An unexpected breast cancer diagnosis at 33 years old empowered Jessica Baladad to channel her experience into a mission that's changing the way women advocate for their medical care. The six-year cancer survivor created Feel For Your Life, a free mobile app that shows women how to perform self exams, track their progress and set monthly reminders. It's the first of its kind created by a breast cancer patient and has been downloaded tens of thousands of times all over the world. In 2024, Jessica implemented an AI feature into the app to help patients interpret and better understand pathology reports from their breast cancer screenings. Jessica's history with breast cancer catalyzed her dedication to build Feel For Your Life. She's the fourth generation on her paternal side of the family to be diagnosed with the disease, and yet, no known gene mutation has been found in her lineage. She first learned how to do a self breast exam after having a benign tumor removed at 18, and nearly 15 years later, Jessica was diagnosed with Stage 2B invasive ductal carcinoma after performing a routine self exam in the shower. She underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, 24 rounds of radiation, a hysterectomy and 10-hour flap reconstruction. Since launching the app, Jessica has expanded her advocacy into healthcare reform. She's helped write legislation in the State of Tennessee to promote risk reducing measures against cancer and disease. Billed as the Feel For Your Life Act, it requires high school students to learn about self breast exams, testicular exams and skin exams. Jessica has been featured on Good Morning America, Tank's Good News, USA Today, Yahoo News, UpWorthy and several national and international media outlets. She's worked with the NFL on their Crucial Catch Campaign to promote cancer screenings, received the Hometown Hero Award from Ponce Law on Nashville's Fox 17, has been recognized by the National Breast Cancer Foundation for her leadership initiatives and was the recipient of the Mona Lisa Foundation Grant in 2023. When Jessica isn't working on patient advocacy, she enjoys traveling and exploring new places, attending sporting events with her husband and photographing animals.

I don't understand it. And you start Google things, and it doesn't make sense. So I took the guesswork out of that.   Jessica Baladad  06:01 Yeah. So we even have a little term in the breast cancer community called scanxiety, where you are afraid of getting scans and exams. I mean, they're necessary, and we joke about it, but it's real that we have that fear of getting scanned,   Jessica Baladad  And so, you know, it's...people have a lot of different feelings about it, but ultimately, I want women to understand how their screenings work, how the pathology is done, and what they can do to empower themselves to get through that fear, because knowledge helps overcome that anxiety.   ABOUT JESSICA BALADAD: Jessica Baladad, six-year cancer survivor, is the creator of Feel For Your Life, a free mobile application that provides resources on how to perform self breast exams and when to get screenings, while allowing users to track and monitor their changes and set reminders. This year more than ever, the NFL had their eyes set on a female audience. This came with the addition of player's girlfriends in the stands like Alix Earle, Taylor Swift and Hailee Seinfield. Alix Earle was even a presenter at the NFL Honors ceremony in Vegas a few days ahead of the superbowl and her boyfriend is Miami Dolphin's wide receiver Braxton Berrios.  While in Vegas this week, there was chatter that the NFL expected this to be the most watched Super Bowl in history. Thanks to the female fans tuning in for a look at Taylor Swift. And boy was there a show! She had Blake Lively, Ice Spice and Lana Del Rey in her box and there was even betting sites that had entire bets based around how many times the camera would pan to her during the game.  There was also a 49'ers wife who made headlines, Krysten You-Sh-Check. Wife of full back Kyle You-Sh-Check. She went viral online for creating custom pieces to wear to games in support of Kyle. In fact, she was propositioned by Brittany Mahomes to create a look for her and she sent Brittany a jacket for Taylor Swift, as well. Stressing that it was no pressure. If Taylor wanted to wear it then great.  Taylor showed up to one of the Kansas City play-off games in the jacket and the story went viral. Because of the exposure from this moment, she turned this into a licensing deal with the NFL (according to USA Today). She inked the first women-led licensing deal with the NFL which means she can sell merch using their team logos. She told Today that this has been in the works for years but the exposure of Taylor Swift wearing one of her creations catapulted her.  A puffer vest that she is auctioning for the National Breast Cancer Foundation currently has a bid of $52,000+.  This also leads us to the shift towards female-focused advertising at the super bowl this year. It typically caters to men or tows an even line. But this year, they knew the Swift fans were watching.  The first commercial to hit the screen was for the upcoming Wicked movie featuring Ariana Grande. I could be mistaken but you don't often see movie trailers as commercials at the Superbowl. Especially one for a movie coming out almost a year later and one that is a musical adaptation with two female leads.  This was also the first year that two beauty brands went toe-to-toe. E.l.f.and NYX. Both very different commercials. I am fascinated at Elf's aggressive approach to marketing the last year or so. They had a superbowl spot last year with Jennifer Coolidge. They built a world in Roblox and were all over the new Mean Girls movie. In a way that was off-putting, in my opinion. I love elf but it was the first time I felt an adverse reaction to them. Their commercial featured a Judge Judy bit.  The NYX commercial was simpler and featured Cardi B. It was to promote their duck lips plumper. At the end, it showed a QR code and the longer commercial was much more NSFW. I actually liked the ad. It felt like a secret treat for those who got to the QR code quick enough.  Another commercial that I loved was with Beyonce for Verizon. At the end of it, she hinted at new music. A few moments later, she dropped two new country singles, "Texas Hold 'Em" and "16 Carraiges". There is a rise of “off-camera” experiences when it comes to the best superbowl ads. People know that other's are watching the superbowl on their phones Thank you for reviewing the podcast and sharing it with a friend! Tune in every Monday for a pop culture and marketing deep dive.

