Our shared experiences in NLP, HNLP, and hypnosis training created a bond that has stood the test of time, and life's synchronicities recently brought us back together. Amy shares her inspiring journey from a traditional nursing career to her current role as an integrative therapy nurse at the VA Medical Center's Center for Integrative Health and Healing. Here, she blends Western medicine with holistic approaches, utilizing guided imagery, essential oils, auricular acupuncture, and mindfulness-based movement to address the mind, body, and spirit. A lifelong dancer, Amy talks about how movement and grace are central to her healing practice. She recalls moments of profound clarity and joy that emerged from physically aligning her body and soul through dance. These experiences inspired her to teach others how to reconnect with their bodies and embrace the spiritual and healing power of movement. Our conversation touches on the transformative power of presence and self-awareness. Amy emphasizes the importance of helping others find their spark, often through role modeling and guiding them to uncover limiting beliefs rooted in childhood. By addressing these emotional triggers, she has witnessed mental and physical transformations that lead to lighter, more authentic living. We also dive into Amy's advice for embracing life's unexpected turns and following inner guidance. Her story of surrendering to the rhythm of life—whether through intuitive movement or trusting the process—reminds us of the healing power of authenticity and joy. Key Takeaways: Embrace movement to align your body and soul, sparking joy and clarity. Reflect on inner programming to break free from limiting beliefs. Twila Reynolds and I talk about the inevitable moment coming to all of us: the day of our death. Twila Reynold is retired. She spent most of her professional years in the commercial insurance industry. But, later, she changed fields and worked in the administrative medical field, which has always interested her. When she began working at the VA Medical Center, she started as an Invasive Procedure Coordinator in the CT area. She later moved to Human Resources, where she handled all the worker compensation claims for that facility. Twila directed me to the book Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. A PBS documentary by the same name is available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQhI3Jb7vMg Atul Gawande is a surgeon who explores the inevitable process of aging and ultimately death, and takes a critical look at how the medical profession does not yet have a firm grip on how to handle these processes well. He explores the birth of nursing homes, independent and assisted living facilities, and the various roles modern hospice programs can play to support those nearing the end of their lives. Gawande shares several stories of those who were adeptly aided through the process of growing frail as well as those were not so lucky. Finally, Gawande shares what he has learned about how each of us should approach our mortality as well as that of those we love.

Then, a Travis County judge rules a controversial new state law is unconstitutional, but it's still taking effect. We learn more about the court fight over the so-called “Death Star” law. Plus: A local teachers' union is suing Houston ISD's appointed board of managers and superintendent over changes in teacher evaluations. Also this hour: We learn about a simultaneous heart and kidney transplant last month at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston -- the first of its kind for that institution. We also learn more about other organ transplants and how the process works for veterans in need. Then, when Jose Altuve notched his 2,000th hit this month, Astros fans cheered while other fans – again – labeled him a cheater over the 2017 sign-stealing scandal he reportedly didn't take part in. We discuss the challenge of shedding labels with Evan Drellich, senior writer for The Athletic, who, along with Ken Rosenthal, broke the story of Astros cheating scandal. And the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo recently took home the award for Fair/Rodeo of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Honors.

We have leaders of these institutions that have come from all different parts of the country to bring their careers here to focus on building this new ecosystem. It fosters a spirit of collaboration, which starts with Tavistock. "One that I'll mention that's unique is the Lake Nona Performance Center, and the Lake Nona Performance Center is a medically integrated fitness facility. Again, going back to my initial comment that this whole community was built and designed with people, optimizing health and human potential is really at the forefront of our focus. This performance center is a nexus of multiple things. There's clinical care delivery, there's fitness services, there's sports performance, there's mind/body practices, all under one roof." Research has shown that a key indicator of whether a physician works in a rural healthcare setting is the location of their residency. While these opportunities can be scarce in rural facilities, one physician is working to expand physician residency opportunities in rural areas. This week we're talking to Dr. Jack Michel, Strategic Advisor at RuralGME. “We want to expand these opportunities because it's such an incredible opportunity for people to be able to work on their skills, while not incurring huge debt and serving the public.” -Dr. Jack Michel Dr. Jack Michel is a physician specializing in Internal Medicine. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Miami in 1984, earning Summa Cum Laude. He received his Medical Doctor degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1989 and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1993. He served as Chief Medical Resident at the VA Medical Center for the University of Miami in 1994. His determination in having a successful impact on the community led him to acquire Larkin Community Hospital in 1998. In 2011, Larkin Community Hospital instituted its first Graduate Medical Education programs and has now grown to offer residencies in 30 different specialties and is the sixth largest Statutory Teaching Hospital in Florida (by the number of physicians in training) and the fourth largest by specialties in supply/demand deficit in Florida.
