Welcome to another episode of AccessWorld, a podcast on digital inclusion and accessibility. In this month's episode, Aaron offers an overview of the ViewPoint app for navigating inaccessible content. They also break down their frustrations with accessible solutions for hotel elevators, questioning how reasonable existing accommodations are for travelers who have their patience tested whenever confronted with the wide range of solutions for touchscreen displays. Aaron dives into some of his recent blog posts around the major OS developer events, and Tony gives a shout out to AFB's Public Policy and Research Institute's new AI survey for users with and without disabilities. AccessWorld is a production of the American Foundation for the Blind. The podcast is an extension of AccessWorld magazine, a quarterly online publication published by AFB and now celebrating its 25th anniversary. To read the most recent issue, or to access for free our entire archive covering the past 25 years, visit www.afb.org/aw.  Visit www.afb.org/AISurvey to share your own experience on how you use AI. To check out the ViewPoint application, check out the developers website. And if you come across a hotel who figured out how to have a reasonable solution for elevator touch-screens, let us know. Email communications@afb.org with any other questions or comments and be sure to like and subscribe to the podcast.  Aaron Preece is editor-in-chief of AccessWorld, and Tony Stephens is the Assistant Vice President for communications at AFB. Michael Chad Hoeppner, CEO of GK Training and adjunct professor at Columbia Business School, brings a deeply practical lens to one of the most undervalued professional skills: spoken communication. With roots in professional acting and over two decades coaching executives, Hoeppner challenges conventional wisdom, arguing that most communication advice is either vague (“slow down”) or abstract (“just be confident”), and fails to address the real issue: communication is physical.   In this episode, he shares specific, kinesthetic methods that help clients speak more clearly under pressure. From using Lego blocks to build well-structured thoughts, to timing answers with a wiffle ball in political debate prep, Hoeppner demonstrates that improving communication is not about talent, it's about training behavior.   “Speaking is movement. We put air into action—that's what talking is. And you can learn to do it a lot, lot better.”   Key Insights: Delivery is Undervalued, but Often Drives Perception “Most coaching hyper-focuses on content and completely neglects delivery,” Hoeppner explains. Yet “delivery really, really determines much of the impression your audience makes about you.” Rambling, Fillers, and Anxiety Are Physical, Not Mental, Problems He critiques typical advice like “don't say um” as “thought suppression” and instead teaches clients to physically anchor themselves. One client stopped chronic blushing mid-session by simply learning to ground her feet. Tools Like Lego Blocks Make Structure Tangible “Pick up a Lego block, say your first idea, and put it down in silence. That pause gives your brain time to think,” Hoeppner shares. These physical anchors help clients avoid word salad and clarify complex thinking. Founders with Growth Mindsets Improve Fast “They're not held back by ego. They care deeply, they want to improve now, and that means they practice,” he says. In contrast, those with fixed mindsets (“I'm just a bad speaker”) often plateau. AI Will Make Delivery the Strategic Differentiator As language models democratize content, he argues, “delivery, how you say it, will matter more than ever.”   The episode closes with a powerful call to reframe communication not as a soft skill, but a trainable, high-leverage behavior, one that can transform not just boardrooms and keynotes, but daily leadership and presence.   Get Michael's new book here: https://dontsayum.com/ Learn more about Michael here: https://gktraining.com/michael-chad-hoeppner/   Here are some free gifts for you:   Overall Approach Used in Well-Managed Strategy Studies free download: www.firmsconsulting.com/OverallApproach   McKinsey & BCG winning resume free download: www.firmsconsulting.com/resumepdf   Enjoying this episode? #190 | What To Do Before and After Fundraising W/ Steve Walsh

