Instead of the usual "each week we choose a theme, and bring you 3 or 4 stories on that theme" business, we throw all that away and bring you 20 stories—yes, 20—in 60 minutes. Ira Glass introduces the idea of doing 20 stories in one hour.Act One: Contributor Starlee Kine talks to actor Tate Donovan about the day he felt he was being exactly the kind of celebrity he'd wanted to be: when suddenly, he was approached by a kid with a camera.Act Two: Writer and producer Scott Carrier recognizes a woman he sees in a restaurant.Act Three: Susan Drury talks about "Swap and Shop," a local radio classifieds show that has become a low-tech, personable sort of Ebay.Act Four: From Patty Martin: a one minute, four second vacation on Nantucket Island, involving a lot of waving.Act Five: From Vicki Merrick, Eric Kipp, and Jay Allison at Transom: scallops on Martha's Vineyard.Act Six: From Blunt Youth Radio: a story of a possibly bad "food situation" at the cafeteria in juvenile detention.Act Seven: Jonathan Goldstein, host of Wiretap, brings us this story about The Penguin as a young man.Act Eight: Two brothers, ages 12 and 13, have very different ideas for their dog's name.Act Nine: Elaine Boehm overhears a couple in her pet shop, trying to choose a dog collar.Act Ten: A two minute play called “Title,” written and performed by Greg Allen and Heather Riordan of the Chicago group, The Neo-Futurists. It's part of their long-running show "Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind: 30 Plays in 60 Minutes."Act Eleven: Author David Sedaris on cell phone usage in restrooms.Act Twelve: Brent Runyon reports from the kids' section at the public library.Act Thirteen: Catherine and John, two college undergrads, do a babysitting gig together. After the kids are asleep and the two of them get hungry, John doesn't think they should eat any of the food in the house; they settle on a compromise.Act Fourteen: Mystery and missing flavor at the hot dog plant.Act Fifteen: Author David Rakoff worked at an advertising agency, and could see exactly where its technology was going.Act Sixteen: Someone sits next to the printer. You see him forty times a day. What's his name? What does he do?Act Seventeen: Richard Kerry has an impressive ability: he can recreate the sound of a whole swamp.Act Eighteen: Author Chuck Klosterman and his friends make a party game out of comparing television shows to rock bands. They call it "Monkees Equals Monkees."Act Nineteen: Every year 1,200 new army cadets arrive at West Point. Once they say a single sentence correctly, they can go to their barracks. But not until then. David Lipsky reports. He's the author of Absolutely American.Act Twenty: Teenage girls from a detention center perform a song for their parents.Transcripts are available at thisamericanlife.org

Rickie Lee Jones emerged into the pop world fully formed; her début album was nominated for five Grammys, in 1980, and she won for Best New Artist. One of the songs on that record was “The Last Chance Texaco,” and Jones has made that the title of her recent memoir. The song evokes a service station on a long stretch of highway, and Jones's book reflects on her almost obsessive need to travel and uproot herself at almost any cost. “All I wanted to do was leave” from a very young age, she says. “When I talk about it from here, it seems like it was so horribly dangerous.” She adds, “Suddenly I'll [say], ‘I think I'll go to Big Sur,' and I'm in a car, going. My guest in this episode is Ashley Ahearn. Ashley is an award winning public radio and podcast journalist. She recently created and published the critically acclaimed podcast series called “Grouse”. Grouse explores life in rural America through the lens of the controversial Greater Sage-Grouse. The series also delves into Ashley's own unique journey to sagebrush country, and tackles many of the competing interests that threaten the grouse. You may also know Ashley from her work on the podcast “Terrestrial” - a show that explored personal choices in the face of climate change, and her many varied works for PRI and NPR. She currently runs Ahearn Productions, where she freelances for NPR and other clients, creates original shows such as Grouse, and helps others create quality podcasts. In this episode we speak extensively about Grouse and the art of developing and telling nuanced stories. We get into the weeds of the production process, including how to gain the trust of people who may be skeptical and initially unwilling to share their stories. We also discuss how to tell a story that stays true to multiple perspectives, and how to engage and connect people using audio as a format. We also talk about Ashley's journey from NPR to freelance productions and consultations. We have a great discussion about loaded terms such as "environmentalist", and what fairness and bias means in the world of journalism.Ashley also gives a sneak peek into her next podcast series.I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion and learned a lot of useful nuggets to improve my ability to engage and communicate environmental stories, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.Find Ashley @ashleyreports on Instagram and @aahearn on Twitter, or on her website at https://www.ahearnproductions.com.FULL SHOW NOTES at http://podcast.naturesarchive.comReferences from the show:People and OrganizationsAshley Ahearn - creator of the Grouse series.Liza Yeager - audio producer and sound designer for GrouseMichael Schroeder - Greater Sage-Grouse expert featured extensively in the Grouse seriesWhitney Henry-Lester - Ashley's editor for GrouseBooks and Other ThingsBundyville - podcast series from OPB that Ashley enjoyedDeath, Sex, and Money - Anna Sale's podcast that Ashley enjoysGrouse - The podcast series Ashley created, which led me to reach out to her for this interviewHome of the Brave - another podcast Ashley likes, by Scott Carrier

