Send us Fan MailWhat is the difference between opera and operetta? In this episode of The Classical Music Minute, we explore two closely related forms of musical theatre. Opera is usually larger in scale and often more serious in tone, with music driving the drama from beginning to end. Many operas deal with intense themes such as love, tragedy, power, fate, and betrayal.Operetta, whose name means “little opera,” is generally lighter and more comic. It often includes spoken dialogue, catchy melodies, romantic plots, mistaken identities, and a playful theatrical style.Popularized by composers such as Johann Strauss II and Franz Lehár, operetta became especially fashionable in nineteenth-century Vienna and later influenced the development of musical theatre. In just sixty seconds, discover how opera and operetta are connected, and why one tends to bring the drama while the other brings the sparkle.Fun FactOperetta helped shape the modern musical. Its combination of spoken dialogue, memorable songs, romance, and comedy influenced later stage works on Broadway and in London's West End.About The Classical Music MinuteThe Classical Music Minute is a short podcast exploring fascinating stories, quirky history, and surprising facts from the world of classical music—all in about sixty seconds. Each episode offers a quick and entertaining glimpse into composers, masterpieces, musical traditions, and the curious moments that shaped music history. You can also read the written versions of these episodes on Substack, where they're published as short articles delivered directly to subscribers.About Steven, HostSteven Hobé is a Canadian composer and actor based in Toronto and a member of the Canadian League of Composers.

Author Marcia Menter discusses her new book, That Voice: In Search of Ann Drummond-Grant, the Singer Who Shaped My Life. Part biography and part memoir, the book details the life of Scottish contralto, Ann Drummond-Grant (known as Drummie) who died during the prime of her career in 1959. Drummie sang lead roles for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, a famous Gilbert and Sullivan troupe that toured Great Britain for over a hundred years. Years after Drummie's death, Marcia was a young teen in upstate New York when she discovered Drummie's legendary singing voice. That discovery impacted Marcia so profoundly that she spent years learning (or as she puts it, failing to learn) how to sing.

Welcome everyone to our show! This week we are talking about the history of Mascots! This history is tough to pin down as the definition of 'mascots' has morphed and changed over time. Starting in early Provencal, or Occitan, history it was a term used for a witch. Later changing to a being, or item, that could change your fortune; a good luck charm. It was not until the comic Operetta "La Mascotte" hit the stages of France in 1881 that the word full entered the lexicon of French and English speakers. That Opera also, allowed Macotte's to be humans, and not just tickets or animals. As the word, and idea, made its way to America it began to morph again. Especially superstitious baseball Players took hold of this word and would find other humans, usually children, to be their mascots and bring them luck. Honestly, the history is pretty sad here. If you would like to know more listen in and find out this weird and fascinating history. Thank you Isaac LeSage for the amazing theme music. Find his music wherever you listen. Operetta is light opera...or opera light. Its goal is to amuse: to be witty, charming, funny, not serious either in style or substance.