No matter where you live or who you are, breast cancer  could affect your life.   —Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP, FGSA, FAAN   For nearly 4 decades now, October has been recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. No matter where you live or who you are, breast cancer could affect your life.    Understanding what's normal for you and recognizing the warning signs of breast cancer are the best things you can know about and look for each month by doing your monthly self-breast exams.    ▶️ 4 Warning Signs of Breast Cancer and How to Do a Self-Breast Exam   Key points covered in this episode:   ✔️Warning Sign #1: A change in the breast or nipple appearance Any unexplained change in the shape or size of the breast; especially if it's only on one side – this includes your breast getting larger or smaller  Asymmetry – it is common for one breast to be larger than the other, so this is more about a recent onset of asymmetry. Skin of the nipple, areola, or nipple becoming red, swollen, scaly, or developing ridges that looks like an orange peel Dimpling anywhere ✔️Warning Sign #2: Any nipple discharge – particularly clear, bloody, or milky discharge If you are not breastfeeding, your nipples should not have any discharge; this may not be linked to breast cancer but needs to be checked out by your provider. ✔️Warning Sign #3: Change in how the breast or nipple looks or feels A change in skin texture or an enlargement of the pores of the skin of the breast (similar to the texture of an orange peel) Nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in the under arms or near the breast A lump in the breast should always be investigated – it may or may not be cancer ✔️Warning Sign #4: Feeling a Lump Lumps that are concerning for breast cancer are usually harder than a frozen pea, do not move around, and continue to grow in size.  See your healthcare provider right away if you feel any kind of lump in your breast, armpit, or behind or around your nipple   How To Do A Breast Self-Exam Start at age 18  Try to do the exam at the same time each month You want to know your breasts so that you know what your breasts normally feel like and can identify anything new Two steps: Looking and Feeling LOOKING Stand in front of a mirror with your arms by your side. Look at both of your breasts and see if you see any changes in the shape, size, any dimples or any irregularities on the nipple, areola, or breast itself. Then raise your hands over your head and look again for those same things Then put your palms on your hips and gently flex your chest muscles. Look for any dimpling or puckering anywhere on either breast. FEELING You can do this in the shower or lying down Raise one arm and use the flat part of your other hand's three middle fingers to make small circular motions all around the breast and armpit area. Check the entire breast, armpit area and from your collarbone to breastbone with light, medium, and firm pressure.  Do this for both breasts. Squeeze each nipple to make sure there is no discharge or pain. What if you have implants or scar tissue from surgery? If you have implants, you'll also need to feel around the breast to find the edges of the implant, then press firmly inwards around the edges to check for lumps or abnormalities under or around the implant. If you have scars from a previous surgery, feel around the scar to see if anything is new or unusual.  Anything new or any changes should be evaluated by your provider, so make an appointment if you question anything or are unsure.  Get your free copy of any of the National Breast Cancer Foundation's Educational Guides to learn more!    #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #breastCancerAwareness #BreastCancer    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About MelissaBPhD   Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP, FGSA, FAAN. Laura is a breast cancer survivor on a mission to increase the breast health IQ of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) and underserved communities.   In our podcast we speak about the everyday inequities which exist in our health systems, globally and how knowing what to ask and who to ask for support can quite literally, save your life. As a charitable foundation, Touch4Life has a two-pronged focus to ensure that physicians deliver the breast healthcare that Black and BIPOC women need and that women know and advocate for the breast health that they deserve.   Raised in Temple Hills, MD, and a lifelong MD resident, Laura recognised the disparities in breast cancer detection, treatment and survivorship that exist for Black and brown women in the United States–dying at a 41% higher rate than white women and determined to change that statistic.  