As conservative governors try to score political points by depositing busloads and planeloads of migrants in liberal cities, it can seem like an unprecedented exercise in cruelty. But it's a page ripped from an earlier playbook in U.S. politics, one that was forgotten for decades for a very good reason. This week in New Orleans history. Reverse Freedom Rides April 21, 1962. The Reverse Freedom Rides of 1962 were a deliberate parody of the Freedom Rides organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in the previous year. Also called the Freedom Rides North, African American "participants" in the Reverse Freedom Rides were offered free one-way transportation and the promise of free housing and guaranteed employment to Northern cities. George Singelmann of the Greater New Orleans Citizens' Council orchestrated the Reverse Freedom Rides, which served as the Citizens' Councils' means of testing the sincerity of Northern liberals' quest for equality for African Americans. This attempt to embarrass Northern critics of the Citizens' Councils was a way of, in Singelmann's words, "telling the North to put up or shut up." Public outcry against the Reverse Freedom Rides was swift and direct, with groups such as the Urban League of Greater New Orleans leading the chorus of disapproval. WDSU Radio released a statement in April 1962,that typifies the response: "WDSU believes the Freedom Bus North movement is sick sensationalism bordering on moronic." This week in Louisiana. In 1961, an multiracial group of intrepid "Freedom Riders" attempted to desegregate bus stations in some of the most militantly segregationist parts of the Deep South. These courageous civil rights activists, including John Lewis, Diane Nash, Jim Zwerg, and James Peck, encountered shocking violence in the State of Alabama. A bus they were taking was burned down, and several Riders were bloodied & beaten by organized vigilantes who opposed racial integration. Once photographic images & film footage of this brutality received international media coverage, the Kennedy Administration finally intervened to force desegregation of interstate travel facilities. Southern politicians then attempted to get revenge by tricking busloads of impoverished African-American Southerners to head north in the so-called "Reverse Freedom Rides." Meanwhile, Cold War tensions continued to heat up, as the Vienna Summit between John F. Kennedy & Nikita Khrushchev failed to reach a solution to the Berlin crisis, leading the Communists to construct the Berlin Wall to keep East Germans from moving into the capitalist West. Decolonization continued to free global populations from European imperialism, including a violent struggle that gained Algerian independence from France. Some new nations sought neutral non-alignment, while others allied with the Communist bloc. JFK tried to keep these new Third World nations from siding with the Soviets via aid programs such as Food for Peace, the Peace Corps, and the Alliance for Progress in Latin America. However, there was a more coercive side to these US Cold War efforts, as the Kennedy Administration also funded CIA interference into foreign politics, anti-Communist military buildups in Latin nations, and an escalation of US military commitment in South Vietnam. The year closed on an ominous note as both the USA & the USSR began escalating defense spending and nuclear testing.Support the show

Many people were shocked when Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida arranged to have a group of asylum seekers sent from Texas to Martha's Vineyard - but we've actually seen a move like this before. In the early 1960s, a group of Black people were sent from the South to progressive cities in the North based on false promises of job opportunities. These buses were dubbed the "Reverse Freedom Rides", in response to the Freedom Riders who protested segregation on public transportation. Timothy Welbeck, Director of the Center for Anti-Racism at Temple University, explains what happened back in the '60s and how it's reflected in what's happening today. Welcome back to another episode of 50Talk. Cathy and I are glad you've returned for another listen. This weeks we start the show by thanking our guest from last week (Matt & Barb) for joining us. We really did have a great time catching up with them after not talking to them for a while. We also Congratulate another former guest and good friend Marc on the birth of his 1st grandchild. He and his wife Julie are just adding the Grandkids to there wonderful family.  Staying on the topic of family we talk about another Great weekend of Family.  We have a family get together at the BGSU vs Marshall football game and my cousin Cavon has a career day scoring his first Collegiate touchdown and topping that off with a special teams tackle that lights the stadium up. I'm glad we had so much family at the game to see him show out the way he did. Good food, family and football and you can't go wrong.  We continue to morn the death of the Queen of England seems like for the second week. She is very deserving but can the news please get back to Former President Trump and getting him locked up.  On Sunday Puerto Rico was getting hit by another hurricane and by evening the island was with out lights. Please keep them in your thoughts and we hope that they make it through another tough hurricane.  Onto the "Main topic" of the show. Governor DiSanti's and his scheme to use human beings as political pawns.  Sending immigrants to Massachusetts for some political gain but having no problem showing what a racists he really is. Him and Governor Abbott of Texas have to be some of the worst people on the planet. (and Donald Trump) This is a scheme taken right out out Americas Racists history books from the early 60's.  Reverse Freedom Rides are what they did by lying to African Americans to get them out of the south to the North where "people wanted Blacks to have equal rights" but the south didn't.  You lie to these people by telling them they will be offered jobs, money and a place to live.  The only difference today is Governor DiSanti's and Governor Abbott are open and proud of their Racists behavior. They flaunt it and sadly there are Americans who agree with what they are doing. These two men should be ashamed of what they are doing.   We end the show with Cathy talking about "Sex rooms" this is becoming a thing so listen up and take notes. Enjoy the episode and if you want to add more to the topics please, don't  keep it to yourself. Send me an email at victor50talk@gmail.com. *Let it be known that all the conversation in this episode are my opinion alone. I'm not asking you to agree or disagree.

Joy Reid leads this episode of The ReidOut with the grotesque, cynical politics behind the Florida governor's migrant stunt, which is just like the racist "Reverse Freedom Rides" of the 1960's, as these migrants were lied to every step of the way, so DeSantis could own the libs. Also in this episode, we bring you new reporting from The Washington Post on how Donald Trump's team grossly mischaracterized the nature of the documents he was keeping at Mar-a-Lago, when the National Archives first asked for them back. Rep. Tim Ryan, Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate for Ohio, also joins the show. Finally, fresh from her triumphant victory at the Emmy Awards, actress Sheryl Lee Ralph from 'Abbott Elementary' joins Joy on her viral acceptance speech. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.
