I'm taking a detour from my regular rhythm on the podcast this week to share some of my thoughts on the current state of the US and the fascist regime change underway, orchestrated with maximum chaos, brutality, corruption, and incompetency. Here I'm reading from three essays I've previously posted online where I'm applying my background as a professor of Religious Studies. The first, "What is a Cult?" comes from Jan, 2021. The next, "A Brief Guide to the 'Spiritual' Forces at Play in Trumpism," was from Nov, 2024, and the final, "On the Apotheosis of Loyalty as the Ultimate Virtue in the Trump Cult Kakistocracy" is also from Nov, 2024.
In this week's show, we talk to Laci Bean and Sarah Edmundson about what it is like to join a cult, live among cult members, escape a cult, and ultimately heal from the trauma cause by a cult.If you want to call in to the Bonus Show, leave a voicemail at (530) 332-8020. So we're all freaking out in this final stretch before Election Day 2024. Rebecca and Maya revisit our episode on the Trump Cult from four years ago, recorded right before Biden's inauguration, which we then thought—perhaps naively—would be the last one we'd have to do. We listen to it again and ask: why are we … Continue reading "The Trump Cult: Revisited"

SERIES 3 EPISODE 50: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: It is now Day Three of Trump's Fugue State Crisis – from Monday night at Oaks, Pennsylvania when Trump abruptly STOPPED the town hall inexplicably and began to slur and behave bizarrely, through his announcement that Kamala Harris is physically disqualified from being president because she has hay fever through his cancelling of a softball interview on CNBC the same day she was to be interviewed on Fox, to the question from the Economic Club of Chicago about whether or not google should be broken up which he answered by talking about voting in Virginia. A survivor of and expert on cults, Matthew Remski, has a different idea. What happened in Pennsylvania "echoes MANY instances of cultic leaders who, exhausted, ill, and at the end of their cognitive rope, outsource their emotional dominance subroutines to canned music they personally find exquisitely sentimental... The leader of the group I was in for 3 years maintained a Trump-campaign-like schedule of daily 2-hour sermons. Over the years he increasingly relied on his DJ to fill the room with emotional overwhelm whenever he gapped out. He was 78 too. He air-conducted the tunes. He had a shrinking repertoire of melted talking points. But because there was never any substance to his schtick, he didn't struggle to remember details that were slipping away. He just turned to the music." B-Block (21:45) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Though The Washington Post noted this alarming change in Trump with real words and realer headlines, some of the key people along the tattered broken remains of some of the key guard-rails, are still sane-washing it. The New York Times: “Trump Bobs His Head To Music for 30 Minutes in Odd Town Hall Detour. After multiple interruptions, Trump cut off questions and seemed to decide that it would be more enjoyable for all concerned – and it appeared, for himself – if he fired up his campaign playlist.” Joseph Kahn, executive editor of the New York Times, has been interviewed at length by Steve Inskeep of National Public Radio. The result is almost as disturbing as Trump playing the hits from that radio station that broadcasts only in his own mind. I'm going to read a lot of it, verbatim, because Joe Kahn is almost as detached from reality as Donald Trump. C-Block (43:45) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Russell Brand will sell you a $240 amulet to protect you from negative forces. Like Russell Brand? The report of a state poll that's 51-50 Trump ("do the math"). And just when you thought it was quieting down, the Olivia Nuzzi/Ryan Lizza/Robert F. Kennedy Jr scandal roars back to life as Lizza answers my ex's lawsuit against him by claiming she told him RFK wanted to "possess and impregnate her." Via FaceTime? That'd be some accomplishment! I'll have the details, if I can stop laughing long enoughSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week on Ring of Fire! At a time when Donald Trump can't afford any slip ups, his campaign made a massive unforced error this week during a photo op at Arlington National Cemetery. The former president appeared to take some pictures and lay a wreath, but now reports suggest that this whole incident may have been illegal. Making things even worse is the fact that his staff got into a fight at the event, and they then doubled down on the attacks after everything ended. Once again, past comments by Senator J.D. Vance have come back to cause chaos for the Trump campaign. This time, it was comments that he made on a podcast in 2021, where he claimed that people that don't have children are “disturbing” to him. Comments like these are absolutely killing the Trump campaign with voters, and it doesn't look like there is any end in sight to Vance's horrible comments from the past. Conservative radio host Erick Erickson has had enough of the “Trump Cult,” and he blasted them during a recent segment on his program for attacking anyone that doesn't “hump” Trump's leg. At one point, he grew so irate that he exclaimed “screw you people” after he talked about how he had probably given more money to Trump than any of them. This is a crack in the support for Trump, even if Erickson still says he'll vote for him. All that, and much more, on this week's Ring of Fire Podcast!