Sadly racial inequities in health systems exist in New Zealand and many other countries too. Laura has been a healthcare executive at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield and UnitedHealthcare for over 15 years, she has served as a member of the Duke University Fuqua School of Business Healthcare Alumni Advisory Board, a certified financial officer of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Chair of the Health and Human Services Facet of The Columbia (MD) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, Member and Ambassador of United Way of Central Maryland Executive Council, Patient Advocate Advisory Board Member at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Ambassador of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and Certified American Cancer Society Health Equity Ambassador Link. With me today is the fabulous Shelly Horton. Shelly is a journalist, Channel 9 presenter, keynote speaker, emcee, the founder of ShellShocked Media and she is passionate about normalising conversations and education on the topic of perimenopause. You're in for a treat today as Shelly openly and humorously shares her journey with perimenopause and why she is an out-and-proud peri warrior.    Shelly has been a long-time advocate for women's health, publicly speaking up to destigmatise topics such as a woman's choice to be childfree, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), dense breasts, depression and peri/menopause.   She is an ambassador for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Too Good, Pink Hope and HER Mental Health. Shelly is also a member of the International Menopause Society and has way too much going on to let perimenopause get in the way!   With such a lack of education and discussion on the topic of perimenopause, Shelly had no idea what it was until it hit her. In this conversation, Shelly talks about her experience with depression and anxiety and how most of the symptoms of perimenopause can be passed off as something else. This leaves many women feeling isolated, confused, misdiagnosed and in a terrible state of health. Shelly shares her advice for women to talk about what they are experiencing and the importance of finding a GP who has expertise in perimenopause.   We talk about the need to educate all genders about perimenopause, which Shelly is doing alongside Dr Ginni Mansberg through their incredible course, Don't Sweat It. Given that so many women are in vital positions of leadership, Shelly shares why it's crucial to implement perimenopause and menopause policies in the workplace. We talk about not just ticking the box, but actually educating and building awareness on what women really go through.    Shelly is doing an incredible leading the conversation on this taboo topic, and I know you're going to really enjoy this episode. I hope it inspires to take action for own health and start building awareness in your community so that women's health is prioritised in the way it should be.      LINKS Resources mentioned: Don't Sweat It: https://dontsweatit.com.au Don't Sweat It Retreat: https://dontsweatit.com.au/hamilton-island-retreat/ Find a menopause doctor: https://www.menopause.org.au/health-info/find-an-ams-doctor Connect with Shelly: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shellyhorton1/?originalSubdomain=au Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shellyhorton1/?hl=en Don't Sweat It LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/don-t-sweat-it-menopause-in-the-workplace     Connect with Julie: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/julie-hyde/ Instagram: @juliehydeleads Website: https://juliehyde.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CW: The spoiler segment features discussions on gun violence and mental health. This mix could burn a hole in anyone! Turn up the volume because we're discussing Name Brand Orange Soda: The Musical aka One Tree Hill S3E15: Just Watch the Fireworks. We have so much to discuss with A Simple Alias' Bree Leach, who is joining us once again to discuss this full-circle moment! The time capsule is mysteriously released and the video recordings stream throughout Tree Hill High. While Whitey (Barry Corbin) and Principal Turner (Shawn Shepard) race to turn off the videos, students get a glimpse of a few recordings: Nathan (James Lafferty) said that marrying Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz) was the worst decision he ever made; Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) shared that he wanted to get close to Dan (Paul Johansson) in order to finally beat him; Brooke (Sophia Bush) flashed the camera and also said that she will one day probably be married to someone like Mouth (Lee Norris), or Senator McFadden; and Lucas and Mouth's old friend Jimmy Edwards (Colin Fickes) shared how he hates this school and that everyone in it is a loser. But it's not all doom and gloom because Peyton (Hilarie Burton Morgan) also organizes a Friends with Benefit concert at Tric to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation, featuring performances by Jack's Mannequin, Fall Out Boy, and Haley James Scott! Plus, Naley discusses their insecurities and Keith (Craig Sheffer) asks Lucas if he can adopt him. We also have some mysteries such as: Why does Dan have a ledger (seriously, what is even happening in this storyline)? And who opened the time capsule on One Tree Hill?  In this episode, we also discuss: The episode's namesake, “Just Watch the Fireworks,” by Jimmy Eat World. The story's weird relationship with boobs Hilarie Burton Morgan's MTV days and several tangents about TRL Naley's growth and maturity Friendship dynamics being complicated Keith's desire to adopt Lucas and whether it's an unnecessary plot point or a grand symbolic gesture Peyton's flirtation with Pete Wentz that you can apparently see from across the room Whitey's ending voiceover and its…connections to Miley Cyrus' The Climb?
