Stephen Miller's got some ideas. So this week, Mary and Andrew start with a focus on his recent acknowledgement that the White House is considering suspending habeas corpus altogether for migrants. They talk about what that means, and the reality that it lacks any legal sniff test, which the Supreme Court agrees with. Then, they highlight what happens when due process works, after the release of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Tufts student who was detained by ICE over an opinion piece she wrote for the student newspaper. Next up, a significant decision from Judge Susan Illston out of California, putting a temporary hold on reducing the federal workforce. Mary and Andrew note what she held, including that the administration needs to follow procedure and get congressional buy in. And lastly, they preview the Supreme Court argument Mary's ICAP team is bringing this Thursday on birthright citizenship- not on the merits per se, but on the issue of national injunctions. And a quick eye pop on Trump's decision to swap out Ed Martin as the US Attorney for DC with yet another Fox News host, Jeanine Pirro.Want to listen to this show without ads? In November I responded to readers' questions about a paper that was being teased to the media suggesting a new definition for “ob*sity.” The paper is now out, and it's even worse than I thought. I've had a lot of requests to write about it and there is a ton of media on it right now (though, sadly, not a ton of any kind of critical/investigative journalism.)As regular readers know, I am in the middle of a four-part series with Dr. Zed Zha about weight and inflammation. I'm pausing that today to give an overview of the issues with this article from the initial analysis that I've completed. After the final two pieces of the inflammation series are published, I'll have a deep dive into the massive conflicts of interest and methodological issues with this paper. In this episode, Jay discusses the merger between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf, which will create a new entity called NuCo or Umbrella Corporation. He explains the assets each entity brings to the table and the potential value of franchising events. Jay also emphasizes the need for guaranteed player participation to increase the value of tournaments and create a stronger identity for each event. He suggests a 50-50 split between ownership and talent, with 25% allocated to the top star players and 25% to the rank and file players. In this conversation, Jay discusses the potential restructuring of professional golf and the need for change in the industry. He explores topics such as revenue split in professional sports, balancing ownership and player compensation, incentivizing growth in professional golf, expanding the team model, alternative sponsorship models, restructuring the golf calendar, and the future of professional golf.TakeawaysThe revenue split between players and owners in professional sports is an important factor in determining player compensation. In professional golf, there is a need to balance ownership and player compensation to ensure fairness and incentivize growth.Expanding the team model in golf can create new opportunities for players and increase interest in the sport.Alternative sponsorship models, such as team sponsorship, can provide more value to sponsors and contribute to the growth of professional golf.Restructuring the golf calendar and moving away from the old professional golf model can drive interest and make the sport more appealing to a global audience.Guaranteeing player participation in key events, such as the global series and majors, can help elevate the status of these tournaments and create a more structured and competitive golf ecosystem.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Purpose of the Podcast03:14 The Merger between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf10:01 NuCo (Umbrella Corporation) and the Assets of Each Entity23:36 The Economics of Golf and the Need for Guaranteed Player Participation30:20 Franchising Valuable Events and Creating Strong Identities44:07 Franchising Events on the European Tour51:36 Ownership and Investment in the New Co56:36 Balancing the Value of Star Players and Rank and File Players57:05 Revenue Split in Professional Sports58:32 Balancing Ownership and Player Compensation59:36 Incentivizing Growth in Professional Golf01:01:03 Expanding the Team Model in Golf01:02:29 Designated Players and Team Sponsorship01:03:29 Alternative Sponsorship Models01:06:06 Restructuring the Golf Calendar01:08:15 Moving Away from the Old Professional Golf Model01:09:47 The Future of Professional Golf01:13:22 Guaranteeing Player ParticipationGolf Lovers United Fanzone!Fan of the show? I am very happy to report I have manged to avoid participating in anything to do with International Women's Day all day long. Because it is a sham isn't it? It's just an opportunity for a whole bunch of corporates, media, Government departments and other organisations to hold some sort of hui or do a little video, write an opinion piece and tick the box for the year that tells the world they're nice to women. Yay, good for you, well done. Tell you what, something I've realised since becoming a mum is that there is one single most helpful thing that would make a lot of women's lives easier. Make early childcare free and more accessible. If you're the Government, fund it like we fund primary and secondary school. If you're a corporate, think about setting up a creche, even if you charge your female employees to use it. If you're a media outlet, start giving this coverage. Because this is the single biggest thing holding women back from doing all the things that we complain about on International Women's Day. Like pay parity and climbing corporate ranks and getting more seats around the boardroom, stuff like that. The reason that women don't get paid as much and don't carry on with their careers is because they have to look after the babies. If day care is too expensive, it'll mostly be mum who stays away from work, that's a fact for most mums. Even