In today's episode we look at the Japanese art form of kintsugi. In kintsugi the artist takes broken pottery or glass an joins them together with gold dusting over all of the "scars" or the seams where the pieces are glued together. We compare the steps in this process to the aspects we need to focus on as we deal with our own broken pieces from our past. and we find encouragement in the quote by Penny Reid "A break is something to remember, something of value, a way to make the oiece more beautiful, rather than something to disguise. They use gold, not invisible superglue because mistakes shouldn't be considered ugly." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/a2d--from-addict-to-disci/support

In this episode, we discuss Homecoming King by Penny Reid. Pro-football player Rex is always a boyfriend but never a husband, sending many of his exes into the arms of his teammates. Meanwhile, bartender and crafter Abby had a fairytale love story gone bad, convincing her to give up on love. When Abby's lifelong crush Rex walks into her bar, Abby is suddenly forced to reexamine her views on love. Rex has a proposal that will hopefully help both of them out and Abby agrees in spite of herself. As they spend more time with one another, will Rex take a chance and lower his grumpitudinous walls? Will Abby continue to assume her childhood crush is too good to be true? And what does too good to be true really mean, anyway? In this episode, we discuss Frost by C.N. Crawford. There is rock bottom, and then there is the layer of crap Ava finds herself in the morning after her worst birthday ever. Involuntarily single and not ready to mingle, she finds herself jobless as well. Cue the handsome Seelie King Torin to rush in, saying words that amount to, “I hate you, so, marry me and I'll give you a bunch of money." Nothing in life is easy, and neither is this staged courtship. Ava must compete against, even sword fight, magic-using princesses to give her a shot at winning Torin's hand. While Torin helps her survive the deadly challenges, undesired feelings develop. Can Torin keep his distance from Ava and save his people? Or will his love for her doom them all? Content warning: Cheating, but not between the couple. Ends on a cliffhanger, but we'll be doing the next book as our first book for the new year! Wow does this episode cover a lot! Iconic romance author Penny Reid opens this discussion by discussing her obsession with crafting before getting why and how she learned to make soap before getting into her deep dive into essential oils. We then bring up a classic Penny Reid concept- KNITTING! But wait… there's more! We also chat about the “Penny Reid-iverse” by getting into her journey as a self-published author, what it means to be a “traditional” published author, and how she created her own publishing imprint Smarty Pants Romance. We also get into her always interesting research process which most recently sent her down the rabbit hole of learning about the lives of strippers and strip club owners… I promise this all ties together and leads to her new book, Folk Around and Find Out! In this episode we're showcasing a live event that we held earlier this year on the KWL Facebook and YouTube pages. KWL Director Tara Cremin chatted with the wonderful indie author titan, Penny Reid. The universe that Penny has created, the "Pennyverse," is hugely popular with readers but also with writers. After several authors expressed interest in writing in her worlds, Penny opened it up and created the collaborative universe Smartypants Romance. Find more information about our podcast, including links to our guests' books here. If you're ready to start your publishing journey, visit kobo.com/writinglife.
We are vibrating with excitement to talk about the new Netflix's adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion starring Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis, and Henry Golding. For those of you jonesing for a little Bridgerton-era love to tide you over until season 3, look no further! Similar to Austen adaptations like Mansfield Park (1999) and Emma (2009), director Carrie Cracknell delivers an amuse bouche of cinematic romantic comedies to breathe life into an otherwise over-tread storyline. The ladies also discuss the announcement of Penny Reid truly having her own PCM and they decide their ‘must have' scenes from each book. Rae throws down the gauntlet for Women's Reproduction Health. If we reach a donation of $100, she will read all the books in the Winston Brothers series and write reviews for each. *With the exception of that Scarlett's book that sounds like she'd be Virginia Woolfe-ing herself. All proceeds will to go to the “Let's Make The Dreamy Creamy Summer Count” fund which aides Apiary for Practical Support, finding safe avenues for abortions and womens reproductive health. It's PENNY REID APPRECIATION MONTH! We kick off this holiest of months with a review of Penny's 2015 novel, The Hooker and the Hermit, co written by L.H. Cosway. International rugby star and anger management sufferer Ronan Fitzpatrick needs an image rebrand and social media guru Annie Cartel is just the person to do it. This would be a match made in publicity heaven if Annie wasn't a socially inept savant and Ronan a rapacious lothario with a newly instilled ‘love em and leave em' attitude. Also discussed: Rae's obsession with pickles, how we are living in a quagmire of despair, and our joint love of the tv show, Wings. In this episode, Steph & Ava talk about all the books they read in March (it was a...slow month, to say the least), and all that we're looking forward to reading in April. As a reminder, our March Readtastic Challenge Prompt was "Read a book with a green cover" and April's is "Read a book that incorporates the fake dating/relationship trope." We asked for recommendations and posted the suggestions in our Instagram (check out the @fandomtasticpod page and the highlights to view them), but you can also find our personal recommendations in this episode. And, as a reminder, we're currently enjoying (or, in Ava's case, enduring) our read-along of The Dragon's Bride by Katee Robert, so definitely