In this episode, we chat with Nick Bell, Global Sector Lead Mining, Minerals, and Metals at Worley, who are a global leader in engineering, project delivery, and consultancy for the energy, chemicals, and resources sector and helps customers achieve sustainable transformation, net-zero targets and innovative solutions. Nick has a background in metallurgy and engineering and has worked for some of the leading engineering consultancies during his career. We talk about some of the biggest challenges that the mining industry is facing, trust in our industry, the risks and opportunities in automation and long-term global trends that will shape the mining industry over the next decade. KEY TAKEAWAYS The mining industry faces significant challenges in meeting the growing demand for critical minerals, particularly due to a decline in major deposit discoveries and lengthy mine development timelines, which average around 16.9 years. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) requirements are becoming increasingly stringent, complicating the permitting process and increasing costs for miners. The industry must find ways to balance the need for more metals with these elevated ESG standards. Trust between mining companies, local communities, and regulators is crucial for project success. Establishing a common purpose and practicing the four legs of trust—reliability, openness, acceptance, and congruence—are essential for fostering collaboration. Automation presents significant opportunities for improving safety and productivity in mining operations. However, the industry must carefully manage the change associated with automation, as it can impact employment and community relationships. BEST MOMENTS "Projects move at the pace of trust... finding a common purpose against which everybody can align is very, very difficult." "We're simply not finding enough major deposits that... proved to be economically viable in today's environment." "If you can't find... a common purpose, it's our job as the industry to build that trust." "The elevated ESG requirements... mean that it lengthens the time and the costs of getting that metal to market." "Now is still a good time to be in mining compared to any time in my history." Brion looks at this week's opponent Illinois and the games played from 1899 through 1936. There have been 78 games played between the two teams, and Iowa is 37-39-2 all-time (49%). Two more wins by Iowa will tie the series. This matchup has been fairly competitive throughout the years. Illinois won 12 straight games from 1942 thru 1967, but it included a gap between 1952 to 1967 when they didn't play. From 1990-92, Iowa won 3 straight, then from 1993-95, Illinois won 3 straight, then Iowa won 3 straight from 1996-1998. Hayden Fry was 10-8 (56%), including the final 3 matchups (1996-1998). Kirk Ferentz is 13-4 (76%), winning 8 straight until last year's 6-9 loss in 2022. A few interesting stories to listen for. An Iowa coach killed a rabbit to try and end a curse, Iowa fans came to Iowa Field to hear a telegram update on a big road game at Champaign, one game was so popular that ticket prices jumped from $3 to $10, and there were some really bad lopsided games early in the series by both teams. Player profiles this week are Nick Bell, former NFL running back, who was a key part of the 1990 Rose Bowl, and had a monster game against Illinois in 1990, and Bret Bielema, former Iowa walk-on and team captain during that same time, who is now the head coach at Illinois. Visuals: https://getbehindthebillboard.com/episode-51-mark-tutssel-part-1/Mark Tutssel aka 'Tuts'Part 1To say we're excited about our latest guest on the podcast is somewhat of an understatement.Mark Tutssel aka 'Tuts', is one of the biggest names in the business. And when it comes to billboards and OOH, he has few rivals. His overall award record is staggering - 600 Cannes Lions, inc 10 Grand Prix, two D&AD Black Pencils, the first ever White Pencil, 25 D&AD Yellow Pencils, Grand Clios and many more - you name, he's won it.And he's won just about all these gongs at one agency, Leo Burnett. So in a way these two episodes (so much to cover we decided to make it a 2 parter) are as much about Leo Burnett as they are Mark Tutssel. In part one, Mark talks about his time in London, an incredible tenure alongside partner Nick Bell, creating iconic billboards for Mercedes-Benz, United Airlines, John West, Heinz and more. This body of work alone would be enough to fill several careers, but not for Tutssel. This is just part one of an amazing career spanning nearly 4 decades across all 4 corners of the globe, rewarded during many successful summers in the South of a France with all those Lions

After a gap of a few months, the magCulture Podcast returns as the UK loosens the lockdown. The episode opens with an overview of recent magazines – including Barter Baby, Creative Review, Here and British Vogue – and general observations from Jeremy Leslie, before moving on to Eye. Recorded during the special one-day Every Eye Ever event at the magCulture Shop, we eavesdrop on part of a conversation between co-owner/art director Simon Esterson and founding editor Rick Poynor (left and right above). Standing in front of the complete set of 100 issues displayed at the Shop, the two highlight some of the themes and common factors that make an Eye front cover, refering to work by previous art directors Stephen Coates and Nick Bell as well as Esterson. Rick Poynor then joins Jeremy Leslie for a conversation about the 1990 origins of Eye and its application of a critical rather than reporting style of design writing. Poynor still writes for Eye, has just written a biography of David King, and teaches at Reading University. The back issue is US graphic design magazine Émigré, a unique project both about and of the late eighties/early nineties graphics scene, at the beginning of the Apple Macintosh and DTP revolution. --------------------------- Huge thanks to our friends at Park Communications for their support of the magCulture Podcast.
