Rags-to-riches entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker and her daughter, A'Lelia Walker, built one of the most successful African American hair care businesses in American history. But it was only after A'Lelia broke free of her mother's singular vision that she found her calling in 1920s Harlem. That search for independence and purpose is at the center of A'Lelia Bundles' new book, “Joy Goddess: A'Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance.” It's our May selection for Bookmarked: the “Under the Radar” book club.

Author Colette Shade argues the socio-cultural shifts ushered in during the early 2000s remain significant today in her debut book, “Y2K: How the 2000s Became Everything (Essays on the Future That Never Was.)” It's our March selection for Bookmarked: the “Under the Radar” book club.
In this episode of Unreadable, Ross speaks with Shelby Van Pelt about her novel Remarkably Bright Creatures, this year's Forsyth Reads Together selection. Van Pelt's debut novel, published in 2022, remains a New York Times bestseller and features the unique perspective of Marcellus the octopus as a narrator. Van Pelt spoke with Ross about how she developed her characters, some based on true life and others based on people (and marine life) watching at the Georgia Aquarium, and she shared her excitement about the upcoming film adaptation. An Evening with Shelby Van Pelt is Mar 11, 2025 at the Forsyth Conference Center. The event is ticketed and currently full; however, there are a plethora of events related to the book taking place at all the Forsyth County Public Library branches. Most of us assume a very passive posture toward our faith. Our unspoken approach is “let go and let God”. Even as we are ambitious in our careers, our studies, and our relationships, often our spiritual life gets the leftovers. Just a slight shift in our priorities can make a world of difference in our spiritual experience.

There is a shared desire among all Christians to share their faith and win people over to the gospel. However, it comes with many challenges and difficulties. Especially to those who really immerse themselves with the people they are trying to reach. In those circumstances, how can one keep their own faith?

Our culture conditioned us to look only to the future for things that are bigger and better. The Bible, however, teaches us to look back. By remembering how God helped us in the past, our hearts will be infused with gratitude and hope for the future. Thus far the Lord has helped us. He was faithful in the past. He will continue to be faithful in the future.

Author Lucy Ferriss and host Catherine Nichols discuss Elizabeth Bowen's 1938 novel The Death of the Heart. They discuss the unique narrator—16-year-old Portia, almost unimaginably innocent and stubborn about refusing to learn the hard lessons of life—and whether her demands are reasonable within the world of the book, or the actual world. Lucy Ferriss is the author of eleven books, including her latest collection, Foreign Climes: Stories, which received the Brighthorse Books Prize; and the 2022 re-release of her novel, The Misconceiver. Other recent work includes the 2015 novel A Sister to Honor, as well as essays and short fiction in American Scholar, New England Review, Prairie Schooner, and elsewhere. Forthcoming in 2023 is a book of essays from Wandering Aengus Press, Meditations on a New Century, as well as Christina Stead's The Man Who Loved Children, a monograph in Ig Publishing's Bookmarked series. Bront'e Singleton is no stranger to trying — and struggling — to learn a new language. She downloaded all of the apps. Bookmarked all of the blogs and Youtube channels. Bought into a lot of resources, programs, and classes. But still she struggled. It definitely wasn't a lack of interest or ability. She loves languages and loves reading and has a natural gift for learning languages. It had way more to do with process than with passion. She needed more than just tips to learn a new language. She needed help with the types of habits and routines that would make it easier to stay consistent, manage her time, and finally see results from all her effort. It took her YEARS to realize what was missing from her own routine, and now she shares what she's learned about effective study techniques with other language learners. Today we're sitting down with Bront'e to discuss her journey as an entrepreneur and how the Incubator has helped her take her passion for learning new languages and translate that (see what I did there?) into a business that makes a measurable difference for others. What you'll learn in this episode: Bront'e's journey from full-time teacher (in a school) to full-time teacher (in her own biz) How language learning is similar to building a business What's changed for her biz in the last 12 months since joining the Incubator The biggest risks she's taken — and her biggest wins Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for listening in this week!
