He is also an avid professional athlete who is passionate about shortening business leaders' to-do lists and turning them into clear action steps that move the needle. When you fail, that's when you really learn. As a professional athlete, John has had his fair share of failures and when he retired, he found a new path that led him to help other athletes with their nutrition, sports performance, and mindset. A lot of times, life will not meet your expectations. How do you manage the disappointment in your life? Do you sit and wallow, do you start to dig yourself out of it, or do you give up completely? Sports are even more ruthless when it comes to winners and losers. Technically, there can only be one. Everyone else is seen as a failure otherwise. When you're on a “losing team,” you have to be extremely proactive in finding the small victories that help you keep going. Attention Nightowls! It’s a new year, the midnight hour is upon us once again, and the curious cryptids of Kentucky have returned! Or did they ever really leave? Tonight we sit down to discuss a few of the mysterious, unknown creatures that flew under our radar in our previous edition of this series and a few returning entities that continue to haunt the Kentucky hills, hollers, and everywhere in between. Dr. John Swanson, Chief of Transplantation Surgery at ChristianaCare discussed kidney health, the National Kidney Foundation and their big fundraiser, the Wilmington Kidney Walk, October 27 at the Delaware Riverfront.  We began with a discussion of the role a healthy kidney plays in overall good health, regulating fluids and removing salts, proteins and calcium impacting our blood pressure and other systems.   He told us the best way to protect our kidney health is to maintain a good weight, exercise, treat any underlying conditions as your doctor prescribes and drink two liters of fluid per day.  Next he described what can go wrong, including diabetes, chronic heart disease, hypertension and autoimmune disease, as well as congenital defects and family-passed disease such as polycystitus, and the symptoms that present, including weight gain, swelling and higher blood pressure.   He recommended to start seeing an endocrinologist for diabetes management to prevent further damage and to discuss future kidney disease treatment options – dialysis and transplant – as soon as possible with your doctor.  He noted that the rules have changed, time spent on dialysis applies to wait time on the transplant list, decisions can be delayed.  Dr. Swanson talked about his program at ChistianaCare and the types of transplants they perform – describing the kidney transplant process.  Noting that a living donor transplant has a better chance of success over a cadaver, he encouraged anyone considering becoming a donor to reach out to christianacare.org.   He spoke of ‘chain' donation, where someone gives to a stranger, whose family or friends donate to another, until as many 16 or more transplants have taken place. John Swanson is a busy man.  Not only does he own his own gym at CrossFit Fast Factory but he is also the creator and CEO of the Granite Games.  In this episode we get a full run down of how the Games got started and why he believes it has grown to what it has over the years.  To give you an idea it started at 49 athletes and has grown to over 13,000+ with registration closing filling up in under 5 seconds.

John Swanson was an All-American Fencer at the Air Force Academy, then became a Forward Air Controller (FAC) in Vietnam and Laos. Following his combat tours, he became a T-38 Instructor Pilot and a U-2 pilot in the Air Force, then flew for Delta Airlines. He now flies fractional jets.

Rick Kaempfer just released an amazingly entertaining satirical novel: $everance.  It is the first book I've managed to finish in two years (due to my preoccupation with my crazy toddler) and I laughed out loud many times while reading it - yeah, it's that funny!  If you work in the radio business you'll love the inside view of the industry and if you're not in the media you will certainly learn a lot of eye-opening trade secrets.  He also co-wrote an earlier book (with John Swanson), The Radio Producers Handbook.  Both books cover a subject matter he knows all too well: broadcasting. Before becoming a full-time writer, Rick was a nationally recognized radio producer in Chicago for Steve Dahl & Garry Meier (1987-1991) and John Records Landecker (1993-2003).  I first met him at WLUP when he produced The Morning Loop Guys (2005).  He has also hosted his own radio show, wrote and hosted national radio specials, and currently co-owns an advertising agency in Chicago.  Rick has some amazing blogs (links are below) that I read regularly and highly recommend, plus he is also a contributing editor at Shore Magazine and a humor writer for The Beachwood Reporter.  Rick literally writes something new for public consumption every day.  I don't know how he does it all while raising three boys!
