Do you have much experience with dance outside of your own culture? Since it's International Dance Day, I want to take today's episode to focus on dance as a source of heritage and identity and how it can truly connect us across our different cultures, but I can't do it alone. My guest today is four-time Emmy Award-winning host and executive producer of the show Bare Feet, Mickela Mallozzi, who is on a mission to experience the world one dance at a time. In today's episode, Mickela and I talk about the need to be vulnerable when you're learning something new and how we have to let go of perfection so that we can genuinely be curious and learn from other cultures and experience dance through their eyes. She shares her views on the various cultural foundations of dance that are not often taught, and she shares some great stories like learning the dance with the people of the Garifuna who survived exile only to maintain, thrive, and grow their cultural heritage, including their native dances. I hope you enjoy the cultural exploration of dance in this episode, and let's celebrate International Dance Day together! What do dance, food, and travel have in common? So much! I found that out when I had the pleasure of talking to the host of PBS’s Bare Feet with Mickela Mallozzi. We discussed what it’s like to be a travel professional who currently can’t travel, why dance is so universal, and why she’s not afraid to make mistakes when she’s dancing on her TV show. Enjoy my conversation with Mickela Mallozzi on the Real Food Traveler Podcast in the player, above. Keep this podcast conversation with the host of Bare Feet with Mickela Mallozzi handy by pinning it to Pinterest. The TV show was the natural progression of Mallozzi’s personal travel experiences, which always involved connecting with people through dance. When I asked her about the commonalities of dance throughout the world, Mickela said, “It’s really the idea that through movement, people can communicate without opening their mouths. You can you read body language. Dance is a form of body language and to express joy.” For Mickela, dance is a door to connecting cultures. When talking about viewers of her show, Bare Feet with Mickela Mallozzi, she explained that she hopes people “see how much fun it is to connect with other people… And the way we connect with the people is through my language of dance and music. And what I hope it does is inspires people to travel a little differently, especially once we can travel again.” Hear about Mickela’s special series about Carnival in the Guadaloupe Islands, filmed prior to the COVID pandemic, and why now is such an important time for the episodes to run. Find out about Mickela’s newest project, #BareFeetLIVE series that provides all of us a way to connect to other people and places through dance, wherever we may be at that moment. Mickela Mallozi tells her story of growing up in an Italian immigrant home in NYC, getting into music and dance as a kid, pursuing it professionally, and then having a vision in the middle of the night for her now 4-time Emmy award winning travel show “Bare Feet with Mickela Mallozzi”. She explains her passion for dancing with strangers, and how that magically opens doors when traveling and allows her to meaningfully connect with people when she doesn't speak their language. She then talks about how she spent her life savings to produce the pilot episode, and shares her subsequent mistakes pitching the show. She explains how she honed her craft of storytelling and continued networking until eventually she struck a deal with PBS to air the show and subsequently won her first Emmy. She then takes us behind the scenes of Season 1, and explains how she got to dance in a professional Tango show on the main stage in Buenos Aires after only a week of learning tango. She then explains how Season 2 showcases the diversity of dance across the various immigrant communities in New York City, and why Bhrangra music had such an important role in her life. Next she talks about Season 3, in which she traveled to countries where she has DNA heritage and shares her experience in Uzbekistan and Morocco. Mickela then announces her brand new two-part special focusing on the Guadaloupe Islands. She also invites people on her “Bare Feet Tours” where you can travel with Mickela and experience the world through dance. Finally, she talks about her 4 th Emmy acceptance speech and how continual rejection has inspired her persistence. FULL SHOW NOTES AVAILABLE AT www.TheMaverickShow.com

In this episode, Dolores interviews Mickela Mallozzi, an Emmy Award winning host and producer of the popular travel dance TV and web series "Bare Feet®." Born and raised in Stamford, Connecticut of Italian immigrant parents, she grew up with well-preserved traditions of the Southern-Italian culture, and her appreciation for folk tradition started at a very young age. She began dancing when she was 3, started playing the piano at age 5, was trained in classical and jazz piano, played violin and flute, trained at the Stamford City Ballet School and Center Stage Dance Studio, and was choreographing and performing with prestigious companies in the Tri-State Area once she reached high school. In college, Mallozzi attended New York University (NYU) for music composition, studying abroad for two summer semesters through the NYU Florence Program and as an AIAE Programma Ponte Scholarship recipient in Rome in 2003. Inspiration from her own experiences led Mallozzi to create the Bare Feet® blog, documenting her dance adventures around the world, which then evolved into the Emmy® Award-winning TV series on public television nationwide, “Bare Feet with Mickela Mallozzi” – combining her two passions in life: travel and dance. Mickela Mallozzi is a dance instructor turned television host of the travel show called Bare Feet, which has aired on Travel and Escape and NYC Life, a PBS affiliate in New York. Starting in the Fall of 2015, Bare Feet will be nationally distributed on PBS in the US and Canada. Each episode, she travels to a new place and embeds herself into the people there through the traditions of dance. Occasionally, I speak with painters and photographers on this show, but I’ve never discussed dance — which, like food, is easily one of the most elemental and original expressions running through the blood of any culture. Through the lens of both the camera and dance, Mickela has explored Buenos Aires, Uzbekistan, Puerto Rico, Curacao, Italy, Germany, Ireland, all 50 states, and her home, New York City - and more places. She’s also the organizer of the Women’s Travel Fest, which is held annually around the end of February, this year in San Francisco. When In Roam: Conversations with Travel Writers

Let me tell you a story. Last April, I spoke at the NY Travel Festival, & I met the most amazing girl named Kelly Lewis. Kelly's the founder of Go! Girl Guides, a guidebook series that's tailored toward the specific needs of women on the road. After the festival, we went to the nearest Irish pub with my friend Masha Vapnitchnaia, & between the three of us, we came up with the idea to start a women's travel festival which has never been done before. I don't know, maybe it was the pints that inspired us... But the difference is that Kelly, Masha, & another wonderful travel blogger named Mickela Mallozzi took off with the idea & made it happen, & I'm so proud of these three gals! I recently sat down with Kelly at Hostelling International in New York to chat with her about all things travel & women's empowerment. I hope to see you at the Women's Travel Fest on March 8th, 2014 in New York, because it's going to be an inspiring event filled with kindred-spirit traveling sisters! So grab your tickets soon at www.WomensTravelFest.com or at www.GoGirlGuides.com, becuase prices go up after the New Year. Plus, it was just announced that the adorable Samantha Brown from numerous TV shows is going to be speaking as well, which I'm personally jumping up & down about! I'm looking forward to seeing you there.
