Harriet Jacobs is one of the best-known female abolitionists and authors who wrote about their experiences of enslavement in the South. But while searching for information about Jacobs' children, literary historian Jonathan Schroeder discovered something else: The United States Governed by Six Hundred Thousand Despots, the long-lost autobiography of Jacobs' brother, John Swanson Jacobs. In today's episode, Schroeder speaks with NPR's Juana Summers about the life of the author, his escape to freedom and the blistering critique of the United States that he wrote in 1855 while living in Australia. This week's topic covers how to have a more resilient mindset when you're focused on building your own company. Headspace is almost everything when you're dealing with a lot of moving pieces, unforeseen stressors, and disruption. Today's guest has some answers on how you can handle the unknown and certainty with ease. John Swanson is the CEO of Wendell, a coaching company that focuses on the areas of Mindset and Health. He was the former CEO of Granite Games, Fast Factory Fitness, and Factory Forge. He is also an avid professional athlete who is passionate about shortening business leaders' to-do lists and turning them into clear action steps that move the needle. When you fail, that's when you really learn. As a professional athlete, John has had his fair share of failures and when he retired, he found a new path that led him to help other athletes with their nutrition, sports performance, and mindset. A lot of times, life will not meet your expectations. How do you manage the disappointment in your life? Do you sit and wallow, do you start to dig yourself out of it, or do you give up completely? Sports are even more ruthless when it comes to winners and losers. Technically, there can only be one. Everyone else is seen as a failure otherwise. When you're on a “losing team,” you have to be extremely proactive in finding the small victories that help you keep going. If you can't find these small wins in the bigger picture of life, it becomes incredibly hard to push through.   Interview Links: Sponsored by: Bit.ly/clariontech Wendellco.com John on LinkedIn   Resources: Scaling Up Summits (Select Bill Gallagher as your coach during registration for a discount.) When critically acclaimed high strangeness investigative docuseries, Hellier, released its second season in the winter of 2019, the paranormal and occult communities were set ablaze with the disturbing implications of just what dark and magickal goings on may be taking place in the hills and hollers of Kentucky. One town in the Commonwealth received a particular spotlight in the series for the possibility of harboring subterranean alien bases, secret goblin worshipping cults, and a legacy of a conspiracy of silence. Tonight, we take a look at the town of Somerset in relation to the larger phenomena as explored in Hellier. A town that we have discussed many times on this show for its proclivity for paranormal activity. A town less than 20 minutes from the MIKHQ. Join us as we discuss what strange things are happening in Somerset, the unsettling rumors we’ve heard our whole lives, and the startlingly strange way these synchronicities connect with the experiences of the Alien Cave Base Task Force in Hellier season 2. Attention Nightowls! It’s a new year, the midnight hour is upon us once again, and the curious cryptids of Kentucky have returned! Or did they ever really leave? Tonight we sit down to discuss a few of the mysterious, unknown creatures that flew under our radar in our previous edition of this series and a few returning entities that continue to haunt the Kentucky hills, hollers, and everywhere in between. From anomalous and out of place animals like large black cats and kangaroos to a reemergence of the gravedigger, we’re giving a full rundown of some of Kentucky’s most infamous cryptids, monsters, and creatures. In addition, we take a deep dive into Bigfoot in the Bluegrass and take a look at some of the stranger encounters with the beast as well as the varying creatures, such as the Bearilla and Spotsville Monster, who may prove to be Sasquatchian in nature. You can hear it all right here, on tonight’s episode of Midnight in Kentucky; The Return of the Kentucky Cryptids! Dr. John Swanson, Chief of Transplantation Surgery at ChristianaCare discussed kidney health, the National Kidney Foundation and their big fundraiser, the Wilmington Kidney Walk, October 27 at the Delaware Riverfront.  We began with a discussion of the role a healthy kidney plays in overall good health, regulating fluids and removing salts, proteins and calcium impacting our blood pressure and other systems.   He told us the best way to protect our kidney health is to maintain a good weight, exercise, treat any underlying conditions as your doctor prescribes and drink two liters of fluid per day.  Next he described what can go wrong, including diabetes, chronic heart disease, hypertension and autoimmune disease, as well as congenital defects and family-passed disease such as polycystitus, and the symptoms that present, including weight gain, swelling and higher blood pressure.   He recommended to start seeing an endocrinologist for diabetes management to prevent further damage and to discuss future kidney disease treatment options – dialysis and transplant – as soon as possible with your doctor.  He noted that the rules have changed, time spent on dialysis applies to wait time on the transplant list, decisions can be delayed.  Dr. Swanson talked about his program at ChistianaCare and the types of transplants they perform – describing the kidney transplant process.  Noting that a living donor transplant has a better chance of success over a cadaver, he encouraged anyone considering becoming a donor to reach out to christianacare.org.   He spoke of ‘chain' donation, where someone gives to a stranger, whose family or friends donate to another, until as many 16 or more transplants have taken place. We discussed the work of the National Kidney Foundation, they fund research, education and advocacy for health care and coverage for kidney diseases.  They offer support and referrals through kidney.org.  Their biggest fundraiser, the Kidney Walk takes place in cities all across the country, for the location nearest you visit kidneywalk.org. It's so much fun to have a band on Dr. Lisa ! Gillian Visco and John Swanson of Shadow Monster spend time with me at the RFB studio., the day before their album from Dadstash Records launches and they honor RFB by releasing a song from Punching Bag, their new album: Kill Me Sweetie. Here's what Gillian writes about her new album.: "Punching Bag is an album about betrayal and isolation. It's about being so heartbroken that you lose yourself. It's about depression and loneliness, anxiety and panic. It's about a hunger so insatiable and unshakeable that a part of you has to completely die in order to move on. I hope it can be a source of comfort for anyone going through a rough patch - because it was built on one." Anyways - we talk about the relationship that they album is based on and I have to say, I think Gillians processing her relationship through this work has been very healing for her. We also chat about the bands creative process, play some more of the music from the new album and basically have a blast. Really like Gillian's no bullshit attitude here! Btw: It's on

Rick Kaempfer just released an amazingly entertaining satirical novel: $everance.  It is the first book I've managed to finish in two years (due to my preoccupation with my crazy toddler) and I laughed out loud many times while reading it - yeah, it's that funny!  If you work in the radio business you'll love the inside view of the industry and if you're not in the media you will certainly learn a lot of eye-opening trade secrets.  He also co-wrote an earlier book (with John Swanson), The Radio Producers Handbook.  Both books cover a subject matter he knows all too well: broadcasting. Before becoming a full-time writer, Rick was a nationally recognized radio producer in Chicago for Steve Dahl & Garry Meier (1987-1991) and John Records Landecker (1993-2003).  I first met him at WLUP when he produced The Morning Loop Guys (2005).  He has also hosted his own radio show, wrote and hosted national radio specials, and currently co-owns an advertising agency in Chicago.  Rick has some amazing blogs (links are below) that I read regularly and highly recommend, plus he is also a contributing editor at Shore Magazine and a humor writer for The Beachwood Reporter.  Rick literally writes something new for public consumption every day.  I don't know how he does it all while raising three boys!
