This week we've got a 3 hour tank of a show for you, covering a lot of ground. We're discussing our current 'Best Of' list, which covers all forms of media and hopefully doesn't tread the same typical ground as other 'Best' lists. Some of our choices will be pretty easy to predict, but others may surprise you. I originally thought of splitting the show up into parts, but honestly there was no natural break in the flow of the discussion so I opted not to force it. Also, congratulations to our winners for the wallpaper contest! Both winning entries are linked below for you to download and enjoy!Wallpaper by Kevin from the PhillipinesDownload at 800 x 600Download at 1024 x 768Wallpaper by Andrew from AustraliaDownload at 800 x 600Download at 1024 x 768Download at 1280 x 1024Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave LondonClosing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week Lando and I are discussing the increasingly thin material that constitutes the truth in this day and age. With the advent of blogging, Wikipedia, and the amazingly malleable nature of all web content is it any wonder that the concept of fact is losing all meaning in our world? And the situation in the real world is getting just as dicey, with reporters dropping to their knees ready to abandon all honor before the beauty of the Mighty Ratings. Can there even exist words like 'fact' or 'truth' when things seem to be true one day and a hazy memory the next?Where The Wild Things Are clipOpening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave LondonClosing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week we're taking an alternate look at a topic that we touched on once before: the environment. As before, though, we're not debating the issue of whether we are damaging the environment but rather whether we even can damage this planet of ours. Do we as a species possess the power to alter the planet, and within that question can we do anything to improve it? The Matrix Resurrection: Should There Ever Be A 4th Matrix Movie? This week it was tough to categorize the show, since we covered a lot of various ground. In essence, though, we started with the idea that nothing is sacred anymore. The starting point for the show was the abominable progress on the American version of the anime classic Akira. Early details on the production have driven us both insane, as they show little regard or understanding of the source material. This started us wondering if there is any reverance for anything on this planet anymore. We're also going to post the wallpaper contest results so keep an eye out! Here's the page of 300 gifs I had a heart attack laughing at.Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave LondonClosing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week is a kind of half and half show, where we have a topic that we feel is important to discuss but likely not meaty enough to dominate the show. Rather than tank the idea, we're going have run our ramble a little longer than usual and then spend the remaining time on the mini-topic. Don't forget, this is the last week to get your wallpaper submissions in! Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week I'm on my own, so be forewarned. No real overall topic, just a near hour long mix of things bouncing around the empty cavern of my skull. Politics, the Terminator TV series and Godzilla....yes, these all belong together don't they? Egon said it best: "Short, but pointless." Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week we're doing a little viewer mail before delving into our topic: the nature of war within cyberspace. So much of our lives tied to the internet, and in this increasingly interconnected society what does conflict consist of when the battlefield is entirely virtual? Is there any such thing as war online, or is it more like a giant game of Battleship between faceless combatants? Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week we've got a blockbuster on our hands, an all out action bonanza that will blow you away! Nah, not really, but it was a fitting start to what we are covering: our list of truly notable directors. We go through a good group of old and new directors, some with huge bodies of work and others just starting out, but all quality. Of all the 'list' shows we've done, this one may generate some delicious dissent among our listeners. There are a few obvious choices, as there always are, but I think we popped a few surprises in the mix as well. As always, let us know what you think! Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week Lando and I are starting out talking about Scientology, which seems to be popping up in the news a lot lately. Is this really a religion, or simply a cult with a better bank account? After that, we're taking stock of the recent MacWorld Expo, where the big announcement was the slender MacBook Air. The two of us will examine this newest laptop addition to the Apple fleet, as well as the other big announcements of the show. Is the new crop of Cupertino specials worth raving about, or is there really very little to notice this time around? Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week we're taking a trip through CES after my recent visit in Las Vegas to the monstrous technology show. While it is a true behemoth that is in grave danger of being crushed beneath its own weight, it still produces a few gems among the sewage. Lando and I are taking a look through my notes on the show at some of things I thought were noteworthy, from huge TVs to the Blu-Ray bomb that was dropped. It's most definitely a demented circus that happens out in Vegas, and we're putting it under the microscope. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