The Ramblings

Episode Description:Steve Walsh didn't set out to become an angel investor. After 25 years as a Fortune 10 executive, helping build Cox Communications and Comcast's B2B divisions from zero to billions, he walked away from corporate life to help early-stage founders. What started as casual mentoring at demo days evolved into Hands-On Angel, where Steve has now invested in 64 companies with remarkable success. In this candid conversation with host Angelo Roberts, Steve shares the unvarnished truth about startup fundraising, why most founders approach it wrong, and what it really takes to build a successful company.Steve doesn't sugarcoat anything. His approach is refreshingly direct in an industry full of polite rejections and vague feedback. Whether you're a founder struggling to raise capital or an aspiring investor, this episode delivers actionable insights you won't hear elsewhere. The Default Alive Strategy Why reaching break-even changes everything about your fundraising position and gives you the optionality to raise on your terms, not out of desperation.Customer Acquisition vs. Investor Meetings Steve's mathematical approach to when founders should stop pitching investors and start selling to customers instead. What Real Commitment Looks Like Stories of founders who sold their houses, moved countries, and put everything on the line for their vision - and why this matters to investors. The Hands-On Difference How Steve's network-driven approach has helped 35 of his 64 investments reach Series A, with 8 exits ranging from $15M to $400M.Investment Philosophy Beyond Startups Steve's diversification strategy across wine, art, crypto, and real estate, plus his discipline of saving 30% of income regardless of salary level. The Marco Benitez story about selling a house and moving from Mexico City to Miami in two weeks demonstrates what "all-in" really means to successful founders.Steve's direct advice to a founder making $10K monthly but needing $18K to break even: stop talking to investors and go find 7-8 more customers instead. His honest assessment of different startup ecosystems and why 90% of his fundraising happens outside his home city of Boston. This episode will challenge how you think about fundraising timing, investor relationships, and what really matters for building a sustainable business. Steve's transparency about what investors actually look for could save you months of wasted effort.Learn from someone who's built multiple billion-dollar businesses and successfully transitioned that expertise into early-stage investing. Steve's framework for evaluating founders and his hands-on approach offer a blueprint for adding real value beyond capital."When it comes to sales, you control the timing, you control how many people you talk to, you control your pricing. When you talk to investors, you control none of that.""If you don't want my help, do not take my money. You're wasting my time. Don't take it because I will be your worst nightmare if you don't let me help you."Find Steve on LinkedIn as "The Hands-On Angel" or visit handsonangel.com. He's launching the Funding Accelerator course with 300 founders already on the waitlist. In a startup ecosystem often criticized for lack of transparency, Steve Walsh represents a different approach - one based on honest feedback, genuine commitment to founder success, and the understanding that building great companies requires more than just capital.Whether you're raising your first round or your fifth, this conversation will change how you approach investors and think about building a sustainable, scalable business.Subscribe to The Ramblings for more unfiltered conversations with the investors, founders, and industry leaders who are actually moving the needle in startup world. What Makes This Episode Essential ListeningKey Topics CoveredStandout MomentsFor FoundersFor InvestorsMemorable QuotesConnect with Steve WalshWhy This Episode Matters

Camino Inglés with Jannine and Sally

Clare is walking on the Camino Inglés today with Jannine Stoodley who is pushing her mother, Sally, in an off-road wheelchair. This entire series of Ramblings is themed around the Camino de Santiago, a network of pilgrimage trails that stretch across western Europe and converge on the world famous Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, in northern Spain. The Camino Inglés, or the English Way, is one of these trails. It has two starting points, either at Ferrol which is 119km, or A Coruña which is 75km from Santiago de Compostela. Because the distance required for a Compostela certificate is 100km, the Ferrol route is most popular. Jannine and Sally are taking the path from A Coruña, and hope to finish their adventure at the Cathedral on Sally's 85th birthday. Sally suffered a debilitating stroke in 2023, and had been admitted to a hospice for end of life care. But, incredibly, Sally rallied and recovered saying “I'm not ready to die yet” and was eventually able to return home. However she could no longer walk for long distances, which had always a passion, so Jannine found a robust wheelchair that Sally could be pushed in, and set off to walk the Camino. They have already completed the Reading to Southampton route in England, which is an officially recognised section of the Camino; it's a 68mile/109km path so when they complete the A Coruña, they will have surpassed the 100km needed to gain the coveted ‘Compostela' completion certificate.Clare met Jannine and Sally outside Restaurante Mar de Esteiro (What3Words: ///sweeter.jazz.lazing) which is around 11km out of Santiago de Compostela. They walked together on an often challenging route - especially when pushing a very heavy wheelchair across uneven terrain and up steep hills - for approx 10km. Jannine and Sally let us know that they successfully completed the final stretch of their walk the following day, reaching the Cathedral on Sally's birthday. They are keen to make the kind of off-road wheelchairs that Sally uses available to others through Adversity to Adventure, see the 'related links' section on the Ramblings webpage.Presenter: Clare Balding Producer: Karen Gregor

The Daily Blast: Trump's Odd Ramblings to Media Accidentally Wreck His Own Tariff Scam

After President Donald Trump threatened to single out Apple with tariffs, he offered remarks to reporters that undercut his case. First he seemed to say this would apply to many iPhone makers, but then reiterated he'd said this straight to Apple CEO Tim Cook, a potentially serious abuse of power. Then Trump said U.S.-manufactured jobs would not result in higher prices due to automation, but this concedes that the manufacturing work he hopes tariffs will create are low-level jobs that might get replaced. And then he all-but-admitted that his threat to get companies to “eat” the cost of his tariffs really could mean potentially higher prices for consumers. All these oddities taken together wreck the fraudulent arguments he's been making. We talked to Monica Potts, the new class politics reporter at The New Republic, who usefully synthesizes all of it to explain what's wrong with Trump-MAGA manufacturing nostalgia and why the Trump-GOP agenda comprehensively works against his stated goal of creating good American jobs.