Cohen responded by admitting it: Yes, he was once a member of the Trump “cult.” Which is apt: Again and again, Trump's own lawyers have seemingly designed their strategy around flattering Trump as much as serving his legal needs. Tonight on The ReidOut, Joy Reid covers the global condemnation that erupted following an Israeli airstrike that tragically claimed the lives of seven humanitarian aid workers associated with Chef Jose Andres' World Central Kitchen, labeling the strike as "unforgivable." Furthermore, we delve into the concerning phenomenon of the Trump cult, where his followers seemingly disregard his alleged crimes and elevate him to a messianic figure at his rallies. Exploring the influence of a renowned minister from the 1950s and '60s on Trump's tactics will shed light on this worrisome trend. Additionally, marking 103 years since the Tulsa Race Massacre, two centenarian survivors persist in their quest for justice, coinciding with a pivotal court hearing today, highlighting the enduring struggle for accountability and reconciliation. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.
Is MAGA a cult? Listening and observing everything for the last few years, it sure does look like a duck and sounds like a duck.
Trump cult says conservatives should lower their standards and support him because conservatism is dead anyway.
In this episode, I talk with author, professor, journalist, and rabbi Jay Michaelson. After publishing nine other books of nonfiction and poetry, and hundreds of stories for publications like Rolling Stone, The Daily Beast, and New York magazine, Michaelson has just come out with his first work of fiction, The Secret That's Not a Secret. We discuss the nearly 20-year journey behind the writing of this book, and how the tensions between sexuality and religious beliefs in the lives of its Orthodox Jewish characters reflect some of Jay's own journey. As an expert on Kabbalah and heretical (historic) figures like Jacob Frank, Michaelson has made a career of carving out a space for mystical imagination beyond patriarchy and heteronormativity. Finally, we also talk about how writers pick between esoteric and more mainstream topics when choosing between book projects, and how current events—including the rise of authoritarianism and the Oct 7th Hamas attacks— reveal and the intersection of religion and politics today. Some of my biggest takeaways* Writing fiction gave Jay Michaelson access to describing experiences and inner states not always accessible through nonfiction.Michaelson began the first versions of some of these stories almost 20 years ago, and he's written 8 books of nonfiction alongside the development of this collection. And though those books deal with many of the same subjects—Jewish mysticism, the interplay between sexuality and religion, and so on—he was able to depict their inner reality in ways that feel deeper or more liberating than he was able to in nonfiction:I now have written [several] non-fiction books and hundreds of articles. And that does come very naturally and easily to me. And yet I really feel like…this really is the book I'm the most proud of. It feels the closest to my way of seeing the world, even though it's fiction…And I think a lot of that is that….there's a lot of imagination in this book and that was so freeing.* The book represents Jay's own journey of self-discovery and the evolution of the stories over two decades.Michaelson talks about the fact that when he started writing these stories, he himself was closeted—not just sexually, but in terms of his ability to be honest with himself about the writing he wanted the freedom to do:“When I was finishing up college, deciding what I wanted to be when I grew up, there were two main choices on the agenda. My experience of the closet for me was, it wasn't just about sexuality. It was like closeted from all kinds of desires. And so for me, it was like being an English lit professor or being a lawyer and trying to save the world. And being a writer….that was like the dream that wasn't mine to reach for.”* The book delves into the tension within Orthodox Jewish communities and their potential for spiritual liberation.Recent American Jewish fiction has featured plenty of Orthodox Jewish characters, but most often these depict people who have left the restrictive confines of their faith.By contrast, the characters in this collection remain in their Orthodox environment, but are seeking spiritual and sexual liberation:"[The stories] deal with gay orthodox men who are wrestling, sometimes quite literally, with the tension between their sexuality and their religious beliefs."By focusing on the sensory details and physical depictions of these struggles, Michaelson transforms abstract spiritual conflicts into immersive experiences.