...................................... FULL TRANSCRIPT ...................................... Hi, I'm Pascale Gibon and welcome to episode 151 of The Everyday Life Balance Show. We have recently all been experiencing change one way or another. As we return to a sense of normalcy: there are three categories of people who will display contrasting behaviours. The first category of people is happy with the status quo and wants things to remain the same. The second category of people is willing to embrace positive change and give it their whole. And the third category of people wants positive change; however, they struggle with it. Today’s episode is for the last category of people - the people who want to introduce positive change in their life; however, they struggle with it. Congratulations on deciding to make positive changes in your life. The changes that you want could range from the way you live, prioritising and leading with what matters to you the most to changing job or career, for example. Regarding job or career, many people rethink their job or career. The Office for National Statistics in the U.K. reveals a decrease of approximately 60% of vacancies for May 2020 compared to March 2020. The labour force survey data covering the data up to April 2020 shows a weakening in employment rate affecting mainly the self-employed and men. However, how can you pave your path to positive change the most natural way possible? What hinders a smooth transition in any area of our life is usually our resistance to it. Therefore the most significant barrier to positive change is our resistance to it. If you have been resisting change, I want to share with you today seven ways you can overcome your resistance to positive change. But first, let me explain what your resistance to change reveals. Your resistance to change might reveal four things. See whether you fit in any of these four things. Firstly the fear of the unknown and uncertainty. Secondly, your resistance to growth, and it’s time to move on to the next level in your life. Thirdly your resistance to what you need the most right now. Is it possible that the change occurring right now is what you need the most? Fourthly your disbelief that change is necessary to expand your field of possibilities. As you know what we resist persists. Therefore change will be disturbing your peace until you do something about it. The very thing you need is to break through your barrier of resistance to positive change. How can you break through the barrier of resistance to positive change? 1. Change your perception The first way in my view to break through the barrier to positive change is to change your perception. If you resist change, you need to build your flexibility muscles. As a result, you allow change to emerge as something positive. With change comes the opportunity to let go of the old for the creation of something new. Have there been times in your life when you resisted positive change and when it happened, you realised its benefits? Would you have it any other way? This time is not different. 2. Accept change The second way to break through the barrier to positive change is to accept positive change in your life. To ease the new transition that emergences the best way to create change is by mastering your creative power. You must be willing to create positive and transformational changes that are significantly different from the existing to benefit from its most significant impact and make it worthwhile. 3. Increase your confidence The third way to break through the barrier to positive change is to increase your confidence that you can adapt to change. It would be best if you changed the limiting beliefs you have around it, which cause your resistance to it into new ones. The most crucial and empowering belief you need to adopt is that you are willing to embrace positive change to improve the quality of your life. 4. Increase your clarity The fourth way to break through the barrier to positive change is to increase your clarity. You must be crystal clear about what you want to create. In other words, what you will replace the old by. It’s time to be clear about what the new you or your new life is going to be. 5. Introduce new and supportive habits The fifth way to break through the barrier to positive change is to commit to introducing new and supportive habits that would ease the transition. Until now, specific behaviour patterns kept you stuck and caused you misery. However, they are shaken to take your life to the next level. 6. Reinvent yourself The sixth way to break through the barrier to positive change is to reinvent yourself. The new door opening could be a real opportunity to reinvent yourself. Perhaps your life has been rather dull to date, and it’s time to spice it up and reignite your values and passions. 7. Make peace with change The seventh way to break through the barrier to positive change is to make peace with change. It has probably created anxiety, stress and even overwhelms. However, it’s time to make peace with change and decide to come out of your comfort zone to increase your happiness and inner peace. I always say that change is not easy; however, it is inevitable. I believe that when you see change as something positive, which encourages progress and an opportunity for growth, this makes the transition to something new easier. Carly is a writer, speaker and appearance activist. She challenges people's thinking about what it's like to have a visibly different appearance. Carly has written for many publications including The Guardian, Daily Life, The ABC, Mamamia, Frankie magazine and SBS. She has used her blog to write about her skin condition, Ichthyosis, as well as to promote causes such as Love Your Sister and Donate Life. Carly received the 2010 and 2013 Yooralla Media Awards for Best Online Commentary for her body of disability focused writing (she declined 2014's award due to ethical reasons). She won the best personal blog category for Kidspot Voices of 2013, and the 2013 BUPA Health Activist award for Positive Life Change, and she was also a finalist in the Best Australian Blogs competition in 2011, 2012 and 2014. Carly was named as one of Australia's most influential women in the 2014 Australian Financial Review and Westpac 100 Women of Influence Awards. Most recently, Carly received a diversity award from the Australian Centre for Leadership for Women for organising Australia's first Ichthyosis meet.
