HERE ARE 10 REASONS WHY CHRISTIANS SHOULD VOTE:Voting publicly recognises that we submit to the authority of the political system in our nation as established by God. (Romans 13:1-7)Voting recognises the equality of all people and their right to speak and be heard. (Deuteronomy 10:17-19)It is one way that we can obey God's command to seek the good of those around us and our nation as a whole. (Jeremiah 29:5-6) It shows that we care deeply about who our leaders are as we are urged to offer prayer and intercession on their behalf. (1 Timothy 2:1,2) It is a simple yet significant way we can do something about politics in our nation. 'All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing', Edmund Burke. (Psalms 34:14)It makes a difference the way a grain of salt makes a difference, and that is how we are to influence our society for good. (Matthew 5:13)It is a privilege not to be taken for granted. Those of us who reap the benefits of living in a democracy should play a part in upholding democracyNot voting is a form of voting, as it will influence the outcome. We need to take responsibility for our actions, as well as our lack of actions. (Luke 10:25-37)Voting has biblical precedence for example Acts 14:23 describes that the early Christians elected elders by voting.Voting is part of our stewardship to use all the resources we have been given in ways that honor God; to waste a vote is to squander a gift.THE HISTORICAL ADAM Adam and Eve,In Genesis two and three. Are they just symbolic?Defending the existence of a founding human pair that lived only a few thousand years ago. population genetics.Theological anthropology Both modern theologians and modern scientists are arguing that a historical Adam and Eve might have been real, not merely figurative, or metaphorical ancestors of the human race.  Modern science in the area of genomics and paleo archeology are fueling debates on the “historical” Adam and Eve and whether such an original human couple truly existed or whether the Adam and Eve we read of in Genesis are only figurative representations of how the human race originated.  modern genetics paleo archeology  are now coming to bear on the biblical narrative of Genesis.  Was there a single, founding couple, or is the human race the result of evolutionary processes where humans evolved from prior hominid lifeforms? Did humanity originate with an original human pair, Adam and Eve, or did humans evolve from a progression of early hominins?  Surprisingly, a vast majority of people of faith do not give much thought or concern into the inquiry of whether the human race began with a literal Adam and Eve. This is changing, however, as the issue has garnered increased attention from scientists and theologians alike as modern science is probing further and deeper to provide greater understanding of human population genetics from clues found in the modern human gene pool. Employing a sort of reverse engineering, paleo archeologists are studying the modern human gene pool to trace back to the origins of the human bloodline, even to an original human pair. For Christians today the issue may be as important as the debate regarding the theory of evolution was in the early twentieth century as several fundamental Christian doctrines are brought to bear from the doctrine of the mankind's fall from grace in Eden to the doctrine of original sin where sin passed down to all men and women on account of Adam and Eve eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Modern evolutionary theory has long been a constant point of tension with biblical creationism and the question of whether there existed a literal original human pair is a natural extension of the creation-evolution debate.

Send us a textExperience an enriching journey through faith, marriage, and the notion of authority as we weave together meaningful insights and historical reflections. We begin with a heartfelt prayer, setting the stage for a discussion on the essential role of daily prayer and nurturing a relationship with God. By drawing parallels between spiritual life and marital responsibilities, we underline the critical importance of personal accountability in marriage. Each partner's duty to nurture and cherish their spouse comes into sharp focus as we highlight the delicate balance of responsibility and love. Our conversation then takes a historical turn, spotlighting Jonathan Mayhew's 1750 sermon that challenges the concept of absolute submission to governmental authority, affirming the need for just and God-fearing rulers. In our next segment, we explore the Christian duty to resist tyranny and evil, focusing on protecting society's most vulnerable, including widows, orphans, the poor, and the needy. Inspired by Jefferson's stirring words, "Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God," we discuss the various forms of resisting oppression, from martial means to other methods, emphasizing the necessity to address tyranny both in state governance and within the church. We also preview an upcoming discussion on another impactful sermon by Jonathan Mayhew, contemplating its timeless relevance to today's challenges. Embark on a thought-provoking exploration of the intersection between Christian duty and civil obedience with me as we delve into Jonathan Mayhew's historic sermon, a catalyst for the American Revolution. We'll traverse through the sermon's poignant interpretation of Romans 13:1-7 and its impact on our understanding of compliance with authority that encompasses family, servitude, and government. As we weave through the narrative, I'll also share heartfelt moments from my homestead, aiming to offer you a comforting backdrop to our profound discussion. In this episode, we navigate the intricate historical relationships among early Christians, especially Jewish converts, and their views on obedience to non-Christian rulers. The Apostle Paul's message of unity and the Christian call to universal obedience, irrespective of heritage, is brought to the fore, echoing into the fabric of our modern society. Closing off with a blessing for all our listeners, their families, and our nation, we lay the groundwork for the enlightening conversations that await us in future episodes. Daring to challenge civil obedience for the sake of following God - are you ready to grapple with this conundrum? In this animated discussion, we dive into the riveting story where Mordecai refuses to bow down to Haman, sparking off a litany of events that resonate with today's conflicts between civil obedience and Godly principles. As we navigate this intriguing narrative, we touch on the escalating darkness in the world around us, and the increasingly difficult decisions that Christians face when the lines between the law of the land and the law of God come into conflict. From the pride and hatred that fuels Haman's intentions, to Mordecai's steadfast principles that remain unshaken in the face of adversity, we dissect the characters and the tensions that color this fascinating story. We consider the long history of anti-Semitism, the unfairness of Haman's plan to annihilate an entire race because of one man's refusal to bow, and marvel at the way God uses unfair circumstances for His purposes. As we uncover this compelling narrative, we invite you to reflect on the challenges and decisions that Christians may face in a turbulent world, urging you to remain resolute in faith, even in the face of adversity.Support the show

