I've Spent $50K On Self Development... WAS IT WORTH IT? Welcome back to "In The Moment"with Alex Manzi... and yes, as you've read in the title I have in fact spent about 50.000 pounds (about 60.000 in US dollars) in self development in the last 3 years, and in this episode I'm going to tell you all about it. There's a lot of wrong information and misconceptions out about coaches and self development... my experience has been truly life changing. I've started with one coach, the I aded others, and groups and mentors and retreats, to transform my financial situation, but then also my relationship goals, my mental wellbeing, my emotional status. 3 years later... I'm happy to say that I'm exactly where I hoped I would be, I'm living a dream. And I started my own coaching career. So, let me tell you how it works. 00:00 Intro 00:40 I've spent $50K on self development. 03:13 What if they told you... 04:42 Identifying goals. 06:15 What are you lacking? 07:33 Spectating VS Participating. 10:35 Where are you at in life? 11:28 Level of commitment. 13:45 When I started with my 1st coach... 15:14 I've become more... me. 17:07 before all this, I was hiding. 19:19 Conclusions. After years of rejections, Kameron's early book deals ran into problems when her publishers either folded or went bankrupt, Instead of quitting, she kept going. And going. In the decade since, Hurley has signed new deals, built a fanbase, and even won a Hugo.We sit down with her today to ask hard-hitting questions: Why don't we just quit? Why keep doing it? Why not 'just' self publish? And finally, was it all worth it?Nota bene: SPECIAL THANKS to Casmer Maliszewski for helping us clean up the audio on this episode! We experienced a lot of distortion and he kindly stepped in to help make it a more comfortable listen.###SHOW NOTES:·Long career that begin with a slew of rejections, followed by getting picked up by publishers who either went bankrupt, folded, or refused to pay. Kameron now claws a fierce living on the midlist, with a hard-earned fanbased and a chest of publishing war stories / wisdom.·Sunyi reads a bit from Kameron Hurley's essay, ON PERSISTENCE:· "I felt like I'd failed at everything. Life was a ruin. I found myself living in a spare bedroom at a friend's house, unemployed, deep in medical debt, staring at yet another novel three-quarters of the way finished. When I opened my laptop, the sticky note still stared back at me. Persistence, in all things, in writing, in life. I finished the book. I'd reached a point in my life where I didn't know how to do anything else but finish the fucking book."·The importance of being ‘easy to work with' in the industry·But also the importance of knowing your worth and fighting for your career·Choosing walk away from bad deals, unsupportive agents or editors, and bad film options (yes you can do all of this!)·Why did Kameron choose to champion transparency on her blog? Because the skewed publishing perspective that many writers put forward made her feel like a failure.·Examples of midlist writers who broke out to find big success·The importance of pen names·The importance of giving away arcs·WHY DON'T YOU JUST SELF PUBLISH? The dreaded question that we swim through repeatedly in conversations.·Why do we keep doing it? Why should we persevere?· Defining personal success, and finding joy in the process.·Sunyi's final question: WAS IT WORTH IT?
Doug Peacock is a legendary environmentalist, writer, filmmaker, and grizzly bear advocate. He's the co-founder of two conversation nonprofits– Round River Conservation Studies and Save the Yellowstone Grizzly. Doug was also the inspiration for the character George Washington Hayduke in his friend Edward Abbey's classic novel "The Monkey Wrench Gang." And to top it all off, he is the author of many classic books, including "Grizzly Years: In Search of the American Wilderness" and his most recent award-winning book "Was it Worth It? A Wilderness Warrior's Long Trail Home," published by Patagonia Books. - Doug was born and raised in Michigan, where he grew up obsessed with nature and the outdoors. As a young man, he was drafted into the Vietnam War, where he served as a Green Beret combat medic, an experience that placed him squarely in the middle of devastating violence toward his fellow soldiers, as well as civilian men, women, and children. In 1968, he returned home from Vietnam spiritually broken, mentally unwell, and physically debilitated with malaria. Not knowing where to turn, he headed deep into the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park by himself, where he formed an unlikely bond with the Yellowstone Grizzly Bear. Eventually, he recovered both physically and mentally and, to this day, he credits the grizzly with saving his life. He has spent the last half-century repaying his debt to the grizzly bear, aggressively fighting for their protection and recovery in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and beyond. - I met up with Doug in Aspen, Colorado, where he was in town for a reading