during the inaugural weekend. Valet drop-off is located near The Crossing, operating Fridays and Saturdays (3:30–11 p.m.) and Sundays (3:30–9 p.m.) for $5 per vehicle. Standard public parking remains available, and the city is making adjustments based on feedback to improve the program. Residents are encouraged to share their experiences to help refine the service. STORY 2: New York investigation leads to arrest of suspect in Suwanee murder Gwinnett County police have arrested 20-year-old Delano Hill of Suwanee in connection with a 2022 murder and as a person of interest in a New York City crime. Hill is accused of fatally stabbing Matthew Jones on Sept. 5, 2022, when Hill was 17. Charged with felony and malice murder and aggravated assault, Hill was linked to the NYC case after sharing undisclosed details about a homicide. Following a joint investigation with NYPD, Hill was arrested at his home on March 21 and is now in Gwinnett County Jail. STORY 3: Lawmakers decide to ban cellphones in public elementary and middle schools Starting next fall, Georgia elementary and middle school students will be banned from using personal cellphones during school hours under the “Distraction-Free Education Act,” which passed the General Assembly with bipartisan support. Schools must provide ways for parents to contact children via the principal’s office, with exemptions for medical or disability-related needs. The ban, effective fully by July 2026, aims to reduce classroom distractions and improve student well-being, echoing global concerns about technology’s impact on children. While some suggest extending the ban to high schools, the current focus is on younger students. Gov. Brian Kemp will decide whether to sign the bill. As the people of God once praised God for His deliverance from slavery in Egypt, so the people of God again praise Him for the greater exodus He gives through the promised Messiah. Both individually and together as the whole Church, Christians sing in thanksgiving that God has turned His anger to comfort for the sake of Jesus. He is our salvation, our strength, and our song. In Jesus, we drink the living water of God's Word and confess His salvation with joy to all the nations.  Rev. Chris Hull, pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church and Student Center in Macomb, IL, joins host Rev. In this episode, we sit down with Dr. René Cantú, who shares his inspiring journey from his birthplace in California to becoming a dedicated advocate for youth success in Nevada. After facing challenges in high school, including being told to drop out, he discovered his calling in education. Dr. Cantú began his career as a teacher, focusing on empowering students from diverse backgrounds. He later took on leadership roles in various educational initiatives and ultimately joined JAG (Jobs for America's Graduates) Nevada, where he works passionately to help students overcome barriers and achieve their goals.Dr. Cantú emphasizes the importance of resilience, encouraging young people to view mistakes as opportunities for growth. "You determine your own success and value," he advises. He believes in the power of following one's passions and finding ways to be of service rather than getting caught up in titles or salaries. He also highlights the interconnectedness of education, economic opportunity, and healthcare access. He shares two impactful stories from JAG participants: a young woman who overcame family separation to pursue a career in law and a student from a rural area who found support despite significant challenges. Dr. Cantú envisions creating pathways for young people to achieve careers that offer annual earnings of $80,000 to $100,000 without the burden of student loans. In his downtime, Dr. Cantú enjoys spending time with his family, engaging in outdoor activities, and exploring new places. He stresses the importance of self-care for maintaining balance and perspective, encouraging young people to prioritize their well-being and pursue their passions wholeheartedly.Additionally, Dr. Cantú encourages families and students to participate in the School Start Time Survey, which aims to improve high school students' academic performance and mental health. The Nevada Department of Education website provides more information and access to the survey.Lastly, JAG Nevada will hold its Statewide Initiation and Installation Ceremony on November 13, 2024, at Artemis Ham Hall at UNLV and the Student Center at TMCC in Reno. Through its acrostic structure, Psalm 119 shows us the comprehensiveness of the Word of God. In the first stanza, Psalm 1 is echoed as we learn that those who walk in the way of God's Word are blessed. God has given His precepts for us to treasure in our hearts. With eyes fixed on His commandments, we are not put to shame but instead praise Him according to the righteousness He has freely given us in Jesus. In Him, God does not forsake us.  Rev. Chris Hull, pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church and Student Center in Macomb, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 119:1-8.  "God's Word Is Our Great Heritage” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through Psalm 119. As this longest Psalm takes us through an acrostic journey through the Hebrew alphabet, our God teaches us to find joy, refuge, strength, and life in His Word, which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.

