Another Way To See It
The Grief of Harms Caused

Another Way To See It

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2024 74:49

On this episode of The Another Way To See It podcast, we continue our discussion of grief by addressing other possible gates of grief. Today we talk about a proposed 6th gate, brought forth by writer, artist, death worker, Rachael Rice. The sixth gate is called For Harm Done (that cannot be undone). Rachael says “the sixth gate includes the ways we avoidably and unavoidably collude with systems of harm, for moral injuries, for bystanding or freezing during abuse, for accidents and ignorance, for leveraging supremacies like whiteness as a vector of harm, and for just trying to exist and thrive in a war-hungry, deeply shitty culture with the most aggressively remedial world view on earth.” Rachael Rice: https://www.instagram.com/rachaelrice/Embodiment Matters Podcast (where we first heard about the 6th gate): https://embodimentmatters.com/podcast/ Poetry Offering: Call Me By My True Names By Thich Nhan Hanh:https://plumvillage.org/articles/please-call-me-by-my-true-names-song-poem We have been using Francis Weller's book- The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief, as a jumping off point and guide to this exploration. We have gone through the five gates that Francis has written about and are on our own for the discussion of further potential gates. We acknowledge that there are many many ways to name, explore,  experience, and tend grief. Francis has given context, language, and probably most importantly the permission and invitation that we must befriend our grief, bring it close, and offer our grief the care and compassion sorely missing from our modern society. Francis Weller is a psychotherapist, writer, and soul activist. We highly recommend that you find a copy of this book that you can write in because it is such a valuable resource for the inevitable encounters that we all have or will have with grief. Francis Weller: https://www.francisweller.net/Books: https://www.francisweller.net/books.html  We always love to hear from you, reach out:https://www.instagram.com/anotherwaytoseeitpodcast/Support our show:   https://www.buzzsprout.com/1694878/supporters/new Coaches: Kim Moranhttps://www.kimmorancoaching.com/https://www.instagram.com/kimcalifornia/ Randy Poindexterhttps://www.redesignyourinternalblueprints.com/abouthttps://www.instagram.com/the.randy.lee/ Tracy Holemeyerhttps://www.uncontrollablyme.com/https://www.instagram.com/uncontrollably_me/ Produced by: Kim MoranMusic: River Lies in Wait  L-Ray Music  Support the Show.

How do we die well inside of a culture that rewards us for dissociating from what's actually happening? Is it possible to witness and transform death phobia into something more true? The Numinous Podcast with Carmen Spagnola: Intuition, Spirituality and the Mystery of Life

Kael Klassen moved from the corporate world into motherhood before fumbling, fortunately quite quickly, through a series of well-meaning-but-problematic-white-lady spiritual endeavours. Since extracting herself as much as possible from that, she has grounded her work in the modality of trancework, along with writing and creating. Here we talk about missteps each of us have made on our spiritual paths as white settler folks. In this confessional episode, we cover topics like culty yoga teacher trainings, ancestral healing and appropriation, mental health on the healing journey and how it intersects with the creative process. Kael shares intimately about coping with grief and rage, and the rituals that help her to root into winter. In this episode we mentioned the art and philosophical approach of our esteemed colleague, Rachael Rice. You can find Kael's offerings on instagram @kael.klassen or @liminalrootsbotanica or online at www.liminalrootsbotanica.com

This is a segment of episode 328 of Last Born In The Wilderness, “Death Keeps You Honest: Decentering The Individual, A Story Of Loss w/ Rachael Rice.” Listen to the full episode: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com/episodes/rachael-rice Follow Rachael and her work: https://rachaelrice.com Artist, writer, and death worker Rachael Rice joins me to discuss death practice, entitlement, and honesty in our time of collapse and extinction. This is an honest conversation, between friends. Both Rachael and I have very different lived experiences, but we align in several significant ways, especially when it comes to interpreting and navigating an extraordinarily messy time. The felt sense and scope of loss in the midst of the ongoing pandemic is shared between us. We bear witness to the wide-spread denial and full-faced First World entitlement — the “return to normal” and “I've-got-mine-ism” of it all, from top to bottom. It is a lot to bear. And yet, we acknowledge the time we are living through may be remembered as the good ol' days in the years and decades to come. It should be remembered, or learned, that pandemics are ecological. So are the droughts, heatwaves, wildfires, and floods that are so common at this time. The pace of change is dizzying, and not letting up. How does an industrialized society, founded in the shadow of Manifest Destiny, bamboozled by the decrepit fantasy of the American Dream, handle such truths? In short, not well. There are ghosts here. Rachael and I are not separate from this, we don't stand apart from the crude reality checks, and we acknowledge this. At the root, this discussion is about death — the shades of acceptance, and fear, of it. That's what this conversation encircles and embraces. Death — as the event that unites all living beings; as a practice; as the elephant in the room; and finally, as the ultimate teacher. Artist, writer, and death worker Rachael Rice joins me to discuss death practice, entitlement, and honesty in our time of collapse and extinction. This is an honest conversation, between friends. Both Rachael and I have very different lived experiences, but we align in several significant ways, especially when it comes to interpreting and navigating an extraordinarily messy time. The felt sense and scope of loss in the midst of the ongoing pandemic is shared between us. Rachael Rice is an artist, writer and certified weirdo who crafts scroll-stopping content for people who want to shape change. We talked about Rachael's childhood aspirations to her current work as an artist, from drawing in condensation on windows to moving into fine art and acrylic paint, to moving back toward folk art and alternative mediums with salvaged materials and natural earth pigments that may not stand the test of time (like her initial draw towards art making in window condensation). Originally recorded in June 2021, our conversation still resonates a year later. Though our conversation is placed in time by references to the heat wave in Portland Oregon, the George Floyd racial reckoning, and discussions about the Covid vaccine, so much of what we talk about is still at issue: the planet and how we're going to solve the climate crisis (according to Rachael: it's not going to be by rounding up purchases at Whole Foods!); how do we decide to actually sit back and reckon with the connections between racism, power and privilege (according to Rachael: internalized capitalism is a spell, it's in our bodies now); and how to deal with our/American/white cultural avoidance of death (according to Rachael: we've got to befriend death if we want to live and live more deeply; and we need to work across difference with our neighbors  and strengthen community care). This conversation is incredibly fascinating, and Rachael is an exceptional all-around human. Follow her at: https://rachaelrice.com/ https://www.instagram.com/rachaelrice/

