It's summer and for some that means golf. Lots of it. And Andrew Zucker tells us why, in the super-wealthy enclave of Palm Beach, the ritzy residents who usually play at their exclusive and expensive country clubs are now teeing up at a municipal course that's open to commoners. Then, not everyone is happy that summer travel season is here. We're talking specifically about Buzz Bissinger, who tells us why this is the time of year he dreads. And finally, Adam Hay-Nicholls has an incredible story that puts the adventures of Indiana Jones to shame. It's about how, during the Spanish Civil War, everyone from Spanish revolutionaries to M.I.6 agents tried to plunder the Holy Grail from a cathedral in Valencia.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Max Marshall is a writer and journalist. Raised in Texas, he attended Columbia University, where he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 2016. He served as a Princeton in Asia Media Fellow in Hanoi, Vietnam, and his work has appeared in GQ, Texas Monthly, Sports Illustrated, and the New York Times. He lives in Austin.“Among the Bros" is a harrowing and disturbing book. This book will blow your mind, each page digging deeper into the unimaginable. Except every word is true.”—Buzz Bissinger, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Mosquito Bowl and Friday Night Lights. A brilliant young investigative journalist traces a murder and a multi-million-dollar drug ring, leading to an unprecedented look at elite American fraternity life. When Max Marshall arrived on the campus of the College of Charleston in 2018, he hoped to investigate a small-time fraternity Xanax trafficking ring. Instead, he found a homicide, several student deaths, and millions of dollars circulating the Deep South. He also opened up an elite world hidden from outsiders. Behind the pop culture cliches of “Greek life” lies one of the primary breeding grounds of American power: 80 percent of Fortune 500 executives, 85 percent of Supreme Court justices, and all but four presidents since 1825 have been fraternity members. With unprecedented immersion, this book takes readers inside that bubble.Under the live oaks and Spanish moss of Travel + Leisure's “Most Beautiful Campus in America,” Marshall traces several “C of C” boys' journeys from fraternity pledges to interstate drug traffickers. The result is a true-life story of hubris, status, money, drugs, and murder—one that lifts a curtain on an ecstatic and disturbing way of life. With expert pacing and an excellent eye, he follows a never-ending party that continues after funerals and mass arrests. An addictive and haunting portrait of tomorrow's American establishment, Among the Bros is nonfiction storytelling at its finest. A couple of weeks back, the news broke that a school district in Mason City, Iowa, was using ChatGPT to implement Iowa’s ban on books that include descriptions of sex acts. One book flagged was Buzz Bissinger’s classic “Friday Night Lights.” The thing is, that book includes no such descriptions, according to the author himself. Although the district reversed course, it’s an example of how more government officials are using artificial intelligence at work, in some cases leading to restrictions on tools like ChatGPT. Marketplace’s Lily Jamali spoke with journalist Todd Feathers, who covered this recently in Wired.

Mark Weinberger didn't ask for much. All he wanted was an 80-foot yacht, a sushi chauffeur, a skinny wife, and a five-story townhome. Luckily, Mark could afford his glitzy lifestyle. He was an ear nose and throat surgeon – and not just *any* ear nose and throat surgeon – he was The Nose Doctor of Merrillville, Indiana. As it turned out, damn near everyone who walked into his clinic needed sinus surgery! And now for a note about our process. Hey, sports fans, your two favorite fanatics are back with another Sports Short. Well, not that short. Hey, Chris and Joe have a lot to say about MLB & the NFL as one season draws to a close and the other commences. Of course, our protracted absence can be blamed on Joe as he has been crying in his beer watching the Yanks and the Mets go down like The Titanic and The Hindenburg. But the guys suck it up, put on their cleats and pads, and report on MLB's new 2023 schedule and its historic rules changes. Chris is in motion in the backfield with analysis and predictions for the NFL in general, and The Jets and Giant's in particular. Joe steps up to plate, even though he belongs in AAA with Aaron Hicks, and chronicles the epic slide of The Bronx Bombers and the meteoric rise of The Atlanta Braves. Lookout New York Metropolitans! Also, Chris reviews an important hardball book, "3 Nights in August" by Buzz Bissinger. And you best believe we give some love to the NHL. And finally stick around for the bottom if the ninth, when we give our rambunctious recommendations.

