C'est au cœur de la base navale de Toulon que nous avons rencontré le vice-amiral David Desfougères, commandant de la Force de l'aéronautique navale. Lors de cet échange, il nous a parlé avec beaucoup de fierté de ses 4 700 marins et de leur dévouement quotidien pour faire voler des hélicoptères, des avions ou encore des drones. Il est aussi revenu sur sa carrière de pilote de chasse avec au compteur 3 000 heures de vols cumulées sur 10 avions différents. Un entretien à ne pas manquer.Dans ce podcast, celui qui se revendique lui-même comme un « rat de carlingue » dans le jargon aéronautique du personnel navigant s'est notamment souvenu non sans émotion de son premier appontage « Cela correspond peu ou prou à poser les roues de son avion qui se présente à environ 250 km/h sur la taille d'un terrain de tennis. À quelques centimètres près, la zone des brins du porte-avions Charles de Gaulle, c'est la taille d'un terrain de tennis qui se déplace à environ 40 km/h ».Et c'est bien des années après ce moment marquant, à l'été 2025, qu'il a pris le commandement des marins du ciel. Une responsabilité qu'il qualifie « d'immense » et qui lui impose de relever plusieurs défis « Le premier, ce sont les ressources humaines. Je pense que comme dans toutes les unités ou toutes les forces des armées, la valeur d'une force ou d'une unité française, ne réside pas dans l'équipement que l'on met en œuvre mais dans les femmes et les hommes qui la composent. Il y a un vrai enjeu à maintenir ces savoir-faire. Aujourd'hui, j'ai des équipages sur Atlantique 2 - un avion qui chasse du sous-marin - qui sont probablement les meilleurs au monde. Ma préoccupation est de faire en sorte que dans 10, 15 ou  20 ans, ils soient toujours les meilleurs ou parmi les meilleurs au monde. Cela nécessite un travail permanent pour recruter et conserver des compétences alors même que le monde, les techniques, les tactiques et les aéronefs évoluent. Le deuxième défi consiste à préparer l'avenir, préparer les combats de demain sans répéter les schémas des combats d'hier. Entre les missions de protection des espaces maritimes français, la surveillance des activités russes dans l'Atlantique Nord et désormais un important déploiement au Proche et au Moyen-Orient, la quasi-totalité de la flotte française est à la mer. Une prouesse qui ne pourra que difficilement s'inscrire dans la durée. Il aura fallu au Charles de Gaulle moins de 8 jours pour basculer de la mer Baltique à la Méditerranée. Même son escorte, contrainte de refluer à Brest, a eu du mal à suivre le porte-avion à propulsion nucléaire. La flotte française se masse en Méditerranée orientale, il faut remonter à la guerre d'Afghanistan il y a 25 ans pour trouver la trace d'un déploiement naval aussi massif. « C'est historique effectivement, d'avoir une telle proportion de la flotte de combat française qui est à la mer, dont 80 % effectivement. Ça fait 19 sur 23 bateaux, les 23 principaux bateaux. Donc on va compter le porte-avions, les porte-hélicoptères, les frégates et les grands bâtiments de ravitaillement. C'est du jamais vu. Et sur ces 80 %, il y en a quasiment 60 %, c'est du jamais vu non plus, qui sont déployés entre la Méditerranée orientale et la région du Golfe », confirme Vincent Groizeleau du magazine de référence Mer et Marine. Sécuriser le Proche et le Moyen-Orient Une armada française pour répondre à l'urgence de la situation au Proche et au Moyen-Orient, c'est un ordre du président Macron délivré dans un discours tenu depuis Chypre ce lundi 8 mars et les missions sont nombreuses.  « rIl s'agit de protéger les ressortissants, protéger les bases militaires, protéger les pays avec lesquels on a des accords de défense, c'est-à les pays du Golfe, mais également Chypre avec lequel un accord a été signé assez récemment. Les protéger des attaques iraniennes, des attaques du Hezbollah et en même temps, se préparer à une éventuelle opération humanitaire et d'assistance éventuellement aux forces armées libanaise. Donc ça nécessite aussi des moyens, détaille Vincent Groizeleau. Et puis sécuriser le trafic maritime en mer Rouge et au nord de l'océan Indien, en attendant que l'évolution des combats dans la région du Golfe précisément, diminue suffisamment pour pouvoir entreprendre une réouverture du détroit d'Ormuz, qui n'est pas encore à l'ordre du jour. » On touche aux limites structurelles de la Marine Mais combien de temps la Marine nationale pourra-t-elle conserver autant de navires à la mer ? L'équipage d'une partie des frégates a déjà été doublé pour augmenter le nombre de jours à la mer mais avec un tel déploiement, indique Vincent Groizeleau, la Marine atteint ses limites et n'a plus de réserves pour assurer d'autres missions : « On a réussi à créer un modèle extrêmement optimisé. Personne en Europe, pas même les États-Unis, n'est capable de mettre 80 % de sa flotte en même temps dehors. Cet exploit repose sur une excellente maintenance et des doubles équipages pour augmenter sur un certain nombre de bateaux le nombre de jours à la mer. Mais la contrepartie, bien évidemment, c'est que comme ces bateaux sont beaucoup plus utilisés, ils s'usent. Ce sont des bateaux qui feront sans doute 20 à 25 ans et pas plus et il faudra les renouveler. La technique, elle peut suivre, on peut la réparer, la maintenir. Mais il y a un moment, l'humain aussi, a ses limites. Donc ça peut durer quelques mois parce que les marins sont habitués à faire des longs déploiements. Mais cela repose, très clairement, la question du format de la flotte. A-t-on suffisamment, notamment de frégates ? La réponse est clairement non. Donc effectivement, si on veut tenir des choses comme ça dans la durée, il faudra plus de bateaux », conclut le spécialiste. « Il est temps de passer dès que possible à 18 frégates de 1er rang peut-être même 21 », écrivait cette semaine le député Jean-Louis Thiériot, membre de la Commission défense de l'Assemblée nationale.
