The Current Affairs Group, who meet at One Tree Books on the second Wednesday of the month, asked questions about the decline of local papers and local stories. Paul Ferguson, Head of Content and Chief Reporter for the group that includes the Petersfield Post, spoke of his concerns about the decline of local papers - he recalls the time when there was a High Street Office for the newspaper. There had been much change, some not so good - one reason Paul highlights that is reducing the numbers of people going into journalism is the harassment and abuse journalists get on social media. Paul - who was once a farm worker - is used to it, He tells Mike Waddington he remains optimistic and thinks a backlash may already be under way.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this explosive episode of The Final Furlong Podcast, Emmet Kennedy is joined by Lee McKenzie and Tony McCormick to dive into the controversy surrounding Alphonse Le Grande's disqualification after his Cesarewitch victory. With jockey Jamie Powell breaching whip rules by going four over the limit, the disqualification was inevitable, but it's the punters who backed the rightful winner, Manxman, who've been left high and dry. The panel doesn't hold back as they debate the ethics of the decision, question the British Horseracing Authority's (BHA) motives, and challenge the very rules that supposedly protect animal welfare but end up undermining the sport's integrity. Later, Grand National-winning jockey Daryl Jacob joins Emmet to talk about his decision to retire, his thrilling return to action after injury, and his views on the controversial Sauna Ban. Plus, Daryl shares his excitement about a young horse to watch and the race he's most eager to win this season. This week, Drewby and Yergy discuss the case of Timothy Ferguson of Michigan, a 13-year-old autistic boy who lived with his mother and stepfather, Shanda and Adam Vander Ark, as well as his older brother, Paul Ferguson. But when Adam suffered a serious of medical events that caused him to be placed into the care of his parents, Shanda and Paul turned Timothy into a literal prisoner in his own home... locking him in a closet, monitoring him with cameras and motion sensors, depriving him of both sleep and food (aside from hot sauce bread), and making him take ice baths until his 69 pound body could suffer no more. This case comes with a trigger alert to child abuse. Timothy Ferguson moved in with his biological mother Shanda Vander Ark in North Shores Michigan in 2021 after not being in her care since 2012. In the summer of 2022 Timothy was found dead of malnourishment and hypothermia in the basement of his home- Shanda and her adult son Paul Ferguson had to explain to investigators, the community, a panel of jurors and themselves how exactly they could not see the danger Timothy was in weighing only 69 pounds at the time of his death. In this compelling episode of "Hidden Killers," Tony Brueski, alongside psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott, delves into the deeply troubling case of Shanna Vander Ark and her son, Paul Ferguson. The duo explores the complex and heart-wrenching circumstances leading to the conviction of Vander Ark for torturing and playing a role in the death of another son, with Ferguson found guilty as her accomplice. Despite an initial deal to testify against his mother, Ferguson's sentence of 30 to 100 years in prison stirs a contentious debate on justice, mental health, and the impact of familial influence. The conversation navigates the murky waters of Ferguson's mental state, highlighting his autism diagnosis and how it might have influenced his behavior and vulnerability to manipulation by his mother. Scott points out the significant lack of empathy often associated with autism, questioning whether Ferguson's actions stemmed from psychopathy or a profound misunderstanding of social cues and authority figures. Brueski and Scott critically assess the judge's decision, pondering the efficacy and ethics of punitive imprisonment versus alternative containment for individuals like Ferguson. They discuss the potential for rehabilitation or the necessity of a more protective environment, such as a state hospital, considering Ferguson's specific needs and mental health challenges. The episode also touches upon the broader implications of empathy impairment and how it intersects with legal judgments, especially in cases involving nuanced psychological factors. The conversation speculates on Ferguson's capacity for empathy and the possibility of his emotional development being stunted by his tumultuous upbringing. "Hidden Killers" presents a nuanced view of a case that transcends the simple binaries of guilt and innocence, diving into the complexities of human psychology, the justice system's handling of mental health issues, and the tragic outcomes of familial dysfunction. Through this discussion, Brueski and Scott invite listeners to reflect on the delicate balance between accountability and understanding in the face of unimaginable tragedy. In this thought-provoking episode of "Hidden Killers," Tony Brueski takes a deep dive into a harrowing case of family dynamics gone terribly wrong, featuring psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott. The focus is on the shocking trial of Shanna Vander Ark, convicted of torturing and contributing to the death of her son, and her other son, Paul Ferguson, who played a significant role in these tragic events as his mother's accomplice. Despite Ferguson's agreement to testify against his mother, his sentence of 30 to 100 years in prison raises complex questions