This is Vlog Episode #31: Part 2: Coronasummer Family Minivan Road Trip | Day 2 Colorado to Kansas - Miles and Miles and Miles of Corn Fields #coronasummer #familyroadtrip #minivanroadtripDay 2 we traveled from Keystone, Colorado to Hays, Kansas. Our end goal was Kansas City - specifically the Great Wolf Lodge, but as it turns out the Lodge has been bit by the bug and wasn't fully open.We were so sad! In part, because The Great Wolf Lodge was our biggest plan for our family minivan road trip! It was the one thing we were super excited to do during this dreadful coronasummer. We were also disappointed because there is nothing much else to do in Kansas but look out the window of the minivan! Instead we called it a day on our minivan road trip in a big little city called Hays, Kansas in Northwestern Kansas about 3.5 hours outside of Kansas City. We were super sad and disappointed. First we got some greasy hamburgers at Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, and then called every hotel to find one with vacancy enough to fit our big brood. Turns out the Comfort Inn offers a great set up with two queens and a pull out couch! The only downside is apparently the Comfort Inn has paper thin walls. The manager called us to tell us that our "neighbors" could hear the kids walking around. Yes, walking around. . We only made it about 7 hours on Day 2, but after 12 hours the first day, we earned a break! 7 hours is a long time in a car with little ones! During that time we saw miles and miles of corn fields and learned more trivia. We stopped in Limon, Colorado, mailed our taxes, got some Mexican Food and found a Railroad Park to play at! At one rest stop after passing through Kansas, we saw disconnected truck beds lined up in a big field and made up grand stories about why they were there. Questions We Asked Ourselves: Where have all the restrooms gone? People still gotta pee! Favorite activities: Population Trivia and Ghost Town Trivia. We continued our game of 'The Price is Right' to see who could get closest to the correct population of the cities we passed through. We looked up state and city facts, we compared city names and found out how many states have the same city names! The winners for each trivia question got a handful of M&M's, Skittles, or whatever we picked up at the gas stop. What are you doing this summer? This week's offers something of a hodge-podge, centered around the theme of out-and-about town. We start with the Birmingham Dance Walk event organized by Sherri Ross. Last Sunday, March 20 I hung out at Railroad Park for a while to be a part of the first Birmingham Dance Walk of 2016. It was the Dance Walk that inspired this episode to share some sound bites about what makes Birmingham Shine and to let you know about a few events coming up over the next few weeks. All of these events and festivities are in Birmingham, except for one. That one is a camping-and-yoga trip for women that some of my Shoals friends are doing at Cane Creek Canyon near Muscle Shoals. If that’s something you’re interested in, listen through to the end because there’s a registration deadline looming. When I started Birmingham Shines last year, I went out in April to Pepper Place Market to gather some sound bites from folks about what makes Birmingham Shine. You heard from two of those in the teaser: Preston and Eric. Thanks to you two guys for sharing your thoughts on what makes Birmingham Shine! One of the things I discovered that weekend in April of 2015, just before I launched the podcast is that folks are shy around microphones, even when there’s no camera involved. I had a bit more success at this year's Birmingham Dance Walk. First we’re going to hear from Sherri Ross, founder of Birmingham Dance Walk and her hubby, Daniel Walters. They give us some info about Dance Walk and Daniel also talks a bit about living downtown. Then we hear from Trudy Bezet about what she loves about Birmingham. After Trudy, we hear from Panama Jack You Up of the Tragic City Rollers about their next roller derby meet at the Zamora Shrine Temple in Irondale. Then we have Laura Gaines talking about the Sol Dance Experience for women. She's followed by Jennifer King, who has the blog Stellar Fashion and Fitness, gives the heads-up on an upcoming free 5K on April 2. After that, my friends Summer and Ashley share a bit about the camping and yoga trip set for April 9-10 at Cane Creek Canyon near Muscle Shoals. You can still register as of March 24, 2016, but you’re running out of time. If you’re interested and don’t have time to listen, you can find out more at ashleybakeryoga.com. This is an excerpt from a full interview available in the Discover Grow Shinecast. After the Summer and Ashley excerpt, I have a short promo from Michael Syms about Zyp Bikeshare and close it out with a another bit of sound from Ben of Jones Valley Teaching Farm, recorded in April 2015 at Pepper Place. Promotional Disclosure: At the time I recorded the full interview with Summer and Ashley for the Discover Grow Shinecast (available at http://shinecast.tv) I had not received any promotional consideration from them. During the week of March 20, however, I was asked if I would like to receive a discount to attend the April 9-10 yoga and camping outing at Cane Creek and I said yes. So, at the time of THIS episode, I have received something of value from these guests and want to disclose that to make sure I'm in compliance with FTC rules for bloggers and podcasters. Katie