* This book's exploration of Kabbalistic thought is connected to Michaelson's previous scholarship on heretical figures like Sabbatai Zevi (1626-1676) and Jacob Frank (1726-1791).The interview also touches upon Michaelson's broader academic and journalistic work, which considers the significance of Jacob Frank and other heretics who diverged from orthodox religious traditions. It suggests that these historical figures may reflect a desire for a spiritual revolution that could have lasting impacts on contemporary socio-religious dynamics.“One of the things that Jacob Frank also did was preach a kind of a teaching of liberated sexuality and sexuality as spiritual messianic experience…as a kind of, the world to come, the messianic age, through a kind of spiritualized sexual act or ritual. And that's in the book, definitely.”* This was very much a book Michaelson had to write—but it also made him think consciously about choosing smaller and more esoteric projects versus writing bigger, more mainstream books. Some of Michaelson's previous books, such as God vs. Gay, where very much written with a mainstream audience in mind—an attempt to write an activist book that would appeal to as large an audience as possible. By contrast, Michaelson understood his story collection might draw a smaller readership. The calculus of personal passion vs readership is one that many seasoned writers have to make:“There are times where I've chosen consciously, that book God vs. Gay was an example, where I chose to write a more mainstream book and I wanted to do something with it with a larger audience and I was lucky I found a somewhat larger audience…But when it comes time to think about the next book I have to write, which is where I am now…I have one [idea] that I think would [potentially attract] a larger audience, and then there's like the other one that I sort of want to do anyway, even though it wouldn't [attract as large] an audience. And it's such a question of what our creative hopes and ambitions are, I think, as well as financial ones.”Discussed on this episode* Buy The Secret that is not a Secret at Bookshop.org | Amazon.com | Ayin Press* The Heresy of Jacob Frank: From Jewish Messianism to Esoteric Myth, by Jay Michaelson* Jay Michaelson's website* Jaymichaelson.substack.net* ‘Deprogramming" the Trump Cult,' CNN appearance on how people develop conspiratorial and group-think beliefs... and how they can be coaxed out of them, July 6, 2023.Show CreditsThis episode was produced & mixed by Magpie Audio Productions. SEASON 2 EPISODE 68: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) BULLETIN: The District of Columbia Court of Appeals Friday afternoon halted Judge Chutkan's gag order against Trump for at least the next 17 days. Rather than deal with it on an emergency basis, it scheduled the first in-person hearing for NOVEMBER 20. The members of the three-judge panel consisting of two judges appointed by Obama and one appointed by Biden should be impeached and disbarred because they actually fell for not just a pathetically weak 1st Amendment excuse but also for a series of arguments based on the delusions-of-grandeur, megalomaniacal premise that this madman Trump believes a 100,000,000 Americans are somehow being deprived of their right to hear him because a judge had ruled no, Trump was not allowed to threaten the judge and the court officials and the prosecutors and not allowed to try to convince his cultists to try to kill them. He had already been given – BY the Judge who issued the gag order – the right to continue to insanely claim that the prosecution of his attempt to overthrow the government and foment violent revolution in this country and install an authoritarian regime with him as its permanent dictator was actually a political vendetta personally ordered by the President of the United States. All she wanted to stop was the continued attempt by Trump to use the social media site he OWNS and the propaganda video networks that make their only money by platforming him and the fascist rallies he stages to say it in just the right way to get somebody to KILL special counsel Jack Smith and to KILL judge Tanya Chutkan and to call in bomb threats to the court room and to doxx the jurors, the way he got hundreds of his cultists to attack the Capitol on January 6 and the way he doxxed Obama and one of his cultists went to Obama's neighborhood and hunted him, with the ultimate goal being obvious and evil: to institutionalize political violence and turn it into the determinative factor in how this country is not governered but RULED. Donald Trump is a terrorist. A. TERRORIST. And he has been using terrorism by proxy to destroy the laws and rules of this country, without interruption by the law or the courts for fully EIGHT years now. And when the justice system FINALLY stands up on its feet and the courts FINALLY stand up on their feet and recognize that after ALL of our other institutions have utterly failed and ALL of our leaders have failed to protect the nation against domestic terrorism in the form of Trump and his family and his enablers, when SOMEBODY finally BEGINS to do SOMETHING about it, this DC Appeals court say well, no, maybe the legal system of this country has been bending over backwards to protect the rights of this man who would