With his expertise and practical advice, Duvall offers valuable insights for educators and parents alike, making this episode a must-listen for anyone interested in fostering media literacy skills and empowering students in the age of screens.  Learn more about our amazing guest: Born Sherard Duvall in the Ridgewood neighborhood of Columbia, S.C., at 8 years old, “Shekeese” discovered his love for filmmaking, turning a personification tale about a day's journey of a stamp into his first script. But it was Hip-Hop that first captured his heart after his mom gave him a hand-me-down fisher price record player and a 45” of LL Cool J's Go Cut Creator Go - lying down in the bathroom near the space heater with headphones on, he became a child of hip-hop culture. At 15, he began his hip-hop career, first djing basement and backyard parties for high school friends and sometimes during lunch, then after purchasing his first pair of Technics 1200s at 16, Shekeese Tha Beast was born. Exploding on the scene in 1996, his senior year of high school, at 17 he began djing first on Columbia's WWDM then Hot 103.9FM, going on to DJ on several radio stations along the east coast from New York to Florida. He released several mixtapes and made his first appearance on BET with Dj Shakim at SC State's Homecoming and MTV the same year on the infamous “Spring Break” filmed in Myrtle Beach. In 1998, in his freshman year at the University of South Carolina he met Dj Kingpin and the two started the NonStop Hip-Hop 2-hour radio show on WUSC 90.5FM. The radio show evolved into “NonStop HipHop Live!” where Shekeese and Kingpin would hold weekly events showcasing hip-hop culture. It was during this time that Shekeese hooked up with SC Hip-Hop juggernaut Fat Rat Da Czar, becoming his manager and DJ. Eventually Czar, along with his longtime business partner LJ Chisholm, became part of NonStop Hip-Hop Live, the crew that established the nonprofit Love Peace and Hip-Hop in 2013. Love Peace and Hip-Hop's World Famous Hip-Hop Family Day became one of the largest festivals in South Carolina music history, bringing over 20,000 attendees annually to Columbia's Main Street. It was in 1998 as a African-American History minor and Media Arts Film major that Shekeese first started exploring film as a creative expression. After graduation in 2001, he took a job first as Production Assistant at Columbia's Mad Monkey, then in 2004 as an editor at Genesis Studios in Cayce, South Carolina. At Genesis he began to grow his filmmaking career; becoming an accomplished editor, director, and producer for commercial and documentary projects for VH1, Discovery Channel, ESPN,the American Cancer Society and many more. In 2009, Shekeese transitioned to filmmaking full time, adding Media Literacy and Film Education to his skillset. In 2013, he became the Director of Media Education at the Nickelodeon Theatre in Columbia, SC.  During this time Shekeese began to become more involved with community work, serving on boards for the Columbia Economic Development Corporation, The RAM Education Foundation and The City of Columbia Board of Zoning Appeals. He has served on advisory committees for SCETV, Historic Columbia, The North Columbia Business Association, and the Justice 360 Death Penalty Resource. Shekeese is also a 2022 SC Arts Commission Fellow, a 2023 Aspen Global Leadership Fellow, a 2021 Liberty Fellow, a 2016 Riley Fellow, a 2016 Leo Twiggs Arts Leadership Scholar, 2015 South Carolina 40 Under 40 and a 2014-2015 American Graduate Champion. While continuing to satisfy his creative passion with art, music, film, and education projects, in 2012 he established OTR Films with guidance from his longtime partner turned entrepreneur FatRat Da Czar. In 2017, he launched OTR Media Group, a nonfiction entertainment, media literacy, and media strategy house that works with businesses and organizations that want to experiment with new ways of seeing and sharing the human experience through the moving image.  