when the dads say they're helping, and they are, credit to them, it's not the same. Mums are almost always where the buck stops. Yup, it'll cost money. But the sums might work out that it pays itself back to the Government in taxes that the now working mums pay. Or to the employer in having another productive worker making profits in a labour market where it is really, really hard to find good workers. So cancel the opinion piece, cancel the hui, cancel the speaking panel, forget about the video on Twitter. Women don't need words. Women just need the chance to go back to work. If you haven't yet somehow caught wind of this new discussion of AI vs. Human Art and the many questions and ethical concerns that have been raised, you were probably just going about your own business and ignoring the general noise generated by social media at all times. It's OK, really... You were doing the right thing and protecting your mind, but you're probably curious or you want to hear what my unqualified thoughts are. Either way, I'm here to catch you up on what the heck AI art is and why everyone's been debating if it's good or evil - in my own way and my own words. Here's what made me decide to record this a couple days ago: I downloaded Midjourney in July after someone told me about it. A little later, I realized that many were debating everything about AI art. Was it really art? If so, who was the artist? Was it stealing form human artists? Or was it stealing like and artist? Was there a right and wrong way to use it? And so on. I'm far from an expert, but I'm an artist with a true neutral alignment who has a philosophical side and many opinions; and fittingly I don't have a side on the issue. To stoke the fire, I have made this episode's art with Midjourney again.Click here to go to the Google search that will bring up a lot of the most recent and interesting interesting reads about whether AI art is real art or not. This episode covers a disruption to my current work situation due to a staffing shortage at my husband's organization, and a rant about the Supreme Court's political disruption to women's rights where I am asking for your support. While the personal situation is not the biggest disruption we have endured in the past few years, it did make me angry. I didn't like the policy or the process of my husband having to return to a night shift again, since I thought he had enough seniority to avoid it. Since I want my husband to get more quality sleep, I am on the hunt for the right co-working situation or office outside of home. If you're in the Twin Cities, and there's a space you love, let me know! It reminded me of the big COVID disruption, and I think that's why I reacted the way I did, and railed against reality for a while before getting creative and considering the alternatives. In case you think yoga teachers are always "zen" about situations that come up, this story will show that's not true. In the last few minutes of this episode, I explore the disruption to women's rights that is taking place this year on a national level. While this veers into political territory, and I know I've made an effort to avoid that so far in this podcast, I feel called to speak up on my position here. Please vote pro-choice in the next election. Women and their bodily sovereignty are on the ballot in many states and in local elections. We need you to stand with us to support this fundamental right to privacy and liberty. Philadelphia Inquirer opinion piece picked apart like a chicken bone. Writer blames YOU (his words) for the carnage in Dem-run cities.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Summarizing the comments on William MacAskill's NYT opinion piece on longtermism, published by West on September 21, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. We are a small community, but our ideas have the potential to spread far if communicated effectively. Refining our communication means being well calibrated as to how people outside the EA community react to our worldviews. So when MacAskill's article about longtermism was published last month in the NYT, I was pretty interested to see the comment section. I started to count various reactions, got carried away, and ended up going through 300 or so. Below is a numerical summary. Caveats Selection bias is present. I would guess NYT commenters skew older and liberal. It's possible the comments don't reflect overall sentiment of the article's readers, because people might only feel compelled to comment when they are strongly skeptical, undercounting casually positive readers. Many people signaled they felt positive towards the article and longtermist thinking, but were entirely pessimistic about our future -- basically "This is all well and good, but _". Sometimes it was hard to know whether to tally these as positive or skeptical; I usually went with whichever sentiment was the main focus of the comment. For the most part, this survey doesn't capture ideas people had to help our long term future. Some of those not tallied included better education, fusion power, planting trees, and outlawing social media. Tallies 60 - Skeptical -- either of longtermism, or our future 20 - Our broken culture prevents us from focusing on the long-term 16 - We're completely doomed, there's no point 7 - We are hard-wired as animals to think short term 7 - Predicting the future is hard; made up numbers 5 - We don't know what future generations will want 5 - We don't even value current lives 3 - I value potential people far less than current people 3 - It's easy to do horrific things in the name of longtermism 2 - This is ivory tower BS 42 - Generally positive 17 - This is nothing new (most of these comments were either about climate activism or seven generation sustainability) 7 - This planet is not ours / humans don't deserve to survive 7 - We should lower the population 6 - This is all about environmental sustainability 6 - Animals matter too 5 - Republicans are terrible 4 - Reincarnation might be true 3 - We should ease up on technology 2 - Technology will save us 1 - Time travel might be true 1 - Society using