tune in if #dragondick was on your 2022 Bingo card. Here are all the books we mentioned in S3E1: - The Master by Kresly Cole - Neon Gods & Wicked Beauty by Katee Robert - The Angels of Elysium series by Olivia Wildenstein - Hook, Line, and Sinker & Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey - Stuck With You & The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood - The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik - Leviathan Wakes by James SA Corey - In Deep by Hannah Haze - To Bleed a Crystal Bloom by Sarah A Parker - Taste & Ignite by Melanie Harlow - Rhythm, Chord, and Malykhin & The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata - Fortuna Sworn by KJ Sutton - The Savage and the Swan by Ella Fields - There With You by Samantha Young - Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas - The Hooker and the Hermit by Penny Reid and LH Cosway - Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall - Take A Hint, Dani Brown & The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert - The Deal & The Risk by Elle Kennedy - To Love Jason Thorne by Ella Maise - The Duchess Deal, A Week to be Wicked, & Any Duchess Will Do by Tessa Dare - The Worst Best Man & The Wedding Crasher by Mia Sosa - The Moonlighter by Sarina Bowen - The Bluff by Willa Nash - River Knight by Devney Perry - The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

In this episode of Doing Diversity in Writing, we—Bethany and Mariëlle—ask Erin Olds, CEO of Salt & Sage Books, all our questions about sensitivity reading. Who is Erin Olds? Erin Olds loves to travel, read, and drink boba tea! She currently lives in Seattle, where she homeschools her two excellent children. Erin is the CEO of and editor at Salt & Sage Books, an editing company dedicated to kindness. With a degree in English and French, Erin has worked with authors of all ages her whole adult life. Her poetry and short fiction have been published in various journals and magazines and won a variety of awards. She is a hybrid published author, with several indie books out under a pen name and her first traditionally published book (still a secret!) in progress. What we talked about What sensitivity reading is and who sensitivity readers are The kind of sensitivity reading requests Salt & Sage Books receives most often The emotional labor that goes into sensitivity reading Some alternative options for writers with limited budgets (Re)sources mentioned on the show The Salt & Sage Books website: https://www.saltandsagebooks.com The Salt & Sage Books Twitter account: https://twitter.com/saltandsagebook The Salt & Sage Books Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/saltandsagebooks The Salt & Sage Books Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/saltsagebooks The Salt & Sage Books Incomplete Guides: https://books2read.com/ap/8Vy9vl/Salt-Sage-Books Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao: https://xiranjayzhao.com Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas: https://www.aiden-thomas.com/cemetery-boys Ghost Squad by Claribel Ortega: https://www.claribelortega.com/ghostsquad The Timber Falls series by Fiona West: https://fionawest.net/contemporary-books Penny Reid's work and blog: https://pennyreid.ninja Have Geek, Will Travel by Rebecca Blevins: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/56610467-have-geek-will-travel Sachiko Burton of Salt & Sage Books: https://www.saltandsagebooks.com/profiles/sachiko-burton Bethany's Editing Your Novel's Structure: Tips, Tricks, and Checklists to Get You From Start to Finish: https://theartandscienceofwords.com/new-book-for-authors This week's episode page can be found here: https://representationmatters.art/2022/03/03/s2e7/ Subscribe to our newsletter here and get out Doing Diversity in Writing Toolkit, including our Calm the F*ck Down Checklist and Cultural Appropriation Checklist: https://landing.mailerlite.com/webforms/landing/r3p6g8 As always, we'd love for you to join the conversation by filling out our questionnaires. Should she be upset her kids are calling their stepmom (my former BFF who had an affair with her husband) mom? Penny Reid joins Xio, Avery & Roan to discuss plus they chat about what success means in the publishing industry and life.
There are three things you need to know about Janie Morris: She is incapable of engaging in a conversation without volunteering TMTI (Too Much Trivial Information), especially when she is unnerved, No one unnerves her more than Quinn Sullivan, and She doesn't know how to knit. After losing her boyfriend, apartment, and job in the same day, Janie Morris can't help wondering what new torment fate has in store. To her utter mortification, Quinn Sullivan- aka Sir McHotpants- witnesses it all then keeps turning up like a pair of shoes you lust after but can't afford. The last thing she expects is for Quinn - the focus of her slightly, albeit harmless, stalkerish tendencies - to make her an offer she can't refuse.
Romance Author, Heidi Hutchinson, is an open book (pun intended). Heidi has self-published 14 books and just recently came out with her 15th book, Key Change, as part Penny Reid's Smartypants Romance collaborative universe. I instantly fell in love (also pun intended) with Heidi's vibe and insight and I'm confident you will too. I felt like I was catching up with a friend over coffee and talking about real life stuff. We talked about everything from self love to being deserving of love, and I stepped away from our conversation feeling so confident, which is the point right? I can't wait for you to tune into this conversation and hope that this episode leaves you inspired and smiling from ear to ear. About Heidi: Heidi Hutchinson creates funny, clever, slow burn romance for readers looking for a guaranteed happily ever after. She hopes the stories she writes inspire her readers to take their hearts on one more adventure. She lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with her alarmingly handsome husband, their fearless child, and a rather large and spoiled dog. She is fueled by her unwavering and perfectly normal devotion to Dave Grohl and coffee. And a whole lotta love.
