Ohio Death Metal going in on 2000s Emo? Seems like our kind of thing. We've got Ian of Hanging Fortress, Holy Coast, and Settle The Sky here to talk about the 2000s band ever, Further Seems Forever. First in line is current events: The No Pressure/Enervate/Instill/Big Laugh/Pain Of Truth gig. Regulate/Jon Markson. Meka, Hu-Mid. Sunny Day Real Estate power outages. Furnace Fest: Dying Wish, Sick Of It All, Elliott, Poison The Well, and Strike Anywhere. Escuela Grind. High Vis. Glitterer. Further Seems Forever navigated a chaotic series of lineup changes over the course of the early 2000s to churn out some really good records and some really solid tracks on the records that weren't as complete. Their adjacency to the Christian Hardcore world gave them an exceptional opportunity to expose big audiences to their unique brand of luxuriously composed Emo-Indie crossover. Their records were backdrops for some of the finest work done by vocalists from some of the more disparate corners of Emo, and while they are very much a Bands' Band, their music is held fondly in the hearts of true heads across the scene. While the focus has been on Eastern Ukraine and the "new phase" of the Russian invasion to capture territory in that region, there was a stark reminder today that Russia retains the ability to strike anywhere in Ukraine. Two big explosions rocked central Kyiv just after the U-N Secretary-General met with Ukraine's president. One person of several killed was a Radio Free Europe journalist. There was another person of note killed in Ukraine recently: the first American, who traveled there to fight the Russians, was killed in action. He was a 22-year-old Marine Corps veteran.......who leaves behind a wife and 7-month-old baby.Meanwhile the Russians continue their efforts to push forward and seize more land in the Donbas region. Formed in 2006, Still Insane is a Punk Rock band from Quebec City. Their goal is simple: to play fast, to play loud, and to play everywhere. In 2009, the band released their first EP Ready to Crash and then released their first LP Never an Off three years later in December 2012. Thanks to the band's style which draws its inspiration from the ‘90s Californian Skatepunk wave, the album was greatly received throughout both the local and international scenes, granting the band excellent reviews from everywhere around the world. In 2017, the band came back strong with a new EP called Friends & Family released through Thousand Islands Records in America and Melodic Punk Style Record in Europe. Critics were enthusiastic once more. Since, Still Insane had the opportunity to play at various large-scale events and festivals such as Festivent, Pouzza Fest, Envol & Macadam, Music 4 Cancer, and more. These shows performed around the Province of Quebec provided the band the opportunity to share the scene with the biggest names from the punk rock circuit such as NOFX, Bad Religion, Good Riddance, Anti-Flag, Millencolin, Pennywise, Face to Face, Pulley, Cigar, A Wilhelm Scream, Guttermouth, Strike Anywhere, The Queers, Gob, as well as with many bands from the local scene. Entering its 15th year, Still Insane has no borders and will hopefully play soon in Europe and even South America. The band is now getting ready to unleash a new EP in February 2022. In the season five finale—the 30th episode overall (a landmark?), and the sixth episode this time around, Kevin welcomes illustrious guest Anika Pyle to the virtual building. The two talk about the album, remaining creative during a fucking pandemic, vegan food, and the gender politics of pop music. We have a bit of a big deal popping in this week. It's Thomas Barnett, vocalist and main man from Strike Anywhere. We chart the history of the band, the inspiration behind some of their lyrics and bumping into someone you know in bloody London BY ACCIDENT! It's really interesting stuff. Additional tunes this week come from the The Lippies, Shackleford, Spring Moods and The Stains.
80 episodes! Wow! Important milestone requires an important guest and we have one. Brian McTernan joins us this week. As a musician and producer, Brian has influenced & shaped the punk & hardcore scene. After fronting legendary hardcore band Battery, his career then shifted into production. His name is synonymous with landmark records from Texas Is The Reason, Cave In, The Explosion, Hot Water Music, Strike Anywhere...and that's the tip of the iceberg. Brian's new band, Be Well, ends up being a gear shifting element in the conversation. We talk a great deal about mental health as it's a driving narrative to Be Well's music. This is a really powerful, uplifting conversation and we think you're really going to enjoy it. Keep an eye out for Be Well tour dates by following them on Instagram: @bewellhc And follow Brian at: @saladydaysstudio

Tony Pence comes on the show for a rollicking discussion about his time touring with Strike Anywhere, Cross My Heart, playing in Deep Sleep/ Never Enough, Italian Police Corruption, being a good but unpro Roadie (which just meant he was a killer fan), How Wikipedia needs to check itself before it wrecks itself, getting paid in a coupon and the single grossest story Pat Martin and I have ever heard.
