Jackson State vs Alabama A&M showed a divide between the 2. The NCAA HBCU rankings reinforces how tight the SWAC West with Southern, Grambling, Alcorn, & Prairie View A&M. Benedict College finally played a close game against Miles College. Jackson State vs Alabama A&M showed a divide between the 2. AAMU isn't one of the top teams in the SWAC East. This week marks the return of Michael Keaton to the big screen as Batman in The Flash. So I thought it was an opportune time to revisit Batman (1989) with Blake Scott Ball. This is a large episode--the longest we've released yet, and for good measure. We get into why Batman is a necessary addition to the superhero pantheon, what happens if Gotham is in Mississippi, and finally, we rank all of the Batmen. This episode is so much fun.About our guest:Dr. Blake Scott Ball joined the Huntingdon faculty in the fall of 2017 after completing his doctoral degree. He has previously taught as an assistant professor at Miles College, as an adjunct professor at the University of North Alabama, and as an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama. He served as assistant director for the New Summersell Center Public History Initiative at the University of Alabama, and as a graduate assistant for the Alabama Historical Association. An avid writer, he served as editor for the Southern Historian graduate history journal and as a contributor and assistant editor for The Historian behind the History, a collection of oral stories documenting historians' graduate training and insights into the historical profession, published by the University of Alabama Press in 2014. His book, “Charlie Brown's America: The Popular Politics of Peanuts,” was published by Oxford University Press in 2021. You can find him on twitter at @bsb1945

It is Monday on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show and unfortunately we have to talk about the multiple mass shootings over the weekend. The latest mass shooting happened at a mall in Allen, TX where the gunman, Mauricio Garcia, was shot by an off duty police officer. NASA has researched the perfect time for a nap. The best amount of time for a nap to stay productive is twenty-six minutes. So this weekend there was the Lovers & Friends Festival and there was so much going on. Da Brat performed at the Lovers & Friends Festival along with JD. There was also a situation with Chris Brown and Usher. A rumor went out that Usher was beat up by Chris Brown and his entourage because Usher was trying to defuse an altercation between Chris Brown and Teyana Taylor. Da Brat, who was there, said Usher did not get beat up. That is a lie. Rickey Smiley was the commencement speaker at Miles College, a HBCU in Birmingham, AL. Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang are some of the most recognizable characters in American pop culture. From Snoopy's doghouse to Linus's blanket to Lucy's perpetual football prank, the scenes from this iconic comic strip are imprinted in the memories of many Americans even today, more than 70 years after the strip's debut. However, behind the lemonade stand, amateur psychiatric help, and baseball shenanigans, Charles Schultz placed underlying social commentary on the state of American politics and society. While many people praised Peanuts for its supposedly apolitical nature, Schulz used Peanuts to guide American households through critical issues, including the Cold War, integration, church-state relations, and more. Our conversation partner this week Dr. Blake Ball, author of Charlie Brown's America: The Popular Politics of Peanuts. Blake Ball is a historian of American politics, society, and popular culture in the 20th century. After receiving his doctorate in history from the University of Alabama, he taught at Miles College, the University of North Alabama, and the University of Alabama. Currently, Dr. Ball teaches history at Huntingdon College, where he also chairs the History and Political Science departments.Follow him on Twitter @bsb1945.

Grambling hasn't allowed media at their spring practices to keep out distractions and allow everyone to focus on the season. That means the spring game will be the first time the media has seen the team since the first day of practice. That lack of information has me even more intrigued on what they'll look like. Alabama A&M has 3 potential replacements for Aqeel Glass: Xavier Lankford, Quincy Casey, and Jarren Williams. Lankford has been there the longest, Casey has played games in the SWAC for JSU, and Williams was the leading passer for Miami in 2019. Miles College baseball is on a 13 game win streak. They absolutely obliterated Benedict College in the last series. They've found a lot of success batting especially with home runs. RAT ON Rat on Rat on. My guest is not himself these days because if he was he would be settling in to the latter stages of life, winding down and having his larger family contingent pick up where he left off. But that's not how this chapter is being written. My guest today is performing at a prolific clip criss crossing the country in an effort to be a link in the chain. It could be doing the Hickey Burr with Cleveland Eaton raising money for Miles College in Alabama or any black college that supports education. It could be spoofing Barry White or James Brown while Melvin Wah Wah Ragin lays down those whammy bar hits. But really my guest continues on in this hosts mind because he still wants people to find their true nature, go towards their strengths and be fearless because my guest is fearless. He is a believer in humanity and helping those get ahead, thinking on the spot during the Original Jam Sessions with Quincy Jones and Ray Brown locking that groove with Monty Alexander. Or maybe it was the time when Bobbye Porter Hall was living @ home with her mother in Detroit when my guest invited her out to Vegas and eventually LA to open up for him. It's the humanity shown to him back when he was slinging drinks @ a local Philly Bar during the burgeoning Folk Scene and to this day my guest is still showing up at the Newport Folk Festival doing renditions of the Car Song..... He developed his comedy chops around the magical hard bop of the times....flutin the blues with James Moody, playing Bags Groove with Milt Jackson or bebopin with Dizzy, Eddie Bongo Brown and Mary Lou Williams. He pushed people out of their comfort zone to get the most out of them. Like the Latin cat Johnny Pacheco or the Organ grinding Richard Groove Holmes who showed up on the comedy skits and sit coms. Charles Lloyd called my show "a search of inner life." Dozens of musicians have told me that I changed their life because I rediscovered relic vinyl they were on, that they themselves had given up on as little more than a moment in time. For them to come around to the notion that their music put me on my trip is a revelation. A Love Supreme. Listen to Frank Dukes discuss the Selective Buying Campaign, a tactic championed and organized by local college students and administrators in Birmingham in the early 1960s.
Joe Dickson was born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1933. When he was five years old, his widowed mother brought her five children to Birmingham to live with family in Fairfield. After high school and military service, Dickson returned home and enrolled in Miles College in 1955. Later he received a law degree from Howard University, served as an advisor on Minority Affairs to Alabama Governor Guy Hunt, and bought the Birmingham World newspaper. A second-generation pastor, Reverend Calvin Woods was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1933 and educated at Parker High School and Birmingham Baptist Bible College. He also graduated from Miles College and engaged in studies at other institutions. When the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights was founded in 1956, Woods was already known for his beliefs. He spoke out from the pulpit on the unconstitutional ity of segregation laws. Listen to Reverend Woods discuss that incident and his general role in the Birmingham Movement.
Dr. Elizabeth Hayes Fitts was born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1943, but grew up in Birmingham.