Today, Sherard “Shekeese'' Duvall is a film and messaging professional who resides in Columbia, S.C. He's focused on nonfiction storytelling, media literacy education, media strategy, and is an ambassador of South Carolina Hip-Hop culture. On April, 14, 2023 , I was asked to speak , briefly, to the Confederation of Local Historical Societies in my new role as Chairman of the South Carolina Hall of Fame. I only spoke for a few minutes just to introduce myself and inform them of our three inductees this year in 2023. They are Francis Salvador, the first Jewish American casualty in the fight for American Independence, Rudy Mancke the contemporary inductee and the Naturalist for SCETV, and "Smoking" Joe Frazier , the former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. I thought it might be fun to tell our audience here about the Hall of Fame, let them listen in on my brief address and introduce the audience to just a few of the currently 99 inductees in the South Carolina Hall of Fame. I cannot remember anything I was as excited about as being selected to serve in this role, as the Chairman of this organization, that has happened to me in a long time. So I wanted to share it with you , our audience, here on the podcast. So I hope you will enjoy this introduction to the South Carolina Hall of Fame, and enjoy the videos put together by SCETV. They have done a splendid job and I invite you to come over to look at their website Knowitall.org and check out all 99 inductees to the South Carolina Hall of Fame. In this episode we chose just a handful, from one signer of the Declaration of Independence, to three South Carolina astronauts, to a rock star, and a race car driver. Just a small look at the many faces that have helped make South Carolina such a wonderful and inspiring place to live.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

One of the prevalent problems in the COVID-19 era is the lack of digital access for students. Parents, students, and teachers know this problem all too well and it has led to disparities in education that manifest in multiple ways. The most significant of these is that teachers and schools have struggled to get students to show up for online classes and interact with them using technology at the same rate as face-to-face instruction.Cari Kozicki Dr. Stephanie Frazier, Salandra Bowman, and Stacy Fitzsimmons addressed this problem recently at SXSW EDU. In the session “EduCast: Legacy Tech Is a Bridge to Broadband,” they shared how they are serving multiple communities without access to the internet using legacy technology. It simply blew me away.In this episode, Dr. Stephanie Frazier of SCETV in South Carolina and Stacy Fitzsimmons of SNF Writing Solutions in Indiana are our guests. We speak about the way states like South Carolina, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Kentucky, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Virginia, Michigan, and Idaho are collaborating on bringing digital access to students without an internet connection. "T" is for Television. The first snowy black and white images on South Carolina television screens were broadcast by a Charlotte, North Carolina station. It was not until 1952 that six South Carolina stations received their FCC television broadcast licenses. WIS, Columbia went on the air in April 1953 and WCSC, Charleston, followed a month later. WNOK-TRV, one of the oldest UHF channels in the country, is now WLTX, Columbia. Many early stations bought their television cameras developed by Columbia native Thomas T. Goldsmith. WSPA, Spartanburg began broadcasting in 1956 and, became the first station in the state to broadcast live programs in color from its studios. SCETV began broadcasting in 1958 from studios in Columbia. Today there are eleven non-commercial and more than twenty commercial television stations licensed to broadcast in South Carolina.

The Barbados and Carolinas Connection with Rhoda Green Most Barbadians today are unaware or disinterested about their linkages to the Carolinas. However, Rhoda Green recognizes that the past impacts the present each day.  The present, however, can promote forgetfulness, ignorance and sometimes denial.  This reality motivates her to provide a vehicle for sharing, collaboration and an opportunity to better understand this shared history and the lessons learned from it.  This inspiration and passion influenced her decision to become the Founder and Chair of Development for The Barbados and Carolina Legacy Foundation. http://www.barbadoscarolinas.org Mrs. Green was born in Bardados, West Indies and resides in Charleston, SC with her husband and children. She currently serves as the honorary Consul for Barbados in South Carolina. Her work with the Barbados Carolina Connection led to the Twinning of Speightostown, Barbados and Charleston, South Carolina in 1998.  That was followed with bringing the Barbados Tourism Authority and SCETV together to produce a documentary that is shown on ETV and is entitled, ”From Barbados to Carolina”.