Well, our first show of the year did not quite turn out as expected. First off, I'm in Las Vegas for CES and recorded on a rickety internet connection and my old headset, which sounds a bit like a Volvo gunning through a tunnel in first gear, so apologies for the quality on my end. Secondly, we never did make it to the topic we planned, again rambling on for over an hour. If not for the positive email about our ranting and the great flow of these aimless tirades, I'd be worried about us. Hope you all had a good New Years Eve, and enjoy the show! This is Part 2 of our discussion about whether to buy or build a new computer. In this part we're going over the process of building a computer for yourself. Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week Lando and I are taking a hard look at the sophomore run of one of our favorite shows, Heroes. While Season 1 was an almost ideal example of how to make a superhero show, Season 2 was...well, less than ideal. A minor spoiler warning here, we do discuss in vague detail some major plot points as we examine what went right and what went wrong in this second season. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week we're coming to you fresh from some of the slimier basements of the internet, where the subject matter gets into very shady territory. One example is the infamous '2Girls1Cup' video, which I originally planned to watch and post a reaction video to in time for this show. After our discussion and some thinking about it, I decided against it but it highlights some of the ideas within the show: what drives us to watch these videos, and what does that say about us? Is this obsession with 'shock video' something we need to be concerned about or is it a natural evolution of our culture? What becomes the ultimate 'shock video' when we keep trying to top the last one? Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
Some weeks we think we have a great topic, and at the last minute we're both sitting at the mic and the topic just feels dead as a fish, not interesting or fun. We used to stress about those moments, now we turn them into shows where we whine about whatever is on our minds! Enjoy! Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
Oh boy, ladies and gentlemen, you'd be well off getting a full hazard suit on this week because we're really going to be swimming in some muck. We're boldly charging into the dark and moldy basement of badly written comic book origins. We're hitting both DC and Marvel with our ire as both are equally guilty of allowing truly substandard creations to exist in their houses. Don't swallow any of the water from this swamp, kids, it's truly disgusting. This week we've got part two of our new reading lists, where we continue reviewing our new reading material. Let us know what you're reading these days, and Happy Thanksgiving! This week's selections: When Gravity Fails Philip K. Dick Collection Skeleton Crew University Of Nebraska Press The Zombie Survival Guide The Dangerous Book For Boys B.P.R.D. Night Watch 52 Very Short Introductions Guns, Germs, And Steel Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week brings part one of our updated bookshelves, sort of a sequel to the Eternal Bookshelf and Graphic Content shows. We're reviewing what we've been reading lately, and it's a pretty diverse list. This show ended up being around two and a half hours, so we're splitting it between this week and next. Have a great week! This week's selections: Blackwater DMZ Cory Doctorow On The Road Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
Happy Halloween! This week we meant to have a serious, deep topic...but then Thundercat porn derailed the whole train. Yep, it's that kinda show. Enjoy! Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week Lando and I are discussing the nightmare that faces the modern gamer, especially someone like Lando who is trying to get back into condoles after years without having one. Between hardware failures, a lack of software and the overall expense that is now necessitated by consoles doubling as computers the average person faces a tall order in selecting a platform. What happened? How did we go from the NES to this? We've got a few theories, as well as the usual criticism, so come on in and watch the fireworks. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
After our last two lighter shows, we're getting into some meatier material as we mull over the concept of ownership. What does it mean to own anything? Has the idea of possession changed as our society has evolved, or is it merely our perception of ownership that has changed? Like so many of our topics that cover the less tangible issues, this one becomes more complex the harder we look into it. In the end, is ownership even a viable concept? By the way, forgive the audio quality on my end, I had my mic positioned all wrong and never even noticed it. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
And here's the finisher to our massive fashion show, as twisted as it is. We've saved our big fight for the end, which gives you some insight into how we approach our movie superhero entertainment. As always, we steer the train off the tracks a few times but we eventually get to the station. Enjoy! Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
Man, we got a big show for you this week and next. What started as a possible follow-up to our iconic weaponry show ended up as a massive deep dive into the memorable clothing that colors so many forms of our popular entertainment. We knew this would be a long one, but I don't think either of us expected over 4 hours of time devoted to clothing. It's a fun ride though, and like so many of our 'lighter' shows we butt heads about some of the most inane things imaginable. Enjoy the first half of the show, and as always let us know what you think! Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
For the last week of my existence as a bachelor, we're examining an idea spawned by the ongoing struggle of how to approach the environment. Would the environment, and our world in general, benefit if we began to take a more 'mechanized view' of how things work? Aren't there advantages to approaching life as a series of systems, similar to the mechanics of a car or a computer? We break down why we think that the 'mechanized view' in all things might help us reach what is truly essential to anything in in life: balance. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week we're talking about what seems to be the latest trend in personal computing, the magical touchscreen. Microsoft has their table, the iPhone was the rage 2 months ago, and now the seemingly invulnerable iPod has gone button-free with the new iTouch. But is the touchscreen the future, or are we just seeing the latest in a long line of overhyped but underadopted technologies? Will touchscreens dominate our lives from now on, or are we looking at another product architecture that will fail to impress the masses? Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
Now landing midweek, we're delving into the extremely complex topic of human reaction. Where do the responses we actively demonstrate every day come from? What makes one man cheer the death penalty as justice served and another view it as the failure of law? Are these reactions taught or intrinsic? It's a road that branches in as many directions as people choose to walk, but we take a stab at figuring out some of the signposts along the way. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
Better late than never, this week we're going back a bit to look at the extremely incorrect assumptions we made about how our lives would turn out. The eccentric, moody artist in the expansive loft who hangs out in coffee houses being too cool all day and producing masterworks by twilight. The idea-packed writer cranking out brilliant novels by day before sipping fine wine at night and discussing the finer points of Steinbeck and Hemingway. Oh yes, we were quite deluded. But why wouldn't we be? Isn't this the ideal we are presented? What are the roots of our delusions of grandeur in these careers and others, and is there a way to avoid the trap they present? Come with us as we balance the myth and the truth of what we expect out of life...see if you hear anything that sounds familiar. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
Show 55 has Lando and I exploring the iconic weaponry found in popular entertainment. Mjolnir, Batman's utility belt, the dual .45s employed by the Shadow...it's all here and more as we wind our way through the various armaments that our heroes choose. Along the way we find that these weapons are both new and old, creative and derivative, mixtures of classic myth and fresh creativity. Fire up that Batmobile baby, we're goin' for a ride! Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week Lando and I are expanding on an idea that came from the preamble of show 53. We're taking that last segment of Lord Acton's famous quote and dissecting it, exploring the notion of great men almost always being evil men. Is evil a necessity of greatness, or is there something more subtle involved in the transition of an individual from meager to mighty? Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This is the second part of The Green Show. After our lengthy opening segment, this is where we get into the meat of the topic. First we talk about the Matrix trilogy, a set of movies I think was over-hyped at the time and got undersold as a result. Lando is not as impressed with the films as I am, so it makes for an interesting breakdown of what we though worked and didn't work. After that, it's on to the Hulk, one of the few comic characters we both think is fantastic. We go over what makes the Hulk one of those rare enduring creations that hasn't been ruined over time. Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week we decided to make Show 52 kind of a 'Season Finale' of sorts. We're not going away, but we've noticed that all of our more serious shows are facets of a larger question we've been chewing at all this time: are we doomed as a species? What are the odds of surviving long-term on this rock? Are we in good shape, or are we pulling planks off the hull to make competing fires on the same boat? Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
Show 51 is the second part of our show spotlighting the individuals that have had a big hand in our creative development. After a massive trip through the literary world, we're moving into the realm of artists and then beyond with music and even a small venture into a somewhat unusual spot. This show even contains something I never thought possible: a scenario in which The Dark Knight Strikes Again would be readable. Enjoy! Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
Show 50 ended up being so big we had to split the thing in two! This show finds us looking into the elements that went into our own creative evolution, as we highlight the individuals that contributed in making us what we are. I've also thrown in links to the individuals we covered: Green Lantern Batman William S. Burroughs Tracy Hickman & Margaret Weis Neal Stephenson William Gibson Edgar Rice Burroughs Michio Kaku Alan Moore Frank Miller Neil Gaiman Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
In the run up to big Show 50, we're taking a look at the words we use every day, and what's happening to them. What is the process that takes certain words and transforms their meanings, or bores them out entirely? Is this a positive and natural occurrence, or is it a byproduct of a society that is losing the worth of words? Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week Lando and I are going over a list of little things that just get on our nerves. No big issues, no world enders, just a simple list that carves out a piece of the annoyance pie we get served every day. Some bites are silly, some are bitter, but it's a good bet you'll agree on at least one of them. If nothing else though, remember this: don't trust little kids and Iron Man. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
For Show 47 Lando and I are taking a look at some of the things that we take as automatic components in our modern lives. Concepts like schooling, driving, and even religion get put under the spotlight as we try to figure out what human beings have adopted as "part of life" and whether any or all of those concepts are truly necessary. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week's show has a bit of a rocky start, and in all honesty it is a much more wandering discussion than usual but there were some very good points we each made and so we thought it was still worth putting out. The aim of the show was to discuss personal accountability, or maybe more specifically whether we are losing the value of that idea. Along the way, we even hit some of the big topics like racism and political correctness. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This is part 2 of our heated dream fight show. Second Round: Aquaman vs God Of Cities King Arthur vs Miyamoto Musashi Parallax vs Cosmic Thanos Doctor Strange vs John Constantine vs Hellboy Bullseye vs Ultimate Hawkeye Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
