In this week's Beyond Sunday, Josh is joined by Paxton, Michael, and the legendary Paul Goodman—one of New Work's original worship culture builders and long-time elder. The team dives into an unforgettable round of "Bible or Breakup Ballad?"—a lyric guessing game that blurs the line between Song of Solomon and Shawn Mendes, complete with coffee wagers and surprise reveals. Their hilarious and heartfelt reflections remind us just how moving, misunderstood, and musically rich the Bible can be. Then, the focus shifts to Paxton's message from the “Before You Go” series, walking through the "Four C's" that build our confidence in Scripture's truth: Continuity, Content, Consistency, and Correctness. The conversation gets real about wrestling with doubt, bad theology we may have inherited, and the Bible's prophetic power. With insightful stats on prophecy fulfillment, personal stories of rediscovery, and Paul's encouragement about revival among the youth, this episode is both intellectually stirring and spiritually uplifting.

SUMMARY In this episode, Master Audrey Hussey discusses various aspects of martial arts, including the importance of community, learning from mistakes, and the balance between structure and fun in training. She emphasizes creating a welcoming environment for students and the significance of humor in martial arts. The conversation also touches on the nuances of correctness in martial arts training and the idea of layering knowledge rather than replacing it. She also focuses on the importance of lineage, teaching styles, and the balance between rank progression and personal growth. The conversation shifts to the significance of understanding techniques over mere memorization, the creation of a supportive training environment, and the implementation of innovative teaching methods to engage students. The conversation emphasizes a holistic approach to black belt standards and the flexibility of curriculum to cater to individual student needs. Master Hussey emphasizes the importance of empowerment, adaptation, and community. She discusses her unique experiences as a martial artist and instructor, particularly focusing on the challenges faced during the pandemic and her determination to open a school despite those obstacles. The conversation highlights the holistic approach to martial arts, the significance of personal growth, and the mission to empower others, especially women and children, through martial arts training. TAKEAWAYS Community is essential in martial arts. Learning from mistakes is a key part of growth. Humor can enhance the training experience. Creating a welcoming environment encourages participation. Structure in training should not stifle fun. Correctness in martial arts can be subjective. Layering knowledge allows for personal growth in martial arts. Students should feel comfortable approaching instructors. Martial arts can be a lifelong journey. The culture of martial arts should be inclusive and supportive. Lineage in martial arts can be important but should not be restrictive. Teaching should adapt to the maturity and skill level of students. Not all students will progress at the same rate; individual needs must be recognized. Rank should not be the sole focus; personal growth is essential. Promoting understanding of techniques is more valuable than rote memorization. Creating a supportive environment encourages students to thrive. Flexibility in curriculum allows for dynamic and engaging classes. A holistic approach to black belt standards acknowledges individual strengths and weaknesses. Innovative training techniques can enhance student engagement and learning. It's important to recognize that not every student will excel in every area. Your story as a martial artist is more than just facts. Empowerment is a key mission in martial arts. Adapting to challenges is crucial for success. Opening a school during a pandemic requires resilience. Martial arts can provide confidence and skills to children. Community support is vital for overcoming obstacles. Teaching martial arts is about more than just fighting. Patience is essential in the journey of growth. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn self-defense. Listening to intuition can lead to positive outcomes in teaching. This episode is sponsored by Kataaro. Recent video game trailers and releases are being trashed online and in comment sections. Naughty Dog's “Intergalactic” was criticized so heavily for their protagonist, a shaved head unidentifiable, the company turned off comments on the trailer. Games like “Concord” lost $400-million and were completely shut down. Countless gamers are furious how Ciri from “The Witcher” has had her look completely changed from female to, maybe female, while others are equally furious over “Dragon Age Veilgaurd” and its totally amateur production. Turns out its director is no surprise, an activist. “Assassin's Creed Shadows” was delayed until February 2025 due to criticism and a Japanese petition to cancel the game due to its cultural insensitivity to Japan. Why? Because Yasuke, a real black man who lived as a vassal to the warlord Oda Nobunaga, was turned into a full-fledged Samurai as the main protagonist of a game set in Japan. It doesn't help that half the staff have literally never made a game before. Defenders of the game say it must be racism, because Japanese didn't care that the other character, Naoe, a female Ninja, wasn't real - yeah, but she's also Japanese, not black. This is the same type of argument made by Corrine Busche of Dragon Age and by the outgoing CEO of Sony, Tony Vinciquerra, over Madame Webb: these things failed because people hated them, largely because of hate campaigns directed at minorities. Or, people hated them because they sucked. On the other hand, there were Onna-Bugeisha in Japan, noble female Samurai warriors. In some battles, up to a third of the warriors were female, though it was uncommon. So the same anger directed as AC-Shadows is not justified when we look at “Ghost of Tsushima 2,” which features of a female Japanese Samurai. Whatever your option is, however, the fact is AAA games are on average failing with massive budgets, often incompetent staff, and inflated promises. That's why games such as MiSide are totally dominating with virtually no budget or staff. -FREE ARCHIVE (w. ads)SUBSCRIPTION ARCHIVEX / TWITTER FACEBOOKWEBSITEPAYPALCashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tst-radio--5328407/support.