A Match Made In Heaving August 16th is our anniversary, and I'd like to take a moment to share the story of how Gracie and I met. This tale has it all: romance, humor, a bit of horror, and a lot of love. We had mutual friends at Belmont University who thought we should meet. I was a senior, though my transfer credits were all messed up, so I didn't graduate that year. Gracie had just returned to school after recovering from a severe car wreck. When they told me she had a wreck, I didn't have any frame of reference. I had never been in a relationship with someone who was hurt. They said, "She had a pretty bad wreck, and she's back now after a year of recovering." I thought, "Okay, how bad can it be?" I found out soon enough when she came down the walkway at the Student Center. She was a vocal performance major, and I studied composition and piano. This girl was beautiful, but she had a significant limp. She walked up to me, having heard about me, and wanted to test me out. I stood to greet her, and she said, "Can I put my feet up in your lap?" Odd question, right? But I said okay. Her feet swelled when she sat, so she had to prop them up. She later informed me that she plopped her feet in my lap to see how I'd handle it. The first of many times she pushed the envelope with me to see how I would cope. Click to read the rest at peterrosenberger.com

When King Ahasuerus elevates Haman above all other Persian officials, Mordecai refuses to bow before Haman, likely due to religious realities. In fury, Haman begins to plot to destroy not only Mordecai but the entire people of God to which Mordecai belongs. At this point, however, Haman's fury does not overwhelm him. He patiently casts lots to find just the right date for his evil plan. When the lot lands favorably, he goes before King Ahasuerus and deceptively convinces the King. With the King's signet ring in hand, Haman issues an edict that calls for the utter destruction of God's people on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month. Though the chapter ends with a cliffhanger, God continues to work behind the scenes for His people's good.  Rev. Chris Hull, pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church and Student Center in Macomb, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Esther 3:1-15.  "For Such a Time As This” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Esther. Although God is never explicitly named in the book of Esther, He remains the One who directs all the events of the book. Happenings that seem coincidence, chance, or luck are truly God at work. He puts Mordecai and Esther in the right places and moments to work through them to deliver His people.

This Lenten hymn is full of beautiful imagery that teaches us of Christ and His work for us. He is the living water given by God Himself to provide life and rest for us sinners. Though our sin has offended Him, yet God has willingly taken our pain upon Himself on the cross. When we consider Christ crucified, the Lord brings us to repentance over our sins, knowing that the grace He shows here grants us eternal peace. In this faith, the Lord sustains us until the end when we are with Him in glory forever. Rev. Chris Hull, pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church and Student Center in Macomb, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Lutheran Service Book #423, “Jesus, Refuge of the Weary.” Find this hymn at hymnary.org/hymn/LSB2006/423. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Lutheran Service Book 423 1 Jesus, refuge of the weary, Blest Redeemer, whom we love, Fountain in life's desert dreary, Savior from the world above: Often have Your eyes, offended, Gazed upon the sinner's fall; Yet upon the cross extended, You have borne the pain of all. 2 Do we pass that cross unheeding, Breathing no repentant vow, Though we see You wounded, bleeding, See Your thorn-encircled brow? Yet Your sinless death has brought us Life eternal, peace, and rest; Only what Your grace hath taught us Calms the sinner's deep distress. 3 Jesus, may our hearts be burning With more fervent love for You; May our eyes be ever turning To behold Your cross anew Till in glory, parted never From the blessed Savior's side, Graven in our hearts forever, Dwell the cross, the Crucified. As those reconciled to God and to each other, Christians support each other in their physical needs. St. Paul returns to this topic from his first letter to the Corinthians as he speaks about their participation in the offering for the saints in Jerusalem. Out of their joy and poverty, the saints in Macedonia have given generously according to their means. Now St. Paul calls the Corinthians to similar particpation in this act of grace, which flows from the grace that Jesus has shown by becoming poor so that we could share in His riches. As the Corinthians finish their participation in this offering, God will continue to supply His people with their daily bread. Rev. Chris Hull, pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church and Student Center in Macomb, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 2 Corinthians 8:1-15. “A Letter of Comfort” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the epistle of 2 Corinthians. St. Paul writes again to the Christians in Corinth to bring them the ongoing comfort of the Gospel in the midst of the attacks of false doctrine from so-called “super apostles.” He seeks to give confidence to the Corinthians—and to us—that the good news of Christ crucified and risen proclaimed by His called ministers will accomplish all that He intends.

In a space dominated by 'nones' and secular ideology, Catholic college students talk about how faith can thrive on campus(0:03) Fr. Ben Hass, pastor of St. Albert Student Parish at Michigan Technological University in the Upper Peninsula, describes the parish's tradition of building an ice chapel during the university's annual Winter Carnival in February and how it helps evangelize on the college campus.(4:18) The narrator points to statistics painting a grim picture for faith on college campuses across the nation. Fr. Hass shares his philosophy for bringing students into the parish. (6:52) Lena Sosen, a fifth-year senior at Grand Valley State University studying physical therapy, and Mason Kalinowski, a GVSU master's candidate studying biomedical sciences, talk about their upbringing. Both described a sense of religious apathy that pervaded their lives before heading off to college.(10:54) Both Lena and Mason describe how they became connected with the Catholic campus ministry at GVSU, and how they encountered faith-filled friendship at a critical juncture in their lives.(13:36) Anna Stankewitz, director of campus ministry at St. John Church and Student Center at Michigan State University, talks about the difficulties college students experience in living their faith authentically in the face of diverging values.(17:43) Lena, Anna and Mason describe how they became involved in campus ministry, what drew them, and why they decided to stay amidst other options on campus. Fr. Hass describes the social aspect of campus ministry at Michigan Tech.(22:17) Mason talks about his decision to ultimately become Catholic. His newfound faith — he'll be baptized this Easter — has had an impact on his family back home, too. (24:27) Anna, Lena and Mason give advice to current or prospective college students about living their faith authentically on campus. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - The US bishops on Tuesday opened registration to attend the first National Eucharistic Congress in 83 years. The National Eucharistic Congress will take place in Indianapolis July 17-21, 2024, and will be “a defining moment in our generation,” according to the website for the event. A five-day event of prayers, speakers, and liturgical celebrations, the congress will be the capstone of the bishops' three-year National Eucharistic Revival campaign, which began June 19, 2022. The congress is expected to have a festival-like atmosphere, similar to World Youth Day, and will likely draw a crowd of 80,000 faithful. The decision to undertake the initiative followed a 2019 Pew survey that revealed that only 31% of Catholics believe that the Body and Blood of Christ are truly, really, and substantially present in the Eucharist. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253654/bishops-open-registration-for-first-national-eucharistic-congress-in-83-years Michigan Catholics sought solace and support one day after three students were killed in a shooting on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. Two of the victims of Monday night's shooting had ties to Detroit-area Catholic parishes. The three were killed after a 43-year-old gunman opened fire on campus, injuring five others before apparently taking his own life. The gunman had no known ties to the university, according to the newspaper, and a motive for the attack was still unknown. A Mass was offered Tuesday night at St. John Church and Student Center on MSU's campus — about two blocks north of the February 13 incident — for the repose of the souls of those who died. In his homily, Father Peter Ludwig reminded the students gathered of God's love for them in the midst of tragedy. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253653/understand-that-he-still-loves-you-catholics-mourn-victims-of-michigan-state-shooting Today, the Church celebrates Saint Onesimus, a slave to Philemon, an influential man who had been converted by Saint Paul. Onesimus offended Philemon and fled in order to escape any sort of retribution. He then met Saint Paul while Paul was in a Roman prison. Shortly after, Onesimus was baptized. Later, as Saint Jerome and other fathers testify, he became an ardent preacher of the Gospel and succeeded Saint Timothy as bishop of Ephesus. His martyrdom occurred under Domitian in the year 90. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-onesimus-149

On "EWTN News Nightly" tonight: Former UN Ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley made an appeal to voters. She's seeking their support for the 2024 Presidential election. Meanwhile, before the new Congress got started, Democrats promised to push a pro-abortion agenda. That set up a tug-of-war with the new Republican-controlled House, which has passed several pro-life measures. 3 are dead, 5 are injured and a community is in grief after a shooting at Michigan State University. A number of vigils have been held both on campus and in the community to honor and remember the victims. Parochial Vicar for Saint John Church and Student Center, Fr. Michael Cassar, joins to share what it's like out there on campus and in the parish community and how people are holding up. And a conference starts later this week at the Vatican. It will examine ways to improve relations and communication among lay people, priests and bishops. EWTN Vatican Bureau Chief Andreas Thonhauser has more. Finally this evening, February is Black History Month. As civil rights groups across the nation observe the occasion others question if the actions of groups like Planned Parenthood tell a different story. Research fellow at the Heritage Foundation's Richard and Helen DeVos Center for Life, Religion and Family, Delano Squires, is calling out a double standard here.