Doug Peacock took an unlikely path to becoming an icon of conservation. Following two tours in the Vietnam War as a Green Beret medic, he sought solace and comfort in the American Wilderness, where he began observing and then filming grizzly bears. He believed the bears saved his life, and he felt compelled to return the favor. Many people know Peacock as the inspiration for George Hayduke, the infamous character inThe Monkey Wrench Gang, the 1975 novel by Ed Abbey. Over the years, Peacock authored a number of books about his journey. At the 2019 Mountainfilm festival, in Telluride, Colorado, he sat down with veteran radio producer Scott Carrier to offer an enlightened perspective on the history of bears in this country, share some hysterical stories about his own encounters with the animals, and give his take on the big challenges that grizzlies face today.

Several decades ago, radio producer Scott Carrier and his brother Dave tried to chase down an antelope on foot. That might sound crazy, but Dave was an evolutionary biologist and had just come up with a radical idea: during the heat of the day, humans can outrun most any creature, even one of the world’s fastest animals. His theory was that humans had evolved as endurance predators, able to hunt without weapons. So the brothers gave it a shot, and Scott produced a story about the efforts that absolutely captivated people, especially young men. We talk with Scott about this and replay his amazing piece, which still feels fresh and relevant today.

The fundamental flaw in our civilization is that it’s convinced itself that it’s the best way to live. But there are cracks in the drywall. In a conversation that starts off about running, veers into politics and concludes with donkeys, Christopher McDougall and I examine the damage. Then, a visit with Paul Sherban, a recent college graduate who rode 4,500 miles on his bicycle in search of slowness, not speed. He rode in effort to forget himself and found that the real lesson he learned was that he couldn’t have done it without the help of the many strangers he met along the way. This episode first aired on WLRI 93 FM on Saturday 3/25/17.From Dec 27, 2016:Christopher McDougall is well known for his 2009 book Born to Run, which, among many other things, tells the story of the Tarahumara (Rarámuri), the tribe who (literally) ran away from the Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th century – and never came back. The book features the stories of several colorful characters including the peripatetic runner known as Caballo Blanco, who died in 2012, the podcaster/antelope-chaser Scott Carrier and the effervescent ultra-runner Scott Jurek. For me, it was singularly important because it convinced me to take off my shoes and run barefoot.Ever since seeing him on The Daily Show and then reading the book, I’ve wanted to ask Chris about the irony of embracing barefoot running in the 21st century, when every single technological advancement (and accompanying advertising) seems to implore us to do otherwise. This notion goes beyond athletics; our culture has deliberately forgotten myriad practices that our ancestors employed tens of thousands of years ago. Are we better off as a result? Chris and I seem to agree that we’re not.Chris has recently taken up another ancestral activity: animal partnerships. As he details in his New York Times series “Running With Sherman,” Chris’s latest endeavor is burro-running, which more than anything else requires a quality our culture seems to devalue: patience.  He’s currently working on a book about this venture, to accompany Born to Run and Natural Born Heroes (2015).http://samschindler.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/WWWA_035_Running_Riding_032517.mp3DOWNLOAD this episodeSUBSCRIBE to this podcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Martijn Brugman is schrijver. Obe Alkema is dichter. Hij noemde deze reportage als eerste een 'mixtape'. Nu is hij podcast-famou$$$. De muziek is van dronebaas Scheerling. Een van mijn favoriete radiodocumentaires over nep en echt is er een van René van Es.

David Weinberg was stuck. He had been kicked out of college, was cleaning toilets by day, delivering pizzas by night and spending his weekends in jail. Then one night he heard a story on the radio and got it in his head that maybe he too could make a great radio story. He’d cast himself as the main character in a great documentary and he’d travel and live and steer his way out of his rut. So he bought a recorder and began to secretly record every last meaningful and mundane minute of his life and he found his great idea transformed into a troubling obsession. The very thing that gave him hope and purpose was also distancing him from those he loved the most. What if he’d created an archive of his life that had become his life? Produced by Andy Mills. David Weinberg is an award winning reporter and producer for KCRW. His most recent project is Below The Ten (www.belowtheten.com) The iTunes page for the series: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/kcrws-below-ten-life-in-south/id1030625802 He has taken lots of those old recordings (and lots of new ones too) and put them together in a collection called Random Tape http://randomtape.com/ David explored some of this story on the late, great CBC show Wiretap: https://beta.prx.org/stories/82541 David isn't alone in being inspired by Scott Carrier.

Scott Carrier is an independent producer and the host of Home of the Brave. "It's what makes us human, is our storytelling ability. Animals can't do that. They can communicate. They can talk to each other. They understand, they know what's going on, and they can play. They have rules. They can make the rules, and change the rules, and break the rules, but it's always present tense for animals. But we can talk about the past, we can talk about the future, and that's what makes us so different, besides just our shape."