Christian duty and panhandlers. What's the right thing to do? For a long time I've struggled when approached by panhandlers, people on the street asking for money. I want to help, but I don't want to be taken advantage of, or feed an addiction, or endanger myself. As a Catholic, as a Christian, I know helping the less fortunate is central to my faith. In one of the most famous passages from Scripture, in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says in a parable ‘whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.' ‘For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.' These are what are called the Corporal Works of Mercy, which the US Conference of Catholic Bishops says are “found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise.” But does this mean if someone walks up to me I need to give money every time? When working in European city centers, or downtown Phoenix or Cleveland, I would try to have some food to offer instead of money, but is that enough? The US Catholic Bishops say giving alms to the poor is best done this way: “Donate money to organizations that have the ability to provide support and services for those in need. Do research and find organizations that put people in need first, rather than profit.” That seems sensible…and yet when I'm approached on the street I feel faced with a flesh and blood person asking me for help. But do they really need help? One reason I'm so torn on this is probably the effect of local TV news...

All Christians and sinners should understand that the whole plan is complete. They should understand that the whole of Christ – His character, His work, His atoning death, and His ever-living intercession – belongs to each and every person and simply needs to be accepted. There is a full ocean of it. There it is. You can just as well take it as not. You are invited and urged to drink, and to drink abundantly! This ocean supplies all your need. As the Scriptures say, He is of God made unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption (1 Corinthians 1:30). What do you need? Wisdom? Here it is. Righteousness? Here it is. Sanctification? Here you have it. It is all in Christ. Can you possibly think of anything needful for your salvation, moral purity, or your usefulness that is not here in Christ? Nothing. All is provided here. But salvation, to be real and available, must be salvation from sin. A religion that does not break the power of sin is a lie. If it does not drive out selfishness and lust, and if it does not bring about love to God and man, joy, peace, and the fruit of the Spirit, it is false and worthless. It can be of no use. That which does not bring about in us the spirit of heaven and make us godly, no matter where it comes from, or by what deception it is defended, is a lie, and if it is fled to as a refuge, it is a refuge of lies. If it does not produce a heavenly mind, expel a worldly mind, and detach us from the love of the world, it is a lie. If it does not produce in us the love required in the Scriptures, genuine love and worship of God and also love for His people – if it does not produce all those states of mind that fit the soul for heaven, then it completely fails of its purpose. * * * * Few preachers in any age have surpassed Charles Finney in clear and well-defined views of conscience and of man's moral convictions. Not many have distinguished the true from the false more closely or have been more skillful in putting their points clearly and prudently. Therefore, these sermons under God were full of spiritual power.

Hey everyone and welcome back to Deeper Roots. We have talk on this podcast before that as Christians, we are to be aligned with Christ, not to this world. That means we are to think differently from the rest of the world, and we need to keep Christ as the priority in our decision making. So, does that mean we have a duty to serve as Christians, inherent from our salvation? Do we have to serve and perform these duties just on the basis that we are saved? We had the wonderful opportunity to talk about this topic, so if you want to follow up on this, or you have a new question altogether, we would love to talk about it. You can submit your questions at www.ibbvn.org/deeperroots. While you're there, you can also see the rest of our episodes and see where else we are streaming. We look forward to hearing from you! Thank you for joining us here on Deeper Roots. Let's get to the conversation!

Look up “duty” in the dictionary. It's defined as “something that one is expected or required to do.” Look up “duty” in a thesaurus. Some of its synonyms: chore, burden, obligation, work. “Duty” can carry some strong negative connotations. Now, consider this. In the world, as you rise through the ranks, you are able to leave many duties behind. For example, if you are high-up on the corporate ladder, you can delegate things you don't want to do to someone else. In Christ's kingdom it works just the opposite. An increase in faith does not lessen duties at all. It increases opportunities to serve God and others. Increased faith means increased obligations and work. But here's the good news. The same faith that increases our duties leads us to delight in them. For through faith we know that we serve the one who first came to serve us. We consider it a privilege to imitate Christ in our service to others. Just as his service to us brought him great joy, so does our service to others.

Sinners want us to rush along in their conspiracy to shed-blood. This is one of the tell-tale signs Solomon gives us of foolish men (Pro. 1:10-12). Sinners are also selfish cowards, who want to save their own skin (Pro. 22:13, Num. 13:32-33). Christians, regardless of the season, regardless of the news, worship the Risen Christ. This makes us bold in battle, stubborn in our determination to fight only for righteous causes, and fervent in prayer that the swords might be bent into plows.
