Generating long-form 44.1kHz stereo audio from text prompts can be computationally demanding. Further, most previous works do not tackle that music and sound effects naturally vary in their duration. Our research focuses on the efficient generation of long-form, variable-length stereo music and sounds at 44.1kHz using text prompts with a generative model. Stable Audio is based on latent diffusion, with its latent defined by a fully-convolutional variational autoencoder. It is conditioned on text prompts as well as timing embeddings, allowing for fine control over both the content and length of the generated music and sounds. Stable Audio is capable of rendering stereo signals of up to 95 sec at 44.1kHz in 8 sec on an A100 GPU. Despite its compute efficiency and fast inference, it is one of the best in two public text-to-music and -audio benchmarks and, differently from state-of-the-art models, can generate music with structure and stereo sounds. 2024: Zach Evans, CJ Carr, Josiah Taylor, Scott H. This week a listener asks if his separates from the 80s are as good as his more modern home theater equipment. We also read your emails and look at the week's news. News: YouTube TV is Reportedly The Only Live TV Provider To Add Subscribers In The 2nd Quarter of 2023 (Cable TV or Streaming) 75% of Smart TV Owners Use Non-TV Viewing Functions LG Unveils New ‘Magnit' Micro LED Screen YouTube offers new billing options for NFL package Other: Best Ever Audiophile Speakers, for REAL! Soundbar Mouts from Monoprice.com Vintage vs Modern Gear We received the following email from Chris asking us to take a look at Vintage vs Modern Gear: In your latest episode, you were discussing receivers. And I got to thinking: Are the receivers of today drastically better than the component stereo systems of the 80s? So if today, you put a component system from the 80s in the same environment as a receiver from the 2020s, could you tell the difference? We have seen the resurgence of the turntable, will we also see the resurgence of the component stereo? Separate tuner, amp, equalizer, etc. Can you explain a little in layman's terms the way the music is delivered today via compression and frequency reduction (Spotify, XM, Apple Music, etc)? Meaning does the vinyl LP for example, go from -20 kHz to +140 kHz whereas streaming compresses to -10 kHz to +80 kHz, so you could get a better audio experience with vinyl? Vintage Gear Size and Weight - Vintage amplifiers are heavy by today's standards. In their heyday, owning one that weighed fifty to one hundred pounds wasn't unheard of. A majority of that weight came from the massive transformers housed inside. Those large transformers let the amplifier drive demanding speakers with ease and let the system run at a higher current. Most vintage receivers used Class A/B amps, which were more efficient and ran cooler than their Class A counterparts. Power - During the "power wars" of the '70s and '80s, manufacturers kept increasing how much power their amps could output, really pushing the limits of the amplifier technology of the time. For example, the Pioneer SX-1980 from 1978 cranked out an astonishing 270 watts per channel. Electronics - a majority of amps were hardwired and didn't have an over-reliance on a circuit board, meaning they were more user serviceable if you knew what you were doing, and often cheaper to fix if you didn't. New Gear Performance - Class A/B amps sound better today than ever, given the significant improvements in transformer technology and component circuitry. Modern amplifiers have less distortion than older ones, and you get better performance for a lot less money. It's a digital world - With modern amplifiers and receivers, you're gaining modern connections. From HDMIs to optical and coaxial connections, having digital inputs on your amplifier means you can hook up your TV, gaming consoles, CD player, and more. The sound quality is clearer and more precise. You can also use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and an app-based interface to stream your music for extra convenience. Which one sounds better? Ready for our non-answer? It depends. There are certainly receivers from the 70s and 80s that sound better than receivers built today. But you are talking about the high end products. For example, the classic Pioneer SX1980 is rated at 0.03% THD and back in 1980, it would cost you $1,295 to pick one up. That's about $5,450 in today's dollars. Yamaha's A-S501 is rated at 0.019% THD, and can be had for $549. Vinyl vs Digital Frequency response - Both can reproduce sound that is beyond what a human can hear. It comes down to how the digital music is sampled and in some cases compressed. Low quality mp3 and AAC files throw away much of the recording so you are not getting all of the original. Let's put that aside because none of us listen to low quality music. There is a debate, however, about high quality mp3 and AAC (anything greater than 256Kbps sampled at 44.1KHz) vs lossless. I personally can't hear the difference and have done many blind A/B tests with those who claim that they can hear the difference only to conclude that none of my self proclaimed audiophile friends can hear the difference either. I won't say that no one can hear the difference reliably, but I will say that the number of those who can is very small. When it comes to vinyl it's a preference for the sound. I prefer the clean sound of high quality digital. It's easy to take my entire library with me everywhere I go. Braden loves his vinyl. It's warmer and more nostalgic. One is not better than the other, it's a personal preference. I am happy that I can now have an audio experience that was only available to people with deep pockets back in the 80s. Today, everyone can have a system that my 20 year old self only dreamed about. And you can take it on the go!

We look at the new Puro BT2200 Plus, see more about the product on their website here. Puro BT2200 Plus reviewed This product seems to be aimed at kids, but we gave it to a variety of our testers, preteens, teens and oldies, (can we say that?) those in their later decades also. Overall we got a good response from all of them about the product. One of the teens felt the headphones were a little small, and it would perhaps be useful if the headband, ie the part that sits on top of your head, could expand. That said the earphones were comfortable to use and all testers enjoyed using the product. Another very positive thing about the headphones is that they are both bluetooth and also come with three different cable options too. This should ensure that this device is pretty much ready to go straight out of the box. We had no issues firing it up and it just worked straight away and with a nice, deep, lush sound. The volume limited design aspect seems smart and a good thing for a child related product, though you can still go quite loud, certainly not something that would get in the way of you using it in a happy and positive way. We liked the Puro BT2200 Plus, and it's pricing is not too expensive either. It could be a good birthday present for a younger user. Worth playing around with. On episode 341 of the BSP I talk more about youtube's attempt to break into podcasting. Since episode 340, I learned that this entire announcement has to do with youtube videos being marked as podcasts, and a viewer will now be able to listen to that video in the background while using the youtube music app. Note: I screwed the audio up big time. I started a new Reaper session and it reverted to 24-bit 44.1kHz. So I lost the 32-bit float benefit, and I didn't record in the standard 48kHz. HECK IT ALL! This week we have three features provided by our listeners. Scott Hawk has thoughts on why CDs were considered superior to albums in the early 80s. John Lyman compares Records vs Airplay and Digital lossless and Tim Klevar reviews the Airfly Bluetooth dongle and the Sony Mark V headphones. Plus we have listener emails and news. NBC Could Give Third Hour Of Nightly Primetime Back To Local Affiliates Samsung, Prime Video to Offer 8K Content From ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' Report: Budget-friendly Samsung displays on the horizon CD's Were Universally Recognized as Superior to Albums in the 1980s By Scott Hawk Back in 1985, cassettes were outselling records and you probably remember how terrible they were. Cheap housings made them wobbly inside your player. Cheap tape material gunked up the heads and reels of your cassette deck with soot. They used Dolby B or no noise reduction. All this got worse if you kept them in your car. For many people, records were not much better. Few people cleaned their records so pops, hisses and cracks were common. Plus, the record undergoes wear with each play since the needle is physically touching the grooves. Plus, the stylus would also exhibit wear, reducing its ability to track the grooves on the record. A stylus starts off with a nice point but gets rounder over time. So, play a record 300 times and the wear on the stylus and record obviously effects the sound quality. Most turntables were belt driven and the belts had been stretched, dried out or slipping which caused all sorts of wow & flutter. Now, enter the CD. Even though CD players were at first expensive, within a few years all CD players sounded alike. Everyone who listened to music got an upgrade. If you had a cassette tape, the new CD sounded amazing. And, if your tape was a few years old, the new CD sounded like it came from heaven. If you had a worn out record playing on a worn out turntable, you also got a major sound upgrade. And, if you listened to FM radio, you too got a huge sound upgrade. Plus, they sounded great on the first play and the 300th. CDs were also indestructible compared to tapes and records. No wonder everyone raved about digital music. So, what happened since then? Today, getting a good music experience is much simpler. Any phone with even basic headphones stream good sounding music. And, nice sounding music can even come from a bluetooth speaker. But to get music out of a turntable, you have to go through a process which has some attraction. It's certainly more of a process than using your phone. That process has some allure to it and the music will sound different. People can decide for themselves if something that sounds different is actually better. I think my own experience was not the most common. I was passionate about this as a kid. I saved up to buy a fancy direct-drive turntable, with a floating suspension and a carbon fiber tonearm. I bought a Shure cartridge, installed it myself and adjusted the tonearm, tracking pressure and tracking angle. I'd buy a new album and play it twice … once to remove any manufacturing artifacts and then again to copy it to a Hi-Bias or Metal tape with Dolby C noise reduction. I splurged on a 3-head tape deck and cleaned it (and my records) religiously. I'd only play the record again to replace the tape or make a mix tape. I was very particular in getting the tape to sound as close to the record as I could. So … a friend gets a CD player and loans it to me. I go out and buy 2 CD's … Don Fagan's Nightfly and Dire Straits (first album). Holy cow … it blew away my ears. The highs on the cymbals were stunning. The dynamic range was astonishing. The extra thump of the bass gives me chills to this day. Even after all the effort I took to get the best sound, this new technology just ran the table. Record vs Airplay and Digital lossless a Listener's Test By John Lyman With all the discussion I was curious about the difference in the following three formats: Streaming via AirPlay 2, USB to Amp streaming at highest rate vs a record. My setup for the test: M1 iMac streaming to an Airport Express (Airplay 2) - digital output into the receiver (10 Feet away) 2019 16” MacBook Pro connected to Amp using USB output set to 24 bit 192Khz Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo Turntable - connected to a Cambridge Audio phono amp Amp is a Cambridge Audio CXA-81 Speakers are Wharfdale EVO 4.2 Sub is turned off and no EQ running Using Apple Music for digital content The songs I picked were determined by the few albums I have and those that are brand new. I also chose the first song on a side of the record so I was listening to the same thing from all sources. I played about 1:30 minutes of the song. I went in the same order starting with streaming to Airplay, USB direct connect and then turntable. Songs used Elton John - Sweet Painted Lady (24 bit 44.1Khz lossless from Apple) Neil Young - Old Man (24 bit 196 Khz) Pink Floyd - Speak to Me/Breathe (24bit 96Khz) Overall I noticed the same thing Airplay had the narrowest soundstage, was the brightest sounding of all, and the instruments did not stand out as much. The horn on Sweet painted lady was not as pronounced. In the chorus of Old Man where its a higher pitch and louder - the other instruments get lost. Breathe you can't tell there are two voice at the beginning USB Connection While Painted lady was at the same stream quality I could hear a difference. The soundstage was larger and I noticed a horn that I did not in the Airplay 2. Old Man is where I really could hear the difference in the sound stage being a little wider and the instruments were clearer. When they get to chorus its not as bright as the Airplay and I could easily make out the other instruments. Breathe - I noticed there were at least two voices singing and again bigger soundstage Album - WOW this blew me away on all three songs with a much warmer sound and clean. Sweet Painted Lady had a great soundstage, the horn came out great along with the other instruments. Old Man the chorus was not as high pitched as the others and I could make out more of the background singers. Speak to Me/Breathe - this is where I was blown away. In the digital version the jump between Speak to me and Breath is very pronounced there is no ramp up to the louder music you just jump there. On the album there was a ramp up and then the wall of music hit me. Conclusion I found that the higher bit rate/more information provided did create a better sound picture filling in the holes a little better because of the additional information. I would also say the direct connection does make a difference as I noticed with Sweet Painted Lady. However, with the majority of my listening being done during the work day or streaming around the house with a non-critical ear. I will continue to use Airplay 2 because it is easy. However, for critical listening I will be using either a Mac hooked up directly or an Album with a good bourbon. Update I wanted to send an update after this weekend. I was reading an article about Open Core Legacy Patcher (OpenCore Legacy Patcher) that allows a person to install the latest Mac OS on older machines. So I went through the process of updating my 2012 Mac mini that I use as media server. This allowed me to load Monterey on that machine and take full advantage of Apple Music lossless on the machine and also Airplay to the machine from other devices. I'm streaming the music over USB to my amp as it allows full 24/192 output (digital capped out at 24/96) when direct streaming. I also received Supertramp's Even in the Quietest moments original album. This album has a song called Fool's Overture that I have been using for speaker testing since the 90's. A great song because of so many instruments and changes really puts speakers through its paces. So I listened to this song from the album and again I noticed a warmer and good sound stage. To me the bottom line is that both lossless and vinyl sound great for those dedicated music listening times. The reason I believe those two give a better sound quality is similar to streaming vs a Blu-ray Disc the more information the better the end product will be and the better the sound stage. Airfly & Sony Mark V A Listener's Review By Tim Klevar The Airfly is everything it promises to be. I bought the Duo and it allows two devices to connect. If you have cup phones and earpods, this or the Duo Pro is for you. There are two models of the Airfly: Duo and Pro. Both allow for two devices to connect. The Pro provides an “Aux in” function. The Duo is about $10 less expensive than the Pro, although neither are more than $55. Mostly, I think, cars and other things do not need this. I bought the Duo. It works well, it is “elegant” in its design and function. It only has two buttons with dots. There is a single dot and double dot button used to connect and select the devices. Pressing either button connects to the device that was paired on that button. It charges via a USB-C port and has a USB-C to USB-A cable included. It is only about 6 inches long, but enough to get from an IFE USB to the AirFly. It is pretty cool. The Sony Mark V headphones are everything they promise to be. I agree with Tom's and RTINGS analysis. While they do not come with aptX, they have the other main codecs, including LDAC. These seem to me to be better than the Bose 700's, which likely will not be upgraded until next year. On the other hand, the Mark V uses BT 5.2 and I was able to get about 40+ feet away from the source with no dropoff in quality or squeaks/pops. It was just as clear as when I was in the room. These work really well. They are not perfect. And pricey. But if you have the money, they are worth it. I believe it is better than the Bose 700s. The noise canceling is super and the sound is excellent. I do not have one of the subscriptions to try the spatial 360 stuff. The ear cups fit nicely over my normal sized ears and provide a snug fit. There are only two buttons, one to power on and one to change the noise canceling levels, of which there are about 6 or 7. I have not yet been on a plane to see about engine noise, but around the house, it is a “dark” zone when I have these on. However, I notice that sometimes when I laugh or move my jaws just so, it pauses the video/audio stream and I have to double-tap the right cup to play again (I watch one or two episodes of Hogan's Heroes or Bob Newhart to relax my mind before I go to bed). It is still pretty cool that when I take them off, the stream pauses and then resumes when I put them back on. The connection via BT was clean, and the Duke Ellington I listened to was sensational. All ambient noise in my home office was eliminated. The app is a little lame, and to get the 360 Spatial, you have to use one of 5 services, one of which is TIDAL, but the others were obscure to me (Deezer, Artist, mugs.net,, Peertracks) I particularly enjoyed being able to use the conductive touch feature to raise/lower the volume, skip ahead and such. Just a quick swipe on the left earcup was all that was needed. They also include a 3.5mm cable for a wired connection if you run out of juice, but they are supposed to last for 30 hours at full charge. A nice thing, you can get a couple of hours with a 3-5 minute charge, although with the advent of more in-seat power this is not really a “feature.” In theory you can use Aa-Lady to do things with the app, but I have not been able to figure that out yet. I also Have had issues trying to update the firmware. While I know that high-speed connectivity is coming, many do not have that and use the IFE system. This doohickey will let them use their BT headphones for which they paid a fortune.

GB2RS News Sunday the 5th of December 2021 The news headlines: New online EMF calculator from RSGB Sign /2ZE to mark Transatlantic Centenary Centenary stations in ARRL 160m Contest The RSGB has launched a new version of the Society's EMF calculator, v11d, that is now available in a new browser-based version as well as the spreadsheet version. The web browser version does not require you to have Excel or another spreadsheet on your computer. It also has several great new features to make compliance checking simpler and quicker. You can find both versions on the RSGB EMF web pages or you can go directly to the new web app via rsgb.org/emccalculator. This month marks the Centenary of the first amateur radio signals crossing the Atlantic. Signals from the USA were received by Paul Godley, 2ZE, at a specially prepared receiving setup at Ardrossan in Scotland. From the 1st to the 26th of December, all UK and Crown Dependency licensees may add the suffix /2ZE to their amateur callsign to mark the centenary. Learn more on the story at rsgb.org/transatlantic-tests. The annual ARRL 160m Contest began at 2200UTC on Friday the 3rd of December and ends at 1559UTC today, the 5th. This 42-hour CW-only contest is the most similar to the original Transatlantic Tests. The RSGB is planning to activate special callsigns to commemorate the centenary of the Tests. Stations from the UK and Crown Dependencies will use up to seven different prefixes such as G6XX, GD6XX, GI6XX, GW6XX and so on. One week later, the ARRL and the RSGB are jointly sponsoring the 160m Transatlantic Centenary QSO Party between 0200 and 0800UTC on the 12th. Stations participating will operate only on CW, trying to contact the two official callsign activations, W1AW and GB2ZE. At times the stations may listen for callers 1kHz above their transmitting frequency, to help those looking for them. They may also periodically ask for DX callers, only. Callsign and signal reports will be exchanged. The GMDX Group will award a quaich, which is a traditional Scottish drinking cup representing friendship, to the first stations in North America and the UK to complete contacts with both W1AW and GB2ZE during the QSO Party. A commemorative certificate will be available for download. Log submissions will not be required from participants. The official logs from W1AW and GB2ZE will be used to determine the winners and for certificates. For more details go to rsgb.org/transatlantic-tests. It's not too late to support December YOTA Month 2021. The RSGB has been granted the callsign GB21YOTA, for allocation to youngsters to operate throughout December. To see what operating slots are still available please look up GB21YOTA on QRZ.com. Today, the station will be operated by GM1DSK. On Monday, M0SCY takes over. Next Saturday, G0HRS will operate the station followed by G3EFX on the 12th. There is also an award programme available for the YOTA event. Work as many YOTA stations on as many bands and modes as possible and be eligible for your Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum award, all of which are issued for free. This programme promotes radio activity on the airwaves and shows that there is and will be activity in the future. Visit events.ham-yota.com for more information about the award rules. The Bath Based Distance Learning team has processed over 100 expressions of interest for their Intermediate course starting in January. Further details were published in the December RadCom. The closing date for applications is the 15th of December so if you are interested, please contact team leader Steve, G0FUW, for full details and an application form as soon as possible, via email to G0FUW@tiscali.co.uk. And now for details of rallies and events Now is the perfect time to let us know your group's rally or event plans for 2022. Email radcom@rsgb.org.uk with details and we'll publicise your event for free in RadCom, on GB2RS, and online. If you don't tell us, we can't publicise you. Now the DX news Ferdy, HB9DSP will be active as 5Z4/HB9DSP from Malindi, Kenya until the 16th of December. He will operate SSB and some FT8 on the 20, 15 and 10m bands. QSL via Logbook of The World and via his home call, with the bureau preferred. DL2SBY will be active holiday-style from the Dominican Republic until the 14th of December. He will operate CW, FT8 and possibly some SSB as HI7/DL2SBY from Punta Cana, IOTA reference NA-096 and Bayahibe, NA-096. QSL via Logbook of The World, or direct only to home call or Club Log's OQRS. He no longer uses the bureau. Harald, DF2WO will be active as XT2AW from Burkina Faso until the 20th of December. He will be operating on all bands and also via QO-100. QSL via M0OXO's OQRS and Logbook of The World. DJ6TF and DL7BO will be active as Z21A and Z22O from Harare, Zimbabwe until the 15th of December. They will operate CW, SSB, FT8 and FT4 on 160-10 metres. QSL both calls via DJ6TF. Now the Special Event news Special event station GB1002ZE will be operated by Crocodile Rock Amateur Group near Ardrossan. In addition to the radio celebrations, North Ayrshire Council have jointly created an exhibition surrounding this Centenary that will be hosted in the North Ayrshire Heritage Centre, Saltcoats. This exhibition is open until mid-December. Kilmarnock and Loudoun ARC will operate a commemorative station adjacent to the site of the original transatlantic experiment at Ardrossan. It will be on the air between 1200UTC on the 11th until 1200UTC on the 12th. The station, GS2ZE, will be used for the celebration except for the first hour of the 160m CW QSO Party and it will take part in the message relay as GB2ZE. GM2ZE is also expected to be operational on several bands from the station of Jason, GM7VSB, which is also adjacent to the site of the original Ardrossan experiment. An attempt will be made to re-enact Godley's original successful reception of transatlantic signals exactly at the same time and date as 100 years ago. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the historic Transatlantic Tests of December 1921, members of the HB4FR Amateur Radio Club will be active as HB1BCG throughout December. 1BCG was the callsign of the Connecticut station whose message crossed the Atlantic Ocean to be received in Scotland. QSL via HB9ACA. Now the contest news When operating in contests, please keep yourself and fellow amateurs safe by following relevant pandemic-related government recommendations. December is a quiet month for contests, indeed there are no RSGB HF contests at all this month. The ARRL 160m CW contest ends its 42-hour run at 1600UTC today, the 5th. Using CW only on the 160m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. W and VE stations also send their ARRL or RAC section info. During the contest, the RSGB will activate special event 1920s vintage callsigns to commemorate the transatlantic tests. Today, the 5th, sees the 144MHz AFS contest, running from 1000 to 1400UTC. Using all modes on the 2m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. On Tuesday the 144MHz FM Activity Contest runs from 1900 to 1955UTC. It is followed by the all-mode 144Hz UK Activity Contest from 2000 to 2230UTC. The exchange for both is signal report, serial number and locator. Thursday sees the all-mode 50MHz UK Activity Contest take place from 2000 to 2230UTC. The exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Next weekend the ARRL 10m contest runs from 0000UTC on the 11th to 2359UTC on the 12th. Using CW and phone, the exchange is signal report and serial number, with US and Canadian stations, also sending their State or Province code. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Friday the 3rd of December The last week was characterised by unsettled geomagnetic conditions, but a reasonable solar flux index of 92, falling to 86. Despite NOAA predicting that the Kp index would be around two, we had an excursion up to five on Tuesday. This was due to an enhanced solar wind stream containing a sector of southward Bz, which kicked up a minor, G1-class geomagnetic storm. The southward direction of the interplanetary magnetic field meant that it could more easily couple with the Earth's magnetic field, allowing solar plasma to flood it. This continued until the end of Wednesday, with the Kp index finally returning to one on Thursday morning. Last weekend was the CQ Worldwide CW contest and HF conditions were aided by a very low Kp index. This was beneficial, especially for signals going over the pole. As a result, many stations were able to put the North Pole Contest Group, KL7RA, in Alaska, into their logs on 20 metres, where their signal was reasonably free of polar flutter. Next week NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will start in the high 80s, but may tail off as the week progresses. Once again it predicts that the Kp index will be around two, but this is very dependent on there being no coronal mass ejections, which could add to the solar wind. A large coronal hole was Earth-facing on Thursday, which could possibly result in an elevated Kp index over the weekend and reduced maximum usable frequencies. Keep an eye on solarham.com for details. And finally, the darker and longer nights mean the low bands can start to come alive, so don't ignore 160, 80 and 40 metres. And now the VHF and up propagation news. Testing times for antennas during this current spell of unsettled weather, which looks as though it will stay with us through all of the coming week. This means periods of wet and windy weather will bring a hint of rain scatter at times, but effectively rules out any tropo opportunities. Once again, it will be down to the slim chance of aurora and reliable random meteor scatter to liven up VHF operating. The big Geminids meteor shower with a ZHR of 120+ is underway, but won't hit its peak until the morning of the 14th of December. Predictions show a ZHR of 150 at peak, as ZHR has shown a slight increase over the last decades. It has reached 140 to 150 in recent years. The Geminids peak is broad, and close-to-peak rates persist for several hours. Expect several days of good meteor scatter activity in the days up to the 14th and expect it to decay fairly quickly after the maximum. It's an inconvenient period for EME enthusiasts, especially on the GHz bands, with the current phase of lowest path loss coinciding with the lowest declination continuing. Perigee was last Friday, so path losses will increase as the week progresses. With Moon declination at its minimum today, Moon windows will be short and it will not get above 15 degrees elevation until Wednesday. 144MHz sky temperatures are high during the early part of the week and combined with the low elevation, VHF EME will be a noisy affair. In all, it's looking like a very good week to try some satellite operation! And that's all from the propagation team this week

"Not all distortion is horrible" is a notion many come to observe at some point along the audiophile journey. Maybe that's not the best way to put it. How about, "some distortions are less horrible than others".In past episodes of The Hifi Podcast, Darren and Duncan have talked about complex versus simple distortions, and the fact that simple circuits and simple devices distort simply. And simple distortion is much, much more tolerable to our ears.Intermodulation distortion (IMD) is a complex beast of a distortion, creating byproducts of the difference between competing frequencies. A shimmering cymbal hit with fundamentals of 9KHz and 9.1KHz for example will produce an IMD product of 100Hz. Yes, that's right - artificial bass noise created from within the amplifier, for just these two tones. Imagine what happens with real music playing! This week's episode focuses on IMD and explains why amps are the biggest culprits of this sonic bugaboo. Also in this episode, the guys answer a couple questions about system battery power and round listening rooms. The album of the week is a killer sounding new joint from perhaps the biggest name in bluegrass right now.

Alles in allem absoluter Preis-Leistungssieger! Links: @Thedreasmate @_alessionocera

The sound echoes throughout the house, reverberating off painted walls and vaulted ceilings. You feel it thrumming inside your chest, against your ribs. Ringing, ringing. Grace, Roy, and Derek rush to uncover the mysteries of McCail Manor. Some secrets, it would seem, aren’t meant to remain buried. But not everyone makes it out of the house alive. Roy plots an escape. Grace gives chase. Derek starts digging. Deep. Artwork by the amazing Samantha Kapustik. Thanks to Eli Schneider, who composed original music for this week’s episode. Amazon will launch a new location-tracking mesh network system later this year Amazon is preparing to launch an ambitious networking and location system later this year under the name Amazon Sidewalk. Sidewalk will link smart home devices and other Amazon products using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), connecting beyond the range of a standard Wi-Fi network. Meant to be operated at the scale of a neighborhood, Sidewalk would turn devices like smart floodlights and home assistants into network bridges, passing along security updates and commands from a central Wi-Fi hub. In addition to transmitting software, the signals allow Sidewalk to triangulate a device's approximate location based on its contacts with other Sidewalk-enabled devices. The system will be built into the Echo, and Tile has also joined the project as the first third-party platform to support the system. Amazon plans to add Ring cameras to the network later, notifying device owners directly when Sidewalk is available to use. A full list of Sidewalk-compatible devices is available on the project landing page. More info here... Hearing Loss and Hi Res Audio A good friend of ours sent us a link to a Youtube video called “Hearing Loss at Age”. This video tries to explain the physical degradation of hearing as we age. The video was produced by Hans Beekhuyzen a Dutch Hifi expert and member of the Audio Engineering Society. The video is a little technical but essentially says that as we age we can not hear the upper octave of the ten octaves between 20 Hertz to 20kHz. That tenth octave starts at 16.7kHz. He says not worry because we still hear 90% of the sound spectrum. So why do we need Hi Res files? We'll get to that. He mentions Nyquist in this video to discuss sampling. This is where the video gets quite technical. He has another video that goes into much more detail about this subject (The truth about Nyquist and why 192 kHz does make sense). What is Nyquist? It is named after electronic engineer Harry Nyquist. Nyquist's theorem states that a periodic signal must be sampled at more than twice the highest frequency component of the signal. In practice, because of the finite time available, a sample rate somewhat higher than this is necessary. Since we want to sample sound up to 20Khz, for those of us lucky enough to hear sound at that frequency, the sample rate should be no lower than 40Khz. Just for completeness, sampling is a representation of sound recorded in, or converted into, digital form. In digital audio, the sound wave of the audio signal is encoded as numerical samples in a continuous sequence. For example, in CD audio, samples are taken 44100 times per second each with 16 bit sample depth. We'll cover sample depth in a bit If a CD is sampled at 44.1Khz. That means it can recreate frequencies up to 22.05Khz, far above what people can hear! So we're all good right? Again why do I need Hi Res Files? Sampling Errors One of the issues with sampling is that it's not perfect and there are errors. This is where the video lost me because I am not an electrical engineer. We'll try to sum it up here. There is an error that is induced because of the sampling rate and that error can show up in the audio spectrum that you can hear. Filtering can reduce this but that too affects the sound as well. The solution is that you can sample at a higher frequency. Hi res files are sampled at 192Khz. That means technically it is capable of capturing frequencies up to 96Khz which is way above what any human can hear. However, there is a benefit in that the errors that are created fall outside what the human can hear. Thus leaving you with a more pure recording of the original signal. There is a price to be paid for this, the file size is much bigger. Bit Depth The other element to this discussion is bit depth. The bits store the amplitude of the sound wave. CDs use 16 bits which equate to 65536 possible values. Hi res files use 24 bits or 1,6777,216 possible values. If you think visually, consider a 16 bit color monitor vs a 24 bit color monitor. The 24 bit monitor will be able to display much finer color gradations and be less blocky. The audio version is that the sound will have finer detail. And it will be at ALL frequencies, more importantly, the ones us old people can actually hear. This to us is the best argument that can be made for Hi res files that we can see… or hear. At least mathematically. Does it Matter? Only you can be the judge of that. It really depends on the style of music you listen to. Is there subtlety in the frequencies that you can hear or is it just loud? Do you want to pay the higher price for hi res audio? Do you have enough storage for the files? Can your equipment play the music? Are you listening on good equipment, especially speakers? By the way, good equipment doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. But it will cost more than a few hundred dollars. What environment are you listening in? To some there is no other way to enjoy music. To others it doesn't even matter. To us, it's in the middle. Sometimes it doesn't matter but on Friday night with a good bourbon it can be magical.
The Zoom Podtrack P4 is coming out next month (from what I hear) and this appears to be a game-changer for those podcasting on a budget. Here are some of the features of the Zoom Podtrack P4: Zoom Podtrack P4 Podcast Recorder Four mic inputs with XLR connectors Four headphone outputs with individual volume control Gain control knobs and mute buttons for each input Phantom power for all XLR inputs Automatically prevent feedback from call audio using the Mix-Minus function Easily connect your phone using the TRRS connection Trigger sound effects using four assignable Sound Pads with 11preset sounds All input sources can be recorded on separate tracks 16-bit /44.1kHz audio WAV Records directly to SD, SDHC and SDXC cards up to 512 GB 2-input, 2-output USB audio interface Class-compliant mode for iOS compatibility Up to four hours of use with just two AA batteries or a USB power supply Can be powered via 2 AA Batteries Can be powered via USB or Zoom AD-17 AC Adapter Comparing the Podtrack P4 to the Rodecaster Pro Zoom P4 VS Rodercaster Pro Zoom Podtrack P4 Manual (pdf), Price: Zoom Podtrack P4 is $199 Rodecaster is $599 Audio Processing: The Rodecaster has built-in APHEX audio processing and mic modeling. There is a "big bottom," an aural exciter, a compressor, and noise gate. The P4 has a low cut (to cut out unnecessary frequencies) and a limiter (to make sure you don't peak and distort). ThePodtrack P4 does have very powerful preamps that are very quiet. The Rodecaster also features a built-in ducking option so if the host is in channel 1, and someone tries to talk at the same time this feature (which can be turned on and off) will ensure the host (mic 1) is heard. Sound Pads: The Rodecaster has 8 pads for sound effects vs the 4 on the P4. If you're doing things live and want the ability to play sounds with a press of a button. As both the Rodecaster and the P4 have the ability to plug a phone in and you could use an app like Backpack studio which enables you to have a ton of sound pads. Slider Vs Knobs The Rodecaster has sliders vs the knobs on the P4 Storage: The P4 has a SD card, the Rodecaster has a micro SD Card. On their website, the Rodecaster mentions Micro SD up to 256 Gigs. The Podtrack P4 mentions card up to 512 Gigs. Both of those sizes are huge. Bluetooth: The Rodecaster has built-in Blue Tooth, the P4 has an optional BTA-2 Bluetooth option ($49) Recording Sample Rate: The Rodecaster records in 48khz/24-bit, the P4 is 44.1khz/16 bit. While I don't feel this makes that much of a difference (as in the end your podcast is listened to in earbuds, car speakers, and portable speakers). However, if you're doing anything with video, your video editor will be happy you have the ability to record in 48khz. Number of Tracks: The Rodecaster can record up to 8 tracks, the P4 records up to 4 Both units provide a stereo mixdown, and in addition to the mic inputs, they provide tracks for the pads. The Rodecaster has the ability to turn off the multi-track recording. Recording Into Your Computer Both send a stereo mix to the computer (great for live streaming), but the Rodecaster can also send map individual tracks to channels. Interface The Rodecaster has a touch screen. The P4 has a simple to use menu system. Markers The Rodecaster has the ability to add markers (which can be very useful for editing) While other room recorders have this feature the P4 does not ) Outputs The Rodecaster has 4 headphones out in addition to a stereo out. The Zoom P4 has four headphones out. Footprint:The Rodecaster is 14" X 11" the P4 4.1" X6.1.' This might be important for those with smaller desktops. The P4 is 1/4th smaller than the Rodecaster. For my friends across the pond the Rodecaster is 350 mm x 275 mm the Podtrack P4 is 112 mm x 155 mm Warranty: RodecasterPro: Limited 1-Year Warranty with 1 Additional Year upon Registration. (source BNH). Podtrack P4: Limited 1-Year Warranty (source BNH). If you're looking for a great sounding unit, and never need to record more than four sources, this is a great unit. Audio snobs will complain about the lack of ability to record in 48khz/24hz but 44.1/16 will be fine for something that is heard in-car speakers and earbuds. Some will complain about sliders vs knobs. The knobs help cut the footprint which gives you your desk back. If you want to achieve the tone of the rodecaster you will need to invest in some plugins. If you're on a budget and want an easy way to record separate tracks including the phone, this is worth checking out. Just don't drop it. Check out the Zoom Podtrack P4 The Zoom ZDM-1 Dynamic Microphone I must confess that the Electrovoice RE320 has been my mic for many years. It's also close to $300. The ZDM-1 comes with a pop filter, "stand" a cable, and headphones for $120. I didn't think it was fair to compare it to the RE320 so I pulled out the Rode Podmic (another microphone designed for podcasters for around $99). Both microphones are very well built, and when I kid about using them as a weapon, I'm not kidding. You need a sturdy stand to hold these up. The ZDM-1 has a great mount that screws into the bottom and just seems solid. The Rode Podmic also is well built. The Zoom ZMD-1 has 50 Hz to 18 kHz frequency response with tight bass and smooth highs enhance vocal tone for radio, podcasting, and more The Rode Podmic has a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. In specs, it should pick up a bit more bass and a bit more high end. While neither one of these microphones sound bad, I thought I heard a little more high end and sibilance on the Zoom ZMD-1. The one thing that Audio Technica, Zoom, and other microphone companies need to quit doing is giving us microphone stands that are 100% completely worthless. While the TPS-4 stand that comes with the ZDM-1 is sturdier than the other worthless microphone stands, They are so short that you have to do a bizarre yoga pose to lean over to use it. Either invent a new mic stand as an accessory, or just include the clip/mount and lower the price. Nobody in their right mind is using the TPS-4 microphone stand. The Zoom ZHP-1 Headphones were amazingly clear. The high end was crystal clear to an almost alarming point. The somewhat self-adjusting headphones fit nice and snug and really cut out the outside world. I used other "included" headphones with other microphones and they were typically uncomfortable and had the fidelity of a record cut out of a cereal box (you have to be over 50 to get that). These had a nice sound, and I love that the cable can be disconnected at the headphones (great for those of us who are always tangled in or headphone cable. For $199 this a good value with a solid mic, nice pop filter, study mount and comfortable headphones to boot. Just pick up a nice boom arm (are strong desk stand as it is heavy). August Question of the Month: What Keeps You Going? This month the question was, "What has kept you going with your podcast when others have stopped?" Kris and Kristine from the Kris and Kristine Show Kris and Kristine are engaged and this is just another great way of spending time together. (everyone together - awww....). Kristine said, " I'm big on trying to constantly strengthen our relationship. And there's a lot of research that says, for a woman, when she invests in the hobbies and the interests of her partner, then it really helps to build that bond. And so Kris could have loved going to golf or you could have had all these hobbies that take you out of the house and away from me, but instead, you choose to build and grow a hobby with me. What woman wouldn't want that from her significant other that you want to spend dedicated time with me? These are super nice peeps and I wish them the best when they get married in November. Check out their show at www.krisandkristine.com Curtis Longellow from the Rerozest Podcast Curtis Longfellow from the Retrozest podcast needed an outlet. He wanted to talk about all things retro (70's and 80's) and by starting a podcast he attracted other people who are just like him. It turns out it's really paid off. Diane Franklin, the actress who portrayed Monique Juno in the classic 80s dark comedy film Better Off Dead, granted me an interview in celebration of the 30 fifth anniversary of the film. In fact, it just posted yesterday. The other thing that keeps me going is the power of podcasting network shows. In fact, via Episode Number 678 of the School of podcasting, you really prepared me for the aforementioned interview with Diane Franklin. What was supposed to only be a 45-minute interview ballooned into an hour and 15 minutes. This was largely because the tips you shared on Episode Number 678 really prepared me and helped me to frame and ask some very unique questions, which kept the stories from Diane flowing. Additionally, you recently did a short review of my AC DC Back in Black 40th anniversary episode on your Podcast Rodeo Show. You shared several tips which helped me to plan for future episodes. And also you pointed out a glaring typo on my podcast description to which I immediately responded and corrected. Thank you for all you do. Dave. I suspect that your contribution to teaching about podcasting is really keeping a bunch of podcasters going, keep up the good work, and check out the retros s podcasts at retro zest.com forward slash podcast. Civilla Morgan from the Childless, Not By Choice (and Not Just Another Religion and politics Podcast) Here is what Civilla from the Childless, Not by Choice had this to say, "I believe I believe in the power of podcasting, I believe podcasting is a Message carrier. And I can see the results of it because of the response that I get. I may not be at a million downloads. But I'm hearing from people whose lives are literally being changed when they listen to the Childless, not by choice podcast episodes. They're writing into me. One woman just called me about a week ago from Holland on speakpipe on my website, and she left a message because she was so excited to find thes podcast, she couldn't believe it. And she had to tell me all about what episode she was on and how the podcast has completely absolutely helped her and that she just recently joined the Facebook group. I've got to keep going. I've got to keep getting the word out. Slowly but surely it can be tedious. There can be deep valley moments where you just want to throw everything across the room and just walk away from it all. And then those awesome mountain top moments where you get that awesome interview, like when I got that interview with you, Dave Jackson. And so you have to take the good with the bad when it comes to podcasting and I just love that I can get the message out whether it's the Childless, not by choice podcast, or the Not just another religion and politics podcast where I get to say my part as to how the Christian community is behaving (or misbehaving right now), in some instances. It's just a way to get the word out to get your message out. It's truly a message carrier. And that's why I'm still podcasting. Craig Wealand from Ingles Podcast Here are the reason Craig keeps podcasting: I podcast with a co-host, who I've known for many years. He's a very good friend. And it's a lot of fun to get together with him. once every three weeks, batch record some episodes, then have a nice lunch together and just hang out, just be with someone who I really like. We have a laugh, we have fun together. So one big element of the fun I get from podcasting is getting together with my friend and colleague. I think we're helping people with our product when I know we're helping people, we get feedback, voice messages, emails, telling us that because of the podcasts, we've helped people, get promotions, find a job pass an exam in English, so we know that we're doing some good out there and then keeps us going the feedback from our community. I really like the podcasting community. They're a great bunch of people. And I enjoy hanging out with podcasters. I feel very comfortable when I'm with podcasters. And, and over the years, I've made some really good friends in the podcasting community going to events and conferences, and meeting people online. So I really like being part of the community. And it's much easier to be part of the community if you have a podcast. I think I really like creating something that wasn't in the world before. Hopefully, that's a good thing. It might be a bad thing. But I like the idea that we've put something out there that might be of use to people and it didn't exist before we turned on the microphones. I like the idea that I've created something. Check out Craig at Ingles Podcast Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting I've always said that podcasting scratches every itch I have. It is somewhat technical, and I'm somewhat of a geek. You are in 100% control and you can do anything you want. As a creative person, I love that. I get to help people. As someone with a teaching background, that puts a lot of "Gas in my tank." As someone who spent myself into bankruptcy trying to have children (and failed), this is somehow my "Legacy." Check out all of Dave's shows at www.powerofpodcasting.com September Question of the Month Right now, I'm obsessed with the word, Interesting. When you hear the word interesting, what comes to your mind. If someone who spoke another language and asked you to explain what Interesting mean, how would you describe it. My guest is Chris Saunders, host of Return to Camp Blood - a Friday the 13th fan podcast. Chris has a very practical and low cost setup, and he makes the most of it! (Btw, his show is super niche in that they only talk about Friday the 13th movies...lol) He produces his show from start to finish and regularly has 2-3 other co-hosts who are all in different states. They connect via Skype and record with Pamela call recorder. He pans himself hard left and all other co-hosts hard right. They all use ATR2005's and Chris has a Behringer XENYX X1204USB mic that he uses if his roommate or someone else is hosting with him at his house. Then he brings the raw .WAV file into Adobe Audition, separating the stereo file into two mono tracks. He normalizes the levels for both tracks and removes background noise, and maybe adds a gate if the background noise is still an issue. He also truncates long periods of silence using a preset he made. Any period of silence more than 550 milliseconds long gets truncated to 550 ms. Then he edits and mixes down to 16 bit 44.1kHz .WAV file at -19 LUFS. Then, in another separate session in Audition, he adds intro/outro music, any other audio clips, and then exports to MP3. Thank you for being a great guest, Chris! DID YOU KNOW........We exist for the purpose of helping you, so please comment below with any questions or remarks. Thanks for listening! Story: Ready to take a “trip” on The Georgetown Loop Railroad? Your journey starts at Devil’s Gate Depot as you stand between the cars and hear the sounds of this historic narrow gauge train as it rounds a tight bend. Things morph from there… enjoy the psychedelic ride. Artist Notes: The piece begins with the raw field recording of the train as it goes around a tight turn. It’s just such an amazing set of sounds I wanted to offer the listener context and a taste of the harmonic content of the original source material before I took things to another place. I then manually play and improvise from there performing the notes in chromatic mode and heavily manipulating the field recordings as the piece progresses. Near the end of the piece I’m using effects like comb filters to create what sound almost like long tremolo strings. Another fun thing for me was manipulating rail noise through a comb filter and delay and then changing the delay time (which changes pitch) to create what almost sounds like an arpeggio of pizzicato strings notes. While I was not allowed to travel between cars (because it’s a narrow gauge and runs along mountain drop offs and on high bridges), they allowed me to stand outside the closed door of the car between cars. This being the case I got some AWESOME recordings isolated from other passengers for the most parts. Lots of great wheels squeaking, flexing of the old cars, coupler noise, and sometimes engine noise. Instrumentation & Instrumentalities: I used only the Elektron Octatrack. I configured the machine to use 4 tracks made up of 3 field recordings from the session mentioned above each with their own insert effects. One track was used twice with a different set of effects. I also had the Octatrack configured to use track 8 for two master effects. After setting up the patch for the Octatrack, I rehearsed the piece a few times experimenting with different effects, expressive morphs, and notes. I then recorded the piece in one real-time pass without edits. Field Recording Notes I recorded these field recordings on The Georgetown Loop Railroad which is about 45 miles West of Denver... “one of Colorado’s first visitor attractions. Completed in 1884, this spectacular stretch of three-foot narrow gauge railroad was considered an engineering marvel for its time. In 1973, the Colorado Historical Society began restoring the railroad as part of its 978-acre Georgetown Loop Historic Mining & Railroad Park.” More here… http://georgetownlooprr.com/.” I’ve lived in Colorado since I was 7 and had never been on this train! They have all sorts of themed runs (Oktoberfest, Dinner trains, Big Horn Sheep Festival…) and I highly recommend you try it you come out Colorado way. We took the “Santa’s North Pole” adventure. Date & Time: December 7th, 2014 Location: Georgetown Loop Railroad, Georgetown, CO | Departing from Georgetown Devil’s Gate Depot Recorder: Zoom H2N Format: 44.1kHz/24bit 120 degree stereo Credits: Music, Sounds, Story, Notes and Cover art by Mark Mosher ©2016 Mark J. 1978 saw stations packing their trunks and moving homes up and down the band, both commercial and BBC. My good friends at Trent quietly moved 1kHz from 998 to 999 AM – as the separation between channels became a neat 9 kHz - but other changes, not least at the BBC, were more substantial. On 23th November 1978. Radio 2 waved farewell to Long Wave, making way for Radio 4. 693 and 909 kHz became Radio 2; and Radio 1 moved off its old 247 wavelength – over to 275 and 285; leaving 247 for poor old Radio 3. I use wavelengths, rather than frequencies, in the latter clause as the digits are but so familiar, thanks to generations of jingles. The UK was also given 227 kHz, but did not rush into using it. I recall during my time at the Radio Authority, the regulator debated, rather quickly, whether to bother. The frequency changes were a major project. The BBC plonked little stickers through the doors of all households. Indeed, some lucky old radio sets may still have them on. Enjoy here a beautifully cynical view of the whole thing from John Holmstrom on Radio 3 as it looked forward to a new home on Radio 1's former home at 247.

Finishing up was a mix I put together of a few industrial sound effects from FreeSound: steam engine at museum by 3bagbrew, which is licensed under an Attribution license, and wrenches_thrown_or_dropped by vibe_crc, Ratchet1 by orestes910, a chunk of construction metal lumber by cognito perceptu, and Metal Hammer on Metal on Wood Impact Collision Bang 44.1kHz by qubodup, all four of which are licensed under the CC Zero license.I've been a big fan of steampunk for years. I love the visual style, I love the dedication to craftsmanship, learning different construction techniques, and in general making things that not only function but look nice doing what they do. As long as I can remember, I've been a big fan of steam-powered devices and gears anyway, mainly because you can see how things work, and steampunk brings those together into an awesome aesthetic. Plus there's the element of classic literary influences mixed in, and as I'm sure you can probably tell from the audio books advertised on this podcast in the noncommercial breaks, I'm quite fond of that. It's just an all-around cool movement, and I'd love to see more people really taking part in it in not just a trend way, but in a paradigm way. Do what you do with quality to last. Fix things if you can. Take a pass on the throwaway society we've developed and learn the cool stuff your ancestors and predecessors knew. With that said, with the wide variety of people who have gotten into steampunk over the last few years, there's quite a bit of variation in what people do and do not consider steampunk music. I tend to think of it more as music that sounds very mechanical or which blends elements of old and new musical styles, and there's plenty of open licensed music out there which fits that. So much that I had to split the episode up so I could keep this at about an hour and do another episode later. Speaking of which, this episode's going to be long enough as is, so let's get back to things.traction engine x2 (1:31)Getaway (otra vez rmx) (voiceless mix) (4:19)BEAUTY FULL - sidecar tommy (3:06)Jester's Tear (2:43)That was another sound effect from FreeSound named traction engine x2 by NLM, which is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial license. Pretty much a basic classic side-scroller, but it runs in a browser, and runs quite well. Story: This soundscape is the soundtrack to an imaginary experience where, using a special morphing environment suit, the wearer can instantly transition from a land to sea simply by walking into the surf. The piece begins with you observing a figure walking down the steps on to Chatham Lighthouse Beach late at night. The figure is silhouetted by the beam of the Chatham Light. As the figure walks past you and on to the beach you switch to the figure’s point of view. You then walk towards the ocean with the beam of the Chatham Light swinging out over your head and enter the surf. As you enter the surf, your environment suit extends and wraps you like a second skin. You hear the mechanics of the metamorphosis as the suit jacks in to your mind and adjusts your buoyancy allowing you to keep walking down on to the sea floor. Under the ocean the sensors isolate and amplify sounds from the environment. You close your eyes and listen – and return once again to the land. Artist Notes: Based on a field recording I made at night on Chatham Lighthouse Beach, MA. I recorded myself walking down the metal stairs to the beach and right up to the surf and back. I used digital effects such as comb filters and synths to make the more synthetic sounds. Welcome once again to the Live Music Podcast episode #8 (the Ocho). Technical difficulties delayed the release of this episode but hopefully it will be worth the wait. For this episode I am featuring Todd Snider, who is a fantastic singer/songwriter out of Nashville. Mr. Snider's style of music doesn't make the radio waves very often, but in my humble opinion he is at the top of the food chain for folk singers. His live performances are chalked full of some great story telling both in the songs and between them. He also tackles song themes that you won't find on the latest bubblegum popstar's CD. Another interesting note about Todd Snider is that he plays his shows with bare feet (it doesn't get much more folk than that). I'm not sure if you will be able to notice the lack of shoes on this performance from September 17, 2006 but at least it sounds really good.