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Originality vs. Correctness, published by alkjash on December 6, 2023 on LessWrong. I talk with Alkjash about valuing original thinking vs getting things right. We discuss a few main threads: What are the benefits of epistemic specialisation? What about generalism? How much of the action in an actual human mind is in tweaking your distribution over hypotheses and how much over making sure you're considering good hypotheses? If your hope is to slot into an epistemic process that figures out what's correct in part by you coming up with novel ideas, will processes that are out to get you make you waste your life? Intellectual generals vs supersoldiers Over time I've noticed that I care less and less about epistemic rationality - i.e. being correct - and more and more about being original. Of course the final goal is to produce thoughts that are original AND correct, but I find the originality condition more stringent and worth optimizing for. This might be a feature of working in mathematics where verifying correctness is cheap and reliable. Huh that feels like an interesting take. I don't have a super strong take on originality vs. correctness, but I do think I live my life with more of a "if you don't understand the big picture and your environment well, you'll get got, and also the most important things are 10000x more important than the median important thing, so you really need to be able to notice those opportunities, which requires an accurate map of how things work in-aggregate". Which like, isn't in direct conflict with what you are saying, though maybe is. I think I have two big sets of considerations that make me hesitant to optimize for originality over correctness (and also a bunch the other way around, but I'll argue for one side here first): The world itself is really heavy-tailed and having a good understanding of how most of the world works, while sacrificing deeper understanding of how a narrower slicer of the world works, seems worth it since behind every part of reality that you haven't considered, a crucial consideration might lurk that completely shifts what you want to be doing with your life The obvious example from an LW perspective is encountering the arguments for AI Risk vs. not and some related considerations around "living in the most important century". But also broader things like encountering the tools of proof and empirical science and learning how to program. The world is adversarial in the sense that if you are smart and competent, there are large numbers of people and institutions optimizing to get you to do things that are advantageous to them, ignoring your personal interests. Most smart people "get got" and end up orienting their lives around some random thing they don't even care about that much, because they've gotten their OODA loop captured by some social environment that makes it hard for them to understand what is going on or learn much about what they actually want to do with their lives. I think navigating an adversarial environment like this requires situational awareness and broad maps of the world, and prioritizing originality over correctness IMO makes one substantially more susceptible to a large set of attacks. Some quick gut reactions that I'll reflect/expand on: I think the world is not as heavy-tailed for most human utility functions as you claim. Revealed preferences suggest that saving the world is probably within an OOM as good (to me and most other people) as living ten years longer, or something like this. Same with the difference between $1m and $1b. One of the core heuristics I have is that your perspective (which is one that seems predominant on LW) is one of very low trust in "the intellectual community," leading to every individual doing all the computations from the ground up for themselves. 231206PC Leonard Bernstein Mensch Mahler am 06.12.2023Bradley Cooper und Lady Gaga – das Traumpaar im Film A Star is born. Sie wissen schon: In a Shallow .... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I feel that opera should be inclusive and tell the stories of ordinary people and not just European aristocracy and so I am sketching an opera in which the soprano is furious at the tenor and showing him the proper way to clean a bathroom — “Apri gli occhi, guarda dietro le cose” (Open your eyes, look behind things) — and to calm her he proclaims his love for her — “Farò di tutto per renderti felice” (I will do anything to make you happy) — and as he does his pantaloons start to slide and she points at them but in his passion he doesn't notice and the pants fall to the floor. I was wearing underwear when my pants fell but I leave it to the director to decide. The tenor's back is to the audience and personally I think opera could use a pair of what the Italians would call “glutei nudi.”Garrison KeillorJason Keillor, EngineerJason Keillor, Original Music This is a public episode. A new movie called ‘Essential Church' documents the resistance of some churches to state mandated lockdowns in 2020 and onward. Although the movie is very Christian, it has received very little attention, pro or anti, from any media, as opposed to movies like Sound of Freedom. Why is that? The main premise is whether or not Caesar or God has the ultimate authority of spiritual matters - referencing Romans 13. Mark 12:13-17 is also referenced in the film: “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's.” But this line refers more to Buddhist philosophy than some political statement that is applicable today. Christians need to learn that quoting the Bible will not win them battles against the state. The whole issue of power is a matter of precedent, legality, lawfulness, and proof. The Sound of Freedom also took Matthew 18:6 out of context to mean only ‘children' when the verse refers to all of God's children as “little ones” who should not be led astray by sin: “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” School districts in Utah, Colorado, and Florida are also being bombarded with demands from single individuals, usually working for political groups like Freedom from Religion, to ban the Bible if other books are also going to be banned. After all, the Bible is filled with violence and sex. But there is a major difference between the two. Books like Flamer is a graphic pornographic display of homosexual acts between young boys, Gender Queer is an explicit pornographic display of sex, and This Book is Gay literally teaches the ‘ins and outs of gay sex'. Of the 175 books banned in Florida, 87% were pornographic and in violation of statute 847.012, a law which makes it a felony penalty to distribute porn to children. The Bible, on the other hand, is probably not age appropriate for some little ones in the same way that adults take it as the harshest literal gospel. But if the Bible should be banned for vulgarity or sex, then what about Leviticus 20:13, which must be one of the verse of proof: “‘If a man also lie with mankind as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination.” Christians refer to this as the proof of God's anger with homosexuals, when in fact ‘mankind' could reference all people, and instead refer to promiscuous behavior rather than homosexuality. To advocate for banning the Bible on these grounds is also an advocacy for the destruction of a text based on its perverse homosexual content, which makes the whole thing very ironic. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5328407/advertisement

Six years ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Jordan Peterson. This was when he'd just entered the public sphere with a video criticizing political correctness. Now, at the time the interview didn't get much traction as it was before I had “Crossroads” and before Mr. Peterson became as well known as he is now. But those ideas that we discussed—the underlying problems of postmodernism, how it relates to the communist agenda, the destruction of higher education, and the subversion of the values of the West—have only become more relevant now as society becomes more divided. So I've decided to re-release the interview, I hope you all enjoy! ⭕️

It is a legitimate comedic device of walking out and addressing what people's first thought about you might be. It clears the elephant in the room, and it also shows them that you know what you're doing.” Hear Geoff Norcott discuss the comedy on both sides of the political aisle and provide his thoughts on what makes politicians truly likeable.
