This is the next in the series of Confessions of an SEO. After a hiatus I return with a confessions of sorts - what kind of conversation are we having with business owners? While attending the YACSS SEO Conference in Denmark not only was I in a terrific group as a speaker - there was more! We started to talk about the need for there to be more professionalism in the SEO industry. And to start, we need to change the conversation we're having with business owners who need our skills to make their company more profitable by getting as many clients, customer, or contracts from their online presence. I call this episode - Penny Wise Pound Foolish since the "cost" of an SEO campaign depends on the value to the business. There's actually another popular saying that points out that the forest may be hard to see because of the trees. The takeaway here is that while most conventional financial messages revolve around seeking a high rate of return (ROR), the fact that everything is financed, including investments, is overlooked completely! Hey, Sheevaun Moran here driving for your success. I hear weird little things from business owners that relate to being Penny wise and pound-foolish.  I'll give you an example so you go you make a choice to hire a vendor and they give you a price they do the work and then what happens is you hear from somebody else it was a lower price that you could have gotten a better deal that something else could have been added in and really what you've done is you're now doing what I call polling you're polling to see if you made the right choice and then you're polling to do this weird little thing of crushing yourself and making yourself wrong for making it the first choice that may have been a higher price. So Pennywise and pound foolish are only going to hurt you financially. If you want your financial situation to get better you're going to have to be a little bit more productive in how you deal with Pennywise and pound foolish if you're going to buy something, choose it... choose it with your heart and soul. Go for it. Stick with it. Love the results and don't go looking for a better price after the effect really, really go and commit to it and be in presence because when you're in presence before you make such a choice you won't make pound foolish choice and you will be more Pennywise in your truest highest alignment. In 2013, University of Chicago Professor Harold Pollack hosted a casual online video chat with author Helaine Olen. In the video, Pollack and Olen dig into some of the points Olen made in her book, Pound Foolish. They agreed that most people are given bad advice from financial advisors and that the best financial advice doesn't have to be extensive or complicated. It can fit on one index card.Shortly after the interview, Pollack went online and posted an image of a simple index card that listed what he thought were the most essential principles of personal finance. And the post went viral. It captured the attention of academics, economists and newsgroups. In response, Pollack and Olen decided to team up and expand upon their index card idea in a book titled, The Index Card: Why Personal Finance Doesn't Have to Be Complicated. Brandon and Dave make it through most of the principles from the book and give their opinions.

"M" is for Molloy, Robert (1906-1977). Novelist, editor, critic. Malloy was born in Charleston, but at the age of twelve his family moved to Philadelphia. He began his literary career as a publisher’s reader, translator, and book reviewer. Eventually he became the literary editor of the New York Sun and began writing short stories that appeared in national magazines. In 1945 he published his first novel, Pride’s Way—an engaging social comedy of a large Charleston Catholic family. Malloy summoned up the city of his youth, viewing his characters and his native city with affection, humor, and gentle irony. It was a Literary Guild selection and a play version was performed in Charleston. Other Charleston novels followed: Pound Foolish (1950) and A Multitude of Sins (1953). Robert Malloy also wrote the nonfiction work, Charleston: A Gracious Heritage.

I am a very frugal person. It is almost exhilarating for me to find a great deal on something.  But sometimes I get so focused on the lowest price that I forget the big picture. For example, sometimes I would buy the cheapest shoes but they would only last 8 months. I did not realize the worth of investing a bit more in shoes that would last for years. It not only would have saved me money over the long run but a lot of time and energy that I spent buying multiple pairs of shoes. I was penny wise but pound foolish. I was so focused on the little things that I didn't think about the big picture.  Here are a few examples of how we can all worry more about our pounds (or dollars on this side of the atlantic) and less about our short term pennies. One of the biggest issues that people run into is when they focus on their small bills (which is not a bad thing) but they rush their large ones. You can save a few hundred dollars a month by packing a lunch to work but you could save thousands by making educated decisions when buying a home or vehicles. Obviously, every dollar can make an impact, just make sure to give the large dollar item decisions the time and attention they deserve. Those decisions will affect your financial life again and again for years to come.  It may save you a lot of money in the short term to skip regular car maintenance but it is never fun to be hit with large repairs. Take the time to properly maintain and take care of your vehicles now so that you not only save yourself from big unexpected problems but your cars will last longer and have higher resale values as well.  No one likes going to the doctor but regular check ups can save a lot of money as well as health issues down the road. If you notice a small problem creep up, take care of it early. Your pocketbook and wellbeing will thank you that you did. It can be tempting to drive all over town to get the best deal on produce or gas. While not always a bad idea, we have to make sure that we aren't spending more in time and gas than what we are saving. Now, I am not saying that we should ignore the small details. The details matter and really add up over time. All I am saying is that we have to get out of the weeds and look at the big picture sometimes. This will help us stay focused on what is really important and what will make the biggest impact over a lifetime.