This week, Ashley and Mike are joined by three great guests: first, Buzz Bissinger, author of Friday Night Lights, who tells us why he's preparing to leave America; second, Flora Gill, who explains how a dating show where everyone is naked has conquered the U.K. (and why it's also very heartwarming); and finally, Joseph Bullmore, who tells us about the world's most Googled person—the millionaire misogynist spreading his toxic gospel to young men via Hustler's University. All this and more make this week's show one you won't want to miss.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Renowned photographer and frequent National Geographic contributor Robert Clark joins the podcast to talk about growing up in Hays Kansas and his early love of sports photography that would create a young determined photographer working his way through multiple newspapers on the way to an extremely storied career. During our conversation Robert talks about how the opportunity to shoot a story on a high school football team in Odessa Texas early on in his career would end up becoming the best selling book by Buzz Bissinger titled Friday Night Lights and help him on his way to creating a name for himself. After moving to New York to pursue a better understanding of lighting and studio work, Robert began to find his place in the industry, working with everyone from Vanity Fair and Time to his long relationship with the Geographic. Known for his versatility in shooting everything from beautiful still life imagery to photojournalistic storytelling, Robert has gone on to shoot over 50 stories for National Geographic, more magazine covers than you could keep track of, and continues to be inspired by not only his contemporaries, but the young talent he sees coming up. Robert Clark // “If i could do one thing in my career over, i would have moved there for a year.” . Welcome to @thesearcherpodcast, conversations with storytellers, creatives, healers, and others in search of what it all means. On this episode of the show, I speak with National Geographic photographer Robert Clark, a dear friend and mentor. Robert was one of the first occupants of a Brooklyn, NY, building known in the photo world as the Kibbutz, which after 9-11 became a temporary home for some of the best photojournalists in the world. Not long after meeting Rob, he found me a place inside this building, where I met some of these photographers. It was one of the most magical and inspiring periods of my life, and it was all thanks to Rob. Based in New York City, Robert Clark has photographed more than 50 stories for National Geographic and is the author of five monographs. . In 1988, when Robert Clark was in his early twenties, he traveled to Odessa, Texas, to create a visual element for a book about a high school football team. That book was Buzz Bissinger's Friday Night Lights―the chronicle of a season with the Permian Panthers, one of the state's winningest teams of all time. . About twenty photos appeared in Bissinger's book, but Clark shot 137 rolls of film during his time with the Panthers. Friday Night Lives collects dozens of the never-before-seen images, taking us back to the team, the city, and that dramatic season. The archival photos, published in 2020 on the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of Bissinger's bestseller, capture intimate moments among the players and their families and classmates, as well as the wider world of Odessa. . Now the players have grown up. Friday Night Lives also includes Clark's portraits of key Panthers figures at a later age, documenting complex lives of beauty and struggle. Boobie Miles, the star fullback sidelined by injury, is here, along with Coach Gaines and others. In his heartfelt foreword, best-selling author Hanif Abdurraqib describes how Clark's photos rehumanize the players, reminding us of the truth of their young lives before their stories became nationally known in print, film, and television. . Will Leitch founded Deadspin nearly 14 years ago. Since 2008, Leitch has written and worked outside of the site, most recently as a contributing editor at New York Magazine, a national correspondent for MLB, and the host of “The Will Leitch Show” on Sports Illustrated TV. “…During the years I actively ran [Deadspin] — now more than a decade in the past — I was ostensibly in charge of figuring out what was coming next on the sports internet; I was the supposed leader of the blog-barbarians at the gate, all those bulls (and we were all bulls) running roughshod over the Traditional Sports Media…” Don and Will discuss how Blacktable.com led to Deadspin.com, the Deadspin of today, Will's writing of today, and revisit the infamous and “rather festive” 2008 Costas NOW (HBO) discussion where Buzz Bissinger, the author of “Friday Night Lights,” berated Will as being “…sort of like Jimmy Olsen on Percocet," and the sports blogosphere of the early aughts being “dedicated to cruelty … journalistic dishonesty, and … speed.” They've both come around since then. Will lives in Athens, GA, has written four books (with a fifth on the way), and can be found on Twitter @williamfleitch.