Rachael Rice is someone who I have held in high esteem for some time. She is first and foremost, an artist — depicting the world as she sees it and as what she sees coming. She's also a prolific writer, educator, and death doula. Her work lies at the crossroads of grief, radical togetherness, creative expression, death, learning, and magic. Rachael's art, writing, and speaking have really expanded my lens of the world as I work to decolonize my mind and awaken to a deeper, more real, more radical experience of this world. So I asked Rachael to come onto the Belonging podcast to talk about death, knowing that we would weave a conversation that goes so much deeper than just death — because death is a part of life, it's a part of all things. I really see this conversation as a continuation of the one I began with my death midwife teacher, Jerrigrace Lyons, on the Belonging podcast last year. Rachael and I recorded this conversation with the nearness of death that felt potent in the height of COVID-19. Together, We talk about how we live in a death-phobic society, a society that believes in unfettered growth — not really taking in that life has a beginning, a middle, and an end. We talk about the consequences when we pretend that things don't end (because they do), being in an underworld journey, somatic grief embodiment practices, and a radical remembering of animism. Sometimes you just need a winding conversation…one with really no start and end (other than we only had an hour scheduled). Throw in Rachael Rice and you have one magical, radical, whimsical, intriguing, inspiring, and challenging conversation WE COVER THE GAMUT…LITERALLY…LIKE CRADLE TO GRAVE. We start off talking about art and snowflakes and how BAD I am at art and we throw in some exotic marshmallow making and then Rachael agrees to be my surrogate crafty mom…WHA?!?!?!?!?! (Little does she know I fully plan on taking her up on this when I’m trying to think of a crafty project with my daughter). We end up talking about our abusive dads and how it impacts our parenting (and truthfully, scares us), why we think people should be judged, cultural appropriation and how it relates to/impacts Rachael’s artwork, disability advocacy and the importance of evolving our language, sitting in the uncomfortable, her work as a death doula (this stuff is f a s c i n a t i n g), and our anesthetized culture which OF COURSE has people eating Tide Pods. Listen in, take notes, ask yourself (and others) some hard questions and come say HI to RACHAEL and ME on Insta to continue the conversation. FAVORITE MOMENTS To see boho-laced dreamcatchers manufactured overseas so that I can make money…? Fuck that. No way…that’s not why I’m on this planet. Can white people just unplug from the internet for a minute and let the non-dominant folks have the floor….throw them some money and just say, “Thanks.”? I’m trying to direct my rage….I’ve appropriated the anger of oppressed folks and I need to remember…what’s mine? There’s ableism in demanding everyone to memorize and learn concepts our culture doesn’t actually educate us on…at all! It’s staggering the amount of care taken to protect children from the reality of the world…the way that life is. Death for me, crosses the level of comfortability in the uncomfortable and I think it’s because I’ve wanted my dad dead for most of my life and that makes me feel like a shitty person. Parts of us are meant to be broken – that brokenness is part of how we know ourselves to be human. I have been thinking about shame for a couple of years now. Mostly, I have socially unacceptable thoughts about it. But since reading Jennifer Jacquet's book, Is Shame Necessary? New Uses For An Old Tool, I have been both relieved and emboldened. So I'm releasing my shame around championing shame. I'm thrilled to welcome Jennifer to the show to expand on her ideas around effective uses of shame when dealing with large-scale cooperation dilemmas like climate change, over-fishing, and racism. In this episode, Jennifer mentions high profile examples like Justine Sacco whose life was ruined by a single tweet, and Walter Palmer, the dentist who shot Cecil the Lion. She also makes a distinction between shaming corporations versus individuals. As such, it is a form of punishment that scales well. If you would like to see the tour de force example of the public shaming of the Dow Chemical Company by The Yes Men, here is the video. The response is detailed in this video. Here's the manel-shaming featuring David Hasselhoff, plus the article that did the math on statistical proof of sexism with regard to the issue. In the Rubenation segment, Ruben mentioned our friend, J.B.MacKinnon and his excellent book, The Once And Future World. If you love the planet, you should read it. This interview goes well with episode TNP67: Confronting Whiteness with Rachael Rice and Marybeth Bonfiglio. Check out more of Jennifer's work at jenniferjacquet.com