destroy it and KILL anybody in it he doesn't like, but we don't see that in bending over backwards it has yet severed its own SPINE yet, so we're going to grant an “administrative stay” until at least November 20th to prove that we're great legal scholars and we're giving Trump every opportunity to get Jack Smith or Merrick Garland killed and why, yes, if there HAD been some sort of legal case against Osama Bin Laden before us in the summer of 2001 we would have delayed the injunction against him for two weeks because it's FAR more important to give people bent on destroying the United States every last ounce of their rights, than it is to protect the LAWS of this country or the JUDGES of this country or the REPRESENTATIVE FORM OF GOVERNMENT of this country itself. (17:48) The rest of this edition of the podcast is a repeat of Friday's 67th episode and if you've heard it there is no reason to listen again after this point. SPECIAL COMMENT: Dementia J. Trump's lawyers last night filed a 35-page document to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, one or two paragraphs of which asks that court to BAR Judge Tanya Chutkan from reinstating the gag order on him. The rest of it is about how wonderful he is and how much he leads in the primary polls and it sounds like the dialogue they gave Rita Moreno in the last scene of the Jack Nicholson movie “Carnal Knowledge.” From the first (!) page: “President Trump's uniquely powerful voice has been a fixtue of American political discourse for eight years, and central to the American fabric for decades.” Well, true, like car alarms. Or Herpes. From Item 4, on Page 11: "The Gag Order violates the rights of tens of millions of Americans to receive President Trump's speech: A restriction on President Trump's speech inflicts a reciprocal injury on the rights of over 100 million Americans who listen to him…" Listen to him bout how big and strong he is and how he is better, more beautiful, more powerful, more perfect, more strong, more masculine, more extraordinary, more virile, more domineering, more irresistible and more up in the air and I may have added a little something to the text there. More importantly, but less entertainingly, Judge Chutkan hits the gas, Judge Engoron hits the roof, Judge Cannon does NOT hit the pause button. Chutkan sent a not so subtle sign to the Trump Cult that the Subversion trial will start as planned 123 days from now, and Jack Smith let Cannon know that Trump was playing her like a two dollar banjo. Also, here in New York, the FBI searched the home of the Mayor's top campaign fundraiser and all of a sudden there is a money scandal involving her, him, a construction company, the nation of Turkey, donors who didn't donate, and don't blame me, I voted for the Garbage Commissioner Lady. And back in DC, Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene and Chip Roy in a three-way… war of words. It began with a post by Roy, explaining why he moved to stop the vote to censure Representative Tlaib. Then Barney Rubble sub-tweeted him: “You voted to kick me out of the freedom caucus, but keep CNN wannabe Ken Buck and vaping groping Lauren Boebert…” to which Roy replied “Tell her to go-chase so-called Jewish space lasers if she wants to spend time on that sort of thing.” And Greene responded “Oh shut up Colonel Sanders” and predicted that this would all end with him reciting “powdered wig soliloquies as Americans are marched to the firing squads”and no, I don't get the reference either. Curiously silent through all this was Vaping Groping Lauren Boebert. Sources say she's simply sitting there quietly, trying to get a grip on the situation. B-Block (40:19) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD (26:03) Dean Phillips, the Harlan Crow-funded "Democrat" challenging Biden, may have a bigger problem even than Crow. Fox is equally-opportunity hate: Jesse Watters gets suspended for threatening Arab Americans; Mark Levin lies about Wolf Blitzer's grandparents and denies they died in the holocaust. And after an ex-NHL player dies from taking a skate to his neck, how could an NHL team glorify one of their players nearly cutting another player with EACH of his skates? C-Block (49:21) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: There is boredom, there is paranoia, there is fantasy, there is detective fiction, there is self-satirization. In this podcast, we're going to talk about: Matt Walsh is DEFENDING danny masterson and russel brand, despite the copious evidence against them. Why are republicans so predictable when it comes to defending people like this? People at a recent trump rally having absolutely no understanding of how government works. The Trump Indictments and Trump Cult Mentality. Are the indictments against former President Donald Trump "trumped up"? Has Free Speech been indicted? Is this just a ploy to convict Trump of something/anything to keep him from running for President of the United States? Do some Trump supporters act in a cult-like fashion when it comes to their support of him?