Hey there CNF buddies, hope you're havin' a CNFin' great week. What fuels you? What gets your engine revved up? What makes you redlined? For me it's an interview and, dare I say, a riff… It's the Creative Nonfiction Podcast, the show where I speak to the world's best artists about creating works of nonfiction, leaders in the world of narrative journalism, memoir, documentary film, radio, and essay and try tease out the origins and habits so that you can apply those tools of mastery to your own work. For Episode 84, I welcome Adam Valen Levinson. Adam's a smart guy, a real smart guy, and he's written the wonderful book “The Abu Dhabi Bar Mitzvah: Fear and Love in the Modern Middle East.” Flip the book over and here's a blurb from Buzz Bissinger, “Adam Valen Levinson is too young to have written a book this good: eloquent, analytical, funny, sad.” Still not impressed? Peter Theroux said, “A fabulously written primer on the darkest countries in the world—or not so dark, as Valen Levinson shows with his toolkit of sharp sociology and brilliant humor.” Well, I feel inadequate. Here's a little more about Adam from his dust jacket bio: He is a journalist and travel writer whose work focuses on human stories in conflict areas. His work has appeared in numbers outlets, including VICE, the Paris Review, Al Jazeera, and Haaretz. He is an affiliate of the Middle East Institute in Washington DC and a Fellow at the Center for Cultural Sociology at Yale University, studying humor as a key to cultural understanding. Damn. I make donuts and talk to people. Okay, so here's that part where I ask you that if you dig the show, consider subscribing and sharing it with a fellow CNFer. Leave an honest rating on iTunes, which takes a few seconds, or leave a rating and a review and in exchange, I'll coach up a piece of your work, up to 2,000 words. That's the deal. That's like a $100 value once I'm all done because I read things three times and mark things up like it's my job.

Fight #1 is that Chris likes to say there was some... impropriety when they got together and Rebecca hates when he says that. Now here’s the thing - when they got together, Rebecca was adamant that she did not want to date anyone, so Chris had to be extremely stealthy about expressing interest in her, so fight #2 is about whether or not Rebecca was being dense about Chris expressing interest. Fight #3 is about the term “greengrocer.” But fight #4 - the big one - is that Rebecca wants to get married but not have kids and Chris wants to have kids but not get married!! Good lord!!! This is a PICKLE! We also accidentally create a great starter guide to Mormonism. We get into Chris’s divorce, Rebecca’s fear of pregnancy, and my insane hormones. Also here’s the insane Buzz Bissinger story.
Joe Nocera at the University of Louisville Kentucky Author Forum on April 18, 2016. Interviewed by Buzz Bissinger.
Twenty-five years ago Buzz Bissinger went in search of the Friday night lights – to chronicle the high school football ritual that can bring together a small American town. The result of this journey that took him to Odessa, Texas became the New York Times bestseller “Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream”, a book that would later be adapted into both a movie and TV show of the same name. The book shows America’s love of football while exposing its racism and greed, which is just as prevalent today but often overlooked. Since then Bissinger has not shied away from controversial subjects, including his own life. He has written about his struggle as a shopaholic which has included spending over $500,000 on high-fashion clothing in just two years, as well as his love of wearing women’s clothing. In his very touching book “Father’s Day: Across America with an Unusual Dad and His Extraordinary Son” he explores his relationship with his son Zach, who is savant challenged by serious intellectual deficits, as they take a road trip across the U.S.. As a contributor for Vanity Fair he has written very revealing profiles - of the disgraced journalist Stephen Glass, post scandal Tiger Woods, Oscar nominated Bradley Cooper and maybe his most memorable - Caitlyn Jenner in which he chronicles “the fears and doubts, love and courage, and tensions and traumas involved in the transition”.
