Air humping in leg warmers meets journalistic malfeasance and everyone's lives are ruined. But hey! Jaime Lee is hot, so I guess that's ok. Hailed as the film that ended Travolta's career (briefly, lets be honest) and set Jamie Lee back a few years, Perfect is anything but. Its way too long for such a paper thin plot and is stuffed with repeated unnecessary and irrelevant scenes that keep it dragging you into the depths of your sofa. Pedantic would be an understatement. But poorly acted is not how we would describe it. At worst, the acting is "meh", "whatevs" levels aside from Jaime Lee who is pretty darn good here. Even Travolta who we love to bash on did just fine. It's not the actors who are at fault here. What IS wild about this is how heavily involved Rolling Stones magazine is, while also managing to paint the rag in a very bad light. Its somehow screaming out to us in 1985 "WE DON'T ACTUALLY DO GOOD JOURNALISM! DON'T TRUST US!". At no point, would I have wanted to place a subscription after watching this so...good job? The plot is baffling and falls into the nonsensical realm of stinkers. Its border-line idiot plot, but also manages to make zero sense and is clear that no one involved knew anything about either federal espionage law, the FISA act, or subpoenas. Yes I know that maybe the majority of Americans don't but we aren't writing movies about that material either. A lot of the film's dumbness could have been avoided with just a single call to an attorney. Lastly, the film manages to step on its own John Thomas. In the climax of their relationship, Jamie Lee's Jesse Wilson deletes the article that Travolta's Adam Lawrence was writing (poorly) about gym life and how his main focus is a sexually liberated Linda who uses the gym as a place to meet dudes, in her endless pursuit of perfection. Jesse declares it will ruin her life just like a reporter once ruined her own - EXCEPT Jesse has never even met Linda from what we know AND Linda wanted the article to be exactly about that part of her life. The whole thing could have been a statement article on the decade and changed Linda's life for the better but instead Jesse destroys the whole thing (except she never saved the file on the 1985 word processor - oops) and everyone's future along with it and we're supposed to appreciate her position?!?! No she had the power to change LA and thus America's viewpoint of women and what a woman should be, likely allowing Harvey Weinstein 30 years in the business. #metoo could have happened 20 years earlier (saving a lot of people a lot of pain) if stupid Jesse had just kept her grubby little mitts off Adams work. But then Adam does something equally terrible - he rewrites the story as a fluff piece just to get back in Jesse's drawers. He should know better than Jesse about what the repercussions of that original article would have done but instead trashes the whole thing so he could get some gym rat ass. And that's worse that Jesse's actions - she's just a gym instructor. He's a crummy Ben Fong-Torres. Save America? Nah, sweet sweet leotard's crumpled by the bed for Adam! The movie sucks. Skip it.
Musician Taj Mahal talks to rock music journalist Ben Fong-Torres and performs songs from his extraordinary career.
"A girl I became friends with on a school trip in high school fell asleep on my shoulders on the ride back." "I'm still coasting on that memory." Crimson and Clover and Crystal Blue Persuasion were on the same album. I was 11. It was one of my first and biggest music memories of "my" music...and perhaps it was the first record I wore out. Literally. Listening to Top 40 radio was a constant in the car. At home, the biggest memory and influence was my dad's 1962 Ray Charles' record, Modern Sounds of Country and Western Music. Side one 1. "Bye Bye Love" 2. "You Don't Know Me" 3. "Half as Much" 4. "I Love You So Much It Hurts" 5. "Just a Little Lovin' (Will Go a Long Way)" 6. "Born to Lose" Side two 1. "Worried Mind" 2. "It Makes No Difference Now" 3. "You Win Again" 4. "Careless Love" 5. "I Can't Stop Loving You" 6. "Hey, Good Lookin'" My early music experiences consisted of great rhythm and harmonies. My sister loved The Lettermen and later on, The Carpenters. For me, Ray Charles was hard to beat. For a little kid, not yet a teenager, I was falling in love with music. The albums were played on a piece of furniture. Homes with music had stereo consoles. Junior high brought on a new music-related interest, hi-fi stereo gear. That fueled even deeper and broader interest in records. Tons of music memories have provided a good coasting surface for my life. Watching the documentary about Ben Fong-Torres, famous music editor for Rolling Stone magazine brought back lots of memories of the 1970s and the music that once dominated my life. But music is just part of the memories I coast on. Words increasingly mattered, and not just the song lyrics. I devoured Ben Fong-Torres' writing. And Hunter S. Thompson. And Cameron Crowe. Their writing wasn't like anything familiar to me. Ben wrote about music and musicians. Hunter, well, he wrote about lots of stuff. Popular culture. Politics. I didn't care that much about the topics, but I enjoyed how Hunter wrote. Crowe, like Ben, he was writing about musicians. I read their stuff regularly adding a new coasting surface for memories - words. Music. Technology. Words. The convergence of these 3 things happened in the 1970s. The song remains the same. Memories reflected my