Breast cancer risk looks different for everyone. Our guests today have an inherited genetic mutation that increased their risk of breast cancer. Without knowing it, they may have passed this gene onto their children. Genetic mutations can increase risk of breast and ovarian cancers in women, and prostate cancer in men. About 10% of breast cancers are genetic – knowing if you have a gene mutation can help you take steps to lower your risk. It can also cause fear and anxieties and force tough conversations with family members about their genes and cancer risk. Shanise Pearce learned in 2020 that she has two inherited gene mutations and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023. She also has two daughters. Natalie Gutierrez was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and learned afterward that she carries an inherited gene mutation. She has twin sons. Shanise and Natalie are both living with no evidence of breast cancer and have turned their attention to supporting their children and helping them navigate their cancer risk.

Let's get in to it! Ya'll help me welcome Shanise Goodwin to the show, as you can see she is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and she gave me my own diagnosis on why I need therapy. She also gave perspective on why most people can benefit from therapy but there is a negative stigma on therapy. I believe this episode will just help people see that there is a career in therapy and also can be beneficial.
When you're unable to have a homebirth in your area, what happens? Are you totally out of luck…. Or are there other ways to get creative? This week we're speaking with my friend Shanies Pearcey- a stay at home mother to 8 children and minister's wife in Northwest NJ. Shanise enjoys cooking, sewing, and spending time with her precious kids, and I can tell you right now you are going to gain SO MUCH from this interview, as we unpack her journey to a homebirth… across the country from her own home. Get ready for a beautiful, uplifting story. Episode Roundup Question everything, unfortunately. Shanise was told with her twins that her hips were “too small” for a 5 pound baby– and yet, she was able to give birth to an 8 pound baby just fine later on. Another example of this could be seen when her OB told her that if she wanted to give birth without an epidural, they should totally break her water. It's so unfortunate when we hear these examples of care providers looking out for themselves and not for their patients. If you find yourself in a situation that seems unfavorable, like Shanise did with her 8th pregnancy and upcoming labor, keep your mind open to other ideas. It could have been so easy for Shanise and her husband to dismiss the idea of traveling to Texas for a homebirth, but look at what they would have missed if they'd ignored the idea– and consider the hostility that so many women were facing in hospitals in that area at the time. What a beautiful experience Shanise's family had– all because they were open to ideas outside of the norm. And finally, how incredible are our bodies. The way that Shanise's body gave her an opportunity to process her fears and anxieties by stopping labor– that was so beautiful to me. She was able to reach out to a friend, who, by the way owns a beautiful merino wool shop called Truly Charis, for all of the cloth diapering mamas out there, be sure to look her up– and process the feelings and emotions that were welling up inside of her. And once she did that– her body knew that it was now safe to give birth. What a blessing that entire experience was. As we wrap up this amazing episode, I can't help but share Philippians 4: 4-9 Resources: Happy Homebirth Academy FREE Homebirth Essentials Guide

Online learning has given rise to a spectrum of instructional models that redefine teaching and learning in the classroom. At one end, teachers use digital content to enhance teacher-led instruction and provide remediation. At the other, the digital curriculum is leveraged to transform primary instruction and support initial credit and credit recovery programs. However, for teachers who are adding one more thing to their day job, new technology can feel overwhelming. In this episode of Opportunity Thrives, we discuss what educators need most when it comes to adopting new digital curriculum programs and some of the strategies administrators can implement to make adopting the new technology a more seamless process for teachers. Our first guest, Laura Lee, is an editor and writer for Edutopia. Prior to her role at Edutopia, she worked as an educator with a civic education organization and then as a program administrator for two Fulbright grant programs. She has a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Maryland where she was an Eleanor Merrill Fellow. She has also worked at NPR producing content for the Washington desk, All Things Considered and Talk of the Nation. Shanise Goldsby, an assistant principal at Broadview Middle School in Burlington, North Carolina also joined us for the conversation. Shanise has been an educator for 17 years; 14 years as a seventh grade ELA and reading teacher and she is going on three years as an administrator. She is passionate about empowering her teachers to excel with digital curriculum and she shares specific strategies to help teachers get the resources they need to be successful.

I have someone who I met a year ago and we’ve spent some time together so I’ve been able to get to know her better. I’m very happy to have Shanise on. Shanise, please introduce yourself to the audience.Shanise Barona: Hi everyone, my name is Shanise Barona. Happy to be on your podcast!0:55Kim Crayton: Shanise, tell me why is it important to cause a scene and how are you causing a scene?Shanise Barona: I think of the quote by Zora Neale Hurston that says, “If you're silent [about your pain], they'll kill you and say you enjoyed it.” Kim Crayton: Okay, that’s fucking deep. Okay. Go ahead.Shanise Barona: That’s why it’s important to cause a scene. And how am I causing a scene? Many ways… Primarily, just existing. 1:31Kim Crayton: There’s a specific reason that you’re here, but we’ll get to that. Tell me why — fuck it, we’re just gonna get into it. I’m just not even gonna beat around the bush. Many of you know that I’ve had some issues with some of the “women’s groups” in tech, particularly the groups that are run by white women. Because, like many “feminist”/”feminism” organizations, it’s about white feminism. And these organizations are focusing on white women’s issues in tech. As many of you know (and if you don’t know, I’m gonna say it again), white women are NOT “diversity.” Although they are underrepresented in tech, no, WOMEN are underrepresented in tech… White women — very few, if they don’t come from other marginalized groups, as in, having a disability, LGBTQ, all these other things that makes a group of people marginalized, particularly in tech — don’t belong to that group. White women, they are underrepresented, but most are not marginalized. And so, they cause harm to most marginalized individuals who they recruit. They have this “we’re open to everyone” “we’re safe spaces for all” when in actuality I’ve had far too many people in my DMs who are part of these organizations who can attest that these are not true stories. These organizations are focusing on white women’s issues and it’s causing harm. Like I said, I’m just gonna fuckin jump into this. This conversation is about Girl Develop It. I tweeted about them and I also tweeted about Women Who Code. If anyone wants to come on the show to give me some specific examples of Women Who Code, I have my own, but I’m gonna leave that alone. Women Who Code is a problematic organization because I’ve been DMs from people from there as well. But we’re going to focus on Girl Develop It. Shanise, this is going to be about you telling your story. I just really… I’m gonna tell you: you are a godsend. And I haven’t said this before. Because these “leaders” of these organizations are causing such harm. Really marginalized groups, particularly black women, are being shut down, silenced, all these others things. I’m just at a place where I’m just tired of us being harmed and not being able to say anything. Tell us about your relationship with Girl Develop It. It’s your time to tell your story.4:28Shanise Barona: Sure. I worked at Girl Develop It. I held two positions there over the last couple months. Actually, let me backup. I started there as a student. I started at Girl Develop It in 2016 as a student.