Author Buzz Bissinger stopped by to talk about the 25th anniversary edition of 'Friday Night Lights.' This book gave an up close and personal look at the high pressure sport of high school football. The book inspired a critically acclaimed film and television series. Bonus track: Don't poke the #Olicity fan base!
Buzz Bissinger, a Pulitzer Prize winner, has written for Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, GQ and more. He is the author of several books, including Friday Night Lights. "It’s quiet. And I really felt I needed that quiet. People say, 'Well anger was your edge, and agitation was your edge, and that’s going to hurt your writing.' I don’t know, maybe. It may be that in order to live a happier life you become a shittier writer. I don't know. But I just couldn't live in that fashion anymore, I just couldn't. It would've destroyed my marriage. It was destroying me." Thanks to this week's sponsors. The Longform App is now available. Apply for the TinyLetter Writers Residency by September 26. On this edition of High School Football America, host Jeff Fisher talks with three of the top coaches in the country about a wide variety of topics. First Fisher talks with J.T. Curtis, head coach of John Curtis Christian School in Louisiana. Curtis, who is second on the all-time wins list for coaches in America with 520 victories, led his school to a "mythical" national championship this year, according to multiple media outlets. High School Football America honored John Curtis and Allen (Texas) as co-national champs in its final Top 25 National Poll. Curtis also talks about last week's decision by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to split the state's private and public schools into separate championship categories beginning with the 2013 season. Fisher's second guest is Blake Feldt, the new head coach at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas. Permian is best known for being the school that Buzz Bissinger wrote about in his award winning 1988 book entitled Friday Night Lights. Fisher's final guest is Art Walker, head coach at North Allegheny High School in western Pennsylvania. Walker, who is also the head coach of the Pennsylvania All-Stars in this June's Big 33 Football Classic, talks about winning two of the state's last three Class 4A football titles. Walker also gives his perspective on public vs. private. Walker also coached Pittsburgh Central Catholic to a Pennsylvania 4A title in 2004. He's known for giving an insider's in-depth look at sports; Cardinals baseball strategy with Three Nights in August (when he told the story of the 2003 three game series between the Cardinals and Cubs from Tony LaRussa's perspective) and the intensity of high school football in Friday Night Lights. But, recently Buzz Bissinger turned the pen on himself and wrote Father's Day - a raw look at raising premature twins, one of which has brain damage. In this conversation, Bissinger not only talks about a poignant moment at Six Flags St. Louis featured in that new book, he discusses Cardinal nation (made up of what he calls the "Best fans in baseball"), recent changes in the Cardinals clubhouse (and where he thinks Albert Pujols should've went) and the unusual evolution of the care of premature babies. It's an intriguing talk that has multiple connections to Missouri, especially St. Louis.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Buzz Bissinger is the author of Friday Night Lights, named one of the best sports books ever written by Sports Illustrated. He's a contributor to Vanity Fair, The Daily Beast, and his new book is Father's Day. Buzz joins Kevin in studio to talk about the reporting process for Father's Day, and the best writing advice he's ever received.
Buzz Bissinger joins Drew to talk about CostasNOW, Friday Night Lights, Moneyball, and more.
This week we head back to West Texas to cover another film adapted Buzz Bissinger’s best-selling book "Friday Night Lights." Unlike the rock-and-roll MTV version, this picture is more of a direct biopic. With Peter Berg at the helm, we can't help but be drawn in emotionally to its raw depiction of life chasing High School football glory. Enjoy this conversation about one of our favorite sports movies ever. This week we enlist the help of listener J.B. Huffman to celebrate the start of football season by discussing one of our favorite movies featuring the sport, and our first of two episodes on films that adapted Buzz Bissinger’s best-selling book "Friday Night Lights." There's a lot more than just teenage antics going on in this film, and much of what it calls out about Texas HS football culture was ahead of its time.