Exum, publisher and editor of Alabama Trails magazine is the guest on episode 33 of Birmingham Shines. Rotary Trail in downtown Birmingham is the next trail set to open in Birmingham. Rotary Trail is part of a much larger trail system under development in the Magic City and surrounding areas. We are so blessed to have amazing outdoor recreation opportunities all around us. Birmingham’s burgeoning trail system and city parks are one of the reasons that Birmingham is gaining so much attention from national media and tourism bloggers. Yes, we have amazing food. But we have so much more and outdoor recreation is a big part of that. I wanted to have Katie on the show because she and her husband have created a relatively new magazine that focuses on outdoor recreation opportunities all across Alabama, including those here in the greater Birmingham area. I think it’s a great resource for anyone who wants to learn more about what to see and do all across Alabama, including right here in Birmingham. If you’re a regular listener to Birmingham Shines, you might remember that Deon Gordon said he marks the turning point in Birmingham’s renaissance with the creation of Railroad Park. Others on the show have echoed that sentiment. Teresa Thorne, executive director of City Action Partnership, known as CAPS downtown, is one of those individuals. Another guest, David Weigel singled out the city parks and outdoor recreation opportunities surrounding the greater Birmingham area as one of the reasons Birmingham Shines. Scot Duncan, a professor at Birmingham Southern College talked about Alabama’s amazing biodiversity and why it matters for our city, region and state. Story: Ready to take a “trip” on The Georgetown Loop Railroad? Your journey starts at Devil’s Gate Depot as you stand between the cars and hear the sounds of this historic narrow gauge train as it rounds a tight bend. Things morph from there… enjoy the psychedelic ride. Artist Notes: The piece begins with the raw field recording of the train as it goes around a tight turn. It’s just such an amazing set of sounds I wanted to offer the listener context and a taste of the harmonic content of the original source material before I took things to another place. I then manually play and improvise from there performing the notes in chromatic mode and heavily manipulating the field recordings as the piece progresses. Near the end of the piece I’m using effects like comb filters to create what sound almost like long tremolo strings. Another fun thing for me was manipulating rail noise through a comb filter and delay and then changing the delay time (which changes pitch) to create what almost sounds like an arpeggio of pizzicato strings notes. While I was not allowed to travel between cars (because it’s a narrow gauge and runs along mountain drop offs and on high bridges), they allowed me to stand outside the closed door of the car between cars. This being the case I got some AWESOME recordings isolated from other passengers for the most parts. Lots of great wheels squeaking, flexing of the old cars, coupler noise, and sometimes engine noise. Instrumentation & Instrumentalities: I used only the Elektron Octatrack. I configured the machine to use 4 tracks made up of 3 field recordings from the session mentioned above each with their own insert effects. One track was used twice with a different set of effects. I also had the Octatrack configured to use track 8 for two master effects. After setting up the patch for the Octatrack, I rehearsed the piece a few times experimenting with different effects, expressive morphs, and notes. I then recorded the piece in one real-time pass without edits. Field Recording Notes I recorded these field recordings on The Georgetown Loop Railroad which is about 45 miles West of Denver... “one of Colorado’s first visitor attractions. Completed in 1884, this spectacular stretch of three-foot narrow gauge railroad was considered an engineering marvel for its time. In 1973, the Colorado Historical Society began restoring the railroad as part of its 978-acre Georgetown Loop Historic Mining & Railroad Park.” More here… http://georgetownlooprr.com/.” I’ve lived in Colorado since I was 7 and had never been on this train! They have all sorts of themed runs (Oktoberfest, Dinner trains, Big Horn Sheep Festival…) and I highly recommend you try it you come out Colorado way. We took the “Santa’s North Pole” adventure. This week’s guest is Deon Gordon--if you’re civic minded and under 40 you probably know Deon. If you’re over 40 and civic minded you’ve probably heard of Deon, even if you don’t know him personally. Deon is one Birmingham’s champions and just an all-around super nice guy. In March 2015, Deon assumed the role of director of business development for REV Birmingham. Deon was one of the first four individuals I reached out to when I began working on the show. We had everything scheduled for him to be guest #2, but then a series of scheduling snafus led to rescheduling and it wasn't until early August that we were finally able to connect for a conversation. We ended up meeting at 7 a.m. to get the interview onto our calendars! Authenticity and local culture are two of the necessary ingredients for a successful 21st century city. Deon believes Birmingham has finally begun to tell its own story of authenticity, beginning with the culinary and food scene. We talk about some of Deon's favorite Birmingham people, places and things--like Railroad Park, Gip's Place and Chez FonFon.