It's official, Trump is running for President in 2024. Does anyone really want him to – or is it foolish to underestimate him? Julie Norman, Co-Director of the UCL Centre on US Politics, joins Jacob to tell us why calling Trump the underdog could play straight into his hands. “As much as Trump gets leverage in promoting himself, bashing Biden also plays well with his base.” “I think Trump knows that what is appealing about Trump is himself - and it's why some of the Trump backed candidates didn't do so well. He has a cult of personality around him that is bigger than his children and the people around him.” “Whether one loves or hates Trump it's important not to discount him.” Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/bunkercast Written and presented by Jacob Jarvis. PDA / GREEP TOWN HALL TO SAVE AMERICAN DEMOCRACY In the face of the Trump Cult's fascist assault on American democracy, the Grassroots Emergency Election Protection Coalition has joined with the Progressive Democrats of America to present a uniquely powerful and comprehensive town hall. The meeting—which drew more than 300 citizen participants—featured more than two dozen top-of-the-line intellectuals, organizers and activists offering their brilliance and their guidance on election protection. We open with actress/activist MIMI KENNEDY and PDA Executive Director ALAN MINSKY with their deep insights into the forces attacking the remnants of our republic. We're then joined by ANDREA MILLER and RAY MCCLENDON, creators of the crucial “Georgia Way,” which against all conceivable odds turned two US Senate seats in Georgia to progressive campaigners who unseated Mitch McConnell. They are followed by an astounding line-up of key players in saving American democracy, including: REV. RODNEY SADLER, CHRISTIAN NUNES, MIKE FOX, TATONKA BRICCA, SARA NELSON, DANNY SHEEHAN, LORI PESANTE, ROBERT WILSON, JAMES FUKUDA, DANNY GOLDBERG, KENNY BRUNO, JOHN BRAKEY and JAN GOODMAN. Nowhere in recent US history has there been such a powerful confluence of key grassroots pro-democracy organizers and thinkers. If you care about protecting our nation from a Trump Cult fascist take-over, do not miss this broadcast!!!
It's been nine months since the Capitol attack, and we still don't have true accountability. Representative Adam Schiff and the rest of the Jan. 6 House select committee are issuing subpoenas to key witnesses, including Steve Bannon, Dan Scavino and two “Stop the Steal” rally organizers. “No one is off the table,” Schiff says. But in a political ecosystem that is defined in part by the spread of misinformation and polarization on platforms like Facebook and the power of right-wing media outlets like Fox News and One America News Network, how much will a congressional investigation actually move the needle on a democracy at risk? Especially when the effort — billed as bipartisan — has only two Republican members? In this conversation, Kara presses Schiff on the Jan. 6 committee's ability to bring about change and its efforts to subpoena key witnesses. As Kara points out, “Issuing subpoenas is one thing, but getting people to comply is another” — and that is proving more difficult as Donald Trump advises allies to defy the committee. They also discuss the Facebook whistle-blower Frances Haugen, how Schiff wishes Mark Zuckerberg would have replied to questions about the platform's role in amplifying polarization and whether Trump will run in 2024. And Schiff reflects on the former president's nicknames for him.You can find transcripts (posted midday) and more information for all episodes at nytimes.com/sway, and you can find Kara on Twitter @karaswisher.