carbon is a good thing 1 - This idea is un-American 1 - This is all the fault of boomers 1 - Stop blaming boomers Takeaways Overall, I found the responses to be more negative than anticipated. The most common sentiment I saw was utter pessimism, which I worry is a self-fulling prophecy. There was very little reaction to or discussion about the risks of bioweapons and AI. Many people seemed to substitute concern for our long-term future solely with concern for the environment. This is understandable given the prominence of environmentalism -- it's already top-of-mind for many. I think people struggled to appreciate the timescale proposed in the article. Many referenced leaving the Earth a better place for their (literal) grandchildren, or for seven generations from now, but not thousands of years. Thanks for listening. If COVID was a battlefield it would still be warm with the bodies of the unvaccinated. Thankfully the mandates are letting up and both sides of the war stumble back to the new normal. The unvaccinated are the heroes of the last two years as they allowed us all to have a control group in the great experiment and highlight the shortcoming of the Covid vaccines. The unvaccinated carry many battle scars and injuries as they are the people we tried to mentally break, yet no one wants to talk about what we did to them and what they forced “The Science“ to unveil. We knew that the waning immunity of the fully vaccinated had the same risk profile as others within society as the minority of the unvaccinated, yet we marked them for special persecution. You see we said they had not “done the right thing for the greater good” by handing their bodies and medical autonomy over to the State. Many of the so-called health experts and political leaders in Australia admitted the goal was to make life almost unliveable for the unvaccinated, which was multiplied many times by the collective mob, with the fight taken into workplaces, friendships, and family gatherings. Today the hard truth is none of it was justified as we took a quick slide from righteousness to absolute cruelty. We might lay the blame on our leaders and health experts for the push but each individual within society must be held accountable for stepping into the well-laid-out trap. We did this despite knowing full well that principled opposition is priceless when it comes to what goes inside our bodies and we let ourselves be tricked into believing that going into another ineffective lockdown would be the fault of the unvaccinated and not the fault of the toxic policy of ineffective vaccines. We took pleasure in scapegoating the unvaccinated because after months of engineered lockdowns by political leaders blinded by power, having someone to blame and to burn at the stake felt good. We believed we had logic, love, and truth on our side so it was easy to wish death upon the unvaccinated. Those of us who ridiculed and mocked the non-compliant did it because we were embarrassed by their courage and principles and didn't think the unvaccinated would make it through unbroken and we turned the holdouts into punching bags. Lambie, Carr, Chant, Andrews, McGowan, Gunner, and the other cast of hundreds in prominent roles need to be held to account for vilifying the unvaccinated in public and fueling angry social media mobs. The mobs, the mask Nazis, and the vaccine disciples have been embarrassed by “betting against” the unvaccinated because mandates only had the power we gave them. It was not compliance that ended domination by Big Pharma Companies, Bill Gates and his many organizations, and the World Economic Forum… It was THANKS to the people we tried to embarrass, ridicule, mock and tear down. We should all try and find some inner gratitude for the unvaccinated as we took the bait by hating them because their perseverance and courage bought us the time to see we were wrong. So if mandates ever return for COVID or any other disease or virus, hopefully, more of us will be awake and see the rising authoritarianism that has no concern for our well-being and is more about power and control. The War on the Unvaccinated was lost and we should all be very thankful for that. Divas, Diamonds, & Dollars - About Women, Lifestyle & Financial Savvy!
This episode introduces a new short format, dubbed the Podcast Shorty! Keeping my Positive Pants on I wanted to share a few brief thoughts about the recent turn of events. This is a solo episode and point of view as my cohost Cecelia Benford is enjoying a well-earned vacation! If you believe the saying that "it is always darkest before the dawn" well we are in good shape as things have (i.e. the Country has) certainly taken a bit of a turn recently, and not necessarily for the better, IMHO. Pull up a chair and lend me your ear for just a few.
Guest: Mark Tomlinson brings the perspective of his news 24 Opinion Piece to Cape Talk and highlights the disturbing reality that we have become deadened to the daily horror stories about child abuse and child murder See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Is critical race theory being taught in American schools? It's January 2022, and Americans are divided. My guest today is Jennifer Ho. The daughter of a refugee father from China and an immigrant mother from Jamaica, whose parents themselves were immigrants from Hong Kong, Professor Ho is the director of the Center for Humanities & the Arts and Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. She teaches courses on Critical Race Theory and Asian American culture. In this episode we define what Critical Race Theory is, how transparent schools should be with parents about the curriculum they teach, whether school board protest meetings are justified, if college campuses and academia have a left-leaning bias, and more. Whether you agree or disagree with today's guest, I invite you to join with an open mind as we work to heal the division on Critical Race Theory concerns in American education.Opinion Piece from Professor Ho:https://coloradotimesrecorder.com/2021/06/dont-be-afraid-critical-race-theory-wont-bite-but-it-may-make-you-think/37640/
