Vicki Atkinson and Wynne Leon are delighted to talk with author and publisher, Rick Kaempfer about his book EveryCubEver. This is the second game in our baseball double-header as we talk with the hilarious and engaging Rick about his labor of love, EveryCubEver. He swears this seventh edition of the book is the last time he's going to update it until the Chicago Cubs win the World Series. There are 2600 Cubs in this book – 2296 players and the rest are managers and back office. Rick provides the storytelling in each entry so it's a great read for history buffs as well as baseball fans. He tells who became a dentist and who ended up in jail, who was on the beaches of Normandy, and who went on to become a governor. As an example of the engaging storytelling, he tells us why manager Frank Chance traded for pitcher Jack Harper just to ruin his career. He gives us the background on the 200 photographs that are included in this edition of the book and where he found them. Rick tells us the touching story of how he got invited to go to the Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony this year. Such a fantastic way to round out a year that included publishing this seventh edition of EveryCubEver. Join us as we explore the scenic and beautiful places we go when we tell baseball stories. You won't want to miss this great conversation with the amazing and entertaining, Rick Kaempfer! We know you'll love it!For show notes and more great inspiration please visit https://sharingtheheartof thematter.com

I first learned about attorney Bruce Wolf through WLUP, the preeminent Chicago radio station back in the day.  WLUP was very important to a lot of us growing up in the Chicago area when we did and there is a great new book out about this radio station. Here is the link to “The Loop Files” by long time WLUP employee Rick Kaempfer.  Rick's book discusses Bruce Wolf in detail and all of the contributions Bruce made to that radio station.  Listening to him, I was fascinated by the fact that Bruce was a lawyer and, also, a highly respected Chicago sportscaster with a very quick wit. I enjoyed getting to speak with Bruce on this episode of the podcast and he is still as energetic, smart, and sharp as I remembered him!

In this episode, Vicki Atkinson and Wynne Leon are talking with author, podcaster, publisher, and former radio producer, Rick Kaempfer. Rick has recently published The Loop Files: An Oral History of the Most Outrageous Radio Station Ever. It's a celebration of a time when radio, rock and roll, and comedy all came together. We talk about how Rick prepared to meet celebrities as a DJ and producer in the pre-Internet era. He tells us about his regimen to subscribe to all the magazines he could and read 7 newspapers a day. Rick, who claims he is fueled by eye rolls, tells us great stories from his book, Father Knows Nothing, that pulled from his weekly column when he was a stay-at-home dad. We recorded this conversation right after opening day for major league baseball which was a great segue to his book, Every Cub Ever. And we talk about his fiction and his work as a publisher supporting authors and encouraging the full publishing lifecycle including promotion. This is a great episode with an incredibly prolific author, supportive publisher, and powerful presence. We know you'll love it! “Everyone has a story to tell and when its your personal story you’re selling yourself, too. And that, to me, is a very easy sell.” — Rick Kaempfer Today I interviewed Rick Kaempfer and David Stern of Eckhartz Press. Rick Kaempfer is the co-founder and publisher of Eckhartz Press. In addition to being the publisher, he is the author of several Eckhartz Press releases, inclucing "EveryCubEver", “Father Knows Nothing”, “Records Truly Is My Middle Name” (with John Records Landecker) and “The Living Wills” (with Brendan Sullivan), Rick has been published several times before (including a novel “$everance” and a how-to-book about radio called “The Radio Producer’s Handbook”). He was also a member of the media for more than twenty years as the producer of two highly acclaimed radio shows (Steve Dahl & Garry Meier and John Records Landecker), and still covers the industry as the media critic for the Illinois Entertainer. He has watched the media landscape change over the past thirty years from a front row seat, and is excited to use that experience as the publisher of Eckhartz Press. David Stern is the co-founder and publisher of Eckhartz Press, and the author of “The Balding Handbook”. After a 20+ year sales and marketing career, and a ten year stint as a principal in a Chicago advertising agency, Stern comes to Eckhartz Press uniquely qualified to tackle the realities of an ever-changing publishing landscape. He and Kaempfer have been collaborating in one form or another since they met at the University of Illinois in the early 1980s (when both must have been mere children). Stern is also one of the officers of Eckhartz Press’ parent company Just One Bad Century, Inc, and proud to call himself a life long (“City Boy”) Chicagoan. Rick Kaempfer just released an amazingly entertaining satirical novel: $everance.  It is the first book I've managed to finish in two years (due to my preoccupation with my crazy toddler) and I laughed out loud many times while reading it - yeah, it's that funny!  If you work in the radio business you'll love the inside view of the industry and if you're not in the media you will certainly learn a lot of eye-opening trade secrets.  He also co-wrote an earlier book (with John Swanson), The Radio Producers Handbook.  Both books cover a subject matter he knows all too well: broadcasting. Before becoming a full-time writer, Rick was a nationally recognized radio producer in Chicago for Steve Dahl & Garry Meier (1987-1991) and John Records Landecker (1993-2003).  I first met him at WLUP when he produced The Morning Loop Guys (2005).  He has also hosted his own radio show, wrote and hosted national radio specials, and currently co-owns an advertising agency in Chicago.  Rick has some amazing blogs (links are below) that I read regularly and highly recommend, plus he is also a contributing editor at Shore Magazine and a humor writer for The Beachwood Reporter.  Rick literally writes something new for public consumption every day.  I don't know how he does it all while raising three boys!
