As data center industry booms, an English village becomes a battleground

Originally built to store crops from peasant farmers, the tithe barn on the edge of the English village of Abbots Langley was converted into homes that preserve its centuries of history. Now, its residents are fighting to stop a development next door that represents the future. A proposal to build a data center on a field across the road was rejected by local authorities amid fierce opposition from villagers. But it's getting a second chance from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government, which is pursuing reforms to boost economic growth following the Labour Party's election victory in July. Residents of Abbots Langley, 18 miles (30 kilometers) northwest of London, worry the facility will strain local resources and create noise and traffic that damages the character of the quiet village, which is home to just over 20,000 people. As the artificial intelligence boom fuels demand for cloud-based computing from server farms around the world, such projects are pitting business considerations, national priorities, and local interests against each other. The projects are controversial because the data centers would be built on “green belt” land, which has been set aside to prevent urbanization. Britain's Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner wants to tap the green belt for development, saying much of it is low quality. Not everyone in the village is opposed. Retiree Bryan Power says he would welcome the data center, believing it would benefit the area in a similar way as another big project on the other side of the village, the Warner Bros.' Studio Tour featuring a Harry Potter exhibition. “It'll bring some jobs, whatever. It'll be good. Yeah. No problem. Because if it doesn't come, it'll go somewhere else,” said Power, 56. One of the biggest concerns about data centers is their environmental impact, especially the huge amounts of electricity they need. Greystoke, the company behind the Abbots Langley center, says the facility will draw 96 megawatts of “IT load.” But James Felstead, director of a renewable energy company, said the area's power grid wouldn't be able to handle so much extra demand. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Patricia Highsmith's novel The Talented Mr. Ripley follows a young man named Tom, whose deep-seated jealousy and ambition leads him down a very dark path. He wants the jet-set lifestyle his trust-fund friends are living, and he sets out to get it using his intelligence and skill at deception. Tom Ripley is a pretty realistic depiction of a psychopath. To get close to the wealthy people he envies, he puts on a convincing mask of helpful friendliness. But underneath, he's scheming with every breath—biding his time. And no one is safe around him. Join us for the story of a real-life Mr. Ripley, a man who was good at being charming, but bad at being good. A man who left one person dead, one heartbroken and defrauded, and a pretty little town in shock. There is no doubt that the UK is a nation of curry lovers, curry addicts even, with many of our best, and biggest nights out happening in Indian restaurants.   They are a huge player in the UK food industry. Estimates vary, but one trade group suggests curry houses employ 100,000 people and have annual sales of £4.2 billion.  And that's not even counting supermarket sales, recipe book sales, and so on.    The impact on our food culture is immense. And the UK is not alone. In so many parts of the world, there's a big curry culture. Whether you're sitting under palm trees in Durban, or on a night out in Glasgow, you're part of a global curry scene. And with this global spread comes a fascinating history, bringing together centuries of trade, immigration, colonisation and culinary innovation. But how do you define a curry? Why has this amalgamation of cuisines become so popular? And what does the future hold? Listen to the full episode to find out why the British in particular have fallen in love with curry, how curry powder first emerged, and how curry has travelled around the world and influenced so many dishes. What is with the human family's fascination with MONSTERS and supernatural creatures? We try to unpack that perennial question and topic of interest in Episode 45 of America's favorite double-barreled books and reading podcast, The Book XChange. The Brothers Lovell reach deep back into the past with classics like "Frankenstein" and "Beowulf," but also mention some of our favorite modern-day contributions to the conversation. Along the way we talk about how monsters reflect darker parts of the human psyche, why the line between "man" and "monster" is sometimes blurry, and the astounding imagination/erudition of a 19-year-old girl. Though this topic may not be for everyone, those who appreciate a good monster tale will find a feast here that they can really sink their claws, tentacles, or teeth into. Nottingham is quite famous for Sherwood forest, where Robin hood was supposed to live and as a child, I spent some of my time in Sherwood Forest playing.I live in a village and it's actually a mining village with about 1,000 or 1,500 inhabitants. There's really not very much to do there. There's a shop and a post office, a school, and my mom teach at the school.I did actually live in Edinburgh for one year and that was quite different from life in my village because there was so much more to do and there were so many more people and there was so much more traffic, but I think actually I prefer living in a village because, well, if you want to go out to the shops, if you want to go to the cinema, you can go to the nearest town, or to the nearest city, but you can always escape city life and you can always go back to where it's quiet and more peaceful and where everybody knows each other, but if you live in the city you can't really escape it, and I don't really like the noise of the city so I think I will probably live in a village for the rest of my life.