future. And my present. Memories don't determine the present or the future, but they influence it. Our memories are part of us. What has happened to us helps define us. The guy coasting on the memory of the girl who fell asleep on his shoulder indicates how something so small can linger for so long...and even fuel us along the way. It's not about coasting in the sense that we don't do anything. Not putting any effort into anything. I don't know what memories you may leverage for coasting, but it did make me think of what memories might be fueling me. I began the conversation with memories of music because music has accompanied every era of my life so far. I don't suspect it's going to stop until my life stops. But I'm not coasting on it. Any of it. It's not a driving force so much as a soundtrack, a key but minor player in the grand scheme of things. I started thinking of the memory this guy shared and wondering if I had any such memories. I'm not at a loss for pivotal memories, but I'm not sure I've got any single memory that fuels me like that. One of my first thoughts was about family and faith. And not separately, but how connected they are for me. I've long thought that I hit the lottery when it came to being born into a Christian home where I was taught the Bible and where I learned about God. And myself. From grandparents to parents to old men and old women, I was fortunate enough to have great teachers. I didn't have to go searching for God or the truth. It was handed to me on a platter. I only had to read, listen, learn and figure out on my own whether I'd embrace it or not. It wasn't about indoctrination as much as it was about exp...

Not many people get a backstage pass to history, but Ben Fong-Torres has. As a writer and music editor for Rolling Stone magazine, Fong-Torres stood at the center of an era of rock and roll from which acts like Bob Dylan, The Doors, the Grateful Dead and Elton John emerged, and his writing was so revered by musicians that Fong-Torres was often the only journalist bands would talk to. A new documentary by Suzanne Joe Kai taps into Fong-Torres' personal archives and includes interviews with him as well as some of his famous subjects to tell the story of how Fong-Torres, the Bay Area-born son of Chinese immigrants, found himself in the middle of the cultural zeitgeist. We'll talk to Fong-Torres about the film, which will be shown at the upcoming Mill Valley Film Festival.

American radio legend Pat O'Day, a huge influence and dear friend, passed away a year ago today and I'm constantly reminded of his brilliance. Enjoy this snippet from Pat's onstage introduction of Herman's Hermits at the Seattle Center Coliseum in July 1967. O'Day's KJR dominated Seattle radio and Pat's concert business was a huge success. Here, Pat takes time to acknowledge and thank the people who made it possible. Author Robin Brunet wrote this tribute to my late friend in his book Red Robinson: The Last Broadcast, from Friesen Press. Pat would want me to mention it's out on Amazon Kindle at amzn.to/3dMGkK5 "Like Robinson, O'Day distinguished himself from other top-rated deejays in Seattle by possessing that 'magic something' of being able to talk to his listeners as if they were old friends. Since first going on the air in Astoria, Oregon in 1957, he understood that any radio station should strive to help listeners create a theatre of the mind, and in the book 'The Hits Just Keep Coming' by Ben Fong Torres, his communication prowess is revealed in a brief broadcast excerpt; "Number One in Seattle, this is KJR, and is this great 'Soul and Inspiration,' the Righteous Brothers, 75 degrees from All-American, All-Request Radio. My soul and inspiration is Jerry Kaye, who, on a warm day like today, he's in the newsroom, and he's taken all his clothes off. He's sitting on the teletype, and the machine is printing the farm news on his behind. Let's see if I can read it. It says: There's a difference between fryers, and that's why Washington Fryers are easily the freshest of all chickens." Torres notes that in 30 seconds, O'Day delivered an intro and identified the record, plugged his station, gave a basic weather report, mentioned a fellow deejay, and conjured a visual image via a joke that tied seamlessly into live commercial copy. Extend that 30 seconds to an entire broadcast, and repeat this degree of off-the-cuff creativity everyday for years, and that's why O'Day, Robinson, and many other deejays of their generation are respected as masters of the medium." Ladies and gentlemen... Pat O'Day!

Today Chanty tells Lynx and listeners the story of BEN FONG- TORRES. We’ve been getting some requests to do another episode on a male Muse and/ or Groupie so listen up to see why we[...] The post EP 58: Ben Fong-Torres appeared first on Muses and Stuff Podcast.
When Ben Fong-Torres' father immigrated to the United States from China, his surname was Fong, but he changed it to Torres and posed as a Filipino in order to avoid prosecution under the Chinese Exclusion Act which restricted Chinese immigration. Ben seems to have a pedigree totally of his own making. He graduated from San Francisco State in the mid-sixties and went on to become the senior editor for Rolling Stone magazine and author of books on Top 40 radio, the Doors, the Grateful Dead, and the Eagles. On this week's show, we talk about some of the classic interviews he's conducted for Rolling Stone and the awards he's won for magazine writing.