of "Was it Worth It?" at Aspen's only bookstore, Explore Booksellers. Even though I could've talked with Doug for many hours, we managed to jam a lot of stories into this conversation. Some of the topics we discussed include: Why Doug does not carry a gun in grizzly country; why it is important for humans to love and protect a creature as powerful, even dangerous, as a grizzly; his friendships with Edward Abbey, Yvon Chouinard, Jim Harrison, and others, and how each of those high-voltage personalities helped to elevate the others; the death and secret burial of Edward Abbey; why climate changes is such a threat to grizzlies, the challenges and financial realities of a life dedicated to environmental advocacy; his greatest source of pride and greatest disappointment; what is giving him hope now; and Doug reads several passages from "Was It Worth It?'" - Even as he's getting on up there in age, today, at age 81, you can still feel the fire in Doug's spirit, and his passion for grizzlies is palpable. I was honored to have the opportunity to chat with Doug, and I loved his book "Was it Worth It?" I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. --- Doug Peacock "Was it Worth It? A Wilderness Warrior's Long Trail Home" "Grizzly Years: In Search of the American Wilderness" Save the Yellowstone Grizzly Round River Conservation Studies --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 4:10 - Discussing the picture on the front of Doug's book 6:25 - When Doug decided it wasn't fair to be in grizzly country with guns 8:40 - How Yellowstone became a part of Doug's life 10:55 - How grizzlies provided a much-needed community for Doug after his time at war 12:40 - How long it took for Doug to find peace in grizzly country after Vietnam 15:10 - Exploring Doug's balance between telling the good stories and being willing to fight for conservation 18:10 - Why specifically it is so important for humans to learn to love and protect a creature as powerful, even dangerous, as a grizzly 19:40 - How Doug's friends made him a better conservationist 21:40 - How Doug's friends balance their very strong personalities 22:40 - The importance of ceremony and how Doug handled the passing of his dear friend, Ed Abbey 28:40 - Whether or not parenthood changed Doug's outlook on risk and death 30:10 - Who or where Doug drew his motivation from 32:10 - How Doug managed his lifestyle 33:40 - What keeps Doug awake at night, as it pertains to grizzlies 36:40 - How Doug became interested in fighting climate change by way of grizzlies 39:30 - Where Doug would focus his energy if he were starting his career in conservation now 40:25 - Whether or not Doug is an optimist 43:40 - What work Doug is most proud of in his life, and where he thinks he may have fallen short 46:00 - Doug's friendship with Jim Harrison 47:10 - What gives Doug hope 48:40 - Doug's mandatory reading --- ABOUT MOUNTAIN & PRAIRIE: Mountain & Prairie - All Episodes Mountain & Prairie Shop Mountain & Prairie on Instagram Upcoming Events About Ed Roberson Support Mountain & Prairie Leave a Review on Apple Podcasts

During his service as a Green Beret medic in the Vietnam War. After the war, Doug suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and found solace in the wilderness, much like he did when he was a boy growing up in northern Michigan, exploring swamps and forests and remote places - After the war he devoted himself to observing and documenting grizzly bears in their natural habitat.Doug was a long time friend of the late Edward Abbey, who wrote THE MONKEY WRENCH GANG, where Peacock's essence and spirit and passion was immortalized in the character known as George Washington Hayduke. Sir Doug, is the author of several books, including "Grizzly Years: In Search of the American Wilderness”..... He has also worked as a consultant on several documentaries, including "Grizzly Country" and "In the Path of the Grizzly." Doug says bringing a gun into grizzly country will get you more into trouble than out of it…just look at the cover of his book, need I say more on that. Suffice it to say, grizzly bears saved his life…he has devoted his life to protecting theirs. Doug is a dog lover, a cat lover, father of two children - his amazing wife and life partner Andrea founded Elk River Books with cousin and friend Marc Beaudin….in Livingston, Montana - where, bye the way, my brother had previously lived, making complete the connection of how Jeff and Doug were pals. …you know, if Jeff had never left Livingston I'd be willing to bet a nickel he'd still be alive….Doug continues to work desperately towards protecting grizzly bears and their habitat through his writing, speaking engagements, and activism….and…talking to guys like me who read his book….and just had to tell everyone about itHere's my inspiring conversation with Doug Peacock about his book WAS IT WORTH IT: A WILDERNESS WARRIOR'S LONG TRAIL HOME published by Patagonia.yes that PatagoniaThank you for visiting. I Did It Again", una versión de la cantante pop Britney Spears.

Meet Doug Peacock, wilderness warrior, author and the inspiration for Edward Abbey's well-known character in The Monkeywrench Gang, George Washington Hayduke. Doug Peacock's new book, Was It Worth It: A Wilderness Warror's Long Trail Home, contemplates a life spent in nature as well as the partnerships in wilderness living and defense he had with Abbey and others in the environmental writing world. His 1996 book, Grizzly Years, which recounts his 20-year relationship with grizzly bears, is one of the great books about the misguided relationship people have with apex predator species. Was It Worth It is published by Patagonia; it's one of the few books that carries an environmental benefits summary — it is printed on recycled, chlorine-free paper, so it's a book you can feel good about buying.Doug reads from his latest book and talks about his 50+ years living near and studying Grizzly Bear around the Yellowstone National Park region. He reflects on how, if one doesn't try to control and exploit nature, it provides endless magical experience and the resources necessary for a responsible lifestyle. Doug also discusses the role of indigenous knowledge and the urgent need to respond to the collapse of biodiversity in the American West. This is the 2nd episode of Was It Worth it? and it was a real hootenanny with so much happening it's truly chaos at it's finest. This episode has everything you could want out a podcast and some more. Noah Hubler (Lil Aspy) throws down a freestyle rap, a conversation about Jimmy Buffet having a salt shaker of PCP, creative suicide ideas, hat cleaning act outs and conversations about vegetables. This episode is a wild ride and is evidence that sometimes the hangs with the comics are more fun than the mic itself. We had over 20 comics on this episode and it is a perfect view into the Denver comedy scene while the different comics answer the question, Was It Worth It? This week features Austin Langely, Quentin Johnson, Josh Donoghue, Jeff Stonic, Elliot Weber, Noah Hubler (Lil Aspy), Corey Cooley, Oshee Baugus, Daniel (random bartender at the bar), Michael Isaacs, Derek Walton, Johnny Beeks, Joshua Creedon, Justin Platz, Racheal Crow, and Raymond Ace. This podcast is a proud product of Slaughterhouse Studios and we would like to thank all of our guests for taking the time to answer, Was It Worth It?
Twenty years in Afghanistan And we all got a T-Shirt On the front it says: Did that just happen? And on the back it says: Was It Worth It? War is really unnecessary You never know who won Impossible to spread democracy With the barrel of a gun Soldiers killing each other Doesn't fix a thing The rich get richer waging war Soldiers die young and poor Twenty years in Afghanistan And all we got was a T-Shirt On the front it says: Was it worthwhile? And on the back it says: Peace begins with a smile Don't terrify children with images of hell Don't train them to fear, to hate, and to kill Don't teach them that females are inferior human beings Don't replace reality with fanatical beliefs Twenty years in Afghanistan And we got a lovely T-Shirt On the front it says: Was it worthwhile? And on the back it says: Peace begins with a smile Peace begins with a smile
Slaughterhouse Studios took the equipment to the basement of the Blush & Blu bar in Denver, during the comedy open mic night to do a podcast. The goal was to have comedians come on to the show directly after their performance and they get asked, "Was It Worth It?". This is a small view into the Denver comedy scene and it offers a unique set of perspectives from different local comics at one ordinary open mic on a random night in Denver. This episode features multiple local comedians including (but not limited to), Austin Langley, Jeff Stonic, Dylan Kantor, Michael Mann, CJ Gauvain, Jeff Nelson (at a distance), and Jason Fearn. Two audience members also join the show after stumbling downstairs and they just jump on the mics adding different personalities and perspectives. This podcast is completely different at the beginning compared to the end, and evolves constantly throughout the show.

Mandy abandons the show this week for something actually impactful. Meanwhile, Alex and Jim do the news. Topics include: Joe Rogan being an anti-vax moron, Joe Biden's big ole' American Families Plan proposal, his dem-brain means-tested attempt at tuition-free college, Bernie's College for All plan (which is, of course, a million times better), Mark Zuckerberg evicting native Hawaiians from his newly purchased beach, and India's coronavirus woes. Then we talk something many vets are thinking about: the War-That-Will-Not-End in Afghanistan. While Biden blows off the May 1st troop withdrawal date, and the Taliban prepares to attack coalition bases in reprisal, veterans of Afghanistan are back home trying to make sense of it all. Timothy Kudo captured this sentiment in a bottle with a NY Times opinion piece called "I Fought in Afghanistan. I Still Wonder, Was It Worth It?" Though he hasn't quite figured out yet that WAR IS A RACKET, he still works through his own Hurt Locker Moment, like we all have (or will).