For Show 44 we delve into the surprisingly deep mire that is television these days. From content to culture, we examine where the boob tube is currently and where it may be heading. Are we on the brink of a new era, where we see the transformation of an iconic technology into something almost unrecognizable? Or will TV more or less always be the way it is, a creation that hit the nail so squarely on the head that it needs no evolution? More importantly, what value should this often vapid landscape hold for us as individuals? Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week we got a fun one for ya. We're taking a look at the portrayals of the damned and the divine in film this go-round, examining the cinematic visions of God, Satan, angels, and demons. We're covering all genres and genders as we rank what we think are the best examples of these mystical entities on the big screen. In the process, we uncover the amusing truth that the most powerful of all these celestial characters is also the one who sees the least screen time. Could this be another of the greatest tricks the Devil ever pulled? Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week Lando and I are discussing the disturbing increase in people who are losing their perspective on the things that matter. Nitpicking on party affiliation instead of working to fix the problems in Iraq, sitting and back and relaxing without holding governments accountable, choosing sensationalism rather than truly hard news...there are times where we seem to want someone else to just take care of the big issues, ignore them in favor of assigning blame, or we simply can't seem to focus on what they are. And what's with that silly Electoral College anyway? Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
OK guys, enough with the doom and gloom...at least this week! Lando and I are taking stock of the greatest games we've ever played, and we have quite different lists as we are very different gamers. From shooters to puzzlers, we cover a wide range of new and old games. Down-shift your brains a bit, this week it's all fun and games. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
For Show 39 we're taking a pretty heated look at the subject of parenthood. With the staggering numbers of children who end up abused, abandoned or neglected, should we be doing more to make sure people are fit as parents? Do we need a set of rules that govern who can and can't reproduce? We walk a fine and contentious line this week as we battle over where our responsibilities as a society and our freedoms as individuals lie. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week we're doing things slightly out of order. Instead of show 39, show 40 is going up because of the Virginia Tech shootings that happened here in the States. While this show topic is not limited to school shootings, it does cover some of our thoughts on these insane occurrences. Show 39 will go up next week, but for now Show 40 covers what Lando and I both see as an increasing trend in the US to shield ourselves from the very real dangers and stresses of everyday life. Does it really do us any good to pretend that bad things don't happen, that failure is insignificant, or that we can sue our way out of responsibility? Is our general reluctance to accept consequences for our actions just a smokescreen as we try to Jekyll our way out of seeing Hyde in the mirror? And what impact will this have on the future? Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This week Lando and I are turning over rocks in the rotten swamp of crappy movies, exposing some of what we feel are the worst movies out there. These films have it all: bad acting, terrible plots, and even one flick where the lighting is so bad you can't see anything (though that may be a blessing). Look at this show as a public service, an impassioned warning that watching any of these movies could result in severe mental trauma. Please, good people, don't be victims of this scourge. Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
This episode Lando and I are taking a look at the American Dream. The classic ideal still seems to draw many to the United States, but what is it exactly? Is it still something we should strive for, or has it become corrupted by our modern society? Worse yet, has it ever been the shining goal that we think of it as, or are we all chasing a goose egg that's not quite golden? Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
Well folks, the big interview is here, although it turned out to be far more than a simple interview. Benjamin Grundy, the mastermind behind the Mysterious Universe podcast, stopped in and the result is an absolutely dynamite show. This episode truly does cover it all, from the paranormal to Hong Kong action flicks. Ben was a fantastic guest, opinionated and outspoken. There are spooky stories, funny discussions and dynamic analysis about every aspect of our world and what lies beyond. Due to the length of the show, and the incredibly long process of editing it, this show will cover this week and next, cause I need a weekend off. In the meantime, hope you enjoy this show as much as we did! Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
After a week off for vacation, Lando and I are back with a lighter show, coming back to a world we love to visit: the movies. This week, we're taking a trip down the path less traveled, as we shed some light on 15 films we find to be left off the marquee. We're throwing in some personal favorites, and also some that we both agree on. Butter up the popcorn and take a load off, you're about to take a trip with us to the Cinema Oscuro. UPDATE: By request, here are the films in order of appearance: Ichi The Killer Electric Dragon 80,000v Alphaville Immortel Harley Davidson & The Marlboro Man The Big Blue Holy Smoke Delicatessen A Better Tomorrow 2 Pi The Fountain The Wages Of Fear The Princess & The Warrior Neo-Tokyo 3-Iron Opening Music: "Fire In The Sky" by Dave London Closing Music: "ET" by Peplab