From 2011: I know The Eagles story is a remarkable one, but I’d be lying if I said I was a huge fan. I’m not. I respect their incredible output and enduring success, but the music never grabbed me. So why are we here today? Well, the new coffee table book celebrating the band’s lengthy career was written by Ben Fong-Torres, one of America’s most successful magazine writers. I wanted to talk to him and if it meant the subject had to be The Eagles: Taking It to the Limit, then so be it.
Thu grew up in a multi-cultural musical melting pot of Vietnamese folk music, R&B, and Broadway. In college, Thu received classical voice training under the private tutelage of Mr. Merrill Shea, on faculty at the Boston Conservatory of Music. She continued her musical endeavors in various A Capella groups, recorded for famed Vietnamese composer Bao Quoc Hoang, and performed professionally around San Diego in an Indie Soul Band called Curbside Vinyl. Thu's journey through the vast world of music landed her at the doorstep of Jazz, accompanied by her innate attraction towards sass, big sultry vocals, and musical nuance. She has studied Jazz theory and performance with highly regarded performers and instructors, including Jono Kornfeld, Rebeca Mauleon, David Hardiman Jr., Dena DeRose, and Madeline Eastman. Thu has performed in private events and at various San Francisco and Bay Area venues, including the historic Sir Francis Drake Hotel, Mr. Tipple's Recording Studio, Angelicas, and Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse, and with ensembles led by the Diablo Jazz Company, Grant Levin, Don Alberts, Denny Berthiaume, Walter Bankovitch, Lukas Vesely, Neil Kelly, and Ben Fong-Torres. Her vocal styling is infused with the artistic sensibilities from a unique musical upbringing, and heavily influenced by Sarah Vaughan, Helen Merrill, Nancy Wilson, Amy Winehouse, and Ella Fitzgerald.http://www.thuhomusic.com/
Today's Guest: Kevin Avery, author, editor, Conversations With Clint, Everything is An Afterthought Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of Rolling Stone magazine writers and past Mr. Media guests such as Ben Fong-Torres, David Wild and Parke Puterbaugh who are hanging on every word today as they seal their own unpublished interviews in air-tight mayonnaise jars and hide them under my bed… in the NEW new media capital of the world, St. Petersburg, Florida! Order 'Conversations with Clint: Paul Nelson's Lost Interviews with Clint Eastwood, 1979-1983' by clicking the book cover above! I completely get Kevin Avery – I think. Growing up, he admired the writing and reviews of a long-time Rolling Stone journalist named Paul Nelson. He even wrote a fan letter to the magazine about Nelson; it was published in the April 30, 1981 issue. Personally, while I was a regular reader of Rolling Stone in those days, Nelson’s name and work didn’t have quite the same impression upon me. In fact, I didn’t remember it at all. KEVIN AVERY audio excerpt: "Paul Nelson had a fascinating life. If we worked together, it would not have been the same book; being a very private man, Paul would not have revealed everything that I found out." And, sadly for Avery and other Nelson fans, the legendary writer eventually faded away, a victim of his own inner demons and compulsions. Order 'Everything Is an Afterthought: The Life and Writings of Paul Nelson' by clicking the book cover above But Avery never forgot him. And when he relocated from Salt Lake City to Brooklyn in February 2006, Avery sent his idol a note suggesting they work together to compile a “best of” collection of Nelson’s work. Nelson never responded – directly. I’ll let Avery tell you what happened in a moment. But it won’t spoil the suspense to say that Avery is the author-slash-editor of two new Nelson books, Everything is an Afterthought: The Life and Writings of Paul Nelson, and Conversations with Clint: Paul Nelson’s Lost Interviews with Clint Eastwood 1979-1983. There is a truly compelling story here -- Paul Nelson rediscovered -- whether you’re interest in pop music, film or the mysteries of the writing life. And Everything has a genuine bonus: the foreword is by my own literary idol, Nick Tosches. Ben Fong-Torres got his start as a professional journalist in 1968 working as a reporter for a fledgling publication called Rolling Stone. He was later made senior editor of that bi-weekly. His profiles of and interviews with Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Ray Charles and Linda Ronstadt to name just a few are required reading for music fans and students of music journalism. He currently has a book out about the band Little Feat called Willin'.Mr. Fong-Torres and I talk about his new book, the early days at Rolling Stone, his experiences covering Bob Dylan's Planet Waves tour, his interview with Jim Morrison (only weeks before Jim's passing) and his broadcast career, begun in the heyday of free-form radio.
