Nik is back today with a simple reminder: don't talk too much in an interview. Rambling can create confusion, invite contradictions, and sometimes signal a lack of confidence. By contrast, pilots who communicate with brevity and clarity tend to make stronger, more confident impressions and put more points on the table. The best way to avoid over-talking? Send us Fan MailThis week, we are joined by documentarians Frank Allen and Austin Rich as they take us on an incredible journey into the life and legacy of WWII bomber pilot Arthur Allen, the author of The Ramblings of a Bomber Pilot. We dive deep into Arthur Allen's wartime contributions, his experiences as a bomber pilot, and how his vivid memoir became the foundation for their latest documentary. Frank and Austin share the unexpected twists that arose during the making of The Ramblings of a Bomber Pilot, including how they uncovered stories that went beyond Arthur's memoir. One of the most emotional aspects they discuss is the tragic loss of the iconic B-17 bomber, Texas Raiders, which is featured in the documentary. We explore the historical significance of this aircraft, its role in WWII, and the devastating accident in 2022 that claimed both the plane and several lives. Tune in for a poignant conversation about preserving history, the challenges of documentary filmmaking, and the enduring stories of those who served in WWII.Support the show

Dr. Beckett and Rich Klein discuss a listener question about why some 1990 Topps football cards have a back disclaimer (and hash mark variations), speculating it relates to Pro Set's “official card of the NFL” status, NFL/NFLPA licensing turmoil, and possibly different print runs or printing locations. They also talk about card show logistics, including using hallway or side-room tables to create seating and to draw traffic into less-visited rooms by placing autograph guests or services there. The episode then shifts to the 1993 Topps R&N China/Porcelain cards, noting subtle variations, uncertainty about the checklist, and the difficulty of valuing rarely seen singles like an Orlando Merced card without reliable comps, leading into a broader discussion of “price above replacement,” dealer pricing, customer relationships, and the risks of selling items displayed at outdated prices. 00:41 1990 Topps Disclaimer Mystery 02:16 Pro Set Influence and 1992 Chaos 04:52 Pro Set Press and Overproduction 05:44 Show Tables and Floor Layout 07:13 1993 Porcelain Parallel Debate 09:51 Pricing Without Comps
Where do you stand on voice notes? In some places, sending a three minute - or even 20 minute(!) voice memo is totally normal and actually seen as much more personal than texting. It started back in 2013 on WhatsApp but now you can send voice messages on Instagram as well as some dating sites. Lots of people love them as you can send messages on the go and don't have to worry about typos. BUT is it selfish or indulgent to send them? Some people say they demand more time for the person receiving them and it's not always practical to listen to them, especially if you're at work. In this episode we unpack why voice messages are more popular in some countries and some of the voice message etiquette with BBC reporter Ashitha Nagesh. We also hear from some of our BBC friends around the world - why do you love or hate them? Dr. Beckett and Rich Klein discuss the intense three-week stretch during the McGwire–Sosa home run chase when Rich was inundated with reporters' calls, often having to explain the sports card hobby from scratch, and how it gave perspective on the daily strain public figures face; Rich recalls briefly escaping afterwards to Houston for a Cubs–Astrodome weekend. They pivot to Rich's music hobby—listening to radio airchecks and hosting monthly interactive “music games”—and relate it to collecting as a pursuit or “chase” rather than simply owning a collection, citing examples like Al Rosen and the appeal of finding specific cards such as a 1952 Topps ERR Johnny Sain. The episode also covers bootstrapping hobby businesses, comparing Jeremy's CIA Auctions garage-based growth to Beckett and others' gradual expansion, real estate and security needs, and the disruption of frequent moves. 00:41 McGwire Sosa Media Frenzy 02:26 Houston Trip and Hobbies 03:00 Music Collecting and Games 06:09 The Thrill of the Chase 07:47 Vintage Set Talk and Finds 10:06 Bootstrapping Auction Businesses 11:31 Beckett Growth and Space Lessons

Dr. Beckett and Rich Klein discuss how explicitly asking listeners for questions can boost Q&A episodes, referencing Greg Miller's approach. They touch on hobby retail growth, including Nick's second location and WAXXED opening three Houston-area stores. They answer a question about late-1940s/early-1950s Penny King Cracker Jack player charms, noting their appeal, cataloging challenges, and Beckett's push to be encyclopedic. The conversation shifts to whether Beckett should have cataloged unlicensed Broder-type sets, weighing their easy reprintability, legitimacy concerns, and today's growing gray areas, including Panini Instant-style items without numbering. Ticket buying has gotten so weird that a normal week can feel like a full-time job, and we're not letting it slide. We're Sarashi and Miss DJ Panic, and we're back in full rants-and-ramblings mode with the concert news that actually affects your wallet, your schedule, and your sanity.First up, we talk real life for a minute because it's all connected: food sensitivities, allergy season, and the little “experiments” we do just to feel normal. Then we get into K-pop tour shockwaves, starting with i-dle's North American tour cancellation and Cube Entertainment's explanation about reorganizing schedules around global activities and a July comeback. We dig into what that timing really implies for rehearsals, staging, promotions, and why a later tour might mean a better show for fans and artists. From there, the industry gets even bigger. Hybe, SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and YG Entertainment are reportedly moving toward a joint venture to create a global K-pop festival “Fanomenon,” with ambitions that openly aim past Coachella. We talk about what a mega K-pop festival in South Korea could mean for K-culture, global touring, and whether events like KCON get pushed aside. We also break down Ticketmaster and ticket resale reform: Ontario's face value resale cap, the fight over hidden fees and dynamic pricing, and the ongoing pressure from governments and fans to make ticketing fair. We wrap with more live-music buzz, including BTS tour kickoff energy, and why concerts are still our favorite form of therapy even when adulting is hard.Subscribe, share this with a friend who's tired of fees, and leave a review. In his newest book, The Long Run: Steve Prefontaine, Frank Shorter, Joan Benoit, Grete Waitz, and the Decade That Made the Marathon Cool, U.S. Track & Field Foundation board member, life-long runner, high school track coach, and bestselling author Martin Dugard takes us through the historical moments that sparked the running boom across America, including Frank Shorter's Olympic marathon win in 1972, Steve Prefontaine's career that ended too soon—and not to mention Greta Waitz and Joan Benoit, both with their own historic marathon wins that inspired women all over. Along the way, Dugard shares the history of the sport—from the myth that originated the modern marathon, to how it became 26.2 miles (and how the British Royal family had a hand in it), how the sport saved NYC from bankruptcy, and more! Martin's perspective and research into the race we love is awe inspiring and worth a read (or listen if you're an Audible fan like me).
