Welcome to this podcast/video episode. Our special guest today is Nika Spaulding. Welcome, Nika. Nika >> Thanks, Kay. I'm excited to be here with you. Kay >> Well, it's always great to have you. We always love it when you are our guest. Nika is the Resident Theologian at St Jude Oak Cliff in the Dallas area. She has a Master of Theology from DTS and our topic today is about the image of God. We're talking about what it means to be God's image. Explain that a little bit for us, because I think we usually we would say what it means to be in the image of God, but what does it mean to be God's image? Nika >> Yeah, that's really good. I like that you clarify that because I think that's an important part of this conversation. We use the phrase image of God, or imago dei if you've heard the Latin one, this idea of humanity at the end of creation, God makes the heavens and the earth. He makes all these days; he fills the days. It's incredible. And then creation crescendos at the top and kind of breaks from the pattern. You sort of have a creation, day and night, creation, day and night, day, night. And then all of a sudden, the camera zooms in and God gets to the top of creation, which is in Genesis 1:26-27. Let's make mankind in our image male and female and you have this image language that gets picked up there. And what's really interesting about that is people forever have been talking about the image of God. It's a big idea in theology, but sometimes people will talk about it as if it's something you can do, or it's something that you receive, or maybe like you can bear it or you cannot bear it. And really I think an important distinction is, no, no, you just are the image of God. You don't do something to become the image of God. We just exist as the image of God because that's what it means to be human. It's all humans are the image of God rather than we can act like the image of God. And one of the distinctions that I like to make is sometimes people think that we are the image of God because we're rational. We were talking about pets before we hit record, and I love my dog more than I probably should. But I have to accept at some point that humans are more important than my dog. I may not emotionally accept that, but I can intellectually accept that on some level. And people will say, well, yeah, because you can reason, you can marry, you can logic, sort of all these things. And it's like, well, that then means people who with intellectual disabilities then don't image...

Unless you teach your moods “where they get off,” you can never be a sound Christian…but just a creature dithering to and fro, with its beliefs really dependent on the weather and the state of its digestion.”“There will come a moment when there is bad news…or he's in trouble…or is living among a lot of other people who don't believe…or when he wants a woman…or wants to tell a lie…some moment, in fact, at which it would be very convenient if Christianity were not true. And…his desires will carry out a blitz on his belief…I know by experience. Now that I'm a Christian I do have moods in which the whole thing looks very improbable…This rebellion of your moods…is going to come.” "I was assuming that if the human mind once accepts a thing as true it will automatically go on regarding it as true…I was assuming that the human mind is completely ruled by reason. But that is not so.”Faith does not rise or fall on the basis of reason alone. People don't come to faith strictly on the basis of logic and people almost never quit the faith strictly because of intellectual doubts. “What if, the true story is that people stop believing and then find they need arguments to justify their unbelief?…The intellectual arguments for atheism are, generally speaking, just rationalizations concocted after the fact. A lot of unbelief is rooted, not in reason, but in the emotions.” (Unbelievers: An Emotional History of Doubt, Alec Ryrie) What circumstances and emotions make us start thinking, “You know…it would be very convenient for me right now if Christianity were not true.” 1. Moral Compromise - Living with the sin and the faith at the same time creates an intolerable dissonance. 2. Suffering - Buried underneath the claim of atheism, there's often a deep emotional wound. 3. “Friendly Fire” - It's easy to blame God for the things that people do in his name. “Consequently one must train the habit of faith…make sure that some of its main doctrines shall be deliberately held before your mind for some time every day. That's why daily prayers and religious reading and church-going are necessary parts of the Christian life. We have to be continually reminded of what we believe.” Faith or spiritual tenacity must be fed by study, meditation, prayer, worship and engaging in the community of other believers. It's not game day, it's training day that's crucial. What we do in training, practice, preparation will determine the outcome. We will go the distance because we trained for it. To develop our faith/spiritual tenacity two things are required. First, become part of a faith community that provides inspiration and practical instruction for Christian living. And, second, slow down. Stop booking yourself with wall-to-wall commitments. Leave space for your pursuit of God. . Jesus didn't come all the way from heaven to earth…Jesus didn't die on the cross…he didn't call us to follow him, so that we could merely start the race. On this episode we continue our apologetics conversation by specifically talking about the problems throughout Christian history with Dr. John Dickson, who is the Distinguished Fellow and Senior Lecturer in Public Christianity at Ridley College, Melbourne, and the author of a number of books, including most recently, Bullies and Saints: An Honest Look at the Good and Evil of Christian History (Zondervan), as well as the host of a podcast called Undeceptions. Apologetics for John is primarily about making Christ known, and thus he prefers to speak of public Christianity rather than “apologetics.” Given John's recent book, and his expertise as a historian, we primarily discuss the horrors associated with the Crusades and how Christians should think about this terrible part of the history of their faith. For John, the greatest apologetic is the local church, both because no individual can really make the full case and also because when the church rightly sings the tune of Christ, unlike what we see with the Crusades, that will be the most compelling presentation of the Gospel as true and beautiful. The Crusaders had recaptured Jerusalem and the Holy Lands. They had regained control and care of The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, probably medieval Christianity’s most sacred site, built over what was believed to be Jesus’ empty tomb. Their job was done and most of the crusaders packed up and went home, bolstered in their belief that God had been with them and seized their victory. I've been reading a book called Bullies and Saints: An Honest Look at the Good and Evil of Christian History. It is an eye-opening look at how Christians have acted through the ages. As the title suggests, it hasn't all been bad. There are saints in our family tree -- people who love deeply and suffer patiently and act selflessly. Our tribe is rife with those folks. But they are not all of us. There are also bullies among us, from crusaders, to slaveholders, to molesters, to hypocrites. We are not perfect people. Not by a long shot. This Sunday, we'll look at a bully and a saint in John's third letter to the Church, and we'll be inspired to consider how our own attitudes and actions help or hurt the cause of Christ in the world. We'll try together to get to the heart of the issue as we let the issues get to the heart of us. I don't know if I'm as  "excited" about this message as I am ready for it.