Today, I am blessed to have here with me Temple Stewart. She is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Personal Trainer, and Health Behavior Change Specialist. Temple played D1 soccer at the University of Tennessee Martin, which is where she received a degree in Dietetics. She completed an internship at the VA Medical Center in Bay Pines, FL. Temple currently works and lives in St. Petersburg, FL with her husband and their two poodles, Axel and Rowdie. Throughout college Temple developed a very unhealthy relationship with food and began using food rules or diets as punishment or for comfort. This behavior propelled Temple into learning all she could about food and how impacts our bodies, ultimately making her choose to become a Registered Dietitian. Throughout the process, Temple began to learn how to eat for health and how to develop a healthy relationship with food. Along the road, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), furthermore increasing her interest in treating the body with nutrition. In this episode, Temple talks about her journey to health and reversing the symptoms of both PCOS and Hashimotos. As a trained dietitian, Temple reveals why her education around food wasn't exactly the best information. Plus, Temple dives into her favorite health hacks, including the carnivore diet, intermittent fasting, carb cycling, and lab work. Tune in as we chat about how much protein you should be eating, how keto will help with fertility, and tips for asking your doctor about prescribing a CGM. [02:15] Temple Speaks About Her Journey To Health In college, Temple was losing hair, and she was gaining weight rapidly. Plus, she had no menstrual cycles. When she went to the doctor, they put her on birth control. After moving to Florida to become a dietitian, Temple's health worsened. Temple was doing exactly what they taught her in dietitian school: eat less, move more, more vegetables, and less fat. Eventually, Temple was diagnosed with both PCOS and Hashimotos. [06:10] How Temple Realized Her Dietitian Training Was Garbage Temple read The Obesity Code: https://www.amazon.com/The-Obesity-Code-Dr-Jason-Fung-audiobook/dp/B01MRKEO0U/benazadi-20 After reading The Obesity Code, she went down a rabbit hole with tons of other resources. She started helping patients in the hospital lower their carbs. Temple did a research study; every single person got off their medications and lost weight after lowering their carbs. [08:30] It Took Three Months For Temple To Reverse Her Hashimoto's Symptoms Hashimoto's thyroiditis is essentially an autoimmune disease. A lot of times, Hashimoto's and PCOS go hand-in-hand. Keto can be so helpful because it takes away a lot of the triggers of the immune system. Through nutrition, Temple was able to get rid of all her symptoms. [16:00] If You're Starting To Change Your Diet, Try Carnivore Everyone can benefit from a carnivore lifestyle. A lot of people are suffering from something and don't realize it until they go carnivore. If you want to get into ketosis quickly, try carnivore for a couple of days. People who are hitting plateaus can definitely benefit from a carnivore diet. [16:55] Insulin Resistance Is Actually Weight Loss Resistance What's causing the weight to stay on your body could be due to insulin. There are people who have tried every diet in the book. For the most part, people end up lowering calories. However, nothing will work when insulin resistance is up. Weight loss is typically a symptom; it usually comes after you heal your body. [18:45] Strategies For Overcoming A Keto Weight Loss Stall A lot of times, carb cycling can be effective. Complex carbs can help women depending on where they are in their cycle. Temple will also suggest switching up your intermittent fasting routine. The same thing goes for exercise – sometimes you are doing too much! Plus, don't forget to look at your sleep and your stress. Lastly, you may need to get labs and see what's going on with your hormones. [21:30] Why Temple Loves To Implement Intermittent Fasting Intermittent fasting is great for weight loss, aging, and protecting the brain. Many people do well fasting for 16-hours and having an 8-hour eating window. A 72 hour fast done quarterly can reset your immune system. Temple will encourage her clients to do what works for them. Fasting during breakfast is very popular. However, many women do better when they fast during dinner time. With intermittent fasting, the sky is the limit. [25:15] How Much Protein Temple Will Recommend For Her Clients Temple recommends .8 or .9 grams per lb of body weight for a woman. People who are snacking could stop if they meet their protein needs. Most women are undereating protein. The recommendations out there on protein are so low! [30:10] Why Protein Is So Satiating and Filling To The Human Body Protein is the building block for everything. It's really the only macronutrient that you cannot live without. Plus, protein is extremely satiating. It's really hard to eat an exorbitant amount of food when you're eating protein. [32:35] Why The Scale Is Setting You Up For Failure Women can fluctuate eight pounds just in terms of hormonal water weight gain when they cycle through their period. People get so attached to the scale because society values thinness. Instead, you should judge based on how you feel. Think about how your bowel movements are, what your skin feels like, how your hair is growing. The scale should be way down the list of importance when it comes to health. [37:00] Tips On Speaking With Your Doctor About Your Health First, Temple says you need to find the right doctor. Usually, a doctor can get you a CGM. Naturopaths and more holistic homeopathic physicians should be able to help you. Tell them you are interested in how food impacts your blood glucose levels. If a doctor shuts you down or isn't even willing to have the conversation with the insurance company, you might think about finding someone who is. [40:30] Should I Follow A Keto Diet If I'm Trying To Get Pregnant? PCOS is the most common cause of infertility. The most common cause of PCOS is absolutely insulin resistance. So, keto will improve your chances of getting pregnant. PCOS women are at a much higher risk for gestational diabetes. Going low carb will be safe if you're doing it in a nourishing way. You have to focus heavily on fatty meats. When you get pregnant, you really have to focus and make sure you're getting the right nutrients. AND MUCH MORE!