about justice, vulnerability, and the influence of mental health in legal outcomes. Shavaun Scott shares her initial shock and the nuanced perspective on the verdicts, especially concerning Paul Ferguson. Highlighted during the trial was Ferguson's diagnosis of autism, which Scott believes significantly impacted his ability to act independently of his mother's manipulative directives. This diagnosis suggests a lack of independent thought and a vulnerability to being controlled, factors that the court seemingly overlooked in its decision. The episode delves into the intricacies of the psychological evaluations presented during the trial, questioning the judge's dismissal of potential mitigating factors beyond psychosis and mood disorders. Scott argues that a more comprehensive consideration of Ferguson's mental health could have provided a clearer understanding of his actions and their motivations. Furthermore, Brueski and Scott explore the delicate balance between punishment and understanding, particularly for individuals with mental health diagnoses. They discuss the judge's rationale for Ferguson's sentencing, emphasizing the perceived lack of empathy and the potential risk he poses to society. This preventative approach by the court, aimed at protecting the public from further harm, is scrutinized in the context of Ferguson's mental condition and the extent of his influence by his mother. Through this episode, "Hidden Killers" invites listeners to reflect on the complexities of legal responsibility, mental health, and the deeply troubling effects of toxic family relationships. It prompts a broader discussion on how the justice system navigates cases involving individuals with mental health issues and the moral considerations at play when determining their fate. If he didn't inflict the abuse himself, does he share equal responsibility? Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins Tony Brueski to dissect this controversial ruling. Was he merely acting out his own abuse under his mother's sinister control? Sentencing Controversy: Was the judge's heavy-handed sentence justified? Psychological Horror: What do the revelations about Paul's alleged joy in inflicting pain tell us about the permanent scars of his manipulative upbringing? Paul Ferguson, the son of monstrous abuser Shanda Ark, received a crushing 30-100 year sentence for his role in the torture and death of his brother. Could Paul truly grasp the extent of his horrific actions while living in a warped reality created by his mother's abuse? Where does accountability begin for someone who never knew normal? Justice vs. Mercy: Does Paul's cooperation warrant a lighter sentence, or does the cruelty inflicted on his brother demand decades behind bars? Broken Beyond Repair? A Failed System: While Paul is undeniably guilty, does this sentence highlight a system ill-equipped to deal with deep psychological trauma and its consequences? In a courtroom filled with palpable tension and sorrow, Paul Ferguson, 20, faced sentencing on Monday for his role in the horrific torture inflicted upon his younger brother, Timothy Ferguson, under the direction of their mother, Shanda Vander Ark. The sentencing, delivered by Judge Matthew Kacel, marked the culmination of a harrowing legal saga that exposed the depths of human depravity and familial betrayal. Paul's involvement in Timothy's torture came to light in December when he pleaded guilty to first-degree child abuse, a charge stemming from the events that unfolded in their Norton Shores home back in July 2022. Responding to a distress call, authorities arrived at the family residence to discover Timothy's lifeless body, shockingly emaciated and weighing a mere 69 pounds, bearing the harrowing scars of prolonged abuse and neglect. During the trial, Paul recounted the grim details of Timothy's torment, revealing a chilling narrative of confinement, restraint, and relentless cruelty. Timothy, just 15 years old at the time of his death, was relegated to a squalid closet in the basement, where he endured unspeakable horrors at the hands of his own family. Prosecutors painted a damning portrait of Paul, portraying him as both a victim and a perpetrator, a pawn in his mother's twisted machinations, yet complicit in the torture inflicted upon his vulnerable sibling. They argued that Paul's upbringing, marred by abuse and neglect, rendered him susceptible to his mother's manipulation, creating a toxic environment where cruelty thrived unchecked. In a poignant plea for leniency, Paul's defense sought to cast him as a pawn in his mother's sinister game, a victim of circumstance ensnared in a cycle of violence and coercion. Yet, Judge Kacel remained unmoved, delivering a scathing rebuke of Paul's actions, condemning his lack of remorse and empathy as he handed down a sentence of 30 to 100 years behind bars. Addressing Paul directly, Judge Kacel admonished him for his callous disregard for his brother's suffering, denouncing his actions as tantamount to complicity in Timothy's tragic demise. He expressed grave concerns about Paul's potential danger to society and the apparent absence of genuine remorse, highlighting the profound betrayal of trust and familial bonds that defined Paul's actions. As Paul Ferguson begins his long incarceration, the scars of Timothy's ordeal serve as a haunting reminder of the enduring legacy of abuse and the devastating toll it exacts on its victims and their loved ones. In the pursuit of justice for Timothy, his memory serves as a beacon of hope for a future free from the shadows of cruelty and neglect. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