I met Thomas Barnett around 1993, when he was the singer for the band Inquisition. As a young punk here in Richmond, inquisition showed a path for me and my friends, that was both inspiring and empowering, both in their content and in operation. Thomas had a clear love for both people, and punk rock. And it came through so clearly. At any show, you could find him, talking with folks in the crowd, regardless of if he was there play. And over the years, managed to keep those loves kindled, and apply them to new bands, Strike Anywhere, Great Collapse, as well as to new generations of punk rock. This interview, doesn't take the normal form of a various things interview. Usually, it is me highlighting someone else. But with Thomas and his own way, he wanted to talk about me too. Which in itself, just goes to show what kind of person Thomas really is. I think to him, music, punk rock, is a dialogue. Just like any community should be. We talked for a bit, so there are a couple interludes. But it was an amazing conversation, covering everything from the way we approach music, to Black Lives Matter, the Pandemic, Antifa, and the hope and optimism we have, for both human beings, and punk rock.

Jay Maas is a producer, mixer, engineer, entrepreneur and musician and his work has been a big influence and inspiration for me over the years. He's worked with bands like Have Heart, Bane, Counterparts, State Champs, The Story So Far, Verse, Propagandhi, Somos, No Trigger, Polar Bear Club, Title Fight, Carpathian, Strike Anywhere, Drug Church, Make Do And Mend, the list goes on and on and on...He was also a founding member and main songwriter of Defeater until he left the band a couple of years back.Jay has his signature drum samples, he's built an AI-based online mastering platform (maastr.io), he's mentoring up and coming engineers, he's the face of pro audio for reverb.com, and recently started working with Waves Audio. Oh, and he's a proud dad and husband, of course! How is one person able to do all of that? How did Jay get there? Where's the connection between science, art, entrepreneurship, punk and DIY-ethic? What's the secret behind creating art that resonates or building successful products? And what exactly is that AI-thing that Jay built?Find out by listening to this episode! Bil Lepp describes various activities with strike anywhere matches that he used as a kid and the dangers involved. You'll love hearing from Uncle Deebo, Skeeter, and the rest of Bil's cast of characters -- inhabitants of Halfdollar, West Virginia.

Today on the podcast we welcome Thomas Barnett from Strike Anywhere. A legend in the punk scene and someone that I’ve been following since 1999 when I first heard Strike Anywhere and their brand of political punk from Richmond, VA. When Thomas from Strike Anywhere first jumped on the phone with me said he was shy and not really a good talker. Well, he was completely wrong and I just sat back for most of this interview and listened to the master who has been going to shows since the 80s. he talked about learning how to put on shows at a barn on the outskirts of Richmond Virginia, and spoke passionately about what first bands he saw that shaped his life and his previous band Inquisition. I did a lot of editing myself out, yes, even the giggles. It was funny thought listening back to this interview and going, “yea don’t need to hear me talk there.” I was absolutely honored to have someone like Thomas take time to chat about the history of the “scene” in quotes and what shapes the scene and yourself. We of course talk about emo, don’t worry, but as you know, my love of hardcore runs deep so to hear him talk about the Richmond, Virginia scene, his life now and the band Strike Anywhere is still around! Their most recent album is out on Pure Noise Records now called “Nightmares of the West.” Definitely go check that out and as we all know and you’ve heard me preach, emo has many tentacles and a long history. A big part of the history that isn’t talked about enough is hardcore and punk. Hardcore intersects with emo so much that having Thomas on to school me on the history was amazing to experience.

A Wilhelm Scream is a melodic hardcore band from New Bedford, Massachusetts formed in 1999. Many people have referenced Strung Out, Hot Water Music, Propagandhi, and Strike Anywhere as the band's similar artists. Their name is a reference to the Wilhelm scream, a famous stock sound effect that is mainly used in films. The band previously went by the names Koen, Adam's Crack, and Smackin' Isaiah, though the last was the only name to be used in any major releases. "The reason for the name changes from Koen to Smackin' Isaiah, then to A Wilhelm Scream was really a matter of them adding new members, and progressing/maturing as a band". I reached out to Nuno and this is what we talk about: His love of hockey Playing FEST His love of musicals Why Monday’s are always his day off All About Records Transitioning to A Wilhelm Scream Rob Dobi doing their artwork Nitro Records Keeping in touch with past members Lynn, Massachusetts And a ton more Check out my webcomic - dailyBred Hire me to design or animate your content - drive80.com If you’d like to support the podcast you can donate as little as $1 a month through Patreon.

