Dave's Three Things segment starts off with three things he loves about the show's guest: a world-class chef and the owner of the Empellón restaurant group, Alex Stupak. Stupak catches up with Dave (whom he hasn't seen since before the pandemic) and reflects on his culinary journey, including his admiration of Albert Adrià, his time at Grant Achatz's Alinea, and his experience helming the pastry program at Wylie Dufresne's WD-50. The two ponder the dampening effects of restaurant criticism on creativity—and Dave suggests that Stupak is a culinary Prometheus for his constant innovation of new culinary techniques. The two continue talking through Alex's journey of making Mexican food, culminating with a discussion of Alex's new critically acclaimed restaurant, Mischa, in New York. Big ideas, strong opinions, and a deadpan Instagram: These are a few of our favorite things. Former pastry chef and current Empellon and Mischa boss man Alex Stupak is a complicated—and incredibly sincere—dude, and in this episode, we have a really spirited conversation about what it's like to open a new restaurant that isn't part of the Empellon Mexican multiverse. The food at Mischa is Eastern European, and it's Stupak's most personal project to date. We get into that, as well as some big ideas for the future. Tatiana Stupak (piano) started learning the piano at age five, studying at the Special School of the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory in St. Petersburg, and after that, for a further five years, continuing at the Conservatory itself. She is the winner of international music competitions including the Leipzig Bach competition. Tatiana is very well known in Cyprus, having played piano at more than 80 events in the last few years, both as a solo pianist and accompanying other musicians. Since 2018, she has played piano solos at The Big Choir Project concerts. She has developed a second major interest since early 2019: mountaineering! Her goal is to climb the 7 highest mountains of 7 continents. Having had no previous climbing experience, she succeeded in reaching the summit of the highest mountain in Europe (Elbrus) and Africa (Kilimanjaro). Just recently she climbed Mount Damavand, the highest peak in Iran and Western Asia and the highest volcano in Asia She plans next to climb the highest peak in South America, Mount Aconcagua in Argentina while playing music and she is attempting to get in the the Guiness Book of records; she loves adventures of all kinds. For example, in 2018, she took a hot-air balloon flight in Cappadocia; in the summer of 2019, she did her first sky-dive, at Kingsfield Airfield in Cyprus. She also took a trip to frozen Lake Baikal early in 2020, where she played the Russain Gusli instrument. And she leaned free diving in 2020 as well, and proved it, by being filmed playing a piano on the bed of the Mediterranean. She like to combine her musical talents with her adventures, whenever possible. She arranges charity concerts for children and for the church, and brings famous musicians from Russia, for example from the Bolshoi Theatre. She opened the Tatiana Stupak School of Music in 2018, where students can enter for examinations set by the Royal Schools of Music and by Trinity College. Students may also take part in public concerts, to gain experience in performing before audiences. In 2018, Tatiana won awards on being chosen in competition, as Russian Cultural Woman of the Year in Cyprus. In the summer of 2019, having organised fund-raising concerts on several occasions for the Institute of Neurology and Genetics, she was invited to play piano solos at a concert at the Presidential Palace, where President Anastasiades presented her with an award on behalf of the Institute. She has been interviewed many times on Cyprus radio and TV channels. Early in 2020 she was interviewed on the subject of children and music, and the interview was shown on Smile TV; previously she appeared live on TV ONE's charity show, DanSing for You, not as a pianist, but as a dancer. Most recently, she was interviewed by RIK1 TV, and the interview was broadcast in July 2020. Also during 2020, over a period of a few weeks, she made live broadcasts on the Internet, giving illustrated talks about ten classical music composers. Tatiana maintains two YouTube channels: one for herself, and another for her music school. http://tatianastupak.com/biography (http://tatianastupak.com/biography) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPa-fpO17yX0y1aN51Yu_WA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPa-fpO17yX0y1aN51Yu_WA)

Today, Bob Stupak is considered just another colorful character in the history Las Vegas and properly credited as the visionary behind Stratosphere. His tacky taste, public antics and wacky persona are all just part of his legend. The truth is, Bob embodies everything negative you've ever been warned about gambling and the industry. He didn't want to just take your money, he wanted to make you look foolish while he did it. His nickname might as well have been "fine print Stupak” because just about everything he did had a catch to it or a technicality he hoped you would miss so he could exploit. He preyed on those that didn't know better. But what's wrong with that? Most people know there is a mathematically proven way to play some games and yet willfully choose to ignore them in favor of strategies that increase the odds already stacked against them. Some people believe the earth is flat. The fact is we all have access to the same information, especially in the Internet age. The only disadvantage one person has over another is self-imposed. An intellectual isn't discourage from using their acquired knowledge so why is gambling any different? Morality, you say? Well, as Canada Bill Jones said, it's immoral to let a sucker keep his money. I’m pretty sure Bob just thought it was fun.

Today's show is focussed on looking back at a different time in Las Vegas history. We are spending this episode remembering Bob Stupak and Vegas World, a casino that would surely not exist in today's climate. It will, however, hold some very fond memories and provided some amazing offers and tons of stories and opportunities for those who visited it. We discuss the ways in which Stupak turned Vegas rules upside down when he opened, how this served his business and the offers which he developed to draw in gamblers. We compare how this looked with today's version of Las Vegas and why most of what he did would not fly any more. We also look at why it worked in the 70s and 80s and what this teaches us about the gambling and travel industry in general, so for all this and then some, be sure to tune into ZorkCast, today!Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode:Bob StupakVegas Worldand more Vegas World Info ZorkCast FaceBook Group- JOIN TODAY!(Continue and Start the Conversation)TravelZorkZorkCast on TwitterZorkCast on Instagram© 2019 ZorkCast © 2019 TravelZork
Turn on the TV or flip through the latest celebrity magazine and you're almost guaranteed to find a blurb or picture of the latest botched plastic surgery or rumors about a celebrity's suddenly changed look. Stupak, a lifelong pro-life advocate, discusses how he had to reconcile his advocacy for comprehensive healthcare reform with his opposition to abortion. On today's episode of THE FOOD SEEN, find out when Mexican food went from crunchy shell, ground beef, and shredded cheese taco nights, to transformative tortillas made of fresh masa for Alex Stupak? When this pastry prodigy, when from sweet to savory, yet alone outside of his culinary comfort zone, many questioned his actions. The reaction: Stupak has made us reconsider the the quality of being authentic, and proved that the ubiquitous taco goes way beyond the borders of Mexico. Having opened three Empellon restaurants (Taqueria, Cocina, Al Pastor) devoted to the further exploration of Mexican food, and through his cookbook “Tacos: Recipes and Provocations”, Stupak make you think past El Paso. *photos by Evan Sung *photos by Evan Sung “Molecular gastronomy started as a movement in science. It was a better understand of what happens when we cook food. It has nothing to do with creativity.” [07:00] “The problem is with a corn tortilla is that it's a gluten free, fat free, sugar free product. It's a very unforgiving thing. It doesn't reheat well.” [20:00]
Join Grand Rapids Press editors Jeff Cranson and Ed Golder for this week's Talking Michigan Politics. Topics include: 1. The race for governor Last week's poll (PDF), that found U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra, R-Holland, hanging on to a lead in the GOP primary. Is Hoekstra's solid support in Republican-rich West Michigan enough to propel him to victory in the primary? Does the Manoogian mansion civil case and innuendo continue to dog Attorney General Mike Cox, another GOP candidate? As Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard continues to lag in GOP polls, does he consider a run for Congress instead? 2. Congressional races. What's going on in the Grand Rapids-based 3rd district? Democrat Pat Miles issued a press release ahead of Thursday's campaign finance report filing deadline, saying he has raised $100,000. Republican candidate and state Rep. Justin Amash of Cascade Township talks to Grand Rapids-area business leaders at a breakfast event hosted by Amway President Doug DeVos. And what of the Tea Party's role in Bart Stupak's decision not to seek re-election in the northern Michigan 1st District? Jeff said last week that if Stupak stayed in the race, he would win despite the Tea Party opposition. After Stupak pulled out on Friday Jack Lessenberry posited: "I think that if he had run he would have won, easily. And he would have been helped by the fact that three bus loads of out-of-towners showed up to try to tell his neighbors to vote against him." Will the entire country be watching Michigan's 1st District in November? 3. Taxes. Sunday, the Press launches the April installment of the Michigan 10.0 series, focusing on tax structure and the crisis looming even before being expedited by a world-wide economic collapse. One topic explored: a push by some to lift exemptions on income tax for pensions. Conversation starters • Ed on the Washington Post's Gene Weingarten's Pulitzer-winning exploration of arbitrary judicial and law enforcement reactions to prosecuting parents whose children died after being left in cars. • Jeff on the citizenry's need to demand for disclosure of campaign contributions to secret, independent groups and real-time campaign finance disclosure. The Supreme Court ruling that cleared the way for corporate and union contributions also said those groups can be required to disclose who donated the money that paid for the ads.

To gain their historic control of Congress, Democrats fielded moderate candidates who didn't always follow the party line, especially when it came to abortion. Now that the Democratic Party has the legislative upper hand, are they willing to negotiate away reproductive rights for other political gains? NOW goes to Allentown, Pennsylvania to ask: Are abortion rights now in jeopardy at the very hands of the party that has historically protected them? Among those interviewed are pro-life Democratic U.S. Representative Bart Stupak and former DNC Chairman Howard Dean. "If there was a bill on the floor to reverse Roe vs Wade, and says 'life begins at conception,' I would vote for it." Congressman Stupak tells NOW. Jen Boulanger, director of the often-protested Allentown Women's Center, says, "I would expect more from the Democratic Party, to stick to their ideals, not just throw us to the curb." Has the Democratic Party traded principles for power?
