Send us a textThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast you host Downrigger Dale talks to Racheal Vargas of Montana K9 Safety. If you own a dog and take it with you in the Outdoors or along with you anywhere this winter especially if you could not get to the Vet in minutes, you really need to listen to this podcast. It indeed could save your dog's life and save you from a whole lot of heartache. Racheal is a nurse that has turned into the Florence Nightingale for our four-legged best friends. Years ago, she decided to use her medical and safety training knowledge to train people how to save their pets should an emergency happen where lifesaving care was up to them. Think about it, do you know how to perform CPR on your dog? The Furbearer Trapping Season just started, what if you were out hiking with your pup and it stepped in a trap, would you know how to safely free him or her from the trap? Let's say you and Rover were out bird hunting and he suddenly dropped into a seizure, would you know what to do? How about if you're out ice fishing and your dog falls through the ice and goes into hyperthermia and their heart stops, would you know how to save them? This Podcast will tell you all about how you can get on your way from just being a pet owner to becoming a life saver. Oh, but there is more to it than just that. Racheal will can teach your kids too! She can even train them how to start their own dog care and walking business! Sounds a bit more fun and lucrative than a lemonade stand, doesn't it? This truly is such an important Podcast because we know so many of you that listen take your dogs all over with you. Let's face they are family, they are our hunting partners, our best friends. So, let's all learn about it by listening right now!Links:To learn all about Montana K9 Safety and all the classes like the Free Trap Release class as well as other classes like, K9 Wilderness Emergency Care, Pet First Aid/CPR and Disaster Response, K9 First Aid Workshop, Pet CPR, the Kids Classes and more just click here.Keep scrolling down in the above link to learn also about the pet first aid kit that Rigger and Racheal talked about or to see some pictures and more!If you have questions for Racheal, you can email her by clicking here.Good old Rigger would love to hear from you too, especially if you have ideas for future podcast topics just click here!Remember to tune in to our live radio show, The Montana Outdoor Radio Show, every Saturday morning from 6:00AM to 8:00AM. It's Baton Rouge: Out to Lunch

Around two million people in the United states will be diagnosed this year with cancer. Taken together, each one of these individual life-changing diagnoses forms a part of an overall cancer care industrial complex which adds to up to an annual $75 billion sector of the national economy. And, like every other business heading into the second quarter of the 21st Century, cancer treatment is changing and advancing with the implementation of technology that includes AI.  In Baton Rouge, very few people are more familiar with the current state of cancer care than Sotirios Stathakis, Chief of Physics at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, and a radiation oncology physicist with more than two decades of experience in this highly technical field. Sotirios came to Mary Bird in 2023, and in his role there oversees the cancer center's physics and dosimetry teams. He also is involved in implementing new AI technology at Mary Bird to help improve internal processes, with the goal of improving both outcomes and the patient experience. Sotirios is a native of Greece who was educated in Canada and Scotland before returning to Greece to obtain his PhD in medical physics. Prior to his current perch in Baton Rouge, he served in a similar role at the University of Texas Health San Antonio Mays Cancer Center, an NCI-designated cancer center .   While cancer care is one of the fastest growing segments of our healthcare economy, another rapidly expanding field is pet care, which is growing by 7% a year. In cold hard cash, over the past 12 months Americans spent even more on pet care than cancer care: a whopping $80 Billion. According to numerous studies, we love our pets to the point where we'll sacrifice all sorts of other discretionary expenses to lavish our furry friends with whatever they need to be their best selves. Locally, Lauren Swartley is a hands-on expert on the subject of pet care. Lauren is the founder and owner of Lend A Paw, a premium dog walking and pet sitting company that is bonded and Insured through Pet Sitter Associates, and Pet CPR & First Aid Certified through the American Red Cross.  Lend A Paw is also the first and only Fear Free certified pet sitting company in Louisiana. Lend a Paw provides in-home one-on-one care for pets, with specially curated visits and software, so you're able to view your pets in real time.  Lauren founded the business in 2018, after she adopted a heartworm positive Staffordshire terrier named Hayes and fell in love with him and the cause. Despite advances in medical science and the onward drumbeat of AI, for reasons we probably don't totally understand, lavishing love on our pets reportedly improves our opwn health. In this win-win world Sitorios and Lauren have more in common than you might think at first glance. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Mansurs On the Boulevard. Send us a Text Message. When our beloved pets face a crisis, every second counts, and having the right tools on hand can make all the difference. That's why we were thrilled to welcome back the ever-caring and insightful Dr. Cherie Buisson, a.k.a Doc B, to shed light on the importance of assembling a pet first aid kit. Together, we traversed the landscape of emergency preparedness, from the essential items every pet owner should have on hand to the personal tales of her own dachshunds' health scares that put these items to the test. Doc B's expertise illuminates how a well-stocked kit is not just about having supplies; it's about the peace of mind and readiness to protect our furry family members when they need us most.Navigating the do's and don'ts of pet first aid can be as complex as the animals we adore. In this episode, we go beyond the basics of bandages and gauze, unpacking the critical knowledge required to effectively manage pet emergencies. Our conversation spans the importance of proper medication administration, the dangers of substituting human drugs for pet pain relief, and the nuances of managing a pet choking incident. It's an educational journey filled with practical wisdom, including why keeping your vet's number close by and knowing the location of the nearest animal hospital can be life-saving. Doc B's personal anecdotes and practical tips arm you with the guidance to face any challenge, whether you're at home or adventuring outdoors with your pet.Preparing for the worst doesn't have to be daunting. As we wrap up this enlightening dialogue, we delve into specialized emergency scenarios like pet CPR and how to gear up for hurricane season with your four-legged companions in mind. Doc B reassures us that while pet first aid and training are important, they complement rather than replace the expertise of veterinary professionals. Our heartfelt discussion ends on a high note, with the revelation that Schotzi, Doc B's "quality control wiener," has bounced back to her spirited self. It's a testament to the resilience of our pets and the power of preparedness that gives them, and us, a fighting chance. Our guest today is Dr. Cherie Buisson (a.k.a. Doc B),  owner of Helping Hands Pet Hospice and Euthanasia Service.  Dr. Cherie Buisson is a 2000 graduate of Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She spent over 10 years in private practice and shelter medicine.  She started making pet hospice house calls in 2011 and found them to be the most fulfilling part of her practice. She is one of the first Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarians in the world, and the first to practice in the state of Florida. DocB is a Dachshund fanatic who enjoys reading, cycling, canoeing, and quilting. Can a luxury boutique experience involve dangling strands of Mastiff drool? We think so. What is the difference between walking my dog versus hiking with my dog? That's a great question. If you think about dog walking, it conjures up the picture of people walking their dogs in a typical neighborhood, or probably not that far outside of their neighborhood and walking maybe a half an hour, possibly an hour. Whereas what we do is conveniently pick up our clients’ dogs and we take them up into the mountains, in groups, in our vehicles that hold 12 dogs safely and comfortably. And we take them up to different trails in the mountains. And what we do there is we will hike dogs in nature with all of the fun stuff that goes on in nature. What goes in to preparing your dog for a hike and what should you take with you?How do you find good trails to hike on?What about encountering wildlife on the trail? Should I bring pepper spray? How can hiking with your dog help with leash reactivity? And we first should probably define what leash reactivity is.My guest today is Kath Allen who owns Hike Doggie. Kath spent 3 years hiking in the Italian Dolomites & Alps. She then moved to Golden, CO, enjoying a long successful corporate sales career and hiking with her dogs in the Rockies. 3 years ago, her company Hike Doggie was founded and now Kath & her team take 600+ dogs every month into the mountains for amazing on-leash hiking excursions. Did you know that pets can be record breaking title holders with Guinness world records? I'll tell you about some dogs and the unconventional skills that won them their titles. Next, Pet Tech Inc., the country's leading Pet First Aid and Care training organization, attempted to set a new Guinness World record themselves,  by teaching the most people how to do CPR in one day and I was there. Find out how learning cardio pulmonary resuscitation can save your pets life, hear true stories of pets whose lives were saved through CPR, and find out how long pet parents in California participated in a non-stop relay to set a new world record. Did they make it? Then, your dog uses its incredible sense of smell to do many marvelous things and how is their nose so different than yours?