Hudson Yards opens Friday, March 15th, with the public being able to visit the new shopping mall and food court, the massive sculpture of stairs (tentatively) called the Vessel History Hudson Yards is a unique development. Other areas in Manhattan may change names, like the Lower East Side splitting to become the East Village, and new areas may be built, like Battery Park City, but Hudson Yards will be the last neighborhood to grow from previously undeveloped land. The site has been a railyard since the turn of the last century and had been the target of many developers over the years, but only recently did plans come together to build the largest private real estate development in the United States on top of the block-long open area of train tracks. A cutaway model shows the multiple layers at the site: Amtrak and NJ Transit trains at the deepest level in the Hudson Tunnel, 30 tracks of LIRR storage just below ground level, then an elevated platform constructed over the tracks that contains machinery to run the complex, support structures drilled into the bedrock, and the street-level parks and building entrances. If you take the new 7 Train extension to Hudson Yards, you'll emerge from even deeper under the complex since the new station is 125 feet below street level, making it one of the deepest in the subway system. The part of the development opening now is really only half of what will ultimately rise from the rail yards. This section, east of Eleventh Ave, was developed first, but more residential towers and open public space will be added in the next phase west of Eleventh. In this episode we'll learn about a few new features opening this weekend in this new neighborhood. Stores Shopping at Hudson Yards will be pretty similar to the retail space that has opened at the new World Trade Center complex, with high-priced fashion brands filling most of the space. A multi-story Neiman Marcus will anchor the shopping areas, with stores like Louis Vuitton, Coach, and Zara showing up along the mall's corridors and stores from luxury watchmakers Patek Philippe, Rolex, and Piaget. Visit B3ta on the second floor where shoppers have the ability to try out products that are usually ordered online and produced by smaller companies that can't afford to open an entire storefront. The Shed The structure sitting along the High Line that looks like an inflatable ice cube is the art, performance, and event space at Hudson Yards, called The Shed. It's a transforming building with sliding panels and a rolling canopy that can host a variety of events. There's a very cool video animation on the Hudson Yards site showing how the Shed transforms to change from an indoor venue for concerts and art to an open-air plaza for watching movies, and the Shed will even announce on social media when it will be transforming the building for a new event, so you'll have advance notice if you want to stop by watch the four-story structure move. The Shed will be opening in early April with a five-night concert series. The Vessel The Vessel sculpture has fast become one of the most recognizable features of Hudson Yards. 150 feet tall with 154 interconnected stairways, visitors can climb onto dozens of observation platforms and view Hudson Yards from multiple directions. It's sure to become a favorite of photographers. The name may be "The Vessel" for now, but Hudson Yards will be accepting suggestions for a more-fitting name for the sculpture. During the opening ceremony where Big Bird helped Anderson Cooper officially open the Vessel to visitors, Big Bird compared the sculpture to his own Sesame Street bird nest, which is an interlocking nest of brown branches. Visiting the sculpture currently requires making a free reservation, but it's unclear if this will continue into the future or if it's only intended to keep crowd numbers low during ongoing construction at Hudson Yards. If you take any innovative photos of the Vessel or have a suggestion on a better name than "The Vessel", send them in to A Great Big City on social media! Observation Deck If you're longing for a higher vantage point, make your reservation for The Edge, an observation deck at Hudson Yards that will become the highest public balcony in the city. Jutting out to the southeast corner from 30 Hudson Yards, the triangle-shaped deck will offer a variety of views across the city and the Hudson River, all from a height of 1,100 feet. The glass walls surrounding the observation deck will lean outwards at the point of the triangle, giving daredevils an opportunity to lean forward and look straight down from a point 65 feet away from the building. The deck won't open as part of the Hudson Yards grand opening, but you can reserve a spot on the list to be one of the first visitors when it does open. The Future It may look out of place at the moment, but just like the World Trade Center complex, Hudson Yards will begin to blend in with the New York around it as construction is finished and more open spaces are added. The plaza is open to visitors and will have wifi access, so it may prove popular as a place to take a rest in Hell's Kitchen, which otherwise had a limited amount of public green space. The upcoming parkland along the High Line and the Hudson River will add a much-needed boost to an area where pedestrians were either relegated to a narrow sidewalk next to the highway and the only was the concrete rear wall of the Javits Center. Much like the open lawns along the Hudson in Battery Park City, the green space at Hudson Yards will likely prove to be a popular space for watching the sunset or having an afternoon picnic, and will really come to life when attendees from various Javits Center conventions explore the new spaces instead of trying to catch a cab out of the area. Welcome to the neighborhood, Hudson Yards! 