Today we will be replaying a classic episode from our first season in preparation for SOPHE's 2023 Annual Conference where they will be announcing this year's Sarah Mazelis Paper of the Year Award. Last year's winner was Dr. Petteway's paper “Poetry as Praxis + “Illumination”: Toward an Epistemically Just Health Promotion for Resistance, Healing, and (Re)Imagination.” The year prior, Dr. Katherine Kim and colleagues won with their paper “Native American Youth Citizen Scientists Uncovering Community Health and Food Security Priorities.” Replaying Dr. Kim's episode (which was our 11th episode!) is particularly special to me, because I get the pleasure of sharing and reminiscing about this paper with you all during Women's History Month. We can't wait to unveil this year's paper of the year, so for now, enjoy!

It has been twenty episodes...and you can hardly tell with that faint attempt at a cold open with a hard-to-hear Obama clip but we promise everything else is much easier to hear (we will not promise better...but easier to hear absolutely!!!). In this "landmark" episode Jerry tags a digs on modern hip-hop (3:10) and Microsoft Teams (4:22) before getting into the focus, which is how these unprecedented times aren't that unprecedented (6:46) and how we are paying the ultimate price for repeating our failed history with our lives. Jerry pays tribute to our fallen teachers (15:45), thanks teachers, child care and adult care givers (17:14) before summoning the recently departed Sir Ken Robinson to challenge America's collective lack of imagination in the areas of education and the economy in hopes that we can spare our children of a continuation of the "old normal" (18:06). From there, Jerry gets a little introspective and begins to work some things out while on-air (so thanks for the mini-therapy session) before getting all Killer Mike on y'all. He's sorry about that (ok...he's not really sorry.) (29:01) In the end, the host finds a way to segway structural and institutional racism into a conversation about a landmark moment in television history (35:24) before handing out some celebrity shout outs. The destruction of our cultural heritage, and our shared humanity embedded within, might not be inevitable if we rethink our relationship with culture. Lucas Lixinski is an Associate Professor at UNSW Law. Lucas' research focuses on international law, primarily international cultural heritage law and international human rights law. His latest monograph, International Heritage Law for Communities Exclusion and Re-Imagination, was published in May 2019 by Oxford University Press. This talk and interview are part of Unsomnia: a series of short talks for restless minds. Tackling the issues that keep us up at night, imagining the inconceivable and envisioning the future, UNSW researchers have just 10 minutes each to explain what life we will be living in the future. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of UNSW Sydney, researchers were asked to take stock of what society used to be, fast forward to today's world and look ahead another 70 years. Hosted by Rob Brooks.

‘we already know this dumb trick’‘kill us if you could’The 2 angry, little girls jump from their decrepit thrones and grab as much fabric as they can hold and pull with all their furious strength. A long moment stretches into hopeless silence as they strain and sweat. Until a deep tearing rips into the room. Rich, darkly layered fabric begins to fall to the floor in musty heaps as the 2 little girls rip everything down.‘empty threats!’‘from a empty forgotten king!’A suffocating heat pours into the room as the 2 little girls rage and tear, rip, rend their way through every fold and crease. Their breath catches at the onslaught of heat, but they continue in their blind rage. Until they find a tightly wound lump of fabric, struggling and pressing, their strong fingers rip through the dark, crusty and crinkled fabric until one of their crew is free, freshly blinking and standing. ‘is that how you hide our friends’‘we know your gimmicks now’

Assistant Professor Federica Goffi fills a blind spot in current architectural theory and practice with this book, Time Matter(s): Invention and Re-Imagination in Built Conservation: The Unfinished Drawing and Building of St. Peter’s, the Vatican (Routledge, 2013). In proposing a hybrid approach which merges architectural and conservation theory the work offers the reader a counter-viewpoint to common understandings of preservation as singular moment from the past which has been frozen and brought forward to the present. Through a micro-historical study of a Renaissance concept of restoration, a theoretical framework to question the issue of conservation as a creative endeavor arises. It focuses on Tiberio Alfarano’s 1571 ichnography of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, into which a complex body of religious, political, architectural and cultural elements is woven. By merging past and present temple’s plans, Alfarano created a track-drawing questioning the design pursued after Michelangelo’s death (1564), opening the gaze towards other possible future imaginings. Federica Goffi book further uncovers how the drawing was acted on by Carlo Maderno (1556-1629), who literally used it as physical substratum to for new design proposals, completing the renewal of the temple in 1626. This research shows how architectural and conservation practices can be merged in contemporary renovation. By creating hybrid drawings, the retrospective and prospective gaze of built conservation forms a continuous and contiguous reality, where a pre-existent condition engages with future design joining multiple temporalities within a continuity of identity. The study might provide a paradigmatic and timely model to retune contemporary architectural sensibility when transforming a building of recognized significance.