5 years ago on March 12, 2014 — A natural gas explosion levels two five-story buildings on Park Avenue 3 years ago on March 12, 2016 — 84-foot tugboat 'The Specialist' sinks after colliding with a barge near the Tappan Zee Bridge Park of the day Davidson Playground — Morris Heights in The Bronx — Little is known about Oliver Mathias Davidson for whom this playground and the adjacent Davidson Avenue are named. Davidson served as Chief Engineer of Streets from 1867 to 1872, and at one time owned land in Fordham. The small neighborhood park contains playground equipment and many lush trees providing shade. The Queens Botanical Garden will be holding a Backyard Composting Workshop on Saturday, March 16th where you can learn what goes in a compost bin, how to maintain it properly, and how to use the compost after it has had time to develop. Registration is required, but the event is free. Call (718) 886-3800 for more info. Se ligue em algumas bandas que ele selecionou: Shelter, Blink 182, Strung Out, Pennywise, Face to Face, All, Millencolin, Strike Anywhere, faça o download agora. With two well-received collections of poems and a fearless collection of essays, Canadian investigative journalist, essayist and poet, Michael Lista, was welcomed to Trent University as the 2017 Margaret Laurence fellow. His talk Outside the Whale: Literature and the Left in the Age of Trump focused primarily on the role the literary left will play in a new political climate of right-winged politics and nationalism. Mr. Lista has worked as a book columnist for The National Post, and as the poetry editor of The Walrus. He is the author of three books: the poetry volumes Bloom and The Scarborough, and Strike Anywhere, a collection of his writing about literature, television and culture. His essays and investigative stories have appeared in The Atlantic, Slate, Toronto Life, The Walrus, Canadaland, and elsewhere. From the School of the Study of Canada: He’s been a book columnist and noted poet and during his visit at Trent University, Michael Lista was ready to defend his craft – and the literary left – particularly at a time when the political elite seems on the verge of stepping into the ring at the slightest comment. On February 9, 2017, speaking to a crowd at Traill College’s Bagnani Hall, he shared his own experiences in writing both ahead of, and following the U.S. election. Throughout his address, Mr. Lista painted a picture of struggles facing literary writers who have, by and large, been described as left leaning. Now, he suggests, they are under fire much in the way they held the right to the fire for so long. He says, “It has resulted in a new, drawn-out battle, pitting literary writers against one another. It’s taken the focus, to some extent, off those who would normally be the target of the writers.” This year, Mr. Lista has been named writer-in-residence, filling a fellowship established in 1988 as a tribute to and in memory of Margaret Laurence, Trent University’s fourth chancellor. It is co-administered by Department of English Literature and Canadian Studies Program and brings promising writers who are in the early stages of their careers to Trent University. Mr. Lista has worked as a book columnist for the National Post, and as the poetry editor of The Walrus. He is also the author of three books and his essays and investigative stories have appeared in The Atlantic, Slate, Toronto Life, Canadaland, and numerous other publications. Kate Taylor, an English major at Trent, says she was compelled to take in the address after Mr. Lista spoke to her advanced creative writing class earlier in the day. “It’s very interesting to hear a writer read their own work and describe the process and annotations they give to their own work that you don’t get when you read it on a website,” she says.

This is from August 19th, 2014I (Matt) found myself in St. Louis for a business trip and staying in a hotel staffed nearly entirely by Ferguson residents. Eventually I ended up right at the McDonald’s and Ferguson Market where, as of the writing of this post, much violence has occurred.I didn’t see any tanks or tear gas as I was there during the middle of the day and things were comparatively tame.I’m not a journalist. What is in this episode are just my thoughts and experiences along with the thoughts of some Ferguson locals. This podcast has never really been about news, comics or otherwise. This is no different (though I did find out some very important things that aren’t being reported by the media, Left or Right). Take this for what it is.Herein also are some pictures and video I took.“When they broke down the doorand put their guns in the face of your wife and child, and as they pinned you to the floordid you say “Officer, I am not resisting you. “-Strike Anywhere
Ryan started acting at the young age of 5 years, and has been performing ever since. He played drums in a female-fronted political punk band called Overated for 9-years, before shooting his first full-length film, "Thankskilling". Overated toured all over the Midwest, appearing with bands such as The Riverboat Gamblers, The Misfits, Killola, Strike Anywhere, and many more (see website). During that time, Ryan had a huge interest in film, attending Ohio University in 2005, right after high school, for a short amount of time, working as a sound tech for various college projects. One in particular, called "Pinned", directed by Patrick Norman, was favored by Ryan. He is residing in Columbus, OH where he runs his record label, REF Records, and performs as a nerd-core hip-hop artist that the locals know as "Huge Euge". Eno Metzo from The Awful Gamer joins Paul as they talk to Ryan Francis, known by many in the B-Rated indie horror fandom as "Darren the Nerd" from ThanksKilling and Huge Euge to his local nerdcore hip-hop fans. We talk about how great "shitty" indie horror can be, Ryan's upcoming projects (including something involving becoming a juggalo) and even Final Fantasy